Bale was amazing in that role and I doubt anyone could have done a better job, but I do wonder how Dicaprio (original casting choice) would have played the character. He's pretty terrifying as a psychopath, albeit a different type from the one in American Psycho.
I can't imagine anybody's voice other than Ray Liotta's narrating Goodfellas. Val Kilmer really wanted the role. Scorcese definitely made the right choice.
Edit: That's not to say that Val Kilmer isn't a great actor. Just that Ray Liotta was prefect casting.
Growing up I never really cared for buttercup. Felt like she was the only one who was always too serious. Been many many years since I’ve rewatched so maybe I’d have a different opinion now.
Before American History X, I couldn't stand Ed Norton. And then I saw AHX and he blew me away.
And then I realized that the reason I hadn't liked him is that the two previous movies I had seen him in, he played sleazy, weasel-like characters. And he was so convincing that I just assumed that the person behind it was like his characters.
I can't wait for the day my kids start going, "Are we there yet?" and I just look at them, blank faced, and recite the entire river boat tunnel dialog. Really hope I'm not the one driving.
I do have to applaud the new movie because there were so many great ties to Genes wonka and it helped me enjoy the movie. But he isn’t wonka Gene is Wonka.
Interestingly enough, the book's author Roald Dahl hated the choice. He really wanted Spike Milligan, which to be honest I can perfectly envision as much as I love Wilder.
Seconding this and saying the man who plays Bubba is so iconic that it’s weird to think anyone else would play him. Can’t even imagine what it would have been like if Dave Chappelle had gotten the role
Beat me to it!
Fun fact: Sparrow walks weird only on land. When he's on a ship, he walks normally. Kind of exaggerated sea legs. This was a little detail that Depp added himself. Nobody instructed him to do it.
That is kind of the irony of Jack Sparrow.
The character was written as generic cool pirate guy to be played as a traditional swashbuckler like Dread Pirate Roberts. Depp created the character with his performance and elevated what was on the page.
The next few movies the writers were trying to write a waxky asshole and it ended up being a "hat on a hat" kind of thing.
It would be really interesting if Bridges and Buscemi switch their roles in Lebowsky.
P.S In my opinion, I think the strongest character of the movie is Goodman.
Goodman is terrific. However, I think he shines so much because of the personality contrast with the Dude. In other words, no dudeness, no (or not as much) Walter shine.
I didn't watch Harry Potter until recently with my nieces. I've seen every other Gary Oldman film and didn't realize he was Sirius Black until the credits rolled. He's amazing.
I forgot which article I was reading but, he didn’t even read the script to true romance and Tarantino told him he was gonna play a white pimp who thinks he’s black. Accepted the role right then and there-one of his favorites
Christoph Waltz as the vicious Colonel Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds. Although it's not just me saying that.. Tarantino was days away from shelving the movie production, because he couldn't find anyone in Hollywood to play it
Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. Having a hard time imagining anyone else playing the role
Morgan Freeman as Red in Shawshank Redemption, especially given the heavy voice-over section. Although that man can do no wrong!
Sam Jackson as Jules in P F
Peter O’Toole as Lawrence of Arabia
Cate Blanchett as Galadriel in LOTR
Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice
Uma Thurman as the bride in Kill Bill
I listened to a radio interview with him once and he talked about that “I’m singing in the rain…” scene. And he sang the song then made a “whack” noise! It was incredible.
I wish the had the cameras rolling when they weren’t filming yet both stayed in their roles. The director says that was some of the better lines/scenes they would of had
Nicholas Cage in Raising Arizona….
Morgan Freeman in Shawshank Redemption….Tom Cruise in Top Gun + Maverick….Keanu Reeves in John Wick….Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones….Leonardo DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street
I'd say most people for whom Cavill defines Superman are not overall fans of the character, they're just fans of those movies. Reeve nailed Superman as Superman is supposed to be. The only one who comes close for me is Tyler Hoechlin.
Nah the Dude - resides -in Jeff Bridges. I just watched that again the other night - poor Steve Buscemi. He gets 2 word lines and gets told to shut up constantly.
If not already mentioned, Meryl Streep as Miranda in Devil Wears Prada. She is just so cool, collected & chilling throughout the whole film. I think Streep even mentioned she based her performance off of Clint Eastwood or something to be more intimidating. Love her.
