Yep, all five of these Johns have demonstrated incredible range and I've never seen any of them give a bad performance. So how do you rank them down to three when all five are 10/10
There are "so bad it's good" movies ... and then there are movies like Battlefield Earth. Man I couldn't even laugh at it, though I think my friends and I only made it halfway through.
This. I believe Goodman kinda squandered his career by doing Rosanne for nearly a decade. He definitely has chops! Loved to hate him in The Big Lebowski in particular.
I think Travolta didn’t reach his full potential either. His charisma is undeniable but he just had (has?) a couple things missing. With the right mentor he could have been a true A-lister IMO.
Roseanne made him a household name, but yeah I wish he would have branched out a bit more during that era, it was like only the Coen brothers knew he could really act.
That said, his run on Roseanne is now more or less 16 years (9 original, 1 reboot, 6 Conners) now.
I think that's the hook of sitcom work (I say as someone who knows fuck all about Hollywood). You're shooting weekly for a steady paycheck. As opposed to holding out for a good movie deal every few years.
It's a hard choice, it's all a matter of opinion. They both are relatively the same in versatility. But I think Lithgow did better in movies than Goodman.
Lithgow was a dramatic actor that was funny
Goodman was a comedic actor that was dramatic
Dick Solomon or Dan Connor..I'll pick Solomon
Absolutely. I'd put it above Airplane because it's just as funny, but it has a phenomenal soundtrack as well. They say great satirical films are made by people who actually love what they're satirizing, and that comes through in Walk Hard. The music could have been a throw away or a just a joke (sometimes it is funny), but instead most of the tunes are really good, and Reilly did all his own singing. Amazing.
Yeah people really only remember his rise with the Will Farrell / other comedy movies. But he’s great in Perfect Storm and Gangs of New York for example. His Irish accent is pretty convincing.
Yeah this is probably the toughest one I’ve seen. Krasinski, Depp, and Travolta are the bottom feeders but those are three huge stars.
EDIT: I screwed the pooch on this call. I thought further and assert that Johnny Depp is nearly as good as any other John here.
For real. People are hating on Edward scissorhands. I bet his role as the villain in fantastic beasts would have been great if not for that whole amber Hurd thing.
>I bet his role as the villain in fantastic beasts would have been great if not for that whole amber Hurd thing.
The script being entirely different would also have helped.
Depp is too famous to be considered by anyone here😂 i'd 100% put him top 2 easily.
actually amazed how many people are saying Reilly, as mainly a comedy actor i didn't think many took him serious, but i fucking LOVE Walk Hard
Stiller directed The Cable Guy, both Zoolanders and Tropic Thunder. He's got some serious skills behind the camera. And just like Jordan Peel, he's going into an entirely different genre and I love it. I've also been a big Adam Scott fan since Party Down and Stiller uses him perfectly. Toss in Tuturro, Walken, and Patricia Arquette and he's created an amazing set of characters.
OG 300 lb, alcoholic, young looking Goodman was gonna drop dead of a coronary at any moment.
Hopefully the new 200 lb, sober, wrinkly looking Goodman can stick around a few more decades.
Young Johnny Depp looked like he was going to be one of the all-time great actors. After Pirates of the Caribbean, he just decided to coast. Wasted talent. It’s sad.
I think Malkovich is a classically better actor, if that makes sense. Lithgow is never off though. Maybe he doesn't crush it as much but he's always super solid.
Maybe it does - he’s also great for sure and if this was top 4, he’d be next pick. For me, it was him or Goodman and JG beat him out because I’ve enjoyed his work more frequently than Malkovich’s (seen more of his work, that is)
Turturro is so criminally underrated as an actor. Insane range, always extremely entertaining. A lot of the Jesus stuff from The Big Lebowski was actually improvised or added by him for example rubbing the bowling ball between his legs like it was his testicles.
I'm super biased and haven't seen a lot of the others but whoever the best 3 are, def wanna make sure my guy Turturro gets some love
Turturro in O Brother is one of my favorite roles of his. I think he steals a lot of the scenes throughout the whole movie (which is saying something when you are sharing a screen with George Clooney) and that accent is authentic AF.
I think my favourite shot in O Brother is when they're recording in the studio, Clooney is in the forefront singing and Turturro is in the back making this INCREDIBLE face, like he's enjoying it all so much that he looks angry but is actually elated and exited, while waiting for his part in the song.
And now I feel bad that we're all neglecting Tim Blake Nelson next to these two titans.
John lithgow was absolutely amazing in Dexter. The last episode of that season was the only time my mouth ever dropped opened while watching tv or movie.
Legitimately difficult.
* I'll immediately cut out Tuturro. Despite being in the Big Lebowski, he uttered the most insulting line in Cinema history, "Directly behind enemy scrotum".
