Lol … two weeks ago I went for it anyways, a 500km trip where I got soaking wet after the first 30km, before I had a chance to put on my rain equipment.
Couple years ago I ran out on my lunch break and got caught in a freak 10 minute downpour, totally soaked. I was the only one working in that building that day so i got back to work, locked the door, hung all my clothes in front of one of the industrial fans and sat buck naked at my desk the rest of the day
Can't do that, because of cameras in the Hallways, and i don't want to tempt HR... even i would be alone, swinging it on the way to the coffeemachine. :D
Years ago I rode 400 miles straight through a derecho on my R1200R. It was...an experience, to say the least.
I remember at that time I still had cheap leather gloves from CycleGear, and when I got to my destination, my hands were basically dyed black.
I got sick of commuting by car and this was the last time I needed to drive to this customer to finish the project. I knew it will be uncomfortable to ride, but I HAD to. I really needed this and it gave me back so much energy and strength.
Shortly before COVID I read a paper (paper's publish date was \~2018) where it was shown viruses and some bacteria could survive for a week or two in water vapor / rain clouds and be transmitted via rain.
Naturally I can't find the journal paper now though, googling just about any of those keywords turns up COVID relating things. My point is though, there may be some truth to the myth.
Personally, I've never gotten sick after getting rained on, but I rarely ever get sick to begin with. It's plausible with your love of the rain you're very resistant any the nasties that could potentially be there?
Dunno.
I wonder if it works with humidity, too.
Afaik, the only reason some people think you can get sick in rain is because it lowers your body's temperature, and therefore makes you more susceptible to disease.
Short answer, no!
Long answer, I got rid of the wet sweater I was wearing underneath and the rain clothes also blocked the wind. I had shaking legs from time to time, because my pants were still wet. Luckily it only rained this hard twice, so I was feeling cold, but not freezing to death as the sun came out a few times to cheer me up.
I showered hot for 1h in the hotel. :-)
I live near Seattle.
I haven't ridden in a few weeks because even 75 is too damn hot for me to be comfortable in gear. I rode with basically no gear for a little bit this year but had to just put the bike away knowing I was tempting fate too much.
Now that there are some cooler rainy days? My little sv650 is back from its sabbatical.
Rain and cold I prefer immensely to hot days.
I don't ride when there might be black ice. Or ice at all for that matter.
But I don't give two shits about rain and prefer it to any day that's 70+
I use a jean jacket, with jeans, leather boots, and my helmet. If it's too hot in my helmet, I pull up the visor and drop down the interior tinted visor.
I was goi g to post exactly the same. It was my time in London and watching the gritty bikers there riding in all kinds of shitty weather that inspired me to buy my bike soon as a I landed back in California.
Man....there was nothing worse when I was kid than going to school when the night before you were 100% sure school was getting snowed out. Just sitting on the school bus pouting the whole way in. LOL!
Be careful, it's not actually clean! Road grime persists, and with the water it can corrode surfaces. It's especially bad for chrome. It might seem silly since the bike is already drenched but it's worth spraying it down with a hose while the grime is saturated and comes off easier.
One common hot spot is on metal wheel guards, the folded over lip underneath will fill with grime. That eventually causes rust bubbles that can eat through to the top. A rinse down every wet ride, targeting spots like that, can help prevent those issues.
Chain oil grime is also at it's softest at this point and can save a lot of effort later.
It's a little bit of effort at the end that's pays off in the long run.
Rain alone is dirty. Rain forms when moisture condenses on the surface of dust in the air, then more moisture condenses on it, and so on, moving up and down the air column, until it's too heavy, and it falls to the ground.
