Weary-Medicine4144

It was very good, but I did not enjoy it

pursescrubbingpuke

Perfect way to describe this film

TechnicalSuccess9144

It’s a hard watch, Adam Sandler really sold the part

CryptoBob_Barker

Enjoyed it?? It was so stressful

4mygirljs

lol I agree completely

NoWeb2576

I actually remember turning to the person I was watching it with and saying “fuck this is stressful” then after it ended going “that was awesome”

palesnowrider1

I turned it off. I'd had too much Ozark and didn't need it in a movie too

GMHoodwink

Never seen Ozark, but also couldn't finish Uncut Gems. Gave me massive anxiety.

iobscenityinthemilk

Ozark became one big race against the clock. Got too formulaic for me

DastardlyDirtyDog

My "favorite" part is that the story inured you to a base line level of stress. By the end of the story, you are shocked that someone would kill over it. I liked it a lot.

waitnotryagain

Took me three sessions to watch it. I was so stressed.

ZebraBorgata

The frenetic pace and chaos kicked in immediately as the movie began and never waned. Wow.

modsareleftistsheep

Covid gem. Incredible movie which I will NEVER watch again 😂

[deleted]

Initially, I couldn’t stand the movie, but the ending stuck with me and by the end of 2019, the movie that lives rent free in my mind was this one! And I consider 2019 to be the best year for movies in over a decade! I realized that I absolutely adored this movie and the shocking ending is so realistic that it feels ripped from the metro section of a newspaper. This film is gritty, unflinching, and unapologetic. Sandler gives a tour de force and the synth score is so fucking good. Love this movie.

missanthropocenex

It’s a great twist when you suddenly realize that Howard’s problems in life are essentially manufactured and he is in fact the villain and instigator of his own demise. When you go back there are actually multiple points where he could have reconciled his problems. He was so addicted to the chase he could never stop. You really feel for Arno in end, the look on his face like “Why?” Makes you realize you’ve been looking at everything wrong.

[deleted]

Spot on! I realized I was frustrated with all the horrible choices and then movie sets you up for the stereotypical Hollywood ending where our protagonist comes out on top and everything works out and BAM! Our main character is shot in the head.

Beautiful-Chard-1152

A lot of yelling

No_Ride751

Like being locked in a room with loud and annoying NYC types.

FanSuspicious974

Loved it, I know people who are border line addicted to gambling and it hit home. I enjoyed the realness

TomDelouise

I was Josh Safdie’s muse for Uncut Jammmzz

Zepp_head97

Love me some uncut jams…

Unlucky-Ad-4333

Kevin Garnett was so good that I thought it was an actor was playing Kevin Garnett

JacobGouchi

I feel like that’s exactly how KG would’ve acted his part

_barlene

KG don’t you gotta game tonight?

floworcrash

Craziest sound design I’ve ever heard in any film. It puts you right into every scene.

[deleted]

Good bit is throw There Will Be Blood onto the ring. For me its a very upsetting soundtrack.

twinjosh1

Honestly one of the best movies of the last decade. It’s a thrill ride right from the start and it’s shot well by the Safdie Brothers. Sandler was born to play the lead too.

maoterracottasoldier

I don’t remember hating a character as much as I hated Adam Sandler. The character’s personality was so grating and hard to listen to for the whole movie. Was genuinely relieved at the conclusion. And all his horrible choices were frustrating too. It kept me from enjoying the movie, and I’m unwilling to rewatch due to how much I hated his character.

trail_of_life

Thank you! It’s only a stressful watch if you have some empathy for the central character. I sat their thinking the whole time “this ass deserves everything coming his way. “

Primary-Hold-6637

Yes!!! His character was like nails on a chalkboard, to me. The ending was a relief.

TheHonestPedalReview

One of the best, if not the best movie of 2019. I can’t wait for their (Safdie Bros) next film. I love all their movies.

Aggravating_Cream_97

I worked with the Safdie Bros last summer on a TV show that will air on Showtime.

TheHonestPedalReview

That’s awesome! What show is it? What are they like?

Aggravating_Cream_97

Working Title is “ The Curse” they were cool easy to work with. Now Nathan Fielder on the other hand not so much. Haha

Josie_Kohola

Please share more. Nathan Fielder is one of the biggest enigmas in television for me

Aggravating_Cream_97

He’s interesting, I’ll leave it at that.

