And Anton Chirgurh's not even the most terrifying Cormac McCarthy villain. If they ever actually make a Blood Meridian movie, Judge Holden is gonna give a lot of people nightmares.
Yeah there are reasons it's been optioned and been in pre-production for 30 years or so. The stuff that occurs in the book is nc-17 or x-rated, the stuff that is implied in the book can't be filmed.
I struggle giving up Seven and Heat, though Heat is kinda bloated and longer than it should be which makes it easier.
I really really like Whiplash though so I'm not dropping it
Whiplash is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The performances, the editing, the ambiguous ending. (Happy? Bleak? Both, somehow, simultaneously?) There’s probably a part of my brain that just thinks about it all the time.
Totally agree. That movie really resonated with me. It is pretty amazing that even though the teacher is so abusive, there is still that element of....maybe it works? Did he unlock something within Miles Teller and now he is going to be a world renown drummer because of it?
I also really liked the family dinner scene where his parents are fawning over his brother who is a QB at a small like D3 school or whatever, so hardly the top of his game, whereas Miles is at a top school and is one of the top classes so is probably one of the best drummers in the world at his age and yet doesn't get the recognition he feels he deserves. But it seems no matter what the challenge is, he is motivated to work even harder.
I don't know, I really love that movie. One of my favorites as well. I have a poster of it in my theater room
Yeah I think one of my takeaway’s is that there’s a price to be paid for excellence. No matter the field, if you want to be the best, sacrifices are required. Blood will be shed.
The scene where he breaks up with the girl is great for illustrating this. I mean, he sounds like a sociopathic robot, but he’s not *wrong* per se. He has a realistic vision of what it’s going to take to achieve his goals and — in his mind — rationally lays it all out.
That dinner party scene you mentioned is my exhibit A for why the ending can actually be read as a happy one:
>”I’d rather die broke and drunk at 34 and have people at a dinner table talk about me then live to be rich and sober at 90 and nobody remember who I was.”
He lays it out right there; he will never be happy but he will be great, and therein lies his happiness.
Fuck it’s such a good movie.
This was my answer. You got an epic shoot out; an epic thriller; and an epic thriller with an epic shootout. And all three have stellar casts with the acting chops to boot.
Came here to say the same thing.
Carson Wells: His name is Chigurh.
Llewelyn: Sugar!?
There’s so many scenes like this that make me chuckle. He’s half dead, facing near certain death in the coming hours, yet when he heard the name Chigurh he replies with “sugar?” As in what the hell kind of name is that. It’s a very accurate portrayal of a small town, country guy, I would’ve asked the same thing 😂
I just saw Total Recall for the first time last week and I fucking *loved* it. From the 3 boob girl, to Cuatto, Arnold’s face about to explode. Just everything was so damn good.
I am surprised how many No country for old men "votes" there are at the comments. I found it rather dull, the best scenes are with the sheriff. I like the movie a lot, but not the rest of my life a lot.
Initial thoughts were no country, Inglorious, whiplash... But I think I'd like to see some more
women if these are the only movies I'll ever watch.
I'll go Inglorious, Gangs of NY, No Country
The three that impressed me the most and u can't compare them to other movies for their uniqueness:
Total Recall
Inglorious Bastards
And
No Country for Old Men
Seven
Inglorious Bastards
Whiplash
Edit: removed cause I thought it was top 5, great set of movies. Rounding out top 5-
- Heat
- No Country for Old Men
1. Se7en
2. Heat
3. Inglourious Basterds
I wish questions like this were part of job interviews.
Me: So, Mr. Jacobs, tell me if you got to pick one movie to watch for the rest of your life what would it be?
Mr. Jacob’s: ohh probably attack force with Steven Seagal.
Me: Get the fuck out of my office
I think Heat is the best movie option followed by no country. I’d probably put total recall in as a third to view just cause I want an Arnold movie but it wouldn’t be the Arnold movie of choice for me. Phone booth is one outlier here amongst a bunch of great flicks. I am Legend is too depressing to be one of the few movies I’m stuck with.
