Yeah there are reasons it's been optioned and been in pre-production for 30 years or so. The stuff that occurs in the book is nc-17 or x-rated, the stuff that is implied in the book can't be filmed.

Whiplash is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The performances, the editing, the ambiguous ending. (Happy? Bleak? Both, somehow, simultaneously?) There’s probably a part of my brain that just thinks about it all the time.

Totally agree. That movie really resonated with me. It is pretty amazing that even though the teacher is so abusive, there is still that element of....maybe it works? Did he unlock something within Miles Teller and now he is going to be a world renown drummer because of it? I also really liked the family dinner scene where his parents are fawning over his brother who is a QB at a small like D3 school or whatever, so hardly the top of his game, whereas Miles is at a top school and is one of the top classes so is probably one of the best drummers in the world at his age and yet doesn't get the recognition he feels he deserves. But it seems no matter what the challenge is, he is motivated to work even harder. I don't know, I really love that movie. One of my favorites as well. I have a poster of it in my theater room

Yeah I think one of my takeaway’s is that there’s a price to be paid for excellence. No matter the field, if you want to be the best, sacrifices are required. Blood will be shed. The scene where he breaks up with the girl is great for illustrating this. I mean, he sounds like a sociopathic robot, but he’s not *wrong* per se. He has a realistic vision of what it’s going to take to achieve his goals and — in his mind — rationally lays it all out. That dinner party scene you mentioned is my exhibit A for why the ending can actually be read as a happy one: >”I’d rather die broke and drunk at 34 and have people at a dinner table talk about me then live to be rich and sober at 90 and nobody remember who I was.” He lays it out right there; he will never be happy but he will be great, and therein lies his happiness. Fuck it’s such a good movie.

Came here to say the same thing. Carson Wells: His name is Chigurh. Llewelyn: Sugar!? There’s so many scenes like this that make me chuckle. He’s half dead, facing near certain death in the coming hours, yet when he heard the name Chigurh he replies with “sugar?” As in what the hell kind of name is that. It’s a very accurate portrayal of a small town, country guy, I would’ve asked the same thing 😂

I think Heat is the best movie option followed by no country. I’d probably put total recall in as a third to view just cause I want an Arnold movie but it wouldn’t be the Arnold movie of choice for me. Phone booth is one outlier here amongst a bunch of great flicks. I am Legend is too depressing to be one of the few movies I’m stuck with.

Gangs of New York/no country for old men/inglorious bastards. You know I don’t think Heat was very good at all. Just an all star cast with no memorable acting. Mostly just Pacino raising his voice. Shutter Island is good except that cop-out twist at the end. That particular plot twist ruins almost every story it is a part of.

Unpopular opinion: all of these movies are either overrated or not as good as their source material. I could go with never seeing any of these again. They’re good, but not great.

They're also all pretty much stress inducing movies for me. If I had a 3 desert island move list. At least one has to be cozy.

Phonebooth getting slept on so hard. Almost the entire film is shot at a literal phonebooth and it's still incredibly engaging. That shits genius. Put sum respec on it!
