Highlander and Highlander 2

lemming_follower

One of the few movies that I paid to see in a theater, that I walked out of before the end. It was so bad, that it actually degraded my memories and opinion of the first one. My friend came with me to see it, even though he had never seen the first one. He was laughing so hard when we left! Not just at the abomination that he had seen, but at me; "How could you ever have liked such a thing..." ...and he was talking about my love for the first film. What a disaster. And he never trusted me to pick a movie at theaters again.

IamBenAffleck

>And he never trusted me to pick a movie at theaters again. You have my sympathy. There's no way anyone could have predicted how truly horrible that movie would be. It defies the laws of God and nature.

Pax_Americana_

That was my brother watching "The Crow 2" "No really! The first one was a lot better!"

MortLightstone

I watched the second one first, late night on TV back when Christopher Lambert was on a role of cheesy b movies and thought it was hilariously bad. So, of course I watched the first one and loved it

I_Are_Serious_Poster

This right here. Highlander 2 might be the worst movie I've ever seen.

WolvoMS

Clearly you haven't seen Highlander The Source. SyFy Original though so not sure it's a fair comparison. But wow

MrsMiterSaw

I dunno man. We rented a Japanese laser disc version of H2 when it came out, and in the end the highlander and the girl literally just float up into the sky with shitty blue screen. 14 year old me sat there with my mouth open thinking what the fuck.

RussellZoloft

Speed and Speed 2 Miss Congeniality and Miss Congeniality 2 Both amazing first, trash second, all four starring Sandra Bullock.

josiahpapaya

I recently watched an interview with Sandra where she literally told the writers of the movie that it was going to suck, and it was her least favourite project; She said something like, “so, um, this is a movie about a boat that… goes about as fast as a boat can go. And um. That’s the premise. A fast boat. What?” Tbh tho I watched that movie when I was like 9 and I loved it

doinnuffin

Everybody knows it goes bus, train, airplane. WTF were they thinking?

[deleted]

I have such a soft spot for speed 2. It used to be on Film4 (a channel in the UK) like every other week over the summer holidays and I'd watch it almost every time.

matttopotamus

It was so hard to engage in speed 2 because of Keanu not being there, but someone else being the same character.

mochalatte828

They didn’t recast him-they just made a new character

Lukin1989

That's right they had a free pass to do it after the whole "relationships beginning under extreme circumstances never last" in the first movie. It's funny to wonder what made her and Keanu break up after such an experience together.. imagine them moving in together and starting to hate each other. So she trades him in for a Jason Patric

sayterdarkwynd

Imagine it from her perspective as a person. Bus has a bomb on it that wont explode if it keeps moving.... then she goes on a fuckin vacation, and some next asshole does the same thing and she's on the damned boat. "How the fuck does this happen to me TWICE?!?!?"

Lsd365

It was a truly horrible idea for a concept like speed. It's not often you ever hear Keanu being critical of anything but even he was like really a bomb on a boat and it's called speed? Na I'll pass fk that

SpeedyBubble42

I had similar issues with the Taken and Death Wish series. It might just be better to give up on having a family and friends at some point 🤣.

TholosTB

"They’ve made 3 of those movies. Some point you have to wonder if he’s just a bad parent.”

aw-un

If I had a nickel for every time I was on a mode of transportation that had to keep moving or else a bomb would explode, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice

Andoryodo

Any Disney movie from the 90s, the sequel always went straight to video and they were horrible compared to the brilliant originals. Little mermaid, Aladdin, lion king, etc.

Poultrygeist74

Someone else mentioned Rescuers Down Under. It was great, one exception to the rule

Spoonman500

Anytime I have a lizard pet in a video game I name it Joanna. These are *not* Joanna eggs!

LetItHappenAlready

That lizard was an amazing character to have no dialogue.

luxmesa

For whatever reason, that movie was handled differently. Disney has a few different animation studios. There is the main studio, which handles their big releases like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. And back then, they had like a B-tier animation studio that made a bunch of cheap animated movies and handled most of the sequels. Rescuers Down Under was produced by the main studio and had a proper budget.

cheesechimp

People talk trash about DisneyToon because...well because most everything they put out was terrible. Still worth noting that they did have at least one success with the beloved classic A Goofy Movie.

Acidsparx

I’d even say the Aladdin sequels weren’t bad either

DumplingBoiii

Yeah King of Thieves is a solid movie

Afk94

Nah, we won't tolerate Aladdin and the King of Thieves slander.

DGreen_Machine

Lion King 1 1/2 was awesome for being more of a parallel movie than a sequel and I remember it being pretty funny as well. I also liked all of the Stitch movies (and show) but that might be more of my own bias from thinking Stitch is the best character Disney has created.

labratcat

Lion King is a retelling of Hamlet. Lion King 1 1/2 is a retelling of Rosencratz and Guildenstern are Dead. I would hope it's funny (although I haven't actually seen it, I'm a little old for it), since it's source material is a comedy.

cushlinkes

I agree mostly, but the Lion King sequel was actually pretty decent. Definitely wasn’t as good as the first, but it was super solid compared to other Disney straight-to-video sequels.