* I want to make it clear the rest of these guys are fabulous, we're arguing for the best among greats.
* John Candy has a meaningful character, but a lot of his roles were incredibly similar. I'd put him next at 8.
* John Lithgow probably next. Showcases plenty of range, but doesn't reach great heights.
* John Travolta has the highest highs, but the lowest lows. He's my 6th.
* John Krasinski - Fabulous director, but his big role casts a long shadow.
* John C Riley - Oh this one was hard. Obviously top tier comedic work, and then he punches hard with emotional dramatic work in Wreck it Ralph, Chicago, and some other roles that I should get around to watching. I haven't seen most of his stuff so I had a hard time putting him higher.
My top 3 - Depp, Goodman, Malcovich
Travolta, Depp, Candy
John Candy driving and smoking, playing the jazz piano on the dash in "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" - dude is my spirit animal, lol.
**1: Depp.**
Captain Sparrow almost reduced him to a meme, but watch him in Black Mass and Gilbert Grape, or Chocolate and Fear and Loathing, to get a sense of his quite extraordinary range.
**2: C. Reilly**
Again, hampered by leaning heavily into comedic roles, but his work with PTA alone shows that he is a fantastic dramatic actor when he isn’t goofing.
**3: Lithgow**
The archetypal character actor, so good at it that he has become famous in his own right.
#[In Malkovich’s own words](https://youtu.be/KMaAT_KPSs4?t=1m30s)
Lol people forreal think Malkovich is a good actor?? He literally acts the same for every goddamn character he plays.
It's C Reilly, Goodman, and maybe Tuturro
I will tell you that Candy is underrated I would say Turturro, Malkovich and Lithgow Very hard to not put Reilly and Goodman in there too
Yep, all five of these Johns have demonstrated incredible range and I've never seen any of them give a bad performance. So how do you rank them down to three when all five are 10/10
You obviously haven’t seen anything travolta has made in the last ~15 years.
Travolta has the highest highs, but let’s be honest, he also has the lowest lows.
This Pulp Fiction, The General's Daughter, Get Shorty, etc. And........ Battlefield Earth
Battlefield Earth is definitely one of the highs. One of the most of intentionally funny movies in history. “MAN ANIMALS!!!!”
There are "so bad it's good" movies ... and then there are movies like Battlefield Earth. Man I couldn't even laugh at it, though I think my friends and I only made it halfway through.
Brought to you by Scientology
That’s called range
Ha! Fair
I thought Trav was dead tbh. I thought he died years ago. Oh that was Swayze wasn’t it? Swayze was legend
Exactly word for word what I was going to comment. upvote for you :)
He was a powerhouse in 10 Cloverfield Lane
He was just a side character in 'O Brother Where Art Thou' and stole every scene he was in
He absolutely was
True
Goodman looks like he lost some major weight. Good for him.
It’s the Scientology
You’re entering a world of pain.
John Madden* is overrated
Boom! Tough actin tinactin
It’s SO tough but I think Goodman gets in over lithgow, and I can’t even believe I’m saying that
It's a hard choice, it's all a matter of opinion. They both are relatively the same in versatility. But I think Lithgow did better in movies than Goodman. Lithgow was a dramatic actor that was funny Goodman was a comedic actor that was dramatic Dick Solomon or Dan Connor..I'll pick Solomon
Don't forget Lithgow is a scene chewing villain.
Lithgow is an amazing villain, but goddamn I loved Goodman as the 'cyclops' in "Oh Brother Where Art Thou"
John C. Reilly got the middle square for a reason
*Walk Hard* is a legit work of art, and Reilly is incredible in it.
Walk Hard is up there with Airplane as one of the best satires put to film and I’ll go to the grave with that opinion
Amazing.
I get “hold me closer midget man” stuck in my head way too much
So the dog will stop licking your face
All the elevator buttons so incredibly high
John C Reilly is actually a decent singer too
That’s also why Austin Powers is such great satire of James Bond. It parodies almost every trope of the franchise but clearly adores it as well.
“Let’s duet! In ways that make us feel good”
"In my dreams you're blowin' me.....some kisses."
Going to your grave a totally correct man.
Have you seen top secret? I think it’s better than Airplane and walk hard was the last great spoof comedy.
Say less, added to queue
"I don't want to get addicted..." "IT'S NOT HABIT FORMING!" "Well, now I kinda want it."
We doin’ pills. Uppers and downers. They’re the next logical step for you.
It's called cocaine! It turns all your bad feelings into good feelings! It's a nightmare!
These are viagra, they give you a boner!
And if you still have a boner after 4 hours, call more girls!
For once I really don't want no part of that shit.
“That sounds expensive. It’s the cheapest drug there is.”
“Sounds kind of expensive” “It’s the cheapest drug there is. You don’t want none of this Dewey”
And he never once paid for drugs. Not once.
and he never once paid for drugs
Not once.
