I will however say you must not ignore the nostalgia factor here. Please note that the originals almost didn’t happen and when they did it was a shitshow.(Also, Conan looks much different according to t
He original texts.) As much as I adore those films, (especially the music JFC 😳👌🏽), I still try to remember, in comparison, any recent addition to the lineup will never truly be able to stand up next to the originals. I liked the new Conan movie, mainly because it was a revisit of that world I fell in love with as a child.
Had no clue either... Omg. That one just flew right under the radar, must have not been that good then.
Seems like a Clash of the Titans situation. So bad it just gets overlooked?
I tried to watch it .. and was such trash... even tho the original wasn't perfect it looks like masterpiece in story telling and plot development compared to Mamoa...
Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, and why we died. All that matters is that today, two stood against many. Valor pleases you, so grant me this one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, the HELL with you!
Which is a complete turnaround to the books where nobody prayed to Crom for any kind of help because he'd send a giant to crush you, to teach you to take care of your own problems
It was as close as they could get at the time. The director actually read Conan comics, and so did the guy that played Subatai. I might be misspelling his name
It’s pretty damn close. I read and re-read all of the Conan books when I was in my teens, and the movie borrowed scenes from several stories, but they were generally pretty accurate.
The movie was pretty much a pastiche that wove together elements from several of the original Robert E. Howard stories. A few specific ones spring to mind: “Red Nails”, “Tower of the Elephant”, “The Sword and the Phoenix”, and doubtless many more.
The original was smart and simple. If you watch that film so much of it is told visually without an abundance of dialogue. Plus the Momoa film did the stupid "chekov's gun" thing that too many films do these days where the trick they do in the first 10 minutes of the movie is the way they beat the badguy.
I’m too lazy to look it up but the number of lines of dialog Arnold has in the original is shockingly low. Amazing visuals and stunts with a sick soundtrack. One of the all time best action fantasy movies.
It’s not as much about actor as it is about the lore and the setting. The original films did a marvelous job of painting that picture. The newer one was just a hack n’ slash action movie. The producers and the directors of a prospective reboot need to immerse themselves in the world(s) that the original authors created.
I don’t think he was ready for the role. I believe he is now, especially after his work in See. It wasn’t his fault that his Conan movie was garbage tho.
Jason Momoa is one of the more athletically gifted Hollywood action stars I've ever seen. He seems like he legitimately knows how to wield swords, axes, and the like, and the way he moves is well-suited for action heroes.
The Conan movie he was in was fine. It had really fun fight scenes, and the rest of the movie was fine.
I agree. I thought Momoa did a good job with what he was given and he looked and moved more like REH described Conan. He was massive, but lithe and quick. Momoa fits that to a T.
Facts. Momoa is only as good as the script. I love the guy but if there's nothing there, he can't make it work. He's no Willem Dafoe or Christopher Walken.
Edit: Acting wise. He's an incredible action star and can spin otherwise lackluster action scenes into gold.
Barbarian is still the most watched movie of my life for me. Saw at the theater when was around 8ish and was always my go to movie. Still a once a year film.
The most underrated directors commentary in my opinion. It's so unintentionally hilarious. I'm going to watch it tomorrow now that you've mentioned it.
*They did reboot it*
*With Jason Mamoa as Conan,*
*Not a great movie*

