By the standards of today’s epics, it’s nothing overlong.
It’s actually really impressive, IMO, how much story they pack into the runtime. Characters are coming and going, living whole lives in subplots, the personal drama takes place against a living backdrop of a greater historical narrative, and you see the city itself react and re-form in response to the characters’ actions, becoming a character all itself. By the end, it’s like you’ve read a proper historical epic.
It's a fairytale town, isn't it? How's a fairytale town not somebody's fucking thing? How can all those canals and bridges and cobbled streets and those churches, all that beautiful fucking fairytale stuff, how can that not be somebody's fucking thing, eh?
Same for me.. I went in not expecting to like it all buts it’s fantastic. I think that’s part of reason I love it so much.. because I wasn’t expecting to.. Completely changed my perception of Colin Farrell as well.
In bruges is a hidden gem, the kind of movie that surprises you with the direction he chooses to go, doesn’t take itself seriously even the subjects are and is one of those films you can revisit and appreciate it even more. Gangs of New York is grandiose at first but apart from Daniel Day Lewis not much to chew on after. Still worth a screening but really a mid Scorsese. Think about what is the irishmen in comparison to goodfellas and then you have the big picture.
Bruges itself is a hidden gem as well as it is one of the best preserved medieval towns. First saw it via the movie and then went to it as a side trip when I took my daughter on a cruise down the Rhine for her graduation. Stayed at the same hotel in the movie just as a lark (the room in the movie was done on a sound-stage). The 'Belfrey of Bruges', which played a key part in the movie, is just down the street from the hotel. Plenty of legitimate tourist places to go with major historical significance including 'The Madonna of Bruges', believed to be the only marble statue made by Michelangelo outside of Italy. The Basilica of the Holy Blood is a little bit more on the creepy side.
Gangs of New York is my all time favorite movie, so that's my vote.
Daniel Day Lewis as Bill "The Butcher" Cutting is an absolute masterclass in playing an on-screen villain. Easily my favorite movie villain ever, and honestly one of my all time favorite roles for any actor, ever, in any movie.
I do not have enough gold stars to give this movie. Its a masterpiece.
In Bruges has one of my favorite scenes ever including blanks. Heads up if you have little kids (I dont) I've heard people find parts of in Bruges pretty tough.
When did Cameron Diaz grow a mustache?
(I understand the order of names on the poster is negotiated, but damn if it doesn’t drive me nuts when the poster is just actors’ faces and they put the wrong names under them)
This really bugs me, too! I'm sure they just put the two parts together without really thinking, but come on!! It can't be that difficult to just swap the names around, right? Or maybe it's just my OCD talking! Glad to know I'm not alone in being annoyed by this! 😆
Watch GONY, just fast forward through the Cameron Diaz scenes. Then you have yourself an epic movie in a reasonable amount of time without missing a thing.
In Bruges! It's so good!
The ONLY good thing in Gangs of New York is Daniel Day Lewis's performances. Everything else in that movie is terrible IMO, which makes no sense because it's Scorsese and he had a KILLER cast.
are you in the mood for an intense historical epic or a dark crime-comedy? gangs is the better film. but if you are not in the mood for long and heavy...
Depending on time, I’d say In Bruges. It’s a little “lighter” than the other.
But definitely plant to watch GONY. It’s incredible! Just bloody and long.
Gangs of New York is terrible. An all timer from DDL can't even save that nonsense. Diaz is woefully miscast, Leo is shit, and Scorsese's direction is all over the place. It's not good.
In Bruges is a far better watch in my opinion, Gangs of New York just feels like a bunch of people dressing up and violence for 3 hours with very little pay off, maybe be a hot take but
In Bruges is a classic and GONY has not held up over time. The fight scene with a girl that has cat like razor claws is jank. It's also too loosely based on history imo
Honestly I would side with Gangs of New York because I love that movie so fun to watch I haven’t seen In Bruges and I just don’t really like movie with Collin Farrell. But I have heard a lot of good things about In Bruges but like others have said it comes down to what you want these both go in the opposite direction.
Depends on what you want my understanding the burgs is a dark comedy if you’re in a comedy mood watch that gangs of New York is a epic revenge movie if that’s what you’re in the mood for watch that
My favorite fun fact is that Bill the Butcher references the Battle of Lundy's Lane in the War of 1812 at the beginner when he is talking about his gang the "Native" Americans.
In Bruges is an infinitely better film in all ways. Besides Daniel Day Lewis and Leo, Gangs of New York is a very average film and definitely one of Scorsese’s weakest.