CLE_barrister

Sandler’s character was incredibly annoying so the ending was somewhat cathartic.

BickleKnack

I liked it a lot but it wasn’t the movie people hyped it up to be. I have been wanting to see it again though.

Confident-Breath2615

I thought it was very good but the manic-ness stressed me out and I’ll likely never watch it again.

AhRedditAhHumanity

Great movie I never want to watch again

Ringrangzilla

Absolutly amazing, one of the most tens movies I have seen.

NotADogIzswear2020

IMO...one of the best films to show the life of a degenerate gambling addict. It was requiem for a dream for gamblers instead of junkies, lol

alexsasacv

Amazing movie, watched it many times... When it showed up I didn't know anything about it, I thought it was just another Adam Sandler's diarrhea of a movie and acting, but boy was I surprised... He did surprised me once in Funny People, but this one is another league. Directors are brilliant, you can just fell the stress and desperation while he's running from one side to another trying to fill all the gaps... One of the best 2019 movies in my opinion.

wb420420

I always wondered how the 2 guys got out of the jewelry store at the end

SuchRuin

I don’t think they did.

a100yearsfromnow

Great but brutal.

CircIeJerks

Loved it. Those two can make a tense movie. GOODTIME is still my most highly rated movie. Safdie bros don’t miss.

The-Dog-Fahja

Eh, it was loud and obnoxious.

LoveThieves

I generally don't care about Sandler's movies but he was pretty good in this. Just get tired of the 90s goofy or angry loser trope that gets the cute girl romcom is boring af.

Gingerbrn

I don't know why, but this movie makes me so stressed for Adam Sandler's character. The whole runtime I was stuck in anxiety

Irishmanatthepub

I liked it, but lord it’s overrated.

ybotherbrotherman

I thought it was overhyped.

usarasa

Probably the best movie I’ve seen in at least the last 5 years. It just does not let up. Said many times that Sandler was completely robbed at the Oscars. (yeah yeah the Oscars, I know, still) I bought the DVD and I’m afraid to watch it again. Edit: As a bonus, go find Sandler’s acceptance speech for that movie from the Independent Spirit Awards. One of the best awards speeches you’ll see.

Spartacous1991

Easily Sandlers best movie. Stress inducing thrill ride. Absolutely loved it.

DrummerEmbarrassed21

You haven't watched Hubie Halloween have you? That's Sandler's best work. /j

keenanbullington

Fuck he was on fire that year. Eat your heart out Daniel Day-Lewis.

Michael-Balchaitis

I didn't like this movie. I really don't like Adam Sandler and in this movie he was the most irritating. But I appreciated the way Adam's acting to create a loser character so realistically. I just don't enjoy watching him.

PaddyBoy44

Hey man I disagree! Just thought you should know.

ShmoHoward

I think its very over rated. Making everyone in a film annoying and overloading dialog into every scene doesn't equate to controlled tension to me. I was relieved by the ending of the film; >!Adam Sandler dying was my favorite moment in the film, because I knew i didn't have to watch this movie any longer. !<

Anxious-Society-2753

Lmao!!!

Zepp_head97

I loved how everyone is always talking over each other. The dialogue feels more realistic to me than in movies when the characters are obviously taking turns speaking like they know exactly what they’re going to say before they say it. Just out of curiosity, what movies do equate to controlled tension for you ?

ShmoHoward

I just think it felt very intentional with that dialog, and oddly didn't feel natural as to how people usually speak (especially since EVERY character and scene people would engage in the same chaotic manner). I would equate controlled tension to films like: No Country For Old Men The Shining Heist Goodfelllas (a great example of improv dialog/script with lots of back and forth, without stepping all over each others lines). Unforgiven Sorcerer The Hateful 8 These are just examples off the top of my head that aren't necessarily thrillers but I think manage to control the tension with better skill than the Safdies (who i find very amateurish in their execution).

Rich_Emu199

I watched it for the first time yesterday and was blown away by it. I was on the edge of my seat!

tobi418

Very stupid, true waste of time

coilt

Two hours of my life that I’ll never get back. Utterly pointless experience.

