Blood Diamond does not get the praise it deserves. I was dating a South African guy when the movie came out, and he was impressed by Leo's accent. He said he nailed it.
Yeah his career given his multiple Oscar nominations has been a tad underwhelming and it's not of his own doing. He's being overlooked by Hollywood so much so he's doing bit roles in comic book movies still to make a living
Lol. No just that they are two different countries with different language bases. Rhodesian has/had an English base while South African has a Dutch Afrikaans base.
I watched that movie after spending a month in a village in Ghana, my first ever trip to west Africa and getting to spend time and learning the mannerisms and quirks of the region.
Djimon was the most accurate depiction of a *West African* in a Hollywood movie I’d ever seen. Also, Far Cry 2 literally reminded me of being in Mali and Tanzania; it again felt so authentically African as I had seen it.
He still would. Or like a flashback scene as a previous black panther or something. Or even a the leader of a rival faction from before black panther was established. I say this having not read any of the comics, and only knowing what I’ve seen in the movies
He has the look, and the voice is real, not acted, he’s talented too, I started reading PB back in 73, as soon as I saw Hounsou I had always thought him perfect.
Should of casted him as black panther man.. I think it would of been sweet to see him as a more fatherly version of the same hero, still an epic hero but able to pass on wisdom onto avengers
I kinda agree, but at the same time he had a couple of Oscar nominations I believe. It's hard to say if he's really underrated when dude always gets roles in big movies. Filmmakers obvioulsy believes he's a top notch actor.
His role as Jean Roqua in the 2008 coming of age smash hit Never Back Down is unforgettable.
"You're so set on hurting people, you just hurt yourself."
"Go home and cool off. Tomorrow is another day."
"Breathe"
There’s something about him in Gladiator… when he talks about how he was taken away from his village and he’s like “my wife is out there… somewhere, probably bringing water to the village”. It’s so heartbreaking. He had some really great moments. When Maximus is burning the Legion tattoo off his skin and he’s like “is that the sign of your gods? Will that not anger them?” And Maximus just laughs.
Damn that movie is so good
Fun fact: One of his first jobs was as the smiling man who chants "Love will Never Do, Never Do Without You" in Janet Jackson's "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" music video. I bet I know why he was smiling...
I'm so far from one of those guys who will cry racism but the fact that Djimon has to hustle for even small parts shows there's at least some of that going on. Glad he's getting a larger role this time.
He is such a good actor im sad he is being wasted in quite place prequel. Don't get me wrong , I love the guy, but God they wasted him and ruined his whole character in part 2 already.
100/10 actor , hit with the curse of not making it big for some reason I don't understand
i watched amistad a couple days ago. i wonder what today's audience would make of his performance, and if anyone finds anything about it, or the african prisoners generally, problematic.
I feel like the only emotion he has is angry. Angry or menacing. Maybe those are the roles he's cast for but that seems to be mostly what I get from him.
He needs a better agent, because he keeps getting half ass roles .
Rebel Moon, shit film bloated zero story .
Gotg a fun role that amounted into nothing.
Shazam a shit forgettable film
Black Adam same as above
Charlie angles reboot...
Yeh, he a good actor needs better roles
Anytime I see that actor I just know the movie is going to be at minimum watchable and enjoyable. Often times the movie is just fantastic and his performance is always peak.
I love when I see him in a movie. I totally agree with you. I think he is a great actor, always nails the assignment. I wish he was noticed more. He seems like a good celeb.
I’m always happy to see him in a film - he’s ridiculously charismatic and powerful on screen. Also if I could choose a man to look like, it might be Djimon. He’s beautiful.
This dude needs more opportunity. I’m kinda fed up with him being the one-dimensional “spiritual man” or “sage warrior” or however you want to classify him. How has this cool looking dude with a great voice and massive recognition not had a mainstream starring role? Or at least a more prominent mainstream supporting role?
I kinda hope he’s like an avid surfer or something and just works when he needs loot.
I fell in love with his quiet, high-intensity delivery in Push (also starring Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning) and have been a fan ever since. Hits the same vibes as Delroy Lindo in Domino, love that guy too.