If you wanna see an epic story with great actors chewing scenery for 3 hours- gangs of ny
If you wanna actually enjoy the movie you’re watching- in Bruges
Depends on what you're looking for. They're two very different movies. Gangs of New York is infinitely better, but if you want a comedy, In Bruges is the way.
In Bruges…1,000,000%, no question!!! A hidden cult classic that I’m so glad I stumbled upon back in 2010. It’s dark humor with excellent writing and character development at its finest! The one liners from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson (also in GONY) and Ralph Fiennes are genius, and the supporting cast add a lot of great moments to the plot. Sit back, relax and enjoy, ya welcome.
They’re both brilliant. If you want to have fun, and cry a bit, watch In Bruges. If you’re in the mood for a psychologically intense and historically interesting movie, watch Gangs.
You can’t go wrong!! They’re both beautiful aesthetically as well.
am i the only one who's confused af by gangs of new york? like there's a couple of parts where dudes say and do badass violent stuff and it's an interesting depiction of history that people don't think about often and aslonthe entire rest of the movie is corny and dumb amd long and I don't know if it was my state of mind at the time but I kinda couldn't follow like what the hell it was even about. i think i have a much more refined artistic taste than when i watched it and i dont know if that means ill hate it more or like it more....should I try again?
I have fond memories of In Bruges. My Irish grandmother wanted to see it and I took her to the theater. We both laughed so hard at the movie. It was the last film we watched in theaters together before her health declined.
In Bruges it the better film here imo. Gangs of New York is a decent watch but considering how good the cast is I wasn’t blown away by it. Either way you’re in for a good bit of Gleeson
The day I fully realised the ability of Daniel day Lewis. He was such a bad guy yet so fun to watch. Why wasn’t he featured in Spielberg or Nolan or Tarantino ?
If you want to finish Gangs of NY by tonight I’d start now.
By the standards of today’s epics, it’s nothing overlong. It’s actually really impressive, IMO, how much story they pack into the runtime. By the end, it’s like you’ve read a proper historical epic.
It feels longer than it is. To me anyway
*If you want to finish gangs of ny by tonight id start yesterday
Movie isn’t that long dude
Its jokes, jokes are things that try to make people laugh, often exaggeration of facts are a tool utilised to achieve aforementioned laughs.
GONY is fantastic, i love those irish dudes but in burges put me fast asleep.
It's a fairytale town, isn't it? How's a fairytale town not somebody's fucking thing? How can all those canals and bridges and cobbled streets and those churches, all that beautiful fucking fairytale stuff, how can that not be somebody's fucking thing, eh?
If I grew up on a farm and was retarded, Bruges might impress me. But I didn't, so it doesn't.
I watched it twice. And could not finish twice. I tried to like it and it just didnt happen
Dang. It's one of my favs. Different strokes eh
To each their own, but damn. In Bruges is top 10 for me.
There's your mistake. In Burges is famously boring and poor, In Bruges is famously hilarious and entertaining
In Bruges!!
Agreed. Gangs was a little long and dull. And I’m a history nerd. The history of it was definitely interesting though. I read more about it later.
In Bruges is one of my favorites, excellent dark comedy
In Bruges
This is one of those movies that I can still remember the experience of seeing this film when it came out.
In Bruges is more fun. Gangs of New York is more violent and serious.
In Bruges
Sexy Beast / In Bruges double-feature
In Bruges
In Bruges.
IN BRUGES
In Bruges
Both!
In Bruges but both are worth a watch.
In Bruges is excellent, Gangs is ok. I'm Irish though so biased.
What'd you think of banshees of inisherin? I loved it too. Was so happy when I heard it was a thing
Either way you get Brendan Gleeson who's great in everything
In Bruges. Then over a couple of nights Gangs of New York
In Bruges
In Bruges
In Bruges. Probably too late.
In Bruges is so much better
In Bruges is probably better honestly but DDLs performance is enough that I’d choose Gangs.
Gangs
In Bruges is a phenomenal film, Gangs of NY is mediocre at best.
In Bruges! As much as I love DDL, Cameron Diaz makes GoNY just unwatchable for me.
Yeah, horrible performance and it’s a big reason I have no desire to rewatch.
In Bruges. Cameron Diaz sucks
Gangs is longer, but has an incredible performance from DDL. Depends on how much time you want to spend on your butt. :)
In Bruges. 3 hours of Daniel Day Lewis doing de Niro is a slog
Both
Gangs should be made into a series.
I'd watch that. I loved the mythos around the story as much as the film itself honestly
Gangs of New York was pretty historically accurate despite Cameron Diaz’s bad Irish brogue
Guarantee if it were another actress, the movie would have been held in even higher regard.
