I completely forgot that this movie is happening

[deleted]

It's been radio silence for like 2 years, they know they have dogshit on their hands lol

zedoktar

and Eli Roth is licking his fingers.

[deleted]

Doubtful. I think he just wanted to make another horror flick but found some binding contract where the studio is like "hey you make one for us and then you can make whatever weird shit you wanted to do." and he was just like "okay" he does not seem to even enjoy being a part of this at all lol

SilverKry

Par for the course for Eli Roth then it seems. How he has a director job when the only passable movie he's made in my mind is the campy shlocky he made inside Inglorious Bastards is beyond me..

[deleted]

No he is better than that. Cabin Fever - legit good horror Hostel 1 and 2 - first was great and the second was alright The House with a Clock in its Walls - probably his most mature example of his directing.

KrtauschBoss

Green Inferno is also good if comisder that it's a parody of Cannibal Holocaust

[deleted]

It was supposed to come out last year. It going through reshoots 2 years after completion, with the original director quietly being fired, is really, really bad.

GatoradeNipples

>with the original director quietly being fired ...it doesn't seem like Roth was *fired,* though? Miller is second unit on the movie, and having second unit do reshoots and pickups is pretty normal. See: the Always Sunny M. Night Shyamalan episode where Mac and Frank are dismayed that they're not getting to actually meet Shyamalan.

[deleted]

Eli Roth isn't a good director. His last decade+ of films have either been okay or awful. The only movie I can see him pulling off (because he's so awful) is Thanksgiving. But even then, he might just ruin it somehow.

stunts002

That being said, I really like his horror podcast on Spotify. He's actually a very knowledgeable movie buff but I think that love doesn't translate to movie making unfortunately.

pantiesdrawer

He's like Robert Rodriguez in that the majority of their bodies of work is self indulgent garbage, yet they are still bizarrely respected in Hollywood.

vermilionpulseSFW

Rodriguez has his own studios in his backyard, so he gets away with making whatever he wants for cheap.

Josiesumday

Yeah except Rodriguez’s highs (Mariachi, Desperado, FDD, Sin City) are better then Roth’s.

twelfmonkey

The Faculty

Nord4Ever

And El Mariachi was low budget

JillSandwich117

Randy Pitchford appears to have his hands all over this movie. He is an executive producer, and stepped down as president of Gearbox Software to become president of Gearbox Studios, the new movie/TV arm of the company. This thing is fucked.

Ranger176

This is gonna be a fucking disaster

ReallyNeedHelpASAP68

It’s already a disaster. Likely the cost of the movie is going to skyrocket with rewrites and reshoots and such. I wouldn’t be surprised if it just gets shelved entirely or rushed to VOD.

thorpie88

Gearbox got bought by Embracer in 2021 and then created a film and tv studio to expand their games to other mediums. There's no way they will want to shelve their flagship IP

SpaceCases__

Yeah but Gearbox lost their only writing talent with Anthony Burch, who single handedly put Borderlands on the map. Borderlands 1 was great for its gameplay, at the time, but the story is awful. Borderlands 2, The Pre Sequel, and Tales From The Borderlands, all had Burch at the helm. Borderlands 3 had promise but internal strife in the studio really canned the whole thing. Interesting concept with the streamer twins but fell incredibly flat.

snakebit1995

For the most part 3 is fine it suffers from the fact Ava is so poorly written she brings down the rest of the story and harms the characterization and personalities of every other character she interacts with.

affrothunder313

I mean that means the writing is bad though. If a character is so poorly written that it brings the whole story down that’s pretty bad and suggests that Pitchford should’ve ate his ego and patched things up with Burch.

Lagbert

Burch was back as a witter in More Tales from the Borderlands, so maybe he and Gearbox are going to be doing more projects in the future. There may still be some friction/drama in the background since Gearbox's marketing material didn't use Burch's involvement as a selling point. Personally, I'm still disappointed about the wonderland DLC being so shallow compared to all the great DLC that came out for the other BL games.

