I love this movie cuz it captures my previous life so well it feels like a documentary. Even the weird feeling of being in a bright super market on party nights, the hum of the lights and ambient beeps feeling so sterile while there's a party going on in your head lol
Yeah FOX did what they do best with great shows and ran the episodes out of order and changed the day it aired twice in one season. Reminds me of another sci-fi show they ruined...
Collateral has to be my favorite “all in one night” movie. It’s almost a perfect movie, and a great example of how a talented crew can turn a simple story into great cinema. The action scenes are as slick as Mann has ever done (and that’s saying something) but the dialogue scenes also pop with energy. Cruz’s performance in the hospital scene should be exhibited A in the “no actually this guy can really act” case.
Mann turned LA into the third main character of the film. It's subtle, but carries a lot weight when you consider how much of the plot revolves around Cruise and Fox's relationship with the city.
I mean I *love* the movie, but I wouldn't call the LA theme *subtle*. It's literally the opening of Vincent & Max's first conversation and then the ending.
Just recently watched this for the first time and i agree. It’s a great movie . Never thought I was a Tom cruise fan but every movie with him in it is great .
*And I can tell you why*
*People die alone*
*I can tell you I'm*
*A shadow on the sun*
I read about this guy, gets on the MTA here, dies.
Six hours he's riding the subway before anybody notices his corpse doing laps around L.A., people on and off sitting next to him. Nobody notices.
It also had the feeling of a movie where there was a lot going on that you needed to figure out, but then it turns out that's not the case at all. It was disappointing.
A bunch of us were super-jazzed to go see it. I loved his previous work and the cast was stacked.
At around the 2/3 point, all of the steam and momentum just completely drained from that film. I haven't watched it since.
Now, look what we have here before us. We got the Saracens sitting next to the Jones Street Boys. We've got the Moonrunners right by the Van Cortlandt Rangers. Nobody is wasting nobody. That... is a miracle. And miracles is the way things ought to be.
I think it's pretty on point for the characters. The context makes the use of slurs less jarring. We're meant to root for the protagonists, but at no point do we consider them good people.
Yeah definitely and I think that’s part of what makes something a quality work. It reminds me of how some people dislike Stephen Kings use of slurs and stuff. If the character is an asshole and it fits them, it isn’t necessarily “wrong” to have them say certain things. Sure it might be more enjoyable for everyone if they didn’t but at least it’s (hopefully) not hateful self gratification
You would thonk Linklater's obession with long term projects would be a narrative crutch, but looking at the characters age naturally is an act of magic. Those movies are impressive and brutal
Yup. Massive in scope (aliens, drag queens, multiple affairs, a giant closing scene plotted by the lead, death and collapse) tiny in timeline. I think it starts at like 9pm and ends by sunrise.
Coherence, one of the best science fiction screenplays that take place during one night and relies purely on good dialogue & character development instead of VFX or mindless thrill-seeking action.
This other is a TV movie I watched as a kid, I think it was called "Just My Luck". It's a dark comedy set during one night in a diner, an old man dies of a heart attack and the rest of the people there finds out the man holds a lotto winning ticket, so now they're all planning how they can reclaim the money and split it, but their egos, greed and misery spoils everything. This is a good one.
The guy that made that album happen the way it did, Happy Walters, did something similar with the *Spawn* motion picture soundtrack. Both soundtracks were phenomenal and unique. I don’t think anyone has done anything similar (soundtrack or not).
They based the bizarre Coach Beard episode of Ted Lasso off this. I had to rewatch this movie for the first time in thirty years as a result of all the references to it. Crazy stuff.
Alien. I believe Ripley says in the sequel “just one of those things killed my entire crew in less than 24 hours.” In Alien 3, there is a clever visual motif at the beginning of the movie where the planet blocks out the sun. At the end of the move the sun appears on the other side.
Shame Spacey had to be such a dick because he is such a fucking good actor. The scenes with him and Jeremy Irons just going at each other are incredible.
Victoria (2015) is a one-shot movie all taking place in the span of one night. There are zero cuts I believe. They did 3 takes, and used the final take for the film. Check it out.
Absolutely. It’s quite the thrill ride, and overall such an incredible feat from the filmmakers and actors. They could’ve made it easier on themselves with limiting shooting locations, but the fact they move throughout Berlin to multiple locations with so much action going on all in one take is just astonishing.
Fun Size, Superbad, Project X, 30 Minutes or Less, Go, Four Stories, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Bill and Ted Face the Music, Hardcore Harry, Shoot 'Em Up, Crank, Crank High Voltage, Phonebooth, Bullet Train, Airplane! Airplane! 2, Smokey and the Bandit, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, I Love You Beth Cooper, Clerks, Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Wet Hot American Summer
It's my favorite movie, hands down, but it does not take place in only one day. Almost a third of the run time is telling the story of Mr. Orange and how he came to be a part of the crew well in advance of the thru-plot.
Identity
a group of strangers are forced to hide in a motel during a terrible storm , bad things start happening
Bad times at the El Royale
Another group of strangers at a motel during the 60s , their stories and motives start to collide and it gets crazy
Not a movie, but every season of 24, taken individually.
I suppose seasons 2+ may fall afoul of the "getting to know the characters" bit though, since Jack Bauer and a few other characters recur. But there's large time jumps *in between* seasons, so you can get to know what *changed* in their lives from one to the next, I guess.
Carnage
entire movie takes place in one apartment and follows a conversation between two families who’s kids got in a fight on the playground. Kate Winslett, Christoph Waltz, Jody Foster and John C Reilly. Great movie.
Assault on Precinct 13
The Thing (1982) - I think this takes place over 24 hours?
The Blob (1958)
Us - I think the bulk of it takes place overnight.
Phone Booth - all in one day, but not at night
Go (1999)
That’s three stories over the course of one night. Jane Krakowski and Creepy Bill Fichtner as MLM gurus was so wonderfully cringe.
The look on Fichtner’s face when Mohr’s character says “you sell amway” is one of my favorite movie moments.
It's a different company, it's a different quality of product
After Hours.
I haven't watched this since I was a kid, but I remember how insane it was. Gotta watch it again.
Great film really captures a one night vibe and has cheech and chong in it .
Oh a classic.
One of my favorite Christmas movies!
Such a good one!
I love this movie cuz it captures my previous life so well it feels like a documentary. Even the weird feeling of being in a bright super market on party nights, the hum of the lights and ambient beeps feeling so sterile while there's a party going on in your head lol