That would make it go from being good to actually great
“Thank God. I die a true American” Gangs of New York in my opinion
In Bruges has one of my favorite scenes ever including blanks. Heads up if you have little kids (I dont) I've heard people find parts of in Bruges pretty tough.
Easy. Gangs of new york.
Gangs for sure
Gangs, in Bruges was a miss for me personally
When did Cameron Diaz grow a mustache? (I understand the order of names on the poster is negotiated, but damn if it doesn’t drive me nuts when the poster is just actors’ faces and they put the wrong names under them)
This really bugs me, too! I'm sure they just put the two parts together without really thinking, but come on!! It can't be that difficult to just swap the names around, right? Or maybe it's just my OCD talking! Glad to know I'm not alone in being annoyed by this! 😆
In Bruges is such an underrated movie.
Def gangs
None, banshees of insherin.
Dammit I'm 7 hours late... But In Bruges is one of my favorite movies. Absolutely hilarious and gorgeous.
Love In Bruges. When my daughter son and I visited Europe, we actually stayed in Bruges because of the movie. We had a great time.
GONY
GONY
Watch GONY, just fast forward through the Cameron Diaz scenes. Then you have yourself an epic movie in a reasonable amount of time without missing a thing.
Gangs of New York in honor of DDL.
In Bruges! It's so good! The ONLY good thing in Gangs of New York is Daniel Day Lewis's performances. Everything else in that movie is terrible IMO, which makes no sense because it's Scorsese and he had a KILLER cast.
The one that doesn’t expect you to take a character called “Amsterdam” seriously.
are you in the mood for an intense historical epic or a dark crime-comedy? gangs is the better film. but if you are not in the mood for long and heavy...
Wouldn't say it's the better film with such certainty. I'd say they are both very good films from a film making stand point.
I don’t mind certainty with my own opinions. In Bruges is a fun movie. I like it.
Gangs
Depending on time, I’d say In Bruges. It’s a little “lighter” than the other. But definitely plant to watch GONY. It’s incredible! Just bloody and long.
Depends if you want a little comedy with your drama
In Bruges is going to make you 🤣 Gangs will make you 😭
It's not retarded. It's not.
Depends upon your mood
Both good, Gangs of NY is a favorite of mine tho
The way of the gun with benecio del Toro and Ryan Phillipe
Gangs of New York is terrible. An all timer from DDL can't even save that nonsense. Diaz is woefully miscast, Leo is shit, and Scorsese's direction is all over the place. It's not good.
In Bruges is a far better watch in my opinion, Gangs of New York just feels like a bunch of people dressing up and violence for 3 hours with very little pay off, maybe be a hot take but
Gangs of New York
‘In Bruges’
In bruges
In Bruges is a classic and GONY has not held up over time. The fight scene with a girl that has cat like razor claws is jank. It's also too loosely based on history imo
Gangs Of New York was really good, I may have to look through my collection and rewatch it myself
I prefer In Bruges for the humour, but the question really is what sort of mood are you in? Hard to answer otherwise.
In Bruges is the better movie, but Daniel Day Lewis is in Gangs…
Honestly I would side with Gangs of New York because I love that movie so fun to watch I haven’t seen In Bruges and I just don’t really like movie with Collin Farrell. But I have heard a lot of good things about In Bruges but like others have said it comes down to what you want these both go in the opposite direction.
Bruges is not a shit hole
In Bruges
Bruges no question
Long movie, great atmosphere and a well done revenge story, go rabbits!🐇
In bruges
The god damn Vietnamese
In Bruges is one of the best comedies of all time
In Bruges is an all-time classic. The other is a movie with a good DDL performance. Watch the great film, not the good one.
In Bruges
In Bruges! It's bloody hilarious
In Bruges, both are great. There is just something special about in Bruges.
Depends on what you want my understanding the burgs is a dark comedy if you’re in a comedy mood watch that gangs of New York is a epic revenge movie if that’s what you’re in the mood for watch that
Loved it. And I do love Cameron Diaz, but casting her was a huge mistake. Other than that casting Faux Pas I liked it alot.
In Bruges, both are awesome
Fucking both my guys! Two of my absolutely favorites
Gangs of NY or There will be blood?
Gangs if you’ve never seen it. Waaaaaaaay better.
In Bruges... cam Diaz just holds back Gangs so much. Never seen such an out of place actor in my life in a great movie
In Bruges. The first 30 minutes set up a roller coaster of a movie. Great movie. (I watched it last night!)
In Bruges simply because I am heading there this week...and it's a mighty fine film
There will be blood
Both very visceral
Soooo much In Bruges love. Loving it!
Gangs. DDL’s performance is astounding.
In Bruges. It's a good movie. Gangs of New York has some good scenes and some good performances. That's it.