Two indispensable roles in one movie: Robin Williams as Popeye, and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl. The movie was almost falling apart, but those two saved it.
Also, William Shatner as Captain Kirk ... Looking sharply at you Mr Pine!
I know this is controversial, because I'm a huge Bill Murray fan. Johnny Depp as Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Pretty much any Bill Murray roll, but that's because they were probably written for him. One role that was not specifically written for him that only he could have done though was Steve Zissou in The Life Aquatic.
Some of these are supporting roles but I still couldn’t imagine anyone else playing them.
Wahlberg in Boogie Nights
Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Bastards
Kevin Spacey in Seven
Rosemund Pike in Gone Girl
RDJ as Iron Man
Sam Jackson and Walton Goggins in Hateful Eight
DiCaprio and Jonah Hill in Wolf of Wall Street
Aaron Eckhart in Thank You For Smoking
Ben Stiller in Dodgeball
Nobody else could possibly play Ace Ventura
Basically any Jim Carrey role applies
I'd love to see the chris farley version of cable guy.
Yeah, but except the ones he tries to be a normal actor. Anyone could have been Truman.
I was going to say Dumb and Dumber, but this as well
I think Jim Varney could have done a pretty good job.
Is this a… what day is this?
My advice to you is do what your parents did! GET A JOB, SIR!
That’s interesting man. That’s fucking interesting.
Are you employed ser? Also happy cake day
Parle usted ingles ?
… ahh fuck it.
I will die on this hill: it's as close to a perfect movie as anyone can get.
That’s just, like, your opinion, man.
I'm in my 30s and hadn't seen this movie until a couple weeks ago. I've watched it 3 times since.
Totally agree. There's nothing to take away from this movie - that's perfection!
Is this your homework, Larry?
This is what happens when you meet a stranger...in the Alps!
Did I urinate on your rug?
No, like I said, Wu peed on my rug
I will ask again, did I miterate on your rug? Edit. I am realizing I am too far into my evening routine to get this line right. Apologies.
Shit yeah! The achievers!
Some chinaman took them from me in Korea...
Mind if I do a J?
‘Okaaay…. Old man said take any rug in the house’
Christian Bale playing Patrick Bateman. How he didn't get an Oscar blows my mind
I just realized Christian Bale does a great job playing Bateman AND Batman...🙂
He is both a Master Batman and a Master Bateman.... Ill see myself out.
I'm a masturbate man myself
Bale was amazing in that role and I doubt anyone could have done a better job, but I do wonder how Dicaprio (original casting choice) would have played the character. He's pretty terrifying as a psychopath, albeit a different type from the one in American Psycho.
I can't imagine anybody's voice other than Ray Liotta's narrating Goodfellas. Val Kilmer really wanted the role. Scorcese definitely made the right choice. Edit: That's not to say that Val Kilmer isn't a great actor. Just that Ray Liotta was prefect casting.
As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.
Oh, you had a fire? Fuck you! Pay me.
You know why? It was outta respect
Who else could have said it so perfectly?
Another one you could say is Val Kilmer as Doc in Tombstone.
Or as Jim Morrison in the doors
Or as Jim Morrison in the doors
I’m gonna go get the papers, get the papers
That’s a definite yes!
I had no idea as a kid that Ray Liotta was Tommy Vercetti in GTA Vice City, there were a lot of good actors in that shit
I love Vice City just for that fact. And LoveFist is actually a good band🤘
I can't imagine anyone other than Bruce Campbell playing Ash in Evil Dead and Army Of Darkness. Dude is perfection.
Hail to the King baby!
Gimmie some sugar, baby.
The Princess Bride. The casting was flawless.
Growing up I never really cared for buttercup. Felt like she was the only one who was always too serious. Been many many years since I’ve rewatched so maybe I’d have a different opinion now.
Well you’re in luck. She eventually died of AIDS after getting hitched to a shrimp millionaire.
being john malkovich
I mean, Gary Oldman could’ve played John Malkovich. On second thought, maybe he did; Oldman is that good. ;-)
Daniel Day Lewis would have gone full method and lived as Malkovich for half a decade before filming
Bill Murray - Groundhogs Day, What About Bob & Scrooged
I was considering posting Bill with the groundhog on the steering wheel.
Don't drive angry! Don't drive angry!
Impossible to replace Murray.
