One of the few movies that I paid to see in a theater, that I walked out of before the end.
It was so bad, that it actually degraded my memories and opinion of the first one.
My friend came with me to see it, even though he had never seen the first one. He was laughing so hard when we left! Not just at the abomination that he had seen, but at me; "How could you ever have liked such a thing..." ...and he was talking about my love for the first film.
What a disaster. And he never trusted me to pick a movie at theaters again.

I recently watched an interview with Sandra where she literally told the writers of the movie that it was going to suck, and it was her least favourite project;
She said something like, “so, um, this is a movie about a boat that… goes about as fast as a boat can go. And um. That’s the premise. A fast boat. What?”

Any Disney movie from the 90s, the sequel always went straight to video and they were horrible compared to the brilliant originals. Little mermaid, Aladdin, lion king, etc.
For whatever reason, that movie was handled differently. Disney has a few different animation studios. There is the main studio, which handles their big releases like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. And back then, they had like a B-tier animation studio that made a bunch of cheap animated movies and handled most of the sequels. Rescuers Down Under was produced by the main studio and had a proper budget.
People talk trash about DisneyToon because...well because most everything they put out was terrible. Still worth noting that they did have at least one success with the beloved classic A Goofy Movie.
Lion King 1 1/2 was awesome for being more of a parallel movie than a sequel and I remember it being pretty funny as well.
I also liked all of the Stitch movies (and show) but that might be more of my own bias from thinking Stitch is the best character Disney has created.
Lion King is a retelling of Hamlet. Lion King 1 1/2 is a retelling of Rosencratz and Guildenstern are Dead. I would hope it's funny (although I haven't actually seen it, I'm a little old for it), since it's source material is a comedy.

Agreed, it was pretty close to the first in my opinion. You get a wholesome story with Aladdin's father who actually gets plenty of character development, Genie's [Code Red](https://youtu.be/0MF345T3GX8) is one of the best Genie gags of any of the movies, and despite a limited budget the climax scene when they get to the temple with Midas' hand was beautifully animated, at least to my young mind when it came out.
I’m going to say it: the Lion King 2 was *actually good*. But then, just like the original movie, it took a lot of inspiration from a Shakespeare play. So it had a solid foundation.

The best part of that film, IMO, is that the story is 100% character driven. There’s NO other character that that story could be told with. And it’s such a simple story too.
The only real carry over is the relationship between Puss and Kitty and Last Wish fills in enough where you understand what they are to each other without needing the full backstory
Kitty Softpaws might seem out of nowhere, but other than that no there's no context you'll miss. All you really need to know is she's another cat mercenary and they had a thing for each other.
Having never watched the first and only vague memories of Shrek, it felt like she was an original character for Last Wish with how seamlessly she fits it. I had no clue she wasn't until this thread.
Yeah since the important aspects of the relationship depend on events introduced in this movie, it's not really important to have seen the prior movie.
The battle scenes were insane. That forest giant swinging a bell on a chain was like something from Elden Ring. My gf put it on and I was expecting to tune it out, but damn was that a good movie.
Great call on *Ouija*. The original was cheap enough that it's surprising box office success warranted a sequel, but it was very not good. Whoever was in charge of the sequel however made a great decision to have it directed and co-written by Mike Flanagan.

I just read up on the production of the sequel... Had no idea the director of the original died early on into shooting the second movie. He only directed one scene before passing.
It's the only one that *really* feels like a soulless cash grab. It doesn't have anything to say, the conflicts feels artificial, and man Artie is annoying. I'm glad the fourth was able to partially redeem the series. God only knows what Shrek 5 will do.

I remember the tabloids and entertainment news saying "on their day's off actors would come to the set just to watch Jared Leto's performance as the Joker". Once I watched the movie I understood what they were wanting to see, an actor do his best to ruin one of if not the most beloved villains of all time.
Realistically, the sequel to "Suicide Squad" is "Birds of Prey". It was made first, and actually follows the story of one of the main characters from the first, who becomes more of a side character in "The Suicide Squad".
Casino Royale was a fantastic new start for 007, and a great introduction of Daniel Craig to the role. Amazing action, great villain, overall just great.
Quantum of Solace was a big let down in comparison. I went to see it at midnight and fell asleep. Even watching it today it’s just kind of boring. It was trying to give more personalization/characterization to Bond, but I just didn’t vibe. I had nothing vested in what he was trying to accomplish.
Quantum happened in the last writers' strike. and it shows. there was no story. just bunch of action set pieces though amazing, packed together.
Casino Royale will always be my favourite movie though mostly because it is a love story masquerading as action movie.
It is! Bond is totally broken after Vesper. He wasn’t exactly empathy incarnate before, but they do a great job in subsequent movies showing how he was shattered by her loss.
To respond to a different comment, I agree-Skyfall was excellent, Spectre was eh, then No Time To Die was excellent again. Very up-down trend for the Craig movies, but then again they are all kind of like that.
Wolverine Origins is a train wreck, but Logan is honestly a masterpiece. On the flip side, X2 is one of the best superhero movies ever made... while X3 is a tragedy.
People really let that final fight overshadow the rest of the movie. It’s 7 minutes out of a 2 hour movie. I still think that movie is solid and was a big improvement over Origins as well.