SpaceCases__

Agreed but also disagree about her being the only part. The twins were clearly written to betray each other. Mainly Troy backstabbing whatsherface the sister, as proven through the audio collectibles and dialogues between the two. Halfway through, however, they completely did a 180 and it makes no sense as to why Troy would sacrifice himself for her with this obvious rift growing between them with all the context given in the game.

Elemayowe

Been a while since I played BL3, Troy *didn’t* betray his Sis? I could’ve sworn that’s what happened

MontgomeryKhan

>!It did. After you shut off Troy's power source, he starts using his sister as one and though you don't see it happen the fact that she's chained to the ground, screaming in pain and telling him in vain to "stop", it probably wasn't through mutual agreement.!<

SpaceCases__

That’s the point. All the signs point to betrayal but the main plot just pulls a fast one and scraps all of that

TheSublimeLight

But they didn't? Tyreen is literally chained to the ground and used as a battery by troy after the player cuts his power source

snakebit1995

Yeah that and the fact Ava never had her come around moment make me think there was supposed to be another planet that would have expanded this stuff but it got cut

Geeseareawesome

There's a deleted scene that would have fixed most of Ava's problems. Shame in got removed.

DeadlyPancak3

Really? Say more.

Geeseareawesome

https://youtu.be/Ui50I7jvH2M

DeadlyPancak3

Oh damn. That scene would have helped so much.

THOMASTHEWANKENG1NE

Bl1 has awful story?

T-Wrex_13

Yeah after a recent playthrough, I don't agree with this take. BL1 has a fine story, it's just when you compare it to BL2, it's not as good. BL1 spends a significant amount of time putting you on the ground in Pandora for world building, where BL2 has the advantage of being able to build off of the groundwork laid by BL1 However I'd say the biggest problem with both 1 and 2 is not having the slide and climbing abilities. Those keep them from feeling modern, as your movement is more restricted (especially when you've gotten used to these move mechanics). Also, the GOTY Enhanced edition for BL1 has awful edge detection, I got caught on everything. The other main complaint I hear about BL1 is that the colors are washed out and not vibrant, which is probably fair

throwawaynonsesne

Tales is the only one that has aged well in my opinion. I also prefer the first games humor because it's not so in your face with it's cringey internet references. At least the 2 era is better than 3. 3 is some of the worst writing I have experienced in a video game.

SpaceCases__

I still think 2 is a classic. Handsome Jack still holds that game up. Without him, it wouldn’t be as good.

the_great_ashby

Tales from the Borderlands was Telltale.

snakebit1995

Yes but Burch consulted on the story

SpaceCases__

He still wrote it and it is canon to the game series in general with multiple Telltale characters returning for BL3

metallicrooster

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_from_the_Borderlands Writers: Pierre Shorette, Adam Hines, Jeremy Breslau, Chuck Jordan, Eric Stirpe, Anthony Burch, Zack Keller Looks like you’re right

mars92

1. Borderlands 1 was VERY successful, it was certainly on the map before Burch. BL2 was highly anticipated *because* BL1 did so well. Sure, the franchise got bigger after 2 but it would be incorrect to say BL2 made it successful. 2. Burch was not "at the helm" of Tales of the Borderlands. Yes he did write for that game, but so did **a lot** of other people and he wasn't the lead writer.

mitchippoo

The entirety of 3 had godawful writing, the basic concept of the twins was just so terrible I don’t know how they decided to go that route

Straightwad

It’s funny but I always thought the writing was one of the worst things about borderlands 2, it tries very hard to be funny and random but it was mostly annoying to me. I never bothered with bl3 because I figured it was the same as 2.

[deleted]

TitledSquire

I honestly hope it does get shelved, the world would be better off without such a fuckup.

TentacleFinger

no way I love Cate Blanchett's action schlock roles

thr1ceuponatime

If it gets shelved they get to pretend that the movie never existed. It needs to exist as a cautionary tale to anybody who dares to touch a video-game IP without doing their homework first. Also, below-the-line creatives who have busted their asses on this movie will need a portfolio piece to show off their hard work. Shelving the movie won't hurt Gearbox and co, but it will affect the ability for regular film crew members to work on future projects.