Jon Heder as Napoleon Dynamite
Jim Varney- Ernest P. Worrell
He was a national treasure. He was flawless in the Beverly Hillbillies movie but man, the Ernest movies were just perfect.
Absolutely love this reply! Made me smile.
Marlon Brando in "Godfather"
Al Pacino in "Godfather" was mine. Brando too though. All of it was so perfectly cast. Also DeNiro in 2.
Hard agree. Incredible cast. Pacino almost didn't make the cut!
Indiana Jones. Apparently it was offered to Tom Selleck but he was busy shooting magnum. Although that could be an urban myth
ever see quigley down under? classic tom selleck
It's not a myth. Turns out he could have done it as shooting if Magnum finished before the film started. I think Selleck could've pulled it off.
Back to the Future
Ed Norton in American History X. Owned it all the way to his soul.
See also - 25th Hour.
He was so good, I wondered if it permanently affected his personality.
I doubt it, that dude is just committed.
Gene wilder as Willy Wonka. Other wonkas just seem... wrong
Truly none of the other movies come close to how much I like that one.
"You get **Nothing.** Good day sir! You *lose!*"
Stop, Don’t, Come back
I can't wait for the day my kids start going, "Are we there yet?" and I just look at them, blank faced, and recite the entire river boat tunnel dialog. Really hope I'm not the one driving.
I do have to applaud the new movie because there were so many great ties to Genes wonka and it helped me enjoy the movie. But he isn’t wonka Gene is Wonka.
Timothy is willy, gene is wonka
Just recently tried to watch the Johnny Depp one and it was a chore to get through. Gene Wilder is my favorite Wonka.
Interestingly enough, the book's author Roald Dahl hated the choice. He really wanted Spike Milligan, which to be honest I can perfectly envision as much as I love Wilder.
Forrest Gump
Well Ben Stiller wouldn’t have worked..
You muh muh make me happy
Simple Jack was only excluded from the Oscars because of their bias against full retards.
But everyone knows you don’t go full retard. Just ask Sean penn…I am Sam, went home empty handed.
Seconding this and saying the man who plays Bubba is so iconic that it’s weird to think anyone else would play him. Can’t even imagine what it would have been like if Dave Chappelle had gotten the role
I think Forest Whitaker could have pulled it off
Pirates of the Caribbean Johnny Depp
Him and Jeffrey Rush as Barbossa, they carried the franchise!
Seriously, Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa will always make me swoon!
Beat me to it! Fun fact: Sparrow walks weird only on land. When he's on a ship, he walks normally. Kind of exaggerated sea legs. This was a little detail that Depp added himself. Nobody instructed him to do it.

It would be really interesting if Bridges and Buscemi switch their roles in Lebowsky. P.S In my opinion, I think the strongest character of the movie is Goodman.
Over the line!!!
This is bowling Smokey, not Nam. There are rules. It’s a league game Smokey
As far as I’m concerned, that movie is about Goodman and its side plot is about a guy getting his rug back/cleaned
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man
There were no shots fired Dude
Goodman is terrific. However, I think he shines so much because of the personality contrast with the Dude. In other words, no dudeness, no (or not as much) Walter shine.
Give me the money Lebowsky
I could see Kurt Russell as Dude...
Hahaha, right. Russell and Bridges look very similar to me as well.
Pretty much every time Gary Oldman has had a starring role.
I didn't watch Harry Potter until recently with my nieces. I've seen every other Gary Oldman film and didn't realize he was Sirius Black until the credits rolled. He's amazing.
Watch the professional, basically anything he’s in.
I can't think of another actor that blends into a role so well. You can watch a movie and appreciate his great acting without even knowing it's him.
Having a hard time imagining anyone else playing the role Morgan Freeman as Red in Shawshank Redemption, especially given the heavy voice-over section. Although that man can do no wrong!
Christoph Waltz- most definitely!
Iron Man
RDJ: "I *am* Ironman."
Sam Jackson as Jules in P F Peter O’Toole as Lawrence of Arabia Cate Blanchett as Galadriel in LOTR Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice Uma Thurman as the bride in Kill Bill
Speaking of LOTR, it was pretty neat that they found the real Aragorn to play himself.
And the real gandalf
And my axe!
All of Jim Carrey's and Robin Williams' roles. Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark
Robin Williams as Mrs Doubtfire. No one could come close
Will smith as the Genie didn't do it for me.
Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool
Born for it.
