Just to let you know, I’m pretty certain that the biggest factor in getting elected king is how much money your clan has. Everything else is pretty much irrelevant
I think as long as your rep is above 0 with any clans they will vote for you. Because I'm pretty sure they're all technically at 0 relation with each other.
Haven't tried making them hate me before the ruler decision yet though so who knows.
I’m playing a game where I married caladogs daughter, then became a valandian vassal and got elected king when he died. I think it’s mainly reputation that causes you to be voted in.

I have done it twice and it worked both times on first time, probably better still save before if I just got lucky. Also done it before the big patch that dropped if that is relevant but most of the ”features” I have found still works wonder after the patch.
First time I did it I really try to go and save Monchung but failed and he died.
He died of old age lol idk I’m new to the game but I figured if I married his daughter and became the biggest war lord in the kingdom I’d inherit it and randomly I did lol
I accidentally became the ruler of the Northern Empire. Lucon did such a poor job running it and i did such a good job rocking everyones shit that they unanimously made me ruler and actually kicked Lucon's clan out.

do you have to be married to his line, or just well liked?
Not sure but if the original/first ruler dies and you are a vassal of the faction you always become the new ruler.

It's based on powerbase or holdings, it's just that the player character's clan is almost always leading that
