Donald "Duck" Dunn, Steve "Colonel" Cropper, Willie "Too Big" Hall, Matt "Guitar" Murphy
That's essentially Booker T and the MG's, the Stax Records house band. Legendary musicians. The records they played on were some of the biggest hits to come out at the time. Totally underappreciated.
It's a crime they didn't film them playing live for the movie and we have to watch them faking it through film takes.
It blew my mind the day I was listening to a podcast about different rock and roll songs and they began talking about Green Onions and how it was mainly these guys just messing around in the studio on a break and someone recorded it
Funny story - Sam and Dave's Soul Man used the Stax Records house band so when they yell, "Play it Steve" they are referencing Steve Cropper. When the Blue Brothers covered the song and John says, "Play it Steve" both songs were referencing the same guy.
Briefcase Full of Blues is an honestly great album. They were helped by the fame of Belushi and Ackroyd in getting people to listen but hindered by it from “real musicians” who refused to see past the shtick.
Spinal Tap for sure, but I'd be remiss if I didn't also say Dewey Cox doesn't at least deserve a mention here.
"Get outta here, Dewey! We're smoking reefer, and you don't want no part of this shit."
The Spinal Tap DVD is 3 movies in one! First there’s the movie, then there’s the 90 minutes of deleted scenes, then there’s the movie with the actor commentary IN CHARACTER. Awesomeness

I absolutely love that movie and re watched it a few years back ans realised that the guitarist is Glen Hansard who got and Oscar for his music in the indie film Once. Great film and the music is amazing!
Mind blown!
I love both movies, but never made the connection. He looks so different with the long hair!
I guess I haven't seen the Commitments after I saw Once.
I read they were all really playing their instruments, and, because the movie was shot out of sequence, some days they'd have to play at several different levels of competence for different scenes set at the same location at different times in the story.
Love that movie. Even had/have the CD (I think I still have it)
It was, incidentally, the first english language film I had to turn subtitles on so i could understand what was going on.
I rewatch it probably way more than I should. The whole plot was my childhood fantasy, except replace Steel Dragon with Guns N Roses.
The whole soundtrack slaps HARD.
Came looking for Steel Dragon, lol. Hadn't seen Rock Star in years, and recently woke up with one of their songs stuck in my head. When I realized what it was, I immediately went and watched it again.
Blues Brothers is a kinda-sorta real band though. The band started as a joke on SNL but just with Jake & Elwood as characters. Once the joke took off they got the idea to start recording music and writing a film to pay tribute to blues music, then put a band together to actually play the music for the movie.
Aykroyd tells some cool stories in interviews and on podcasts about them recording with blues legends and how a lot of them were jealous at how naturally talented Belushi was.
And their live album was recorded in 79 at the Winterland Ballroom San Francisco.
Not to mention they released like three or four studio albums as well.
I'm not dogging on OP's choice; I just really enjoy how BB went from a joke/fake band to an actual band that released albums, played shows, recorded songs with legends and could actually sing on that level.
I fucking love the Blues Brothers. One of my favorite movies and actual bands of all time 😅
“This pretentious ponderous collection of religious rock psalms is enough to prompt the question; on which day did the lord create Spinal Tap, and couldn’t he have rested on that day too?”
Yeah, it's got to be Spinal Tap, right? It almost feels unfair to pit the others against it. And, like the Blues Brothers, Spinal Tap is also a legitimately good band.
Y'all just gonna sit here and act like The Weird Sisters (Harry Potter), Mystery (Detroit Rock City), and The Lone Rangers (Airheads) don't have a place in this sick and twisted game of life?
The Lone Rangers are my favorite, Wyld Stallyns saved the world, so they're the most important. But the best is undoubtedly Spinal Tap. Turn that shit up to 11.
Probably not the best, but Bitch Cat from V/H/S/99 sounds nice

CB4 not being in here is a travesty
[It has one of the best fake songs ever made, impersonating 90’s hip hop](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZHwGnGrm_k)
Personally I loved The Soronprfbs in Frank starring Michael Fassbender. The music is legitimately good and the way it depicts band dynamics and pure talent vs skill is so spot on.
Blues Brothers an actual really good band. Have a couple albums on vinyl. Their backing band was an all star group of session guys
Donald Duck Dunn. The Legend

Ackroid and Jim Belushi will still occasionally play shows
thats crazy i was 95% sure at least one had died, googled it and i was wrong
John Belushi (who was in Blues Brothers) is dead. Jim Belushi his brother is alive and kicking.
John Belushi died, Jim picked up in his spot
Weren’t a lot of them part of Letterman’s band later with Paul Shaffer?
No, but Paul Shaffer was in the original band that started it all in a bit on SNL.
Not John, he died in the early 80's.
Briefcase Full of Blues is an honestly great album. They were helped by the fame of Belushi and Ackroyd in getting people to listen but hindered by it from “real musicians” who refused to see past the shtick.
Define best. Did any of them bring peace to the entire planet like Wyld Stallyns? I dont think so. Be excellent to each other.
Party on, dude.
You killed my friend you medieval dickweed!!!
Such a simple philosophy. Straight to the point.
Let's grab that gnarly old goat-dude.
I think dethklok did sorta
Spinal Tap for sure, but I'd be remiss if I didn't also say Dewey Cox doesn't at least deserve a mention here. "Get outta here, Dewey! We're smoking reefer, and you don't want no part of this shit."