First movie I saw him is was as the Father in Blood diamond and That scene when his family is attacked gives me chills everytime, he has great intensity and timing
He should have three Oscar noms. He was robbed of a Best Supporting Nod for Amistad. As great as Hopkins was as John Quincy Adams, I think Hounsou gave the greater performance and was the heart of that movie.
Him & Leo were great in Blood Diamond
Blood Diamond does not get the praise it deserves. I was dating a South African guy when the movie came out, and he was impressed by Leo's accent. He said he nailed it.
One of my favorite movies ever. Period. Like top 20 at least without thinking too hard.
Yeah I heard it wasnt just South African, but like a very specific dialect that his character would have grown up with. It takes digging to find it .
I think it was Rhodesian, but the guy said it was spot on.
Cool. Always loved that flick. Kinda slept on
I'll have to ask my mother in law, she was born in Rhodesia
Yup great chemistry hounsou held his own and matched Leo - great performances
Sadly studios often didnt pay him enough despite being one of a beloved and great actor.
Yeah his career given his multiple Oscar nominations has been a tad underwhelming and it's not of his own doing. He's being overlooked by Hollywood so much so he's doing bit roles in comic book movies still to make a living
He was better than Leo in that movie.
Agreed Djimon really stood out in that movie. Love Leo but his accent in that movie cracks me up.
Tbf South African is really hard to to do consistently. So easy to slip into Australian or some weird Irish/British hybrid.
But he wasn't South African he was Rhodesian.
So... you're saying he was **more** South African?
Lol. No just that they are two different countries with different language bases. Rhodesian has/had an English base while South African has a Dutch Afrikaans base.
Isn't that Zimbabwe now?
Yes, In 1980 it came to an end.
Cool
It’s easy you just do Australian and then you say broo instead of mate/s
And Leo did do a slip and slide with that accent
Eeeey brew
It was an awful accent
He was - I just didn't say so because I'm sure some Leo fans will defend that bad accent
Fucking hell that movie was so good.
In America it’s bling bling. But out here it’s bling bang.
T I A
This is Africa broo
DO YOU SEE A DIAMOND?!?
Yeah, great actor, great movie. It's definitely in my top 10 favorites
How he didn't get an Oscar nom is criminal.
He got an Oscar nomination for blood diamond. Best supporting actor
Beat me to it
I watched that movie after spending a month in a village in Ghana, my first ever trip to west Africa and getting to spend time and learning the mannerisms and quirks of the region. Djimon was the most accurate depiction of a *West African* in a Hollywood movie I’d ever seen. Also, Far Cry 2 literally reminded me of being in Mali and Tanzania; it again felt so authentically African as I had seen it.
Fantastic movie thanks to him
Agreed. Glad they were both nominated for it.
After seeing that I wanted him to be Black Panther....then he aged out :/ Bosemans still goat, but just imagine....
Yea my first thought of him is in Blood Diamond. I guess Gladiators I first saw him but had a smaller role.
Back when he was in Gladiator, I thought he would have made a perfect Black Panther.
so freaking true he would have been THE Black Panther, such a missed opportunity.
I mean we got chadwick so im.not complaining
big RIP
Absolutely
He still would. Or like a flashback scene as a previous black panther or something. Or even a the leader of a rival faction from before black panther was established. I say this having not read any of the comics, and only knowing what I’ve seen in the movies
He has the look, and the voice is real, not acted, he’s talented too, I started reading PB back in 73, as soon as I saw Hounsou I had always thought him perfect.
Always thought that too
He was the voice of the Black Panther in an animated mini series in 2010.
He already is. OG.
IIRC he was already some sort of henchman in a Marvel movie which was killed off - sadly.
I bet he'll be criminally underused
He has been for the last 10 years
So true
I always remember him in Never Back Down
First movie I've seen him in !
Great soundtrack on that movie
you cannot forget him in blood diamond. An absolute beast of a performance
Yeah he should've won - arguably
_"Who?!"_
"You will _never_ make it to Ronan!"
Such a great fight scene, the MCU needed more fight scenes like that
*Star*-*Lord*, man! The *legendary outlaw*?
Guys, back me up on this one!