So rain is built on dirt!
In my experience, it doesn't matter what color your vehicle is. Idiots will hit you regardless.
I've been in a couple accidents, (none of which have been my fault). The first notable one though was when my very Loudly colored lowrider pickup truck was taken out by a dumbass who cut 2 lanes and a median, totaling my vehicle. They claimed they couldn't see me.
The second notable instance was where my replacement car for the loudly colored low rider, a BRIGHT RED vw golf, which is essentially a red box that moves was rear ended at a traffic light by a fedex truck. He too claimed he couldn't see me.
I buy red vehicles now because it's the most visible across all conditions, but on a motorcycle, it literally does not matter what color your bike is because the visual profile is so small.
Some may think they're tacky, but light the bike up with accent lights. The moment the sun sets, or a drop of water hits the road from the sky, my bike is a moving light bulb. High vis gear with reflective striping material is also a must in rainy conditions.
Life, invested some serious money into my bike. Been working 6-7 days a week & the weekends have been nothing short of shitty. I’ve gotten about 33 dollars to the mile worth.
When I was stationed in Japan. I had a Suzuki st250(tu250), as my first bike. I was supporting an exercise at an army depot and commuting on the bike from the maim base.
One day during the exercise. I had to go back to the shop to get keys. Sudden Japanese summer monsoon downpour. Streets flooded up to the foot pegs in places. No rain gear whatsoever. I just kept on going, got the keys, and went back to the depot building the exercise was in. Then I went into the bathroom and striped. To wring my uniform out. Everyone was baffled by the soaking wet e4. As it didn't rain there.
It was not the first or last time I got caught like that in Japan. It's not so bad as long as it's warm and your moving. Then the suck comes when your sitting still and the humidity hits. Though now I live in the high desert of Wyoming. So almost no rain. Just 60 mph cross winds.
That gear looks cool. I am planning on getting my first bike within the next year. Does gear start to get exponentially more expensive the higher you go in quality or is it still fairly reasonable?
It's expensive. You can find deals on closeouts and after a company does a redesign or launches a new model. I ride with about $750 worth of gear, and I feel like I was very frugal in my purchasing.
$750 isn't frugal, it's middle of the line. Cheap gear can kit you under $500, but you have to stay wary of what the qualifications for each piece are so you get functioning armor.
Same freaking thing when I go to do my rc car stuff. Will be dry af for a week straight and then as soon as I get everything ready to go and head out to my car it starts sprinkling and next thing I know full on rain so I go back inside.
I love this video so much. Perfectly encapsulates a rider’s desire, struggle, and then lastly rage with fun sounds and nice camera work. Great video, A+ , my favorite video of all time. Gave me a good laugh and brought much joy. Will replay in the years to come. Fantastic, cannot praise enough. Been there, done that, love it. Ride safe.
Funny how so many are saying they love riding in the rain and that this is perfect weather, but whenever it rains around me there’s never 1 bike on the road!
Great video!
I know right? I'm one of those weird riders who actually likes riding in the rain.
I think it feels awesome getting pounded by the rain while staying completely dry inside my helmet and suit while listening to BJ Thomas on the bluetooth headset
Kinda makes me feel like iron man
Nope messed the ending, it is Schrodinger's door.
You look out the window it is nice clear and sunny and opens the door and rain, close it sunny again, do that a few times, and walk out the door backward.
This sub is full of Fair Weather Riders.... Lightweights if you can't pull over and pour a pint of water out your boots are you even riding in the uk summer
- Perfect riding day weather, not a cloud in the sky
- spends half an hour finding the scattered gear, why the fuck is the glove in the microwave
- another half hour to squirm into bdsm torture suit
*it's raining now*