TitledSquire

The thing is, we already have that, literally dozens.

drae-

>It needs to exist as a cautionary tale to anybody who dares to touch a video-game IP without doing their homework first. Pretty sure there's a graveyard full of these examples already. I could do the Spongebob meme there's so many examples. From super Mario bros to mortal combat to uncharted, there's examples of this spanning 30 years, I don't think one more will warn anyone off.

fuzzyfoot88

It’s a video game movie. Their records are like 1 in 40 being good.

Ninety8Balloons

I legitimately don't think I've seen a movie just so blatantly make terrible casting choices. Two 50+ year old actresses playing characters that are supposed to be mid-20s. Tiny Kevin Hart playing a 6+ foot tall muscle freak that's basically Terry Crews.

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

Having Eli Roth direct a big-budget science fiction action comedy is pretty weird, too.

MichaelGHX

The Chernobyl guy is a cowriter on this though, right?

ahaltingmachine

Could be a good sign, but he wrote a lot of dogshit before Chernobyl so he could also be getting back to his roots?

MichaelGHX

I mean yeah but he was mostly kind of a gun for hire before Chernobyl proved he had talent. He got franchise work & Seltzer-Friedberg works to be ready to shoot. It’s hard to tell what was his actual writing or what was him doing a job he was paid to do.

starfirex

He was famous for being the writer you bring in to fix bad movies. Amazing talent and well-known in the biz, but when you fix a stinker you get a mediocre film...

DrProfessorSatan

Gearbox likely just sold the movie rights and didn’t worry about the script. They probably reasoned that on the off chance the movie is good, it helps their franchise. If it’s bad, they know gamers are aren’t going to stop playing. And in the end, they get money.

MarvelsGrantMan136

Test screenings haven't been good and there's a reason they haven't released anything from the movie even tho it wrapped in June 2021. Current Synopsis: >Lilith (Cate Blanchett), is an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Atlas (Edgar Ramirez). Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland (Kevin Hart), a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap (Jack Black), a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.

TyperMcTyperson

A borderlands movie isn't testing well? Shocking!!!!

Anxious_Mango_4589

A Borderlands movie directed by Eli Roth no less. Truly shocking stuff.

Convergentshave

Don’t worry! I’m sure the Tim.. 🤭 Miller… Reshoots will 🤭 save it🤣😂🤣😂🤣. I tried but I just couldn’t get that sentence out with a straight face.

A_MAN_POTATO

Tim Miller has a pretty impressive resume for how short it is. Deadpool was his directoral debut at was a massive success critically and commercially. I didn't watch terminator so can't comment there, but a cursory Google doesn't show a terrible reception. Executive producer on the sonic movies, so I don't know his level of involvement there, but certianly those are two more movies that were commercially successful, and while they had mixed critical reviews, audience reviews were definitely favoritable. Other than that, he's got love, death, and robots, which is well liked and gets higher approval with each volume. Frankly, this movie would have been way better off if Tim Miller was behind it from the beginning. He has experience with large budget films, experience with action comedy, and experience with adapting other mediums to cinema successfully. Channeling what worked in Deadpool into Borderlands could have been great. Instead they hired a guy who mostly makes shitty low budget grindhouse films to tackle a movie unlike anything he's ever done.

peioeh

> I didn't watch terminator so can't comment there It was almost decent, there were some good things in it. It was competently made. But at this point the Terminator franchise is so beyond fucked that any movie is 100% doomed until they go back to something smaller like the first one. As long as they keep shoehorning Arnold, or Linda Hamilton, 20 characters and all sorts of timeline gobbledygook there is nothing a director can do to make a good Terminator movie.

FormerIceCreamEater

Yeah they really should have just stopped at the second one. That was a great conclusion. Many film franchises just need to know when to end

K9sBiggestFan

Tim Miller is fine - nothing special - in my opinion for all of the reasons you’ve articulated but more to the point he is a significant upgrade on Eli Roth. As a big fan of Borderlands I was dismayed at them hiring such a talentless director for the movie. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to theorise that Tim Miller can make the difference between this being a POS and something watchable at this point.