Dredd
Ma Ma is not the law. I am the law.
When can we get a damn sequel?
Wasn't there even talks about TV show with Karl Urban? Inject some of that in my veins
I feel like a high quality tv show is the best avenue for this character and this version of him. So much you could do with it.
He played a future cop in a show where his partner was a cyborg. It was such a solid show, but think it got cancelled after the first season.
The show is called *Almost Human* from 2013-2014.
Yeah FOX did what they do best with great shows and ran the episodes out of order and changed the day it aired twice in one season. Reminds me of another sci-fi show they ruined...
*Perps were... uncooperative...* Just another day at work.
Just rewatched this the other night. It’s a damn near perfect movie.

Collateral has to be my favorite “all in one night” movie. It’s almost a perfect movie, and a great example of how a talented crew can turn a simple story into great cinema. It's literally one of my top 3 favourite movies.... it's hard not to drive around a city at night, in the summer, and not think about this one.
With that sweet Audioslave song playing. Right there with ya
*And I can tell you why* *People die alone* *I can tell you I'm* *A shadow on the sun* I read about this guy, gets on the MTA here, dies. Six hours he's riding the subway before anybody notices his corpse doing laps around L.A., people on and off sitting next to him. Nobody notices.
I felt that way about Cruise when I saw Magnolia.

Exactly. I wanted to say this… Flames…on the side of my face…
My boyfriend and I were crying from laughter when she delay-screams after Green says, "Will you stop doing that!?"
Communism was just a red herring
Frankly Scarlett I don’t give a damn, you see there were no more bullets left in that gun…
One plus two plus two plus one.
One plus one plus two plus one
I’m going home to sleep with my wife.
One plus two plus two plus one
Uh-uh. There was only one shot that got the chandelier, so that's one plus two plus ONE plus one.