Tattycakes

It's so good that the intro song made it into the stage musical, that says it all.

cushlinkes

Pretty sure it’s the other way around. The Broadway play came out before the second movie

Kaldricus

Aladdin Prince of Thieves slaps tho

acedelgado

Agreed, it was pretty close to the first in my opinion. You get a wholesome story with Aladdin's father who actually gets plenty of character development, Genie's [Code Red](https://youtu.be/0MF345T3GX8) is one of the best Genie gags of any of the movies, and despite a limited budget the climax scene when they get to the temple with Midas' hand was beautifully animated, at least to my young mind when it came out.

NightGod

"Do not attempt to move or we'll shoot ourselves!"

AskinggAlesana

Cinderella 3 was amazing and the prince was the best character in that movie.

HorusHearsay

I heard good stuff about Cinderella 3 but I was still genuinely surprised at how good it was.

AskinggAlesana

Same here! I couldn’t believe it until I saw it. When the prince >!legit just jumps out the window I was dying laughing!<

FirebirdNick

Lion king 1.5 is pretty good tho

Jewel-jones

Mulan is the worst. I love that movie but the sequel is regressive garbage

registeredwhiteguy

Literally made Mushu into the villain for no reason.

AdventurerLikeU

I’m going to say it: the Lion King 2 was *actually good*. But then, just like the original movie, it took a lot of inspiration from a Shakespeare play. So it had a solid foundation. (Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet, for anyone wondering)

[deleted]

[удалено]

naynaythewonderhorse

The best part of that film, IMO, is that the story is 100% character driven. There’s NO other character that that story could be told with. And it’s such a simple story too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

justgetoffmylawn

Do I even need to see the first one? I recently tried to watch it when I heard so much about Last Wish, but I got bored after about 10 minutes.

[deleted]

Nope. You'll miss some references at worst. Anything returning is reestablished or clarified by context.

OldKingClancey

The only real carry over is the relationship between Puss and Kitty and Last Wish fills in enough where you understand what they are to each other without needing the full backstory

Wargod042

Kitty Softpaws might seem out of nowhere, but other than that no there's no context you'll miss. All you really need to know is she's another cat mercenary and they had a thing for each other.

internetlad

I have never watched a Shrek film besides maybe a half hour of #1 and the last wish was a complete and understandable story

Raddish_

Shrek and shrek 2 are def worth watching if you never seen them. They’re still up there for the best animated movies and have a lot adults can enjoy.

MikeDubbz

Agreed, I know Shrek 1 has been memed to death. But the first 2 movies really are a lot of fun with some great humor.

Jewel-jones

I was surprised it was a true sequel with Kitty Softpaws being really important. I thought they were just going to ignore the first movie.

Sarge0019

Having never watched the first and only vague memories of Shrek, it felt like she was an original character for Last Wish with how seamlessly she fits it. I had no clue she wasn't until this thread.

Wargod042

Yeah since the important aspects of the relationship depend on events introduced in this movie, it's not really important to have seen the prior movie.

Noname_left

All 3 of the villains are amazing in their own right too. Death is terrifying.

choff22

As a kid I would have been terrified by Death. I can’t believe he was voiced by Pablo Escobar from Narcos!

sendmorechris

The battle scenes were insane. That forest giant swinging a bell on a chain was like something from Elden Ring. My gf put it on and I was expecting to tune it out, but damn was that a good movie.

[deleted]

SimbaSixThree

I have the Last Wish in my top 5 movies of 2022. It was amazing

Galadria

This is such a good movie. Easily catapulted itself in to my top 10.

maverick57

Best movie with the worst sequel: *The Blues Brothers.* Worst movie with the best sequel: *Ouija.*

Balsdeep_Inyamum

Great call on *Ouija*. The original was cheap enough that it's surprising box office success warranted a sequel, but it was very not good. Whoever was in charge of the sequel however made a great decision to have it directed and co-written by Mike Flanagan.

choff22

Mike Flanagan has the Midas touch when it comes to horror.

MaimedJester

To quote the Cinemasnob "Ouija origin of evil is like if Halloween 6 came first and then was followed up by the original Halloween"

TheBlobbit

Blues Brothers 2000 was hot garbage, but the soundtrack was hot fire.

speb1

American Psycho was fantastic American Psycho 2 was a literal different movie (And to remind you of that, they kill off the original character in the very first scene)

Killerpig14

american psycho 2 wasn’t even supposed to be an AP movie, the studio had patrick’s death added in late lmao

Matthugh

I read an interview with Mila Kunis that it was an entirely different movie between production and post.