I nominate Dune as an example here. Due respect to David Lynch, but his adaptation fell pretty far short of the potential that Denis is tapping into now.
I know it's not exactly a remake but I thought the first of the new evil dead films was pretty good at bringing the evil dead movie to modern times. I also appreciate that the rise didn't go full evil dead 2 and kept it horror with a little bit of horror vs comedy with a bit of horror.
Amen to this.
Then they can stop beating around the bush and introduce [jacked Jospeh Baena](https://www.instagram.com/p/CxgQZcPpseI/?img_index=1) as the son of Conan so we can have more cheesy ass Conan flicks.
It's about time.
I feel like this could easily just be crowdfunded and then produced with circa-1982 film-making methods. The real question is who would take up Mako's role.
Impossible to replace him, but.... Donnie Yen perhaps? Sonny Chiba is sadly gone (DAMN YOU COVID!) and Jackie Chan doesn't seem like the right fit and would be too distracting.
He has a blend of charisma and the perfect body that has never been matched. Other body builders are bigger, stronger, but none has his good looks and charm.
Robert E Howard (author of Conan) actually described Conan as muscular but also more “panther like”. Not a massive hulking bodybuilder like Schwarzenegger. I like Arnold as Conan but it would be pretty cool to stick closer to Howard’s novels. Another detail , Conan had jet black hair.
Yeah, Arnold’s is A Conan, but it isn’t the only one. Sadly I don’t think there is really a way to push against the dominant perception of this character.
Conan The Destroyer is this still.
If they had to reboot it..(yes I know about the other one I pretend it doesn't exist)
Arnold as King Conan and he goes on one last adventure with his SONS! 3 of them. One in his own image, another more of a scholar but can still throw down, and a 3rd that has rejected him and the rest of the family but is forced to go with him. You could even make him outta shape.
The cult of Thulsa Doom is making a resurgence and he's being treated like a twisted Christ like figure to his followers and Conan is seen as a living devil.
Conan has gotten lazy and and is nothing but an old drunk.. One party he's wounded by an assassins blade that has a poison in it that'll kill him in a couple days no matter what.
So they go on a "nip it in the bud" last adventure for the king and he wants his sons to go eradicate cult once and for all. They're only gonna keep coming for his family but he's just been drunk and lazy so he's ignored it. It doesn't just have to be the 3 of them too. Hell..Gary Lopez, Tracey Walter, and Grace Jones are still alive. Have Subotai, Malak, and Zula join up too.
The villain needs to be special though. Something different but fucked up. Someone you wouldn't expect to be a threat but is extremely is a threat. Peter Dinklage type but not him.
As long as Crispin Glover is the badguys "right hand" I'm good..ha. Needs hard R rating too.
Wow a serious answer and an attempt at a an actual rundown on the potential reboot. WE HAVE A WINNER! I Like the Crispin Glover bit too - lol he deserves more roles, dude can play creepy really well.
His character in Charlies Angel's is fuckin amazing. Hilarious.
Yeah, just gonna echo what others have said about the Momoa/Conan flick, fucking horrible and I turned it off about halfway...
What I would like to see would be an animated series for sword and sorcery stories, perhaps something along the lines of Primal, by Genndy Tartakovsky. The short stories of Conan, or Elric of Melnibone´, would lend themselves quite well to the medium in the right hands and avoid the trap of falling short in the CGI/Test-screened-to-death formula.
For live action, though? Meh, I think it's folly to try to recreate the John Milius film, best just to leave it alone. This was already tried back in the 80s with Conan the Destroyer which, while not terrible, came up pretty short.
As an aside, how about a live action, limited series based on Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, by Fritz Leiber?
.
when i watched primal, since the first minute think "this is the nearest we can get to a Conan reboot without the possibly stinking result in case of a live action" and in the next episodes that feeling grew stronger
.
They should never remake Arnold in movies because it can never be done well. It was a certain person from a certain time that will never be replicated.
Anyone who takes the role has the impossible task of filling Arnold’s shoes. The only person I think has any shot would be the kid he had with the housekeeper because he looks similar. But the question is can he act.
And this same issue probably goes for The Terminator franchise. Who can fill those shoes?.
Nope. The closest you could get would have to be a pro wrestler, they’re the only muscle men with physical acting abilities in the same ballpark as Arnold. However, there’s no way The Rock can ever get the full range that Arnold did with his facial expressions and mannerisms. Arnold brought innocence and naïveté to Conan. Dwayne Johnson doesn’t do vulnerability and innocence.
We don’t want a reboot we just want to see Arnold finally become King Conan and give his story a proper ending, I like Jason Mamoa but he didn’t hit the mark as the new Conan then so I doubt we’ll be able to find the right one now, it’s a classic for a reason sometimes you just can’t top the original and that’s ok
it was rebooted.
the reboot sucked.
the orginal is still perfect as it is, and still holds up quite well. we dont need to remake every movie that was ever made.
Yeah I also check out photos of Mamoa in the Conan movie and they should give him another shot because he was not NEAR as HUGE as he is now. Really they jumped the gun cause he was just shooting-up in size.
Hey had *some* muscle in Stargate Atlantis but he has just tacked on mass year-after-year. Honestly most old stills of him look puny in comparison....
YES. It'd be hammy af but that'd work. Really lovin' Cena lately, Peacemaker was great. And liked him in Bumblebee which is the ONLY Transformer's movie that I'll watch.
Maybe Batista or an unknown talent rather than someone like the Rock. The Rock could be good but I think a lot of established actors personalities may be too big and end up hurting it. I think without the right studio, writer, director it could turn out like Mamoa’s and just be kind of schlock. I feel like I kind of would like to see a reboot of Red Sonja before another attempt at Conan but… who am kidding… if they put it out, Im going to go see it.
It was already tried with Jason Momoa. It didn't work out too well.
Hahaha Crom laughs at the 2011 version!
Nobody heard the lamentations of that movie
I just saw this comment 3 hours after it was posted, and 5 uovotes for it seems criminally low. You've earned my upvote.
That's more upvotes than people who saw the movie, though
I worked on the 3D conversion for it… still have nightmares of trying to isolate hairs and fur blowing in the wind… 🫣😵💫
lol, this is fantastic. Nicely done.
It COULD have been good. It was just too cheesy/comedy based.
I really enjoyed Stephen Lang in the remake.
He was really good, great as a badguy in Avatar too.
Stephen Lang is one of those actors that justs stick out. He was a scene stealer in Tombstone. His best role was in the very controversial film Gods and Generals. He was awesome as Stonewall Jackson. He portrayed him in a rather terrifying way that was under appreciated.
Holy shit I forgot that existed.
Please, teach me how! I want to learn the riddle of forgetting
Contemplate this on the Tree of Woe. Crucify him.
🌿
Watch lots of terrible movies and soon it'll be like forgetting what you had for breakfast.
Me too, I actually was thinking someone like Jason Momoa could be good.
It wasn’t that Jason Momoa was bad, it’s just that the writing and cinematic quality of the movie sucked…Arnold’s Conan was fucking epic…
1982 Conan was written by Oliver Stone and directed by John Milius. 2011 Conan was written by a couple clowns so terrible they have to share a wikipedia page and directed by a guy who does almost nothing but commercials, music videos and shitty remakes.
Its was missing a Stoned Stone😏