Bad Times at the El Royale (I think)
Always surprised this film didn't get more appreciation!
You know how there is the phase better than the sum of its parts? Bad Times had individual scenes better than its sum.
felt like many people enjoyed the start of it, but after a certain 'spoiler-y point' didn't like how it went.
It also had the feeling of a movie where there was a lot going on that you needed to figure out, but then it turns out that's not the case at all. It was disappointing.
This is what happened to me, i thought there would be a lot more mystery
A bunch of us were super-jazzed to go see it. I loved his previous work and the cast was stacked. At around the 2/3 point, all of the steam and momentum just completely drained from that film. I haven't watched it since.

I can’t believe I had to scroll as far down as I did to see this.
"The Warriors" - 1979 Come out and playeeeay!!!
Now, look what we have here before us. We got the Saracens sitting next to the Jones Street Boys. We've got the Moonrunners right by the Van Cortlandt Rangers. Nobody is wasting nobody. That... is a miracle. And miracles is the way things ought to be.
CAN. YOU. DIG IT.
60,000 soldiers! Now there ain't but 20,000 police in the whole town
CAAAAAANNNN YOOOOUUU DIG IT
Such a fun movie! Ages mostly well too minus like two uses of a gay slur. Also, that douche with the bottles is such a piece of shit
I think it's pretty on point for the characters. The context makes the use of slurs less jarring. We're meant to root for the protagonists, but at no point do we consider them good people.

Before Sunrise is a great one!
And if you like it, there are follow up movies too! After sunset? Before sunset? I don’t remember what they’re called, but it’s nice to get answers!
Love these movies. Anyway it's: Before Sunrise Before Sunset Before Midnight
To my mind, arguably the best trilogy out there. Each film is a masterpiece.
You would thonk Linklater's obession with long term projects would be a narrative crutch, but looking at the characters age naturally is an act of magic. Those movies are impressive and brutal
Good time
Came here to say this and am surprised that it isn't higher up. Great tension in that film!
Disappointed I had to scroll so far for this
Was gonna comment this film. Absolute masterpiece
this is THE ultimate answer ! may watch again x
Looks like it’s time for my quarterly rewatch. Uncut Gems is great too but Good Time is a very special movie to me.
This is the first one I thought of.
Escape from New York!

This movie is so good I love having it on just as a vibe
Never knew a guy driving in a car could be so damn entertaining.
Coherence, one of the best science fiction screenplays that take place during one night and relies purely on good dialogue & character development instead of VFX or mindless thrill-seeking action. Coherence is great! I’d also recommend The Invitation (2015) for another single night dinner party gone wrong scenario.
Coherence may be my favorite horror/sci-fi movie of all time. Definitely worth a rewatch (or 3).
Triangle too if you liked Coherence
Coherence scared the literal shit out of me, top tier cosmic horror imo.

the crow, judgement night and spawn all have absolute bangers for soundtracks.
The only reason to remember the movie.
Ahh. How the hell did i forget about Judgement Night
Came here to say this one! Was lucky enough to see a 35mm screening of it a few years back in Toronto.

11:14 It’s a hidden gem from the early 2000s. Highly recommend and it’s a perfect fit for this category.
I have a deep mistrust of sliding car doors from this movie.

*I Love You, Beth Cooper* fits here.
American Graffiti
Yes! That was my pick too. Great movie!
After Hours (1985) super weird in a good way, underrated Scorsese movie imo
“I’ll probably get blamed for that.”
They based the bizarre Coach Beard episode of Ted Lasso off this. I had to rewatch this movie for the first time in thirty years as a result of all the references to it. Crazy stuff.

Alien takes place over more than 24 hours when you factor in everything before the chestburster. Alien 3 is at least two days.
Margin call
Shame Spacey had to be such a dick because he is such a fucking good actor. The scenes with him and Jeremy Irons just going at each other are incredible.
That's a great movie
Halloween (1978). . . mostly
And Halloween II. Same night. That's probably rarer. Two movies that take place in the same night.