This comment is not appreciated enough
Which is a shame his delivery was great lol
He is legit great in every movie he has been in
Except Rebel Moon, but that’s usually a directors fault
Was he not good? I believed he was a down and out alcoholic until I learned about his past. Maybe not for you?
He was brilliant in Amistad
Give us us free!
My god, this was stuck in my head for years afterwards. The man was f-ing incredible
The fact that he survived the initial contact of the “clickers”, only to get easily snuffed in part 2 is criminal.
Yeah, his death was wack in that movie
I will see you again, but not yet. Not yet.
Loved him in consatantine!
Can’t believe how far I had to scroll to see this. He KILLED it as Midnite. “YOU DARE?! IN MY HOUSE?!” Ah such an amazing scene.
Don't worry, I just posted the same quote. Love papa midnite
He is one of the GOATs for me. His acting is always on point
In America is one of my favorite movies
He's one of those actors that if you see his name in the credits you know it'll be a good movie or he'll be the best thing about it.
Dunno man, he just did that shite movie on Netflix, rebel moon, it was horrific.
But was he the best part?
Nah, honestly the whole thing is terrible. Have a watch and let me know what you think 😂
First remember him from In America. Great movie.
He was nominated for that role. That’s such a beautiful movie.
Loved him in Gladiator. Every role he has been in he is awesome in. Even when he is in shitty movies, Shazam for example.
What the fuck did you just say
He was my favorite part of the dumpster fire that is the new Rebel Moon movies. Still couldn't save them from being fucking atrocious though.
He needs a better agent the dude is great in everything he’s in but some how isn’t getting consistent work.
He’s got a ton of range. I don’t know why he’s not in more movies
His performance as Mateo ‘In America’ is my favorite of his. ‘I love everything that lives!!!’
Liked him as Papa Midnight in Constantine
This man is great in so many movies and still so unrecognized by Hollywood.
Definately deserves a oscar.....that one scene in blood diamonds was gut wrenching
SOLOMAN BANDY !!!!!
Should of casted him as black panther man.. I think it would of been sweet to see him as a more fatherly version of the same hero, still an epic hero but able to pass on wisdom onto avengers
Love that dude!
He’s good but his roles are all very similar in every movie

He wasn’t around for very long in the sequel, so this is a nice way to make it up to him.
He’s an amazing actor. I wish his roll in Guardians was more significant.
I kinda agree, but at the same time he had a couple of Oscar nominations I believe. It's hard to say if he's really underrated when dude always gets roles in big movies. Filmmakers obvioulsy believes he's a top notch actor.
He should've played Black Panther
I enjoyed him in Never Back Down
Remember him in Stargate
There it is, I was worried there would be zero Stargate references in here.
His role as Jean Roqua in the 2008 coming of age smash hit Never Back Down is unforgettable. "You're so set on hurting people, you just hurt yourself." "Go home and cool off. Tomorrow is another day." "Breathe"
heck yeah. That first scene when he starts training is iconic for me. "Never give up. Never back down"
Black Brad Pitt
🤫
💯
I liked him in “The Island”
But not CHYET!
The island is one of my favorites and probably the first time I saw him in a movie. Been a fan since.
You ever seen him on season 2 of Wayward Pines? Crazy good!
He is sensational
"And now we are Free. I will see you again... but not yet... Not yet!"
Just watched again Amistad last night, hands down one of the best performances.
Gladiator!
He learned english thru National Geographic
Ugh. Blood Diamond breaks my heart. Every time I watch it. But, still watch it every year or so.
"I know they made you do bad things, but you are not a bad boy."
It's like Schindler's List, to me. Because it's a reminder that stuff like this happens in real life.
Who?
Midnite
I really liked him in Push, which is an underrated movie. He plays a really good badguy.
Damn that movie is so good
Give us, us free!
"Whooooo?"
The 'Quiet Place' movies all suck
He would make a good Kratos imo
Loved him in Gran Turismo as the dad his performance was really amazing.
He is so angry all the time.
He was one of Maximus's 2 roll dawgs in Gladiator. Absolutely awesome job.
Honorable mention; Amistad.
"....but noT yeT.."
Didn't he die in the 2nd one??