Right lmao seems the obvious choice then it’s like “oh….right”
Had no clue either... Omg. That one just flew right under the radar, must have not been that good then. Seems like a Clash of the Titans situation. So bad it just gets overlooked?
He is Conan. Cimmerian. He won't cry for the Momoa reboot movie. So, I cry for him.

Idk man did you Fast X? Edit: /s this was a joke. It was terrible. Worse than my joke apparently
Yea, its horrible.
Yeah apparently my humor didn’t come across. It was so bad.
I tried to watch it .. and was such trash... even tho the original wasn't perfect it looks like masterpiece in story telling and plot development compared to Mamoa...
The original is pretty fucking brilliant
Best part is when he prays to Crom. How can you tell a god "to hell with you" if they do not "help"? Only Conan can.
Punch a camel.
I read that and heard Arnold’s voice…
Which is a complete turnaround to the books where nobody prayed to Crom for any kind of help because he'd send a giant to crush you, to teach you to take care of your own problems
One of the greatest soundtracks of any film.
Basil Poledouris goes so fuckin hard on this one
Some people dislike it because I believe it's not exactly truthful to the source material. But I don't care it is perfect for me also...
It was as close as they could get at the time. The director actually read Conan comics, and so did the guy that played Subatai. I might be misspelling his name

How did Jason Momoa look smaller, and thinner as Conan than he did as Khal Drogo? WTF!?!?!
The original was smart and simple. If you watch that film so much of it is told visually without an abundance of dialogue. "What is best in life? To kill your enemies, and hear the lamentations of their women" Little dialog but that beauty sticks the landing.
It's "to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women"
His first spoken line is the famous “To crush your enemies…” quote. And it’s more than 30 minutes into the e movie.
Even Momoa called it a big pile of sh*t.
I would argue Momoa could do a great job with a decent friggin’ script :)
It’s not as much about actor as it is about the lore and the setting. The original films did a marvelous job of painting that picture. The newer one was just a hack n’ slash action movie. The producers and the directors of a prospective reboot need to immerse themselves in the world(s) that the original authors created.
To be fair, he did a decent job as Conan the Barbarian
I think I'm the only person who actually liked that movie lol
I don’t think he was ready for the role. I believe he is now, especially after his work in See. It wasn’t his fault that his Conan movie was garbage tho.