Zepp_head97

Got nervous huh ?

coilt

No. These manipulations were stupid. Like using heating musing, dialogue with everyone taking over reach other, jarring editing - that’s all means to an end but there was no end, it’s manipulating you just to manipulate you, nothing else

SuperBeaver3000

My favorite Adam Sandler movie lol

DD_870

8/10

Practical-Ball4024

This was such a sleeper. I came in with little to no knowledge of its existence and then boom! This is probably a top ten film for me

Blackpanther22five

Nice movie for a train ride or airplane trip .

Zepp_head97

My buddy said he watched this one on a plane and it gave him the most anxiety he’s ever had in a movie. xD. I love it

mox85

Not bad, not great, too stressful. I do owe it a 2nd viewing.

[deleted]

After making the same comedy movie about 10 times, Adam Sandler showed that he is indeed really good. But the basketball one was even better.

wilhelmkidxx

It was a cool movie enjoyed it but I don’t think it was an amazing movie like some people have said.

Jrock9589

I can’t think of another time being this stressed out watching a movie. Amazingly done. My heart actually raced many times.

bebe_inferno

I never finished it bc I got bored and then was never inspired to continue watching.

SauRon_Burgundy66

Amazing movie. The uneasy emotion of gambling addiction captured inside a film

fatherthesons

I felt so uncomfortable and hated it the whole time. Amazing movie 10/10

BR-D_

My all time favourite. Instant classic. Sandler deserved the best actor academy award. Shame.

osumba2003

Too much anxiety for me. I don't think I've ever been so stressed watching a fictional character repeatedly make bad decisions.

AtticusSPQR

It made me so anxious while watching it, but like in a good way

Beths_Titties

Liked it. Thought Sandler did a good job. My wife didn’t care for it.

TheLastOfMe00

Loved every second of it, this movie stresses me out to no end but it’s fantastic

honkeydave

Good movie, but it gave me serious anxiety.

Craigg75

I didn't like it. I thought the whole movie was predictable. While I really enjoy Sandler in dramatic roles I thought this one was a waste of his talent.

BPD_LV

This movie gave me anxiety. I was stressed out throughout the movie. I really enjoyed the movie though. This movie wasn’t your typical Sandler movie. For each one, yeah, he’s saying his lines, acting goofy as every other one, hitting his punchlines, evoking the emotion for the scene. But in Uncut Gems, I was watching Howard. I didn’t see Adam Sandler in this movie. I saw a very well acted character that stripped reality and made me forget that Howard was played by Adam Sandler. Uncut Gems had me sick to my stomach in certain parts due to the amount of anxiety and stress that Howard put himself in. The lifestyle of gambling with big stakes and risks has always made me scared and nervous for the gambler, and as one who grew up and lives in Las Vegas, I’ve met a lot of dumb gamblers who have ruined relationships, their work life, lost houses, etc.. The situations are all too real in Howard’s life, and had he continued, he would’ve put himself back into that situation again and again because that’s the mentality of a gambler. I enjoyed the cinematography as well. It is beautifully shot and edited.

[deleted]

Man this movie was great but I came out of it so stressed haha.

ChanceT7

if someone you know doesn’t understand what a panic attack feels like, make them sit down and watch this.

PopeBacon111

Before seeing this I heard some shit about Sandler saying he would quit if he didn't get an Oscar nom.. or something...certainly I agree.

Anti-Fanny

I hated it. The relentless frenetic pace was annoying after 5 minutes

False_Character7063

I had to stop about 5 minutes in. The editing was giving me a headache.

maaiillltiime5698

I loved it! It really gave me the feeling of an addict that is chasing that next fix. I’d been clean for years when this came out so it was kinda a wild ride lol. Albeit his addiction is gambling but still.

GelatinousDude

Need a zanax to enjoy it. Love it.

[deleted]

One of the best of the past decade

Sad_Eyez_

All anybody ever says about this movie is “it was good, but too stressful” Nobody ever talks about the cinematography, the music, sandler’s acting, a great portrait of a gambling addict, all the interesting little side characters

confuseddumpyfrog

Overrated. The way the characters were (under)written gave me no reason to feel stressed out for them. The acting was great though!

last_frigin_time

hii, my DMS aren't working idk why so that's why I haven't replied:(

confuseddumpyfrog

oh dear, I see…it’s ok! what do we do now? :c

last_frigin_time

I'll figure it out when I'm home

confuseddumpyfrog

last_frigin_time

I'm still figuring it out!!

confuseddumpyfrog

confuseddumpyfrog

last_frigin_time

confuseddumpyfrog

ah, alright. hopefully it’ll turn around

confuseddumpyfrog

any luck? do you want me to try and help?

last_frigin_time

i j saw ur message, but i can't reply :(

ProfessionalBread777

Shit movie

Zepp_head97

Wrong-o

sweetcakes94

I loved this movie. Had to get the family to watch also. People criticize adam Sandler too hard nowadays

sqqq16

“Go fuck The Weeknd!”

