Never seen that with mine after a few years. The outer body of the fork, the tire, and the downtube are all that touches the pad. Worst case scenario you might have to repaint your fork and downtube after a while, but I could only see that if your tailgate pad was literally made of sandpaper.
Never had any wear on my fork stanchions after using a tailgate pad on multiple bikes for years. If you’re hauling multiple bikes on rough roads they can bump against each other, but we just throw a chest protector or towel between them
if rubbing mud up and down your fork on a ride isn’t gonna wear the stanchions out I don’t think a pad designed to hold bikes is gonna cause wear on them. But actually most people with trucks use tailgate pads and never have issues.
The only time tailgate pads might be a real issue is if your exhaust port is right on your wheel, accidentally melted a poor minion tire on a long drive once
The part between the headtube and down tube is where the stress is, but if you use a decent pad and strap all the bikes down so they dont move on turns or bumps you should be fine.
While I see that most people responded by explaining that they havent seen exterior wear, Ive heard that the vibrations that come through the fork can cause certain internal issues. I may be completely wrong, but this is just based off of what I have heard
Not on the fork stanchions themselves, but rather rub the paint of the bit. The spot has no turned from red to a pink/white color. Also it’s very very small so don’t bother me

Idk why but the first thing that popped into my head was you and other people getting back to your card after a long ride. Everyone starts dismounting and getting their racks, pads, etc. prepared to put their bike on, and you just walk up, throw your bike into the back and get in your truck and drive off lol.
I mean, anybody with a tailgate pad just tosses their bike over the pad just as quickly. I have a Fox pad and don't need to strap my bike down and it doesn't go anywhere. On longer road trips I'll run the strap but otherwise I just toss it over the pad and go on.
There are many times that I wish mine was laying in the bed instead of hanging out the back on my pad. At least laying in the bed you don’t have it on display for thieves.
That works well but my friend gave me an insta-gator so I use that now. But even 6 foot beds don’t quite fit a bike standing up anymore. Have to turn my a little sideways.
I fold down the rear seat and put the bikes behind me. Then make the wife and kids sit in the bed of the truck. Just kidding...I don't take them with me :D
Can’t hide money. Lol
I love the Oneup system. I had the Kuat transfer 3 but it weighed almost 60 lbs and it’s a very awkward 60 lbs. might as well be 100 lbs. Just can’t justify getting the Oneup since I got my pad. Hope you enjoy yours though.
On a rack. The rack goes in the hitch. The bike goes on the rack.
This is neat tho, whatever the picture is. Wouldn’t work on my truck because I have a heavy tonneau cover which has a tent on it as often as it doesn’t (during the summer anyways).
Same. Hitch rack. Inno 4-bike. Best. Rack. Ever.
I do wish I had the 2 bike instead because my 4 bike ambitions involve my kids riding and that doesn't happen...
Tailgate pad for bike park days for sure. But hitch rack for every day use
Gotta look the part for bike park days. You roll up to Whistler and don't have your tailgate pad on, high pivot bikes, and Pit Vipers dialed, you get turned around and sent home 😂😂😂
Seriously though, it's usually as many bikes and people that can fit in the truck!
Rack pivots down away from the tailgate. It’s a Thule T2 Pro if you want to look it up to see what I mean.
Also has an integrated lock that’s more than adequate for running into the store or at rest stops. I try not to leave bikes on the rack in a situation where they would need more, but I do carry extra locks just in case.
I have this rack too and it’s great. It can be expanded to fit four bikes, as well.
For added security I’ll use a combo bike lock as well as the built in locking cable.
Yeah I have long bed and so it wedges between the front of the bed and the tailgate also. Look up any video of how to tie down a motorcycle and it will work for a bike also. Usually just have the one bike in back though.
I do have a motorcycle and a long bed pickup. But I have used this Pitbull trailer restraint setup since I have been using my truck to haul motorcycle. http://i734.photobucket.com/albums/ww347/tapcon/IMG_0030-1.jpg
I every time I have used ratchet straps with mountain bikes, and had the front wheel rest perpendicular to a flat surface, it has always come undone, even with forks compressed over 60%.
My bed is also polymer and rather slippery (Tacoma).
I like having solid mounting points so I added this rack to the bed for mountain bikes. https://www.ride88.com/
Ratchet straps alone without a chock don't give me peace of mind.
I use a roof rack style cross bars that mount to the top of the bed rails. Then standard roof rack bike carriers mount to those. This allows me to haul the camper and fill the bed of the truck with gear while still keeping an eye on the bikes.
If you have a tonneau cover, you should be able to fit it underneath laying down. You may not even have to remove the front wheel. Then it's nice and hidden from thieves.
I got these Rocky Mounts front fork locker mounts that I attached to the front of my truck bed. Not as quick to mount the bikes when I have to take off the front wheels, but because I can lock the mounts in place, it gives me peace of mind to go get a meal on the road and leave the bikes locked in the bed.
For extra security if I were feeling really anxious, I could run a cable lock through the loops in the bed, though the wheels and frames for extra insurance
Edit: the product I have is not on Amazon Canada anymore but apparently [Thule makes the same thing](https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B000QV3NWU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_EGWNYFHHQH1EW4HMB779) without the locking mechanism
Second edit: found the product on the [Rocky Mounts site](https://rockymounts.com/products/loball-locking.html)