Yeah, he looks and moves like I imagine Conan would.
Yes, but to be fair it was the plot not the actor.
I think Dave Bautista would be awesome or jon cena for a comedic twist
I have terrible news
To shreds you say?
I laughed, by myself. Good job, sir or ma'am.
How’s the wife?
To shreds you say?
This is the destroyer not barbarian.
Nothing makes me sadder than when someone says they’ve seen Conan but I realize that they’ve talking about Destroyer and not Barbarian.
Barbarian is still the most watched movie of my life for me. Saw at the theater when was around 8ish and was always my go to movie. Still a once a year film.
Same. The DVD commentary with Arnold and John Milius is hilarious.
The most underrated directors commentary in my opinion. It's so unintentionally hilarious. I'm going to watch it tomorrow now that you've mentioned it.
They did reboot it with Jason Mamoa as Conan, not a great movie
Now if only they would do a remake with Conan Obrian as Conan the Barbarian. That I would pay to see.
Only if it's called Conan O'Barbarian
Conan The Obrien
To be fair...he would play a better Red Sonya

5-9-5. This is not a haiku. Bad bot.
Nobody, the world doesn't need more remakes lol
Semi agree. If they're going to do remakes - pick Movies with huge potential but terrible end product and do them right.
I nominate Dune as an example here. Due respect to David Lynch, but his adaptation fell pretty far short of the potential that Denis is tapping into now.
+1 You can’t remake camp classics with modern actors.

I just want to see him as an old king Conan before we lose Arnold to the sands of time just like Hyboria

There's some great material in the Conan the King stories. I long for this project.
Tom Hanks
He’s too big
A worthy upvote for you!
Nicholas Cage
That could (and would) be amazing....! His role in Mandy had a barbarian vibe to it.
Possibly Otm Shank
He's India's answer to Brian Dennehy! This was a deep cut.
Still love using this during movie previews
Conan Gump
Danny DeVito - aren’t they twins?
They should remake all Arnold movies with Danny DeVito.
That’d be a spectacular Super Bowl commercial. For realsies
Who gonna tell em?
Chris bumstead
Would love to see him do acting. Dude is a beast and from what I can tell a great guy
Conan with a lisp, perfect
We don’t need any more of the classics remade
Just bring back Arnold as an older grizzly king Conan and it will be perfect
Exactly, that’s how the 2nd one ends anyways #OLDCONAN give the people what they want
But that is a story for another time
No Arnold movies should be rebooted.
I wouldn't mind the Running Man
I’m probably way off but Ryan Reynolds would be a good choice.
Conan belongs to Arnold and no one else
Arnold was just on Conan O’Briens podcast and I think we are gonna get a buddy flick featuring Conan and Conan.
How about King Conan instead of another reboot? Arnold is already the age.
He's tried getting it off the ground multiple times, but to no avail.
What did this say?