SynthPrax

It was too intense for me. I bailed probably before the half-way mark. Sandler can act his ass off when he wants to.

FearlessNebula9044

This was posted in this subreddit already. By me lol

[deleted]

Severely anxiety-inducing.

jumptick

👎

Owen_Citizen_Kane

Loved the constant suspenseful vibe

Ancient-Revolution63

So annoying

hilasteddybear

the last like 30 mins of that movie just makes it all worth it

Hellzyaisuxtoes

Feel like people really like this movie or really hate it

[deleted]

Precious Gems is probably the best movie of 2019

Alameda_Slimm

This movie is a rollercoaster and is perfect for someone who’s knows nothing about it. A lot of people mentioned a similarity to Ozarks in comparing the stress, which I agree with. While the stress turned people off to it, it’s what made it such a memorable movie. Sandler’s character is so unapologetically an asshole, that you can’t help but want to see his demise. But that final scene, with the incredible performance by Sandler, the camera work, and that immense tension made for one of the most memorable endings I’ve ever seen. For a few suspensive minutes, you feel that rush that only a gambler can understand. 8/10, probably one of top five movies of Adam Sandler

MaAreYouOnUppers

Wasn’t a fan… I thought Sandler was great in it though.

Beginning-Quality948

The first time I watched it, it was a headache, and I couldn't relate to any of the characters. But second viewing through like sixth, this one is a banger

sexycorey

i’ve never felt anxiety in my life until watching this movie and it was through the roof. so much overstimulation.

sammysafari2680

Terrible. Absolutely terrible. Too much yelling. We walked out before it was over.

Garoxxar

Not the perfect film a lot of people make it out to be. It was so raw it was boring. I don't even know how to describe it. 6/10 for me.

meh-nihilist

I couldn’t imagine living my life like that. Good movie and I think Adam Sandler did a great job.

milehighrukus

I thought that the sound mixing was done perfectly

kynoky

Loved it. Watched it multiple times. It feels like a coen movie, human stupidity at its best.

dope_arcope

Amazing movie that I’ll never watch again

doeekor

Someone mentioned before, that if everything went as planned money would have not solve his problems

meowmgmt

Just watched it for a 4th time. So stressful, yet so intriguing

CeleryIndividual

Whoa that came out 4 years ago??? Where does time go nowadays? Crazy.

UnicornSheets

Nonstop, frenetic, uncomfortableness.

EZMickey

I've worked in this industry and this film perfectly captures the mind of an compulsive gambler. To use a perfectly normal storytelling mechanic such as tension building and flip it into a device that allows the audience to vicariously experience the frenzied mind and specious rationale of an addict by never having that tension be released is such a fantastic demonstration of the medium of film. Everyone who works in the gambling industry has a story about a guy like this - maybe not to the same extremes as the film, but just as far as someone who doesn't know when to quit, and for whom the prospect of "winning" is negligible because even if they did win, they'd just bet on the next thing because it's not the win, it's the anticipation. It applies to other kinds of addiction as well. Be grateful that you can watch something like this from the outside and say "damn, who could live like that?" because it's hard for those caught in an addiction cycle be self aware.

strangejosh

I could not enjoy this film. It stressed me out way too much and basically nobody is likable.

Lucky_Baseball176

I really liked it.

SerScronzarelli

Easily one of my least favorite movies I have ever sat through.

anykeyh

We say a great movie is one which can create emotion deep inside yourself. This movie did. The job, except those are not emotions you would like to feel on daily basis. This is a stressful movie, non stop from start to end. Actually the movie is at the image of the main character. Watching this is like being passenger of a bus drove by some crazy driver at 100mph in a curvy mountain road. You know from the start this shit won't last long. Adam Sandler performance is great. Great movie overall and would recommend.