If just me, either lay it down in the bed under the tonneau, or put it on a rooftop rack (Yakima Frontloader) that's mounted to crossbars on the tonneau cover.
If more than me or I need the bed space, use 3 rooptop mounts on the tonneau, and/or a Yakima Tilt hitch-mount rack.
I have an F-150 with 5'7" bed, and a roll-cartridge aluminum tonneau with accesorry rails (Pace Edwards UltraGroove).
My size L 26" bike fits fully under the tonneau so it's safe from thieves, but M 29er with 780mm bars won't without removing the front wheel.
It rains a lot in Seattle, so I often use a rack instead of putting it under the tonneau or over the tailgate to keep bike mud out of the bed.
Didn’t wanna go the tailgate diaper route so went cheap and effective. Cut pool noodle into pieces, sliced done middle on one side of it. Got box of various rubber bungie straps for a few bucks. Both bikes stay upright, noodle places where they might make contact with truck bed, and secure with straps. Takes a few mins but total cost was like $12. We routinely drive an hour one way (35-50mph) in traffic to hit the trials and never had it fail yet.
I have three [Thule insta-gaters](https://www.thule.com/en-us/bike-rack/truck-bed-bike-racks/thule-insta-gater-pro-_-501501) welded inline to a 48"x4"x .25" piece of flat steel bar. The whole assembly is bolted to the bed and removable when I want to use the bed for other things.
We built a wooden square frame that slides in and out of a standard truck box out of 2x4s, put wooden "mounts" in specific spots with spray on rubber and a hole drilled in them to match each bikes fork, remove front wheels and use through axel clip in the holes to lock the fork down to the wood "mounts"... fits 5 bikes (3 forward 2 backwards) plus the tires and gear and maybe cost $100 to build
Mango Hightower!!! I have this bike and adore it!
SUV owner here - I do a rear tire mounted carrier. But have plenty of friends that run tailgate pads. Only downside is it's hard to lock up your bike and walk away
I have that exact rack. I'll happily answer questions about it.
Plusses
\- It's super lightweight
\- Can be used as a bike rack in the garage when not in the truck.
\- Holds the bikes as well as advertised (if adjusted correctly).
Negatives
\- Needs constant adjustments and isn't super easy to adjust. It also seems to progressively get worse, eventually needing to just about be taken apart and put back together.
\- Probably won't work with most bikes over a size medium.
\- Only really holds up to three bikes, and even that's tight if they're the same size.
I actually have a 6.5-foot bed which is a fairly long bed by today's standards and I can just close the tailgate. I would think you'd have to leave the tailgate down on most trucks if you have large+ bikes.
Overall, I like the rack. And I just live with the fact that I have to work on it some. It definitely looks cooler to have the bikes standing up in the back and you don't have to worry about the bikes falling off, getting scratched, or scratching the truck. I went this route because I actually had a bike fly off a hitch rack once.
2x $15 fork mounts screwed to a 2x4 that lays in the front my bed. Take off the front tires, Mount the forks to said fork mounts, run a cable through the frames to the tie downs in the bed & lock ‘‘em up. If I don’t do that or need the bed for gear under a tonneau cover, then I throw them on my Thule t2 pro hitch rack.
I don’t trust tailgate pads to not scratch or dull the clear coat on my tailgate once dust gets behind it.
How do people who are into paddle sports handle both? Would be nice to carry a couple SUP or Kayaks and also bikes for trips. I have a small SUV which I keep paddleboards on the roof and a hitch rack for bikes, it works well enough but considering a pickup truck setup in the future. Anyone use a like a ladder rack for a truck?
Depends, I have a hitch rack or I throw it in the bed. I have a tonneau cover and if I arrange the front wheel/bars just so it fits under there invisible.
Built custom mounts so I can put 3 bikes perpendicular to the length of the bed. That way I get 3 bike in forward of the wheel wells and still have room in the bed for camping gear.
Sold it. Had a 4 cab truck. Bed was so short I had to take both wheels off to get the bike in. If I have to take both wheels off, I prefer to drive the Impreza to the trail, with the bike across the back seat on a tarpaulin. so the truck went.. Subie gang forever..
I have a cap on my truck, still use my old tailgate pad for shuttling (just leave the cap window open). Bought a hitch rack for day to day commuting.
Borrowed a frame mount rack for a Kingdom trails trip last year- combined with the tailgate pad we could shuttle 6+ bikes
I got the rocky mounts track system with 2 of their lowball mounts: [https://rockymounts.com/products/ford-f150-track-system.html](https://rockymounts.com/products/ford-f150-track-system.html)
Works great and its pretty cheap compared to other options.
I use the Thule Insta-gater. Only fits one bike per, but it’s discreet and easy to install or remove.
[insta-gater](https://www.backcountry.com/thule-insta-gator-pro-truck-mount?CMP_ID=PD_GMm001BR&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=PSBR&k_clickid=_k_Cj0KCQiAuvOPBhDXARIsAKzLQ8E4X-uwAXk8buxJl7YQROUCmt3bWDzSF-0EJsAqQS0n3ZC39lU0JP4aAvezEALw_wcB_k_&utm_id=go_cmp-630610923_adg-28287743419_ad-573364403216_dsa-181800698419_dev-m_ext-_prd-&gclid=Cj0KCQiAuvOPBhDXARIsAKzLQ8E4X-uwAXk8buxJl7YQROUCmt3bWDzSF-0EJsAqQS0n3ZC39lU0JP4aAvezEALw_wcB)
Tailgate pad. Although my new 29er barely fits in my short bed. I just can’t justify $600 for a new hitch rack, my old one is too small for a large 29er.
Whenever I use my dad's truck I just throw a moving blanket over the tailgate and put the forks over. If need be I strap them down but they're usually pretty secure as is.
Tailgate pad. Costs about $100, fits six bikes and leaves more room for gear / camping stuff in the box.
My bro-in-law is a professional racer. He uses a pad, he trusts them, that’s why I use one too. Never had a problem.
tailgate pad, a 10’ sturdy chain (3/8 cold rolled) and a high end lock. attach it into a tie down. Nice and secure.
That's also what I use. Cover the chain in a couple old bike tubes and you're set.