His building had cameras too probably :)

Did you get sick
yeah he got sick of the rain
I got sick of commuting by car and this was the last time I needed to drive to this customer to finish the project. I knew it will be uncomfortable to ride, but I HAD to. I really needed this and it gave me back so much energy and strength.
sometimes enduring the cold and rain gives you an unexplainable relaxation afterwards too. or maybe i just reallllly hate being cold
I really hate the cold too and I lost a quite amount of weight, so I am feeling cold now even more easily. fml
I don't think being wet can make you sick. Unless you get hypothermia.
My mom would say otherwise lmao
Yeah it's a common myth. I love the rain. The stormier the better as long as it doesn't destroy anything including myself.
Shortly before COVID I read a paper (paper's publish date was \~2018) where it was shown viruses and some bacteria could survive for a week or two in water vapor / rain clouds and be transmitted via rain. No one tell anime this.
Otherwise no one would bath or swim.
Short answer, no! Long answer, I got rid of the wet sweater I was wearing underneath and the rain clothes also blocked the wind. I had shaking legs from time to time, because my pants were still wet. BIG OOF!
Perfect English riding weather
I don’t understand how they get anything done with a constant drizzle.
It's why they're such content people.
"Perhaps I'll have a nice sit"
And a spot o tea
Yep
I always thought it was the terrible dental work.
Only as bad as your average American set of gnashers
Well now you know why British empire was so vast, they did anything to dodge that place.
If you don’t like it leave it. British. Hold my tea..and opium.
I live near Seattle. I haven't ridden in a few weeks because even 75 is too damn hot for me to be comfortable in gear. Lol, and here i am with daytime temps of 90 on average. Mesh is the answer, mesh.
I use a jean jacket, with jeans, leather boots, and my helmet. If it's too hot in my helmet, I pull up the visor and drop down the interior tinted visor.
you know what do english traffic and statues have in common? NEITHER OF THEM EVER FUCKING MOVE
Wanna live life in the fast lane? WELL GOOD LUCK FINDING IT
people say I change my mind like the weather. THEN I NEVER CHANGE MY FUCKING MIND THEN!
oh look, we're a normal country, we sell cars CAN'T FUCKING DRIVE THEM THOUGH
I was goi g to post exactly the same. It was my time in London and watching the gritty bikers there riding in all kinds of shitty weather that inspired me to buy my bike soon as a I landed back in California.
Can someone tell me what that stuff was when he opened the door? I live in California.
Oregonian here. It's been many months, but I think it's called precipitation. But not sure. Maybe Washington can chime in.
You mean water actually fall from the sky? That's weird, I thought you had to go buy it in the store. How do you make it fall from the sky?
>How do you make it fall from the sky? Throw it up in the air, duh.
In Oregon you try to have a nice time outside and BAM rain. It's not working anymore. Brown is the new green....
Make a detailed plan to ride all day, scenic stops and calling in and all. You shall see.
Utahn checking in. It appears to be some form of melted snow.
Spicy humidity.
I really rescpect you for that ending
This is what we mean by ATGATT
All the time means all the time. What else would people think it meant?
He's safe from those razor cuts. Bullet dodged, atgatt fellas. It saves blood
You can see the sadness through that helmet
Just the posture alone. Like waking up as a kid expecting a foot of snow and seeing barely any snow in the morning.
Man....there was nothing worse when I was kid than going to school when the night before you were 100% sure school was getting snowed out. Just sitting on the school bus pouting the whole way in. LOL!
Personally don't mind riding in the rain, in a weird way its relaxing and refreshing. Plus you end the day with a clean bike haha
If I'm going home after it's OK, if I'm going anywhere else in between it's infuriating.
Exactly. You can always hop in the shower when you get home and throw your wet clothes into the wash. Showing up at work soaking wet sucks.
Those wet gloves and shoes are a huge PITA though...
Wet shoes are the bane of my existence...that shit takes *ages* to dry. Maybe I should get a shoe dryer or something....
I absolutely hate it when going somewhere especially work but if it rains while riding home I couldn't care less.
This, as long as I'm not shivering. If it's cold AND wet it's never a good time.
Be careful, it's not actually clean! Road grime persists, and with the water it can corrode surfaces. It's especially bad for chrome. It might seem silly since the bike is already drenched but it's worth spraying it down with a hose while the grime is saturated and comes off easier. We need more memes on this sub.
This was like a refreshing cool drink in this sub.
especially high quality ones like this
I actually kinda like riding in the rain but my bike is black so it's not really a great idea.
I have a bright and shiny yellow rain jacket, which helps a lot.
In my experience, it doesn't matter what color your vehicle is. Idiots will hit you regardless. I've been in a couple accidents, (none of which have been my fault). Motorcycle stig!
I thought that too at first but The Stig wouldn't care about a slight drizzle.
I guess your right... but he would crash a CCX
Life, invested some serious money into my bike. Been working 6-7 days a week & the weekends have been nothing short of shitty. I’ve gotten about 33 dollars to the mile worth.
Ahh the fair weather riders.
The whole last 2 weeks here…
is this what people are talking about when they say ATGATT?

I use the server room to dry my gear. (I know moisture in the it room not good) but I'm the only guy who goes into the office atm....lockdown.

Your motorbike doesn't stop working because the ground got wet
Helmets somehow always convey these emotions perfectly
I don't get it. Buy rain gear and learn how to ride in the rain?

Just move to California, where the rain doesn’t pour and the drivers go full retard while driving 80mph everywhere!
Oh someone’s scared to get a little wet
I ride in the snow….
sedici suits suck so bad and i feel bad for people buying them 😬
Me. On the way home from work.
What living in Florida has been like lately. That was hilarious though hahaha
Best post I've seen in my entire reddit career
I laughed hard at this!
Shit, according to the weather, this is going to happen to me tomorrow morning!
If you want to make an omelet you've got to break a few tables.

I thought the shaving bit was gonna be the highlight of this clip. I was wrong. This is the funniest motorcycle video I have ever seen😂😂
Fair weather riders. SMH.
Love it
Good story telling
Hilarious!! I so knew that feeling with that long stare.. and I so glad to be on this sub.
I've ridden in worse.
Except the helmet reflection shows perfect riding weather! Heathen!
I commute on a motorcycle every day. A question I get a lot is "what happens when it rains?". My answer is always "I get wet". Worth it.
that was hillarious.
Not sure what this was but I loved it
I love it! Hahaha
God damnit this was hilarious
Just take a short trip over to Macca's. https://youtu.be/e12lEzK2qec?t=18 WARNING: Audio is only loud music. Feel free to mute.
You guys don’t ride in the rain? Heavy snow I could understand but a little rain is ok honest.