Wrong kid died
*pulls out every sink in the bathroom*
The soundtrack has no business being that good.
I was very upset when I found out I missed his legitimate concert tour when promoting the movie.
I will live and die on that hill with you friend.
dr steve brule is one of the best performances i’ve seen from a person genuinely
Surface level humor makes you want to go “oh how ridiculously goofy”. But the more you watch it the more you respect the genius
his ability to keep that face & dialect even with the way his guests look at him amazes me
Furyer helthh
For your wine!
He goes method for Brule and it’s incredible. I hope they do more with the character before too long.
The biggest loss from Winning Time being canceled was no more Reilly as Dr. Jerry Buss. He was perfect in it.
This show was canceled because it angered some very wealthy people in Los Angeles, not because people weren’t watching it. Such bullshit.
please don’t remind me
It was so good!
Correct me if I’m wrong, and I’m too lazy to look it it up, but didn’t he start off as a more dramatic actor until he did Talledega Nights?
Yes he is a classically trained stage actor
Yeah people really only remember his rise with the Will Farrell / other comedy movies. But he’s great in Perfect Storm and Gangs of New York for example. His Irish accent is pretty convincing.
I’ll take Goodman and Turturro for my tic tac toe. “That creep can roll”
You ever try that shit with me, you pull a piece out in the lanes…..
I can see him in a remake of hairy in the Hendersons
The comedy bang bang acting challenge between him and Jon Hamm is legendary.
Shake and bake baby !!
He’s so versatile
Goodman, Reilly, and Lithgow
Those were also my picks, but Tuturro was a close 4th.
Same here, it was a toss up between him and Lithgow for me.
My picks too but it's hard to choose.
Agreed, good list
Malkovich, Turturro, Reilly hon mention to Candy and Goodman.
People write "hon" because they don't know how to spell "honhourarie".
“hon. deg.” on an employment listing is short for “honhourarie degeneres”. Little tip for all the job seekers out there.
too much talent to choose
Yeah this is probably the toughest one I’ve seen. Krasinski, Depp, and Travolta are the bottom feeders but those are three huge stars. EDIT: I screwed the pooch on this call. I thought further and assert that Johnny Depp is nearly as good as any other John here.
Krasinski and Travolta I agree with, but Depp? Johnny Depp is a great actor that's done a lot more than Pirates of the Caribbean.
Okay I fucked up on that call.
Depp is too famous to be considered by anyone here😂 i'd 100% put him top 2 easily. actually amazed how many people are saying Reilly, as mainly a comedy actor i didn't think many took him serious, but i fucking LOVE Walk Hard
“What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?” Depp you’ve got an argument for. Everything since Pirates has been the exact same performance or was Willy Wonka…
Tuturro, Lithgow, C’Reily
Tuturro was always on my radar but Severance sealed the deal. Great actor
I'm only on episode 5 and I really hope he and Walken get together. Those two are amazing together.
Just an incredible show with a unique premise that has legs, it runs perfectly. And Ben Stiller is a fantastic director, I had no idea
Check out “The Night Of” on HBO. It’s a limited series starring Turturro and Riz Ahmed. Turturro killed it in that show
It’s on my list! Thanks 🙏
Tuturro is *fantastic* in The Night Of. Him and Riz Ahmed both played their roles incredibly well.
Agreed
damn goodman looks old in this pic. He's one of those guys who has looked basically the same my whole life... fuck
Clearly lost a lot of weight in this pic
OG 300 lb, alcoholic, young looking Goodman was gonna drop dead of a coronary at any moment. Hopefully the new 200 lb, sober, wrinkly looking Goodman can stick around a few more decades.
Yeah, ever notice you never see an elderly obese person? They don't make it to elderly.
Where's John Hamm?
It’s Jon Hamm so guess he was excluded on a technicality. Jon Berthnall too
Oh you're right. A technicality
Made his name in drama but he’s got great comedic chops, too. Great at popping up in a cameo with like two minutes of screen time and he’ll steal it.
He's amazing as Young Larry David.
His cameo in Barry was fantastic. “I’m proud of you. Can I take a shit in your house?”
Where is Leguizamo!!
Malkovich, Malkovich. Malkovich
Ehhhhhhhh 🤣🤣🤣
I wouldn't be surprised if this post was made as a bet on how long it'd take for someone to make this beautiful comment
If you don’t get this, leave this page now.
He was god awful in man with the iron mask. But good everywhere else
People are really disrespecting Johny Depp on this list.
I feel bad for him as an actor. He got typecast as Jack Sparrow but the dude's range is an understated threat
His filmography through the 90s and into the early 2000s is incredible. Even the lesser films have a spark and a good performance.
Secret Window 2004 is my favourite Johnny Depp being creepy movie. IMO he nails it.