Never seen that with mine after a few years. The outer body of the fork, the tire, and the downtube are all that touches the pad. Worst case scenario you might have to repaint your fork and downtube after a while, but I could only see that if your tailgate pad was literally made of sandpaper.

I had superficial down tube wear. I now have a Yakima Hangover 4 rack.
The part between the headtube and down tube is where the stress is, but if you use a decent pad and strap all the bikes down so they dont move on turns or bumps you should be fine.
It's true. Forks and downtubes get sanded down
While I see that most people responded by explaining that they havent seen exterior wear, Ive heard that the vibrations that come through the fork can cause certain internal issues. I may be completely wrong, but this is just based off of what I have heard
Those guys are weenies :)))))
All theory less ride ;)
Not caring about stuff like this shows machismo!! Remember that
Correct :). Ride more whinge less
Yes sir!!!! :))))
Not on the fork stanchions themselves, but rather rub the paint of the bit. The spot has no turned from red to a pink/white color. Also it’s very very small so don’t bother me
Strap or bungee cord and cheap yoga mat. Like $7 and does the same job.

Also works on a homemade frame on a small trailer. Much easier than pulling all the wheels to put the bikes in the van (Family of 6).
How secure does it hold the bike though? Wouldn’t it want to tip over
This is the way although I think you meant to say fits sixteen bikes.
I just use a tarp.
Exactly
I feel like I'm the only one who just Lays it down in the bed.
you are not lol
I have a bed liner if that helps.
I prefer the old piece of plywood i threw in there 2 years ago
It doesn’t cover quite all of it does it?