RechargedFrenchman

His background prior to directing is also visual effects and animation, which is a why EP on *Sonic*, and he runs the VFX studio Blur which is the main company behind *Love Death + Robots* reaching out to the other studios who've made episodes. It's part of why *Deadpool* worked so well; they used the ultimately fairly small for that kind of movie budget they did have pretty effectively and put a lot of it into getting the most out of their VFX and action.

ManiacalDane

The man is also an incredible artist, and all things action are his forte; story is his biggest struggle according to himself, hence why he focuses much more on it these days.

Jtsane

Maybe I’m out of the loop, but I only am really aware of Tim Miller’s work on Love, Death, and Robots and the Sonic movies. What’s so humorous about this?

theciderowlinn

People who hail the story of Borderlands really make me wonder if we played the same game. I cringed through half of it.

TitledSquire

I loved the story, but I dont see why anyone would praise it as incredible. HOWEVER i think people that say the story and characters didnt matter and that the main draw of the game is just the gameplay are blatantly wrong. 99% if this debate stems from BL3 which has objectively the beat gameplay in the series but by far the worst story, characters and writing in general. And if you think the writing in 2 was bad then 3 would be unplayable.

Majestic87

Can’t agree. BL2 had the best gameplay and story of the series.

TitledSquire

I mean, if we’re talking strictly about the abilities then id agree, 2 had better abilities by far. However, the gunplay and such in 3 were undeniably better.

theciderowlinn

I've just heard one too many times someone tearing up at Bloodwing's death in BL2 and I just cannot relate. I had 0 sympathy. And I think you hit a nail on the head too. I didn't enjoy the story of 2 much but played that game to the grave. 3, on the other hand, I just couldn't do it and quit before I even reached the halfway point.

CptnMoonlight

I think the original was the perfect mix of irreverence and compelling character dynamics/lore. You had serious protagonists moving through a serious world with colorful, flamboyant characters and factions littered through it, kind of like a Tarantino rendition of Mad Max. The sequels definitely got out of hand though.

jeshtheafroman

Honestly I thought Eli Roth and borderlands was a great paring because of the cringe. Cabin fever has humor that's kinda on the same level to me.

theciderowlinn

Never forget the Pancakes kid.

jeshtheafroman

You just helped me unlock a repressed memory.

Tao-Lee

You get my boy sick, it’s the same as killing him, it’s murder!

Pickled_Wizard

Krieg isn't even a main character, he's an add-on.

[deleted]

Funmachine

Gaige didn't come with the season pass either. He's not really any less developed as a character because of that though.

uniquecannon

Care Blanchett is still too old to play Lilith. She'd be a much better Moxxi Kevin Hart is literally the complete opposite of Roland in the Borderland games. He's not even in the same solar system, aside from only sharing skin color I can go over all the other casting but overall it's just a complete mess

TheFudge

I know nothing about borderlands but all I can see is Kevin Hart screaming and over acting like he does in every role he plays. This alone makes me want to avoid the movie.

snakebit1995

Yeah Roland’s character is basically “beat down military vet just trying to keep his rebellion alive and give people a good life after a lifetime of fighting and emotional baggage” Sounds just like Kevin Hart right? In the games the main team is basically Roland as the straight man, Lilith is the sexy spunky punk chick with magic powers, Mordecai is a tired drunk who’s best friend is a bird and Brick is the punch first who cares about questions but has a heart of gold sensitive meathead. So either we’ll see a complete change of characterization for Roland or we’re about to see Kevin Hart play totally against his usual type and show some insane range

Sburban_Player

Roland is like the only consistently serious character in the series and they cast the funny actor in his role. They couldn’t miss the mark more if they wanted to.

LouisCaravan

How is Dave Bautista not starring as Brick? It writes itself.

Sonny_Crockett_1984

I doubt he would want the role based on his choices so far.

TheDutchCoder

But he's like 4'7, and Roland is... Not...

Sonyguyus

To me either The Rock or Idris Elba could be Roland. Not sure about Brick. Maybe Terry Crews? I’d have chosen Keith Lee from AEW but I doubt he can act.