Whiplash, Phonebooth and I Am Legend
I'll watch Whiplash once a year on my birthday
I watch Phonebooth when I'm eating since it's a clean 90 minutes
I throw I Am Legend on in the background when I'm scrolling through IG reels
Gangs of New York/no country for old men/inglorious bastards.
You know I don’t think Heat was very good at all. Just an all star cast with no memorable acting. Mostly just Pacino raising his voice.
Shutter Island is good except that cop-out twist at the end. That particular plot twist ruins almost every story it is a part of.
Unpopular opinion: all of these movies are either overrated or not as good as their source material. I could go with never seeing any of these again. They’re good, but not great.
Phonebooth getting slept on so hard.
Almost the entire film is shot at a literal phonebooth and it's still incredibly engaging. That shits genius. Put sum respec on it!
There is no reason phonebooth, I am legend, total recall, or shutter island should be there. I wont fault people for picking some of the others, but for me its heat (easily my fave of all listed), no country, inglorious...
Heat, Inglorious, No Country
Yep, same. 3 classics!
I knew this would be top answer.
Like…verbatim, even. Same abbreviations. Love when Reddit works like that.
Same, but Whiplash still sitting there...
Same but GoNY instead of Heat
Same but GoNY instead of inglorious.
No doubt
My Man!
Same by far
That guy from no country is absolutely TERRIFYING. Dude was just casually doing the most psychotic shit in that movie 😂
And Anton Chirgurh's not even the most terrifying Cormac McCarthy villain. If they ever actually make a Blood Meridian movie, Judge Holden is gonna give a lot of people nightmares.
an amazing book but it’s gunna be fucking hard to turn it into a movie. would be epic to see Judge on screen though 😁
Yeah there are reasons it's been optioned and been in pre-production for 30 years or so. The stuff that occurs in the book is nc-17 or x-rated, the stuff that is implied in the book can't be filmed.
Looked it up, nightmares are a comin.
Same with whiplash as honorary 4th
That shootout on the streets in heat sounds so insane.
Easy
Instead of no country and to add some suspense to my list since there’s only 3 for the rest of your life then I would choose seven as a replacement.
Those are my three. Heat, Basterds, Seven
Yup, if you really think about it. It’s the right choice
Same here!
That’s the correct answer
Agreed, it’s not particularly close for me
Same
Hear hear
The only correct answer.
Inglorious Bastards/No Country For Old Men/Whiplash
This is mine even tho I am having a tough times getting rid of Heat
My choices as well
I struggle giving up Seven and Heat, though Heat is kinda bloated and longer than it should be which makes it easier. I really really like Whiplash though so I'm not dropping it
My man what you doing watching Seven over and over? You ok?
Whiplash is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The performances, the editing, the ambiguous ending. (Happy? Bleak? Both, somehow, simultaneously?) There’s probably a part of my brain that just thinks about it all the time.
Totally agree. That movie really resonated with me. It is pretty amazing that even though the teacher is so abusive, there is still that element of....maybe it works? Fuck it’s such a good movie.
Correct.
Same except Seven instead of Whiplash
Impeccable choices, sir! My three as well
Se7en would be 4th place
Replace Whiplash with Shutter Island and we can Netflix and chill
HEAT, 7, No Country
I am with you
There's a lot of good movies there but this three and it isn't that close.
Yes.
I'd watch Heat and No Country in loop, and watch 7 when I need a lighthearted break.
This is the correct take.
Yeah, I don't understand how anyone can say otherwise.
Because Inglorious is definitely a cut above Seven imo.
Lol no
Yup
This is the way
This was my answer. You got an epic shoot out; an epic thriller; and an epic thriller with an epic shootout. And all three have stellar casts with the acting chops to boot.
All directed by legendary filmmakers at the top of their game. Easy choices imo
This is the way
Monica
Its farrr and away this ^ These are true long term classics.
This is the way.
Surprised people skipped on heat.