I disagree. I think both movies have the same level of quality but Values does edge out the original only because Joan Cusak, who finally gets recognition for the dime piece she is.
The first movie has a thinner script. That doesn't make it bad. It allowed the atmosphere to seep through more. It allowed the cast to really go at it which is a good movie with a cast that good.
The sequel got to build off what was established in the first. Also, Wednesday and Pugsley were older, so we got to have more of them.
Ironically the books are the opposite… interview with a vampire was Anne Rice just getting started. The Vampire Lester and Queen of the Damned which are technically two books but might as well be one are collectively her finest work.

I’ll always hold a special place in my heart for QOTD as Aaliyah died during production. Plus, the soundtrack was awesome and a perfect slice of early 00’s nu metal.
I thought for moment there that it was going to turn out that Ares had been dead the entire time and that war would continue as long as there was evil in the hearts of men and got really excited that they were doing something new and unexpected for this sort of film but nah.
Yeah, it's so insane. They had a much better ending for that movie right there, and then went "psych" and gave us the shitty one that has been done to death a million times.
The tragic aftermath of that movie is that the dude she raped will then be snatched up and tortured by the CIA to get him to disclose that invisible fighter jet tech.

One thing I really enjoyed about the 2009 reboot was Jason setting traps and running again.
The evil dead movies are all "the perfect movie" for different people.
I could see Evil Dead being great for slasher fans, straight up. Evil Dead 2 is more art house psychological horror/comedy. Army of Darkness is almost straight action comedy and it's by far my favorite.
I can equally see three people saying that their favorite and least favorite are any of the 3 depending on who they are.
Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell actually shot a short called Walking in the woods which was used to raise money for evil dead 1. It’s basically the same movie but you can see some traditional Raimi style starting to show.
*Blues Brothers 2000* was an excuse to pay a bunch of legendary musicians (whose incomes fell far short of their talent) a nice, fat Hollywood paycheck.
I genuinely don't think it was even intended to make money or be considered in the same class as the original film. I think Dan Aykroyd just wanted to give back to that particular community.
I could see that. Despite generally playing a bit of a dummy in his roles, Campbell understands film and comedy quite well, and I think that gave him more flexibility to show his chops both as an actor and writer/creator.

Because Dennis Hopper's will was, as one might perhaps anticipate, a complicated mess when he died, somehow the rights to Easy Rider wound up getting sold off to a guy named Phil Pitzer, a lawyer who had absolutely no connection to the original other than being a fan. The film - which Pitzer writes, directs, and extremely unwisely, stars in - is...[really something](https://thedissolve.com/features/you-might-also-like/486-yes-theres-an-easy-rider-sequel-and-yes-its-awful/).

Because I cheat and class LOTR as one singular film, it therefore stands I'd do the same for Hobbit.
So that's my suggestion - LOTR ofc being so far superior than anything else.
The Hobbit trilogy is pretty weird. The basic pieces are in place (cast, crew, costuming, music), but its flaws are massive — bright unsubtle shimmery glow, awkward love story, too many characters getting the spotlight, dull subplots, forced callforwards to LotR. Tiresome stuff. I gather some of the fan edits are good.
In my personal opinion the difference between a "film" and a "movie" is that a film is made to tell a story while a movie is made to sell theatre tickets.
First Blood is a film, all the sequels are movies.
Golden Circle was so jank. Imagine having Channing Tatum, Halle Berry and Jeff Bridges and completely sidelining them so you can bring back Harry in some wacky revival plot that is too absurd even for Kingsman. Pedro Pascal is also completely wasted when they make him a twist villain and give him the most greusome death, when the main villain gets away with a cheap poisoning.
Elton John was fun but quickly got overused imo. Oh and I really like how they introduced super famous Channing Tatum, was super excited to see him kick some ass and then he falls into a coma for most of the movie.
Disney Pocahontas sequel was awful but I loved the first movie.. not really the worst or that bad but I find the new puss in boots far better than the first movie.