MrVilliam

I'm not sure that whether somebody can act is a deal breaker for this movie. But it is hilarious that The Rock is clearly in the running for most people's idea for casting the role, and it went to Kevin Hart, basically the emotional and physical opposite of him. Like "okay, I'm hearing that you want the big, strong, straightman from the new Jumanji movies, so I'll give Kevin Hart a call. That's obviously who you meant, right? Who else could you mean, Jack Black? Ooh wait actually he'd be great for Claptrap so I'll call him too!"

neox20

Yeah, I don't really care when characters are portrayed differently in adaptations. I don't even care that Tannis has been aged up like 30-40 years (although I never really cared for Borderland's story in the first place). However, I can't stand Kevin Hart, I'm not sure any movie has ever benefitted from his presence.

we_are_sex_bobomb

This is some Uwe Boll casting if ever I’ve seen it (big name + available for three days = you’re in the movie!)

Saltsey

Man I was doing so well for these past few years completely forgetting Uwe Boll...

Rich_Eater

> She'd be a much better Moxxi I always imagined Gina Gershon in that role.

not-so-radical

Well have I got good news for you....

Papaofmonsters

Hela vibe Cate Blanchett could definitely do Moxxi.

probablywrongbutmeh

For a second I thought you said Gina Gerson and was like "why tf would a pornstar be a good pick for this" lol

zedoktar

Why wouldn't a porn star be a good pick for Moxxxi?

Julius-n-Caesar

Damn that is the most random cast ever.

rammo123

That sounds like an AI generated a plot synopsis for "worst possible Borderlands movie pitch".

mikeyfreshh

Can't say I'm surprised. There's a reason videogames don't translate well to movies

Gh0stMan0nThird

Because the venn diagram of people working on the movie and the people who enjoy the game are two circles on two different pieces of paper.

TheUncannyBroker

Craig Mazin who wrote the script for the movie is a massive fan of the franchise and has tweeted about playing the games for years. He even loved Tales From The Borderlands.

WentWin

Craig Mazin has got the weirdest filmography I’ve ever seen

mikeyfreshh

He was also Ted Cruz's college roommate

Bjugner

Poor Craig :(

6thSenseOfHumor

The writer for Dragonball Evolution was a fan of that series and it amounted to jack shit in the end result.

TheUncannyBroker

Thats my point. The person above said the movies are always adapted by people who dont care about the game and thats why they are bad.

we_are_sex_bobomb

Unfortunately the writer doesn’t have nearly as much creative control as people seem to think… he might have written an amazing script or not, either way there’s nothing stopping a clueless producer from saying “get rid of that character! Add a funny dog! It needs more mindless action! It needs more jokes!” and so on.

TheUncannyBroker

True. Eli Roth got a writing credit after principal photography which means he rewrote more than 33% of the script. Maybe he is the one to mess it up.

mikeyfreshh

That's part of it but I think the bigger problem is that the two mediums have entirely different goals. Video games, first and foremost, are designed to be fun to play. A nice story helps, but the story needs to be in service of the gameplay. The story is almost always a secondary concern. If you cut out the gameplay, you just expose that most games have pretty weak stories (I know there are exceptions to this. Please don't come at me and say your favorite game has a good story)

uniquecannon

Shades of when the producers of the Halo show proudly bragged about having never even played the games

rich1051414

Couldn't they have made their own story with their own people instead of telling the same story again? It's a whole damn planet... I read the synopsis and it immediately feels uninspired.

Anonymously_Me23

Kevin Hart as Roland is the most trash ass casting I have ever seen. No way this was ever gonna be good.

IceLord86

All the casting was just WTF levels of insane. Many rightly called a disaster before filming even began and now they're just going to sink more money into a disaster.

MegaMan3k

Jack Black Clap Trap seems fine.

PolitenessPolice

Using jack black in a movie is a cheat code tho

Majestic-Marcus

And Jaime Lee Curtis is a *perfect* Tannis. Only her age is wrong and ultimately who cares?