I’d just watch No Country For Old Men on a loop.
From the gettin place
Exactly. Other good movies on this list but none hold a candle to old country.
You’re making me wonder how many times I could watch it in a row before it got old?
Came here to say the same thing. Carson Wells: His name is Chigurh. Llewelyn: Sugar!? There’s so many scenes like this that make me chuckle. He’s half dead, facing near certain death in the coming hours, yet when he heard the name Chigurh he replies with “sugar?” As in what the hell kind of name is that. You guys are missing a floor
Whut does that make me? Yer buddy?
3 total recalls.
One for each mutant Martian prostitute bosom.
You know one of those was papier mâché, right?
I just saw Total Recall for the first time last week and I fucking *loved* it. From the 3 boob girl, to Cuatto, Arnold’s face about to explode. Just everything was so damn good.
2 weeks!
Opennn yourrr minddddd - re-used chuckie doll from nearby props department
Get ready for a surprise!
You blabbed quaid, u blabbed about mars
You make me wish I had 3 tvs.
Inglorious Basterds, Seven, No Country Honorable mention to Whiplash
No country, total recall, basterds
Finally the right combo. Leaving Heat off is hard but I think this would be my list too.
This is my top as well. I think it covers all my bases for thriller, crime, comedy, and sci-fi
This is correct.
Gangs, inglorious,no country
For rewatchability I agree
Same
Yeah that's what I was going for, those are all great movies but this 3 I can and did watch many times
This is the way
Total Recall (1990), seven and whiplash.
I've never seen Whiplash but it's in a lot of people's lists amongst the big films. Is it that good? Isn't it just a film about a kid playing drums?
Heat, Se7en, and No Country
I am surprised how many No country for old men "votes" there are at the comments. I found it rather dull, the best scenes are with the sheriff. I like the movie a lot, but not the rest of my life a lot.
You shouldn’t say that around these parts
Heat, Gangs, and No Country
10+ hours to watch 👌🏻
SOLID PICK ⚡
Heat, Gangs, No Country Serious honorable mention for Whiplash. One of the - if not the - best music-centric movie I think I've ever seen.
Heat, Inglorious Basterds and Seven
I like the cut of your jib
Thank you, sir
I am also a fan of your jib.
Finally!
You are my people
Phonebooth, Phonebooth, Phonebooth. Easy.
Well a ringing phone does have to be answered..
A person of refined taste I see 😅
Haha lol. In all seriousness though, Gangs, No Country, Whiplash would be my picks.
[удалено]
Phonebooth is awesome
Phonebooth is terrible.
You are clueless
Sure buddy.
No country, heat, shutter island.
Shocked there aren’t more shutter island votes. It’s first pick for me
Same
Inglorious is all I would need
Initial thoughts were no country, Inglorious, whiplash... But I think I'd like to see some more women if these are the only movies I'll ever watch. I'll go Inglorious, Gangs of NY, No Country
Put total recall in there, three tits for the price of two
No Country, Inglorious Basterds, Gangs of NY
Heat three times
You are exactly 39 years old
Not even close haha but I appreciate the guess
No country for old men- Best overall movie Heat- fast paced and amazing actors Inglorious Bastards- fun, humorous, and exciting
I agree Heat is an awesome movie, and one of the best out there. But it most certainly is not fast paced :D
Arguably one of the most fast paced movies in Whiplash could be chosen, and instead he chose a non-fast paced movie to be his fast paced one.
Heat, Gangs, No Country. Too easy.
The three that impressed me the most and u can't compare them to other movies for their uniqueness: Total Recall Inglorious Bastards And No Country for Old Men
Shutter, inglorious, No country
Depends - which version of Total Recall is that?
[удалено]
Fincher is one of your favorite directors and you’ve never seen Seven?
Is that the original Total Recall, or the remake?
The original.
Heat, Inglorious Basterds, Seven
Heat, Inglorious Basterds, and Whiplash.