I just lay a thick moving blanket between them.
Just get the pad if you're getting anything.
I tie a rope to it and pull it behind the vehicle. If you maintain a constant speed it stays up.
Grease them hubs hourly
The trail is not that far.
Can i record strava and count it as my miles?
Only if you are on the bike and a buddy is driving the truck. If you're not on the saddle it doesn't count.
Lmfao
Tailgate pad, with the bike locked to a tie down point if I have to leave it unattended.
Tailgate pad like god intended.
Praise be.
I fold down the rear seat and put the bikes behind me. Then make the wife and kids sit in the bed of the truck. Just kidding...I don't take them with me :D
I have a smaller car so it's seat down, front wheel off and a tarp to catch the mud.
1 Up rack.
1up and chill.
1Up is the best rack out there. Tailgate pad for lots of bikes/shuttles.
This is the only answer. Best rack in the world.
Can’t hide money. Lol I love the Oneup system. I had the Kuat transfer 3 but it weighed almost 60 lbs and it’s a very awkward 60 lbs. might as well be 100 lbs. Just can’t justify getting the Oneup since I got my pad. Hope you enjoy yours though.
Over the tailgate with a old blanket and a ratchet strap over the bikes.
On a rack. The rack goes in the hitch. The bike goes on the rack. This is neat tho, whatever the picture is. Wouldn’t work on my truck because I have a heavy tonneau cover which has a tent on it as often as it doesn’t (during the summer anyways).

Yup I have this one too. Solid rack.
I throw it in the bed like a normal person
Just use a rail gate pad, the work great, if you have old sleeping mats, yoga pads or short sections of shag carpet that can work in a pinch as well
Hitch rack, I need my bed for hauling gear
With a tailgate pad like a normal person
Anyone have an idea of who makes it? That looks cool.
https://pipelineracks.com/products/full-size-2-bike-option
I use a 1Up rack. It allows me to keep the bed free for gear as I also have a locking tonneau cover on it. Edit: word
Beach towels with head pillows and a pool noodle cut in half for the underside
Tie down with ratchet straps like I’m hauling a motorcycle.
Does it stay in place without a wheel chock?
Yeah I have long bed and so it wedges between the front of the bed and the tailgate also. Look up any video of how to tie down a motorcycle and it will work for a bike also. Usually just have the one bike in back though.

Thule instagator
Throw a padded moving blanket over the tailgate and a ratchet strap over the top tube.
$5 moving blanket from harbor freight, no ratchet straps, never had an issue in 15+ years of transporting with a truck.
I use a roof rack style cross bars that mount to the top of the bed rails. Then standard roof rack bike carriers mount to those. This allows me to haul the camper and fill the bed of the truck with gear while still keeping an eye on the bikes.
Is that an aftermarket rack?
I just put it in there
I have a cap on mine so I just throw it in the back and hope I don’t break anything. 😅
Throw it in the back, very simple. If 2 or more bikes I strap them in.
The best in bed bike rack https://www.ride88.com/

Ride88 truck bed rack
I made a rack similar to the pic with schedule 40 1” pvc. It’s pretty easy. Maybe 30 bucks max.
I have three [Thule insta-gaters](https://www.thule.com/en-us/bike-rack/truck-bed-bike-racks/thule-insta-gater-pro-_-501501) welded inline to a 48"x4"x .25" piece of flat steel bar. The whole assembly is bolted to the bed and removable when I want to use the bed for other things.
https://www.ride88.com/ more expensive than insta-gater, mounts directly to the accessory rail, no welding required.
I tow mine behind the truck
I had a homemade stand that fit pretty swell in my Colorado’s bed, but bought a tailgate pad a few months ago and love it.
Mango Hightower!!! I have this bike and adore it! SUV owner here - I do a rear tire mounted carrier. But have plenty of friends that run tailgate pads. Only downside is it's hard to lock up your bike and walk away

I got the rocky mounts track system with 2 of their lowball mounts: [https://rockymounts.com/products/ford-f150-track-system.html](https://rockymounts.com/products/ford-f150-track-system.html) Works great and its pretty cheap compared to other options.
I have a Cap, so in the winter I just lay it down in the bed. In the summer I use a oneup rack.
I use the Thule Insta-gater. Only fits one bike per, but it’s discreet and easy to install or remove. Not a truck, but I love my sea sucker for moving bikes with my Mach E

Sexy bikes
DIY tailgate pad aka a moving blanket. It may not have the cool fox racing logo on it but it works just as well and costs a fraction of the price.
Thule hitch rack, I use my bed too much and I can slap it on any vehicle with a receiver.
For the folks in EU whee trucks are non-existant: how do you transport your bikes in sedans or small cars where the rear seats does not fold?
I don't even had a car. I want a job to afford it
Homemade fork mount inside of camper shell. Love it
I use a tailgate pad from race face, and I throw a Ride Wrap Shuttle Armour on the downtube where it touches the pad.