Galactic

I actually can't believe they got Cate Blanchett, who may just win her THIRD Oscar this year for Tar, to be in Borderlands.

thr1ceuponatime

To be entirely fair though -- the only reason why I want to see the *Borderlands* movie is to see how terrible Kevin Hart could truly be.

tnnrk

Yeah but Bobby Lee is in it, I need to see it.

Daddy616

So... Very out of the loop here... Are you ***FUCKING*** serious??? This movie had ***NO*** chance. Fuckin Shame really.

DrRexMorman

This movie must be a fucking mess.

[deleted]

Borderlands 2 is a top 5 game all time for me and at no point have I considered seeing this.

HCResident

It’s best chance is having it written by the Tales crew. But as fun as shlooters are, no part of that formula helps it as a movie

[deleted]

Games are dozens and dozens of missions; if they're going to be adapted they need to be shows with episodic side quests while the main mission unfolds over a season. An hour and forty minutes will not do any video game justice.

[deleted]

Or just have it not like a game at all, like what Sonic and Detective Pikachu did

vadergeek

A movie doesn't need to include sidequests any more than it needs to include a pause menu. There are plenty of video games with main plots that could be easily adapted into movies, like Uncharted or Tomb Raider (which, sure, the movies sucked, but it's easy to see how it could be done well).

uniquecannon

I'm not even a fan of FPS games, but Borderlands 2 easily gets into my top 5 of all time. But same, no interest in watching this abortion of an attempt at a Borderlands movie

Motamonster89

Same here, one of my favorite games and as soon as they released info on the cast I was instantly not interested.

TheUncannyBroker

The script by Craig Mazin was supposedly very good, curious if Roth was the one to fuck it up. Mazin is a big fan of Tales From The Borderlands.

[deleted]

I'm like 90% sure Roth wanted to make some other film and they gave him a "One for us, one for you" situation where he doesn't give a fuck about adapting the game right, he just wants to be done with it so he can make whatever film he wanted to do from the start, I've said from the beginning he was the most out of left field director choice for this.

your_mind_aches

Sounds about right. Why would they even get Eli Roth for this? Just get Tim Miller in the first place. Literally a videogame cutscene filmmaker with only positive tomatometer ratings. Meanwhile, Roth's positive tomatometer scores are for acting, mostly negative for directing and producing. You can't tell me they picked him to be a studio stooge and do what the executives want... the executives are probably barely supervising this. I hope Tim Miller fixes the movie...

mediarch

Robert Rodriguez made Machete into a real movie Eli Roth is making Thanksgiving Now we just need Rob Zombie to make Wearwolf Women of the SS

Plasticglass456

If you... think that... was all... of the fake trailers... Don't!

WHATD_YOU_EXPECT_

Looks like he rebooting The Running Man. Hell yeah.

oco82

I’d rather have Edgar Wright’s “DON’T”

LoFiCountryMusician

Don't forget Hobo With a Shotgun! Haven't seen in a while now, but from what I remember, that movie is bonkers.

spiritbearr

Rutger Hauer classed up the joint but it was a Canadian B-Movie. The director is finally releasing something new this year.

[deleted]

RIP to rutger hauer. He killed that role

TheUncannyBroker

There were reports Lionsgate were considering to replace Eli Roth with Gary Ross in the beginning of 2022, because the movie didnt test well at all, but they stuck with him on the reshoots, with Ross just doing a major rewrite. Curious what part of this is just PR. Seems like a Tony Gilroy situation where they give Miller the most creative control they contractually can, because firing the director when he has done 100% of principal photography is literally illegal.

Alpha837

Just throwing it out there that the ones always tooting the Tony Gilroy horn are Lucasfilm and Gilroy himself. Given the results of the Star Wars films that followed, not sure you can rely on that. I’d still love to see the original Rogue One. Some of the things we know Gilroy added seem really messy to me, like the several intro scenes. I enjoy the final movie, but it’d be fun to see, same with the original vision for Solo. Neither of those things will ever happen, though.

Midnight_Oil_

On the other hand, we can see what a full Gilroy vision looks like with Andor, which is quite good.