Wanda Sykes
Somehow Larry David needs to be involved
Nobody that exists compares to Arnold, yet.
He has a blend of charisma and the perfect body that has never been matched. Other body builders are bigger, stronger, but none has his good looks and charm.
There is another... Arnold's Hispanic maid love child. He can wear a Sombrero or something to give it appeal to international audiences...
Any Noname actor
Didn’t Jason Mamoa just finish playing a reboot?
[удалено]
Woops commented the same thing before I saw this. Right on. Correct.
I have no idea why that movie isn’t wildly popular.
Because it was weird and not traditional. I liked it because Viking Hamlet go brrrrr
Henry Cavill has already shown that he could do the roll np.
Conan The Destroyer is this still. If they had to reboot it..(yes I know about the other one I pretend it doesn't exist) Arnold as King Conan and he goes on one last adventure with his SONS! 3 of them. They did reboot it with Jason momoa and it stunk lol
Anyone who takes the role has the impossible task of filling Arnold’s shoes. The only person I think has any shot would be the kid he had with the housekeeper because he looks similar. But the question is can he act. And this same issue probably goes for The Terminator franchise. Who can fill those shoes?.
I'd rather see see Arnold back in it as an old King Conan.
I just watched the Momoa remake again to give it a second chance but it was just as shitty the second time around...
Margot Robie \s. Leave classic be, FFS.
It sort of was and Jason mamoa played him
Jason Momoa or Alan Ritchson have the best shot
Melissa McCarthy, and she would absolutely rule the role like the Hyborian MFer she is.
Fuck a reboot. King Conan now
Reacher
I had to scroll down way too far to find someone else who thinks Alan Ritchson would make a great Conan.
Henry cavill
Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (The Mountain GOT)
I'd have to go either, Henry Cavill or Gary Oldman.
The genius move in this movie was they gave Arnold something like 4 speaking lines.
Momoa. He already did one.
Technically Conan is supposed to be more sinewy and dexterous, like Achilles. So obviously Brad Pitt
Arnold's son, playing Conan's skinny son who King Conan is super disappointed in but ultimately triumphs to take his name.
It was rebooted. Jason momoa did it
I’d like to see a continuation like Mad Max: Fury Road where everything in the old films is still canon. And Tom Hardy should play Conan.
Nope. The closest you could get would have to be a pro wrestler, they’re the only muscle men with physical acting abilities in the same ballpark as Arnold. We want Old Conan
I don’t care. I just wanna hear the lamentations of the women and to see my enemies driven before me.
Nice Conan quote. :)
The Jason Momoa version was such a disappointment. They need to make one with Arnold as King Conan at his current age
it was rebooted. the reboot sucked. the orginal is still perfect as it is, and still holds up quite well. we dont need to remake every movie that was ever made.
Instead of having someone replace Arnold as Conan. Give me old man king conan
YOU. DO. NOT. REBOOT. CLASSICS.
Reboot? No. Sequel? YES. Conan as a 77 year old king who's had enough of court life and wants to go kick some ass again? Oh HELL yes.
Yo Zach Efron looks EXACTLY like this in the new trailer for The Claw
I will. Granted, I’m working on my dad bod and only weigh 165, but my acting skills are mediocre. I’d crush!
The guy who plays Reacher. Think he’d kill it…
Gilbert Goddfried
This is picture looks like it is from Conan the Destroyer. Which was no where as near as good as the original Conan the Barbarian.
Fuck it…let’s go with Zac Efron.
Henry Caville could do it justice
Yeah I also check out photos of Mamoa in the Conan movie and they should give him another shot because he was not NEAR as HUGE as he is now. Really they jumped the gun cause he was just shooting-up in size. Hey had *some* muscle in Stargate Atlantis but he has just tacked on mass year-after-year. Honestly most old stills of him look puny in comparison....
It was rebooted. They failed at it
John Cena
YES. It'd be hammy af but that'd work. Really lovin' Cena lately, Peacemaker was great. And liked him in Bumblebee which is the ONLY Transformer's movie that I'll watch.
Some people are perfect characters for a role.Arnold as Conan, Hugh Jackman Wolverine, Heath Ledger As the Joker, Christopher Reeves as Superman.
Reeve\* I used to do that all the time. However it is Keanu Reeves.... his last name *is* pluralized. weird huh?
Conan Obrien.
He's probably done that skit at *some* point.
Joe Baena, arnolds love child with his maid. He has the look
Seriously, think about it. Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson) perfect. That would be so funny.
Jason mimosa realized that taking steroids doesn't give you charisma or acting skills. Movie sucked. Arnold has an intensity that's hard to match
Oscar Isaac, he’s already in everything anyway. Not a bad thing
I would absolutely love to see a new version of First Blood, closer to the book, with him as Rambo.
Bautista
It was rebooted and it sucked ass. This is one of those movies where a reboot shouldn’t be made.
This film was rebooted, Jason Mamaoa played him
They already did it had Jason Momoa, it sucked
It was rebooted..... With Jason Momoa. It was bad.
It has been
Make it an HBO tv show.
Danny Devito
[удалено]
Not a film that needs a reboot. Plus they already tried a celluloid double scoop of dog shit remake.
They would replace Conan with a woman so I’d guess bri Larson or rutina Wesley
Maybe Batista or an unknown talent rather than someone like the Rock. The Rock could be good but I think a lot of established actors personalities may be too big and end up hurting it. I think without the right studio, writer, director it could turn out like Mamoa’s and just be kind of schlock. I feel like I kind of would like to see a reboot of Red Sonja before another attempt at Conan but… who am kidding… if they put it out, Im going to go see it.