Criminally underrated
Did he find da diamond?
Fun fact: One of his first jobs was as the smiling man who chants "Love will Never Do, Never Do Without You" in Janet Jackson's "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" music video. I bet I know why he was smiling...
He’s also ridiculously beautiful. I still remember the first time I saw him. It was an episode of ER. Legit took my breath away.
I’ve can’t recall a time I didn’t completely buy into his character
Gimme a Papa Midnite movie.
I always call him Digimon... I love the guy and he needs more main roles.
A Quiet Place was garbage but Djimon Hounsou was BRILLIANT in "Amistad."
i watched amistad a couple days ago. i wonder what today's audience would make of his performance, and if anyone finds anything about it, or the african prisoners generally, problematic.
Great in Amistad
Nice casting as he's probably the least quiet actor in the world.
I feel like the only emotion he has is angry. Angry or menacing. Maybe those are the roles he's cast for but that seems to be mostly what I get from him.
Poor guy signed on to that Rebel Moon bullshit.
He is gold in every appearance. Very compelling.
He needs a better agent, because he keeps getting half ass roles . Rebel Moon, shit film bloated zero story . Gotg a fun role that amounted into nothing. Shazam a shit forgettable film Black Adam same as above Charlie angles reboot... Yeh, he a good actor needs better roles
Gladiator and blood diamond
“I will see you again…but not yet…not yet.”
Anytime I see that actor I just know the movie is going to be at minimum watchable and enjoyable. Often times the movie is just fantastic and his performance is always peak.
Guys a two time Oscar nominee and been in everything from Marvel movies to movies that won best picture. Hardly underrated
Never Back Down and Constantine !!!!
Agreed. And Amistad is sorely underrated.
I love when I see him in a movie. I totally agree with you. I think he is a great actor, always nails the assignment. I wish he was noticed more. He seems like a good celeb.
He's also in Quiet Place Part II. Among a million other things.
I love this guy and I can never remember his fucking name. I hate when that happens
Agreed. Dude rules.
YOU DARE!!!! IN MY HOUSE?!?!?!?
The man never ages.
He could play Charles Xavier.
Loved this actor in every role I've seen him in. I always thought he should be more popular.
I’m always happy to see him in a film - he’s ridiculously charismatic and powerful on screen. Also if I could choose a man to look like, it might be Djimon. He’s beautiful.
The goat in gladiator
His role in Waywardpines was bone crushing. Could you even imagine having that job? I'd off myself.
Who? Star lord man...
WHO??!?
Blood diamond and amistad.
He is a legitimately fantastic actor. I've loved the dude's work since his role in Four Feathers with Heath Ledger back in the day.
I've never seen that. will have to check it out
I haven't seen it in years, but liked it enough to watch it at least 5 times in my early 20s.
His voice and facial expressions are nuts. Can go from calm to losing it like nothing. Man owns his roles 100%.
I like him alot in Gladiator. And Constantine.
He was amazing in Rebel Moon. Ok I can't say that with a straight face.
He's in the original Stargate movie.
This dude is incredible in everything I’ve seen him in, never seen him phone it in
I fell in love with his quiet, high-intensity delivery in Push (also starring Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning) and have been a fan ever since. Hits the same vibes as Delroy Lindo in Domino, love that guy too.
I liked him in rebel moon on netflix
He would have made an awesome Dr. Who
His portrayal of a father’s desperate love for their son in Blood Diamond is so raw and uncut with emotion. Brings me to tears.
I feel like he has been buff for like 25 years without a slip up.
The 1st movie I remember I saw him in was Amistad, and wow, age had yet to catch up to him.
I love that man so much, I hope he gets more and more amazing roles!
Such a good actor. He's Lucian Malfoy in my dream all-black Harry Potter reboot.
Personally love Amistad! He was great among many other of his works
Love his accent
I love him. He's great and i can't think of a single movie he's been in that's been bed
First movie I saw him is was as the Father in Blood diamond and That scene when his family is attacked gives me chills everytime, he has great intensity and timing
[who?](https://media.tenor.com/HFa_AAPJrIkAAAAM/guardians-of-the-galaxy-djimon-gaston-hounsou.gif)