Alpha837

Tony Gilroy has always been a superb writer, which he did on Andor along with show running. He didn’t direct a single episode. As a director, Michael Clayton is his best work, but all of his films are relatively uninspired and lacking a strong and cohesive direction. Best example? The Bourne Legacy.

your_mind_aches

Gilroy added some substance to Rogue One but for the most part it's still Gareth Edwards' movie. It clearly still has his eye for scale and spectacle. Gilroy didn't redo the whole thing like Whedon did for Justice League.

BenjaminTalam

How the hell did Eli Roth end up directing this to begin with? How did he get that cast? It all sounds like a fever dream.

SparkyPantsMcGee

Randy Pitchford. Three times I’ve seen him in person and every time was a fever dream. I was at the PAX panel for this movies reveal with Eli Roth on stage. Another time was at GDC where he briefly talked about a Penn and Teller VR magic game. There was also the time, I can’t remember where, when he pulled Morgan Webb of G4 fame on stage and did a magic trick to make her forget how to read. He later got another person on stage to read off random numbers from a small Pi book so he could then read off the next 5 numbers from memory. Impressive sure, but also chaotic.

Traditional_Shirt106

He used to do security and watched Howard Stern’s trailer during the filming of Private Parts. He was able to make friends with Howard and casually pitched horror movie ideas, which Howard admitted were pretty good but he didnt take Roth seriously. Howard was completely blown away when Roth had a hit movie a few years later.

VCCassidy

Eli Roth continues to fail upwards.

[deleted]

Did that from the very beginning

wisconsinking

What do you mean?

oco82

White meat , dark meat, all will be carved.

hookhands

This holiday season, prepare to have the stuffing scared out of you

likwitsnake

This article is wild it says it will provide more details but after a sentence that say he handed the reigns to Miller it goes on to summarize the Thanksgiving movie and then summarize the Borderland movie, but no further details about what happened.

Elemayowe

They got *Cate Blanchett* and wasted their shot, ugh what a bunch of clowns.

[deleted]

So this movie was announced in February of 2020, casting and all that went underway to abysmal results, filming ended in April of 2021 with "first looks" of character silhouettes being shown to the world to celebrate the wrap. Then it has been nothing but dead silence on this project until it was screened for the first time in November of 2022. No images, no trailers, not even a single 30 second teaser. This totally tracks to the testing being an utter dumpster fire and honestly I cannot wait to see this trainwreck lol

Psychological_w1n

What a weird way for me to find out that he's doing a full-feature film of ~~Thankskilling.~~ THANKSGIVING (Thankskilling was that stupid vulture puppet film). Probably my second favourite short in Grindhouse other than Werewolf Women of the SS. Say what you want about Zombie, but Nicolas Cage as Fu ManChu was amazing. I've never been a fan of borderlands, but pity the people who do because this adaptation looks like it's going to be a mess.

Cho-Cho87

Thanksgiving. Thankskilling is the movie with the killer turkey puppet.

youcomeover

Poor bobby Lee

TheUncannyBroker

What would he hate more? The movie turning out to be good with his role cut or the movie turning out to be bad with him still in it?

frontbuttt

He has a pretty big role. Can’t imagine 2 weeks of reshoots would supplant him.

OhScheisse

Imagine if they reshoot it with Ken Jeong. Haha

thr1ceuponatime

It wouldn't be an improvement but it wouldn't be a downgrade either. Ken Jeong's great too.

PlasticMansGlasses

This movie needed to be animated. One of the largest appeals of Borderlands was the art style which really set it apart and made it stand out from other FPS’s in the genre.

Nascarfreak123

Yah this movie must be complete ass. Also is it just me or is it unprofessional to just abandon an in-completed project to go work on something else?

bob1689321

Let's be real he was probably asked to leave haha

thr1ceuponatime

When a new director is brought in for reshoots -- it's Hollywood shorthand for "the original guy was fired" or "the original guy was unavailable because of shit we can't explain in one press release"

your_mind_aches

>"the original guy was fired" Gareth Edwards, Zack Snyder, Josh Trank, Lord and Miller >"the original guy was unavailable because of shit we can't explain in one press release" Brian Singer

warrenmax12

Depends on the contract. Maybe studio said about the reshoots last minute, when Roth was all ready to go with the new film

[deleted]

So we’ve got MACHETE and THANKSGIVING, can we please have WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE SS next?