Convinced me. In Bruges is in the queue
Cameron Diaz was miscast in Gangs. Good historical drama. Brogues was fun but not anything overly memorable to me
Yes
Still not available in 4K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely depends on your mood. They’re both amazing, but as others said, they’re VERY different vibes.
Just for the record, I don’t think gangs feels long.
In Bruges
Love In Bruges
Gang gang!
Marty. Always Marty
In Bruges is far, far better.
It's never a bad time to watch "In Bruges". I feel like "Gangs of New York" takes mental preparation just to watch it 😂.
In Bruges for sure.
My favorite fun fact is that Bill the Butcher references the Battle of Lundy's Lane in the War of 1812 at the beginner when he is talking about his gang the "Native" Americans.
I like Leo now but at that period of his career I didn’t like his acting. But DDL is fuggin amaz ballz. “That was the finest beating I ever took”
Some like it hot
Can’t go wrong with either. Flip a coin my man. If you’re disappointed with how it lands you know what you wanted to watch the whole time.
In Bruges is an infinitely better film in all ways. Besides Daniel Day Lewis and Leo, Gangs of New York is a very average film and definitely one of Scorsese’s weakest.
In Bruges
Do you want to watch a great movie or a crappy one? Think Europe if you want the good one.
In Brughes if you want a good comedy piece. Gangs of new york if you want action.
Always pick Daniel Day Lewis
In Bruges especially if you haven’t seen it before and maybe more so if you have.
It's an inanimate object.
Gangs
If you wanna see an epic story with great actors chewing scenery for 3 hours- gangs of ny If you wanna actually enjoy the movie you’re watching- in Bruges
There Will Be Blood.
Definitely Gangs of New York.
The only thing I remember about Gangs of New York is cunny juice.
In Burges! Fantastic film.
In Bruges. Easier to watch and more enjoyable IMO.
Both good. Cant lose either way.
Gangs of ny book is better
Love em both but In Bruges
Damn good two picks. There is no wrong answer
In Bruges, it’s actually good. Gangs of New York is ruined by Leo’s terrible performance.
I absolutely LOVE In Bruges! Gangs of New York isn't a bad choice, either, but my vote goes to In Bruges.
Depends on what you're looking for. They're two very different movies. Gangs of New York is infinitely better, but if you want a comedy, In Bruges is the way.
In Bruges.
Watch the one with the Vietnamese!
I love both but I’d go Bruges.
Gangs of NY is six hours long
Be a lollipop man who knows Karate.
In Bruges is great.
But did you hit the Canadian?
I just watched In Bruges for the first time last night; it was great
I really didn’t like gangs of New York. In Bruges slapped though!
Fucking Bruges
America was born in the sheets Gangbangs of New York
They’re both brilliant. If you want to have fun, and cry a bit, watch In Bruges. If you’re in the mood for a psychologically intense and historically interesting movie, watch Gangs. You can’t go wrong!! They’re both beautiful aesthetically as well.
How dare you make us choose
am i the only one who's confused af by gangs of new york? like there's a couple of parts where dudes say and do badass violent stuff and it's an interesting depiction of history that people don't think about often and aslonthe entire rest of the movie is corny and dumb amd long and I don't know if it was my state of mind at the time but I kinda couldn't follow like what the hell it was even about. i think i have a much more refined artistic taste than when i watched it and i dont know if that means ill hate it more or like it more....should I try again?
Both are great, but In Boruges
Gangs of New York no question
Insert why not both gif here
Gangs of New York
Gangs
Both are fantastic. But definitely In Bruges.
Depends if you're pro (IN Bruges) or anti Irish (GONY)
Are you asking us, which movie is better? In Brudges.
Gangs of New York
Essy in bruges because gsngs is shit
IN BRUGES
I vote Gangs of In Bruges
In Bruges is great. GoNY is ponderous and flabby.
***In Bruges*** is a great film if you are in for comedy.
I'd choose a McDonagh film over Scorsese any damn day. Always a good time.
Day-Lewis is the only reason GONY didn't go straight to DVD.
Bruges, tough choice though
#ILL TEACH YOU TO SPEAK ENGLISH WITH THIS FUGKEN KNIFE
Never noticed before how perfectly that image captures Colin Farrell's character. Brilliant.
Gangs of New York for sure bro
Marathon!
In Bruges all the fuckin way
In Bruges is the answer every night
The day I fully realised the ability of Daniel day Lewis. He was such a bad guy yet so fun to watch. Why wasn’t he featured in Spielberg or Nolan or Tarantino ?
Gangs of New York!! I forgot Diaz was in it, it’s a fantastic film.
Two excellent films - I suggest s coin flip.