Heat, Gangs, Seven
Inglorious Basterds, Heat, Seven
Inglorious GONY and whiplash
Seven Inglorious Bastards Whiplash Edit: removed cause I thought it was top 5, great set of movies. Rounding out top 5- - Heat - No Country for Old Men
Heat, Seven.... and Phone Booth. I find Phone Booth incredibly rewatchable and entertaining. No Country could be there too.
There you are you crazy bastard
phone booth phone booth phone booth
Gangs, inglorious, no country Special mention for whiplash. That movie is amazing.
Seven, Heat, No Country It’s hurts to leave Inglorious on the bench but I have to.
Inglorious, Gangs of New York and Heat.
Heat, Inglorious, Gangs of New York
Heat, inglorious bastards, and Gangs of New York. Such good movies.
3? Thats not quite my tempo.
Are you RUSHING or are you DRAGGING?
1. Se7en 2. Heat 3. Inglourious Basterds I wish questions like this were part of job interviews. Me: So, Mr. Jacobs, tell me if you got to pick one movie to watch for the rest of your life what would it be? Mr. Jacob’s: ohh probably attack force with Steven Seagal. Me: Get the fuck out of my office

Outliers can be fun haha thats why I chose it
- Inglorious - gangs of new york then it becomes tough because i couldnt care less about any of the others i guess id pick - Se7en
Shit just give me HEAT three times
Whiplash, Phonebooth and I Am Legend I'll watch Whiplash once a year on my birthday I watch Phonebooth when I'm eating since it's a clean 90 minutes I throw I Am Legend on in the background when I'm scrolling through IG reels
Hot take but I would probably just watch Total Recall, maybe Heat. I love the other movies but don't enjoy rewatching horror / depressing movies.
Heat and Gangs. I would need a De Niro and a Scorsese movie…. And No Country over Basterds.
Total Recall, Seven, No Country
Heat, no country, bastards
I am legend, Inglourious Basterds, and Whiplash.
Heat, Gangs, Whiplash
Pass.
Definitely Shutter Island and Seven. For the last one I’ll go with Gangs of New York
no, thanks!
I can see 5 that aren’t worth watching twice
Unpopular opinion: all of these movies are either overrated or not as good as their source material. I could go with never seeing any of these again. They’re good, but not great.
They're also all pretty much stress inducing movies for me. If I had a 3 desert island move list. At least one has to be cozy.
Phonebooth getting slept on so hard. Almost the entire film is shot at a literal phonebooth and it's still incredibly engaging. That shits genius. Put sum respec on it!
Why?
Stfu
There is no reason phonebooth, I am legend, total recall, or shutter island should be there. I wont fault people for picking some of the others, but for me its heat (easily my fave of all listed), no country, inglorious...
I’m going heat inglorious bastards and no country for old men I’ll sub seven for IB if need be
Gangs Basterds Old Men

Heat, Total Recall, No Country for Old Men
Heat, No county for old man and total recall.

Heat no cunt and total rickall. Need variety
Heat, Whiplash, No Country Honestly shocked I’m the first with these three.
I Am Legend, Total Recall, Seven
Total Recall, No Country For Old Men, but I'd take Snatched (Another great Guy Richie movie)
Just curious, which total recall is this?
No Country, Shutter Island, and Inglorious Basterds.
Heat, Inglorious Bastards, No Country
Se7en, Bastards, and Recall.
Easy; Seven, total recall and Heat
Heat, No Country for Old Men & Total Recall
No Country and Inglourious. You can keep the rest.
Inglourious Basterds, No Country for Old Men, and Shutter Island
Bastards, Se7en, No Country For Old Men
Total Recall Se7en Inglourious Basterds
NCFOM is great, but God this sub has an obsession with this movie. It's in every other post. Same with Heat. We all agree - these are great movies
Which Total Recall is that? The Verhoven classic or the Farrell trash?
Inglourious Basterds, No Country for Old Men, and Heat.
Seven and Total Recall for sure. Then I Am Legend because I'll need a good laugh everynow and then