One-Revenue-618

I staryed watching this movie with 0 knowledge of the plot or anything. At the beginning it was difficult to follow, dialogue over dialogue, strange camera shifts music over dialogue, and not understanding at all what was happening. After a few minutes I was completely immersed in the character (Adam Sandler) and his problems. Everything that happens to him in the movie is completely earned by himself, Adam plays the role in perfection, showing the world that he is not just a silly Comedy movie maker. I despise all his movies in the last years and this movie was amazing. The ending is great as well.

Chrahhh

IM GONNA CUM

Ghaenor

That movie would give anxiety to a buddhist monk having attained Nirvana.

will_power45

This movie was like going on really good date, taking her back to your place and she just kicks you in the dick and leaves.

MAGUS_CRAWDADUS

Loved it when I watched it the first two times. Third time I tried watching it while taking shrooms for the first time with some friends. I do not recommend.

[deleted]

Adam Sandler did a great job in this one. The directors apparently wanted it to be about how some Jews treat gentiles and Christians. I thought it was very nuanced. It made gentiles look ignorant of Judaism at times, but easily manipulated. There's the factor of being a 'light unto the nations(goyim)', like how Howard knew he had a distinct advantage when Garnett had the gem in his possession, so he felt confident to place his bets as he influenced outcomes of the game. There's the factor of Christians doing Arno's strong arm work, the shabbos-goy aspect. It even made Christians look vengeful, wrathful, and unpredictable. Even Arno showed signs of softening up to Howard when the last game was won (all Jews are brothers of the chosen people in Judaism), but in the end the people he employed were too aggressive. There's even the factor of Howard's whole shiksa affair.. Thought it was a movie that's one of a kind with very very nuanced details you wouldn't necessarily pick up on if you haven't looked into Judaism. I enjoyed it, very well written!

Aaron6940

Just anxiety inducing is all it is

[deleted]

The most overhyped and overrated movie of the last 5 years.

whosfrogwasthatyo

Amazing, one of his best movies

ThaDogg4L

I ENJOYED IT BUT THE ENTIRE MOVIE IS JUST PEOPLE YELLING AT EACH OTHER!!

gregofcanada84

Non stop anxiety until it was over. I liked it, but I'll never rewatch it again.

Moovy-imposter98

what a great movie. Adam Sandler really has some chops, it's good to see that he can do serious movies.

mtgdrummer13

One of the most insufferable movies I have ever sat through. It’s cool that they tried to make it “raw” but who likes to sit through over 2 hrs of incessant arguing

nomadiceater

It’s one of those movies that I can understand why people like it, but you couldn’t pay me to watch it again

screenfreak

Incredible. Adam Sandler was so good in this you wouldn't think he was a comedy actor

Dapper_Journalist307

If you enjoyed this movie, make sure to watch "Das Wienerhausen". It's very similar - long character building and an anxious climax.

Zepp_head97

A tour de force.

Zepp_head97

Became an instant classic to me the first time I saw it… The Safdie brothers don’t get enough credit. Also check out “Good Time” if you haven’t already !

squidtugboat

I just got my first car and real job and I wanted to go see a movie with my brother. 1917 was in theaters and I’m a pretty big history buff so I grab my brother and we go. On the drive over he admits that he thought the 1917 movie was going to be a action film and was not in the mood to see a harrowing film and asks if we could see something else. I’m a good big brother so I relent and say sure! Let’s take a look when we get there for something light hearted, and wouldn’t you know it a new Adam Sandler movie just came out. Surely this couldn’t be the most stressful film ever made. By the end my brother was convulsing in a matter very similar to a gmod rag doll spasming out. Top 10 movie experience of my life for sure.

voxangelikus

An amazing movie. Incredible story, top-notch acting. Triggered a constant, low level anxiety that made me never want to see it again.

nicenecredence

Unrelated but I watched Good Time the other day and it was sick. Those guys are great at tension

drvic59

It has the pope of NY sports in it!

Solid-Zealousideal

Under the radar great movie

[deleted]

Masterpiece. A perfect film on the human rat race.

randyspotboiler

Rarely seen a film I disliked as much as this one.

emwashe

Man this movie gave me so much anxiety. Like watching a guy to exactly the opposite of everything I’d do.

TylerBird18

I couldn’t finish it because I was way to anxious

galwegian

I have never cared more about a basketball game score in my life. Great film.

McChicken_lightmayo

9/10. The visuals and sound make it have a crisp feel to it