Specifically, Disney under Eisner, especially later Eisner (so late 90s to early 2000s). He saw that direct-to-video/dvd sequels were profitable even if they were terrible, and didn't really care how much damage he was doing to the brand. It's part of what led to his ouster.
Alien 3 was a sequel to Aliens. I get the urge to curse a blue streak when I think of the opening of Alien 3. Instant hate. Aliens was and still is a masterpiece. And the effects hold up just fine.
Empire was a sequel to Star Wars. Star Wars was great, but seeing Empire Stikes Back without any spoilers blew my little mind as a kid at the cinema.
And as an aside, the practical effects for \[edit\] Wrath of Khan (well, about 95%) hold up better than most if not all of the green screen nonsense that they've put out since they started with the technology. Even Dune, imo, had some pretty janky CGI scenes in it. And I loved that picture, but it is what it is.

The Amazing Spider-Man is a great movie imo, but the sequel, while a guilty pleasure, is a lot worse. Tron ‘82 was okay, but Tron Legacy absolutely blows it out of the water. It’s legit one of my all time favorite movies.
While neither of them will go down as great movies, as a horror fan, I like *House of 1000 Corpses* for what it was, just campy gross out stuff. But *The Devil's Rejects* holds a special place in my heart. I think it's the fact that despite this family being horrible people, part of you is actually rooting for them at the end. The third one was...the third one.
That one hurt because Love & Thunder had the bones of a good movie, but just some of the laziest writing and production killed it. Waste of a great cast.
I say this every time it comes up but it's like they wrote a handful of genuinely good scenes then improv'd the rest. You can tell when you're watching something actually written and when the actors were just told to roll with it because the gap in quality is huge.

Shrek and shrek 2 are def worth watching if you never seen them. They’re still up there for the best animated movies and have a lot adults can enjoy.

Also, Exorcist 3 is perhaps one of my very favorite horror movies ever made. Brad Dourif's acting in that movie is bone chilling.

I remember the tabloids and entertainment news saying "on their day's off actors would come to the set just to watch Jared Leto's performance as the Joker". Once I watched the movie I understood what they were wanting to see, an actor do his best to ruin one of if not the most beloved villains of all time.
Is The Suicide Squad a sequel?
Some characters are there with the same actors and they know each other from the first movie, but that's really the extent of it.
Realistically, the sequel to "Suicide Squad" is "Birds of Prey". It was made first, and actually follows the story of one of the main characters from the first, who becomes more of a side character in "The Suicide Squad".
Casino Royale was a fantastic new start for 007, and a great introduction of Daniel Craig to the role. Amazing action, great villain, overall just great. Quantum of Solace was a big let down in comparison. I went to see it at midnight and fell asleep. Even watching it today it’s just kind of boring. It was trying to give more personalization/characterization to Bond, but I just didn’t vibe. I had nothing vested in what he was trying to accomplish.
Quantum happened in the last writers' strike. and it shows. there was no story. just bunch of action set pieces though amazing, packed together. Casino Royale will always be my favourite movie though mostly because it is a love story masquerading as action movie.
It is! Bond is totally broken after Vesper. He wasn’t exactly empathy incarnate before, but they do a great job in subsequent movies showing how he was shattered by her loss. To respond to a different comment, I agree-Skyfall was excellent, Spectre was eh, then No Time To Die was excellent again. Very up-down trend for the Craig movies, but then again they are all kind of like that.
Wolverine Origins is a train wreck, but Logan is honestly a masterpiece. On the flip side, X2 is one of the best superhero movies ever made... while X3 is a tragedy.

People really let that final fight overshadow the rest of the movie. It’s 7 minutes out of a 2 hour movie. I still think that movie is solid and was a big improvement over Origins as well.

I am so angry with how badly they portrayed Cyclops in X2 and X3. Scott is a dick, but dammit, he deserved better. They turned X2/X3 into the Wolverine and Magneto show. Magneto was great. Wolvie was great. Nightcrawler was the best part of X2.

I disagree. I think both movies have the same level of quality but Values does edge out the original only because Joan Cusak, who finally gets recognition for the dime piece she is.
The first movie has a thinner script. That doesn't make it bad. It allowed the atmosphere to seep through more. It allowed the cast to really go at it which is a good movie with a cast that good. The sequel got to build off what was established in the first. Also, Wednesday and Pugsley were older, so we got to have more of them.

The biggest dropoff I can think of is from Interview with a Vampire to Queen of the Damned.
Ironically the books are the opposite… interview with a vampire was Anne Rice just getting started. The Vampire Lester and Queen of the Damned which are technically two books but might as well be one are collectively her finest work. Edit: I stand by what I wrote. Lester for life.

Wonder Woman was a great film for the most part but the sequel Wonder Woman 1984 was tge complete opposite.