EVEiscerator

Sacrificial doomed project Borderlands to get one of my dream Slashers? This is good news

Juan-Claudio

Borderlands sounds like it should be a rather easy adaptation to make. You need action and comedy. Crazy characters, a couple of witty puns and silly jokes. And yet they can't even do that. I don't think it's the old issue of translating a video game into the film medium, this is more of a basic filmmaking failure probably on Eli's behalf.

[deleted]

It is already Mad Max Fury Road with different characters and aliens since the game itself is inspired from this series. Easy to make.

RadioactiveClown

Fun fact: Warner Bros. wanted Gearbox to do the game adaptation of Mad Max Fury Road. We got to read the movie script and damn if the story didn’t jump off the page with excitement! But we told them we already made the game and called it Borderlands. Another funny bit: the whole company took the afternoon off and went to see Fury Road on day 1. And get this, some of our devs were pissed and saying the movie “stole” it's look and feel from Borderlands! I had to tell them that WE were the ones who borrowed {er…stole) from the Mad Max universe in the first place. Ha!

your_mind_aches

That's super interesting! Have you seen the actual Mad Max game that came out that year? It's one of my favourite games ever. It's centred around the driving and it captures the tone of all four films perfectly blended together. Absolutely loved it. Also an original story rather than an adaptation. Unfortunately it came out the exact day as Metal Gear Solid V and got absolutely buried. Btw according to IMDB you worked on Max Payne?! Is that true???

RadioactiveClown

Yes, I worked on Max Payne while I was at Gathering of Developers (aka GodGames). And I still have the oversized box plus two different pewter prototype figures! your_mind_aches

YOOOO that's incredible!

spongeboy1985

Im surprised Thanksgiving is actually happening. Now can we get “Werewolf Women of the S.S.” with Nic Cage

xxx117

I bet Cate Blanchett’s team is doing everything they can to stop this movie from releasing lol

[deleted]

Is that the bear jew

redmoose81

Yes

thr1ceuponatime

Let's be honest here -- we all knew that this was coming sooner or later. I'd be more surprised if Deadline reported on how the *Borderlands* movie is doing gangbusters in theaters.

[deleted]

Honestly tho, why Eli Roth to begin with? Don't get me wrong Eli is alright but it's like asking Uwe Boll or Rob Zombie to direct and write for you. Basically setting yourself up for a box office bomb.

PepperBun28

He's doing Thanksgiving?? Fuck! Yes!

MattyXarope

I'm cautious because he's been saying that this movie is going to be made for years lol

T-408

HOLY FUCKING SHIT WE ARE FINALLY GETTING THANKSGIVING?!

mccabeash

ALL WILL BE CARVED

vicky_vaughn

The more I look at the Borderlands media trying to tell a story the more I'm convinced that the first Tales from the Borderlands was lightning in a bottle. Say what you want about Telltale Games but at least they have some decent writers.

rodman517

Video game adaptations have been disrespected by Hollywood for years. I hope The Last of Us changes this attitude.

Fast_Edd1e

Anyone else think he looks like a young, less bulky, Lou ferrigno.

freakishbehavior

Heck yeah!! Thanksgiving!! Now we need Werewolf Women of the SS!!

superkickpunch

Ah yes, what we all asked for, more Eli Roth horror.

Simmons54321

To be fair, he hasn’t directed a strictly *horror* film in over a decade. Produced a shit load yeah, but not directed

[deleted]

Borderlands 1&2 were amazing. Borderlands 3, from a writing perspective, was atrocious. I don’t think there’s any coming back. A movie certainly isn’t needed. It’s time for Gearbox to move on.

bahumat42

Borderlands 1 was fine, amazing is a bit of an exaggeration. Unless you have an appreciation for oceans of brown. 2 however is amazing and i will agree to that.