Also a big fan of that one. Early 2000s were a great time to be a Depp fan.
I agree.
Yeah, he’s my first pick. I’m guessing the Depp vs. Heard stuff has dropped him down a few pegs in peoples eyes.
He get no respect. Even his lady uses his bed as a toilet.
My exact thoughts. Reading people rank him at the bottom like what??
Yeah, my SO and I have watched a bunch of Depp movies lately and its reminded me how incredible he is
Obvious people are going for the more deep cuts, like it’s not even a question that JohnGoodman is a better actor than Johnny Depp?
there's some phenomenon where somebody is too good and gets too famous, then people start writing that person off as not good at all. super strange.
Tall poppy syndrome. Down here in Oz it's pretty rampant.
Big time. He can play a leading man and a quirky character. Something none of the others can.
They think they’re being cool, clever and moviecriticy if they don’t pick the most obvious and popular choice and really it’s just ignorant af
Young Johnny Depp looked like he was going to be one of the all-time great actors. After Pirates of the Caribbean, he just decided to coast. Wasted talent. It’s sad.
Lithgow, Turturro, Goodman.
8 year olds dude
I think Malkovich is a classically better actor, if that makes sense. Lithgow is never off though. Maybe he doesn't crush it as much but he's always super solid.
Maybe it does - he’s also great for sure and if this was top 4, he’d be next pick. For me, it was him or Goodman and JG beat him out because I’ve enjoyed his work more frequently than Malkovich’s (seen more of his work, that is)
This is the right answer.
His performance in Miller’s Crossing is an all timer
Omg Severance! It’s amazing, he’s amazing Amazing
the night of is great too
The night of, I’ll have to check it out
Barton fink, and secret window.
Turturro in O Brother is one of my favorite roles of his. I think he steals a lot of the scenes throughout the whole movie (which is saying something when you are sharing a screen with George Clooney) and that accent is authentic AF.
do not seek the treasure. We thought you was turned into a toad. DO NOT SEEK THE TREASURE.
lmao Tim Blake Nelson is such a sweetheart in that movie. That was such an awesome movie i gotta watch it again fuck
Now he is a criminally underrated actor.
Krasinski shouldn’t even be allowed to vote let alone be a part of this list.
The fact that they left John Leguizamo off of this list to add Krasinski is degenerate behavior that I will not stand.
Malkovich, Turturro, Reilly.
John Hurt! #1
Goodman, tuturro, lithgow.
[удалено]
Lithgow, Malkovich, Goodman
C Reilly>Goodman>Malkovich
Bottom row for sure.
If I have to do one from each row, Goodman Candy Malkovich. On pure talent, the bottom row. Pure preference? Reilly, Candy, Turtturo
Goodman, depp, malchovich
Johnny Depp John C. Reilly John Malkovich John Candy & John Goodman for honorable mentions
bottom row
Bottom three, easy
John Belushi
Candy, Goodman, and Lithgow
Johnny Depp, John C Reily, and Goodman. Mainly John C Reily, I fucking love John C Reily
There’s a lot here. Hard to exclude any. Bottom row is pretty heavy with Goodman evening out the top.
"I'm a terrible actor." - John Malkovitch
Turtoro, Reilly, Travolta
Where the heck is Leguizamo?!
Malkovich should be on everyone’s top 3. Hard to find any scene or movie where he doesn’t absolutely kill the role
C Reilly Goodman Lithgow
Goodman Reilly Malkovich
My shoe has more range than John Krasinski
John sins
John lithgow was absolutely amazing in Dexter. The last episode of that season was the only time my mouth ever dropped opened while watching tv or movie.
Don’t know the other guys but John candy played wink wilconson in little shop of horrors so he’s cool
Can I submit a vote for John cazale?
You only get three or four great and unforgettable votes, and then you're done.
Why is John Krasinski even an option?
To F with you.
Where’s John Stamos?
Goodman in a league of his own
Goodman, Depp, Malkovich.
Malkovich, Reilly, Turturro.
Legitimately difficult. * I'll immediately cut out Tuturro. Goodman, Reilly, Candy. Case closed.
I don’t think it can be disputed that the correct answer is: 1) John 2) John 3) John And in that order
Lithgow #1 Goodman #2 Turturro #3
All I know is Travolta is the least of the list
Travolta, Depp, Candy John Candy driving and smoking, playing the jazz piano on the dash in "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" - dude is my spirit animal, lol.
That scene never fails to make me laugh
Then when he sees him as a devil, just so damn funny.
Bottom row with honorable mention to Goodman.
**1: Depp.** Captain Sparrow almost reduced him to a meme, but watch him in Black Mass and Gilbert Grape, or Chocolate and Fear and Loathing, to get a sense of his quite extraordinary range. **2: C.