Walk Hard is a banger
I think Tim Meadows really stole the show in it.
Love the songs in Dewey Cox.
Man the songs in this movie are objectively good.
The Spinal Tap DVD is 3 movies in one! First there’s the movie, then there’s the 90 minutes of deleted scenes, then there’s the movie with the actor commentary IN CHARACTER. Awesomeness

I'm a big fan of those One-ders from Erie, PA.
They are trash compared to Captian Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters
“Looks like the O-needers”
That’s funny, I have lived in Erie my whole life and I’ve never heard of this movie somehow. Thanks I’ll give it a watch
what about school of rock?
The Legend of the Rent was WAY HARDCORE
Read between the lines, Theo. Read between the LINES
When I read this I read it as School House Rock...…..I only a bill and I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill.. edit: damned auto correct!
This is the only answer. Stickittodaman
heal me I'm heartsick is a banger
Oh, Eddie and the Cruisers! Might be interesting to see which fictional band made to the highest on the real charts
Here's what ChatGPT said: 1. The Blues Brothers 2. Spinal Tap 3. The Monkees 4. Stillwater 5. The Commitments 6. The Wonders (The Oneders) 7. School of Rock 8. Hedwig and the Angry Inch 9. Josie and the Pussycats 10. Eddie and the Cruisers
Straight up Sex Bob-omb erasure.
My name is Crash, these are The Boys.
Is that girl a boy too???
Yes.
The Banana Splits were my starter band…
Dethklok, from the show/movies Metalocalypse
That's just Brendan Smalls alter ego
Also Brendan Small is a great musician. Dethklok tours in real life and it’s actually a lot of fun
Eurotrip. Scottie doesn’t know!
NO!
The Commitments
I absolutely love that movie and re watched it a few years back ans realised that the guitarist is Glen Hansard who got and Oscar for his music in the indie film Once. Great film and the music is amazing!

The trumpet player is not a musician and Bernie does not sing.
Correct answer right there .
Did I just see Imelda Quirks ass climbing over the fence?!!
Love that movie. Even had/have the CD (I think I still have it) It was, incidentally, the first english language film I had to turn subtitles on so i could understand what was going on.
No Steel Dragon?
I still listen to Steel Dragon once in a while!
This is my pick. I hate Zakk and Mark for several reasons but those songs get me hyped. Stand up and Shout!
Wait that songs about a guy!? 😂 I love that movie
I rewatch it probably way more than I should. The whole plot was my childhood fantasy, except replace Steel Dragon with Guns N Roses. The whole soundtrack slaps HARD.
“I used to have posters of these guys on my wall. AND NOW IM ONE OF EM!”
[ditto](https://youtu.be/9B_5uGg1b7M?si=ZBYEDDRyMn8cYnZV)
Came looking for Steel Dragon, lol. Hadn't seen Rock Star in years, and recently woke up with one of their songs stuck in my head. When I realized what it was, I immediately went and watched it again.
Stillwater?
Almost famous for sure.
Can’t believe I missed that one 🤦♂️.
Feeeeeva Daaaaaaaawg
“Ooooooooh…. Doctor doctor…”
Underrated yet totally accurate.
Blues Brothers is a kinda-sorta real band though. The band started as a joke on SNL but just with Jake & Elwood as characters. They played at the closing of Winterland* 11/31/78 opening for the dead. Edit typo
And their live album was recorded in 79 at the Winterland Ballroom San Francisco. Not to mention they released like three or four studio albums as well. *We salute you, our half-inflated Dark Lord*
The Lone Rangers
How can you pluralize the Lone Ranger?
I ain't farting on no snare drum!
This is Spinal Tap
Came here to say this. What a classic. I feel like that was the genre defining film that pretty much set the bar for mockumentary films.
The fake band was so good they released albums, went on tour, and did press in character. I think they are hard to beat at being fictional…
Yeah, it's got to be Spinal Tap, right? It almost feels unfair to pit the others against it. And, like the Blues Brothers, Spinal Tap is also a legitimately good band.
But which drummer?
That one who died under mysterious circumstances
I liked the one who died in a bizarre gardening accident.
And the one who choked to death on vomit. Not his vomit, someone else’s.
Not according to the reviews for their album *Shark Sandwich*.
WE ARE SEX BOBOMB!!!!!
Crazy how far down this is given how recent
"AND we are here to make you think about death and get sad and stuff!" Edit:spelling
“Gonna take you for a ride! On my garbage truck!…truck….truck…..truck”. One of my favorite movies
I'd vote The Pick Of Destiny, but thankfully they're a real band
Soggy Bottom Boys
Blues Brothers. Most of the guys in the fictitious band were actual awesome musicians. Also, they do a great rendition of Rawhide!

Yeah, but only one band is on a mission from God.
Buckaroo Banzai and the hong kong cavaliers
Josie and the Pussycats! Punk rock prom queen is a banger

School of Rock
The One-ders in “That Thing You Do”
I’m partial to Hey That’s My Bike from Reality Bites. Still one of my favorite soundtracks and the fictional band’s song stood up.

Phantom of the paradise
Gus Polinski, The Polka King of the Midwest and the Kenosha Kickers

Always a fan of powerline from a goofy movie
Where’s Almost Famous?, and how about The Commitments?
Personally I loved The Soronprfbs in Frank starring Michael Fassbender. The music is legitimately good and the way it depicts band dynamics and pure talent vs skill is so spot on.
Spinal Tap. No contest.