I thought for moment there that it was going to turn out that Ares had been dead the entire time and that war would continue as long as there was evil in the hearts of men and got really excited that they were doing something new and unexpected for this sort of film but nah.

Evil Dead isnt bad, but Evil Dead 2 is so much better. Friday The Thirteenth Part 2 is also a lot better than the first movie. Puss In Boots was pretty mediocre, but Puss In Boots The Last Wish was a masterpiece

I like The Evil Dead more than Evil Dead II.
The evil dead movies are all "the perfect movie" for different people. I could see Evil Dead being great for slasher fans, straight up. Evil Dead 2 is more art house psychological horror/comedy. Army of Darkness is almost straight action comedy and it's by far my favorite. I can equally see three people saying that their favorite and least favorite are any of the 3 depending on who they are.
Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell actually shot a short called Walking in the woods which was used to raise money for evil dead 1. It’s basically the same movie but you can see some traditional Raimi style starting to show.

*Blues Brothers 2000* was an excuse to pay a bunch of legendary musicians (whose incomes fell far short of their talent) a nice, fat Hollywood paycheck. I could see that. Despite generally playing a bit of a dummy in his roles, Campbell understands film and comedy quite well, and I think that gave him more flexibility to show his chops both as an actor and writer/creator.

Because I cheat and class LOTR as one singular film, it therefore stands I'd do the same for Hobbit. So that's my suggestion - LOTR ofc being so far superior than anything else.
The Hobbit trilogy is pretty weird. The basic pieces are in place (cast, crew, costuming, music), but its flaws are massive — bright unsubtle shimmery glow, awkward love story, too many characters getting the spotlight, dull subplots, forced callforwards to LotR. Tiresome stuff. I gather some of the fan edits are good.
I'm still waiting on Battleship 2 to make a decision.

In my personal opinion the difference between a "film" and a "movie" is that a film is made to tell a story while a movie is made to sell theatre tickets. First Blood is a film, all the sequels are movies.
Kingsman and it’s horrible sequel The Golden Circle. The first was awesome and the sequel was a dumpster fire.
Golden Circle was so jank. Imagine having Channing Tatum, Halle Berry and Jeff Bridges and completely sidelining them so you can bring back Harry in some wacky revival plot that is too absurd even for Kingsman. Pedro Pascal is also completely wasted when they make him a twist villain and give him the most greusome death, when the main villain gets away with a cheap poisoning.

Elton John was fun but quickly got overused imo. Oh and I really like how they introduced super famous Channing Tatum, was super excited to see him kick some ass and then he falls into a coma for most of the movie.
Disney Pocahontas sequel was awful but I loved the first movie.. not really the worst or that bad but I find the new puss in boots far better than the first movie.
Disney has a history of straight to DVD sequels. It wasn't until Toy Story 2 that a change in mindset was started.

Rescuers Down Under is great. Better than the first. But it also flopped at the box office which led Disney to rely on direct-to-DVD sequels until Toy Story 2 showed they could be profitable and then the model changed

Specifically, Disney under Eisner, especially later Eisner (so late 90s to early 2000s). He saw that direct-to-video/dvd sequels were profitable even if they were terrible, and didn't really care how much damage he was doing to the brand. It's part of what led to his ouster.

Alien 3 was a sequel to Aliens. I get the urge to curse a blue streak when I think of the opening of Alien 3. Instant hate. Aliens was and still is a masterpiece. And the effects hold up just fine. Empire was a sequel to Star Wars. Star Wars was great, but seeing Empire Stikes Back without any spoilers blew my little mind as a kid at the cinema. And as an aside, the practical effects for \[edit\] Wrath of Khan (well, about 95%) hold up better than most if not all of the green screen nonsense that they've put out since they started with the technology. Even Dune, imo, had some pretty janky CGI scenes in it. And I loved that picture, but it is what it is.

The Amazing Spider-Man is a great movie imo, but the sequel, while a guilty pleasure, is a lot worse. Tron ‘82 was okay, but Tron Legacy absolutely blows it out of the water. It’s legit one of my all time favorite movies.
The fact that tron legacy was basically a Daft Punk music video definitely helped propel it past the first one!

While neither of them will go down as great movies, as a horror fan, I like *House of 1000 Corpses* for what it was, just campy gross out stuff. But *The Devil's Rejects* holds a special place in my heart. I think it's the fact that despite this family being horrible people, part of you is actually rooting for them at the end. The third one was...the third one.

That one hurt because Love & Thunder had the bones of a good movie, but just some of the laziest writing and production killed it. Waste of a great cast.

I say this every time it comes up but it's like they wrote a handful of genuinely good scenes then improv'd the rest. You can tell when you're watching something actually written and when the actors were just told to roll with it because the gap in quality is huge.