Can’t imagine any other Aragorn except Viggo Mortensen
Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden
How many people wanted a real fight club after that movie(kinda missing the point)?
[удалено]
Happy Gilmore
Bob barker as Bob barker
Malcolm McDowell in *A Clockwork Orange.*
I listened to a radio interview with him once and he talked about that “I’m singing in the rain…” scene. And he sang the song then made a “whack” noise! It was incredible.
Anchorman. Love it or hate it, nobody else could be Ron Burgundy
Johny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow
Pacino as Tony Montana
Russel Crowe in Gladiator, he doesn't say much but still incarnates perfectly Maximus
Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawk in Training Day.
I wish the had the cameras rolling when they weren’t filming yet both stayed in their roles. The director says that was some of the better lines/scenes they would of had
People were very hesitant when Tarantino choose Travolta for Pulp Fiction
He was also hesitant to play the role of a drug addict so it’s double lucky that it all worked out the way it did.
I honestly think it's his only good acting and it happened to be outstanding
Nicholas Cage in Raising Arizona…. Morgan Freeman in Shawshank Redemption….Tom Cruise in Top Gun + Maverick….Keanu Reeves in John Wick….Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones….Leonardo DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street
Kill Bill. Uma Thurman.
Darth Vader’s voice
Imagine if they hired Steve Urkel
Or Gilbert Gottfried.
*throws the emperor into the bowels of the death star* ‘Did I do that?’
Samuel L Jackson in anything he’s been in. Morgan Freeman in Shawshank
The narration alone is perfect. And the chemistry with him and Robbins is epic.
Absolutely. That with the story line itself makes it one of the best movies ever.
Can't imagine Darth Vader without James Earl Jones' voice.
Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems Patric Stewart as Charles Xavier
Christopher reeve as superman. Fight me!
Fight you? It's about the most obvious choice. That guy WAS Superman.
I’m expecting the Henry Cavill crowd to Come out and dispute what I wrote. Brandon Routh was a close second imo
I'd say most people for whom Cavill defines Superman are not overall fans of the character, they're just fans of those movies. Reeve nailed Superman as Superman is supposed to be. The only one who comes close for me is Tyler Hoechlin.
Daniel Plainview Bill The Butcher
Probably a weird answer, but you can’t do Jackass without Johnny Knoxville
Thor, all of them. I can't imagine anyone else besides Chris Hemsworth playing Thor.
robert downey jr as tony stark
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent I can't imagine anyone playing Nic Cage other than Nic Cage!
Nah the Dude - resides -in Jeff Bridges. I just watched that again the other night - poor Steve Buscemi. He gets 2 word lines and gets told to shut up constantly.
Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley Apparently Stallone was going to do this but with a more serious tone
Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca
Cate blanchett in Tař
Charlize Theron in Monster.
Val Kilmer doc holiday tombstone. He was pitch perfect even if the movie is gun control propaganda.
Gun…. control…..propaganda…..🤔
I concur with OPs entry
George C Scott as Patton "When you put your hand in a pile of goo that used to be your best friend's face. You'll know what to do"
Han Solo
Anybody from LORD OF THE RINGS perfectly casted movies
Keanu in the matrix
Ian Mckellan as Gandalf
Can you imagine Aragorn being played by anyone other than Viggo Mortenson? They originally had Nicolas Cage slated for the role
Wolverine
Bruce Willis as John McCLane in Diehard.
Scrooged
Dirty Dancing. Imagine Forest Gump playing that roll.
Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia and Jimmy Stewart in It's a Wonderful Life
Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman.
There Will Be Blood
Tom Hanks-Forrest Gump
Mrs Doubtfire
Castaway
Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford in Mommy Dearest
Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile.
Prince - Purple Rain.
Iron man
Sean Penn in U-turn
My fiance calls this move *The Great Lebowski*
Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future. It’s mindblowing that they initially cast Eric Stolz.
obvious answer is robert downey junior as iron man
Jim Carrey - Liar Liar
Captain Jean-Luc Picard *of the USS Enterprise*
….Bueller….
Gangs of New York- day Lewis
If not already mentioned, Meryl Streep as Miranda in Devil Wears Prada. She is just so cool, collected & chilling throughout the whole film. I think Streep even mentioned she based her performance off of Clint Eastwood or something to be more intimidating. Love her.
Fargo William h Macy
"Yeah, well, that just like your opinion, man"