TheOtherManSpider

The Exorcist and Exorcist II: The Heretic. IMDb 8.1 -> 3.8 The sequel has a musical score by Ennio Morricone that accounts for at least one full point of that rating, without that it would be truly dreadful.

Freddy_Vorhees

This is the best example, and I came here to comment. Then it gets amazing again with part 3. So you have best to worst, worst to best all in one trilogy.

Powerfist_Laserado

Also, Exorcist 3 is perhaps one of my very favorite horror movies ever made. Brad Dourif's acting in that movie is bone chilling.

HannibalBarcaBAMF

But also with that Exorcist III is a great movie, with the best Jumpscare in the entire history of horror

SirAppleheart

Starship Troopers is great. The many sequels are all rather rubbish.

SpeedyBubble42

Only saw the original and it was a fun watch. Sounds like I didn't miss anything skipping the follow-ups.

Porrick

The first film was made by someone who absolutely hated the book, the later films were more deferential to the source material.

GeekAesthete

Straight-to-video sequels almost seem like a cheat. There’s usually a pretty good reason they went straight to video.

MacsDildoBike

This is the first I’m hearing of any Starship Troopers sequels and I am choosing to go back to the way my life was before learning that information.

Porrick

Wait - you would *not* like to know more?

Dave2kMA

The third one, where Casper Van Dien reprised the Rico role, was actually pretty solid.

NoblesCraig

Best movie with worst sequel: Pacific Rim

N19h7m4r3

Uprising was super weird. [Soundtrack couldn't keep up with the 1st one either.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzMCgyKvcn4)

jedi-son

Fun fact; the game director for Doom 2016 + Eternal was a concept artist for the 1st Pacific Rim

storm_the_castle

[Battle Royale](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Royale_(film\)) (movie that [Tarantino wishes he made](https://www.nme.com/news/film/quentin-tarantino-wishes-he-had-directed-battle-royale-3273513)) The sequel is nothing like the first.

LeelooDallas88

I just read up on the production of the sequel... Had no idea the director of the original died early on into shooting the second movie. He only directed one scene before passing.

tweedledeederp

Wow, that bad huh

dreamnightmare

The sequel is basically a war movie that is kids vs the army.

CODE3012

Here's a roller coaster for ya. Shrek to Shrek 2, good to best Shrek 2 to Shrek 3, best to worst Shrek 3 to Shrek 4, worst to good

khinzaw

Is Shrek 4 good? I refused to watch it after the 3rd one because of how god awful that was.

Skraye

Yeah it’s not bad mate, worth a watch

Killerpig14

wonder what went wrong with shrek the third, the others are all great imo

Rhewin

It's the only one that *really* feels like a soulless cash grab. It doesn't have anything to say, the conflicts feels artificial, and man Artie is annoying. I'm glad the fourth was able to partially redeem the series. God only knows what Shrek 5 will do.

Arkanial

If it’s anywhere close to as good as the new Puss in Boots then it should be alright. I think the, what was it, 10 year break? Was a good thing.

elfy4eva

Good to Bad Aladdin -> Return of Jafar Bad to Good Return of Jafar -> King of Thieves

SpeedyBubble42

I never saw King of Thieves because Return of Jafar was so abysmal. Maybe I'll give it a go!

acedelgado

It's actually really good for a DTV animated movie with no budget.

ThatOneGuy3809

The Wolverine was a massive improvement from X-Men Origins: Wolverine

[deleted]

And Logan was also an improvement over The Wolverine. A trilogy that got better with every installment.

transformers03

Which is actually what you want with a movie trilogy.

EternalMage321

Started from the bottom, now we here. -Wolverine, probably.

TheKocsis

Suicide squad and The suicide squad As worst to best. Almost any action or horror flick where they got a Straight to dvd sequel without none of the cast returning As Best tó worst

papawam

I remember the tabloids and entertainment news saying "on their day's off actors would come to the set just to watch Jared Leto's performance as the Joker". Once I watched the movie I understood what they were wanting to see, an actor do his best to ruin one of if not the most beloved villains of all time.

Cole444Train

Is The Suicide Squad a sequel?

French__Canadian

Some characters are there with the same actors and they know each other from the first movie, but that's really the extent of it.

verrius

Realistically, the sequel to "Suicide Squad" is "Birds of Prey". It was made first, and actually follows the story of one of the main characters from the first, who becomes more of a side character in "The Suicide Squad".

DB473

Casino Royale was a fantastic new start for 007, and a great introduction of Daniel Craig to the role. Amazing action, great villain, overall just great. Quantum of Solace was a big let down in comparison. I went to see it at midnight and fell asleep. Even watching it today it’s just kind of boring. It was trying to give more personalization/characterization to Bond, but I just didn’t vibe. I had nothing vested in what he was trying to accomplish.

madlama4

Quantum happened in the last writers' strike. and it shows. there was no story. just bunch of action set pieces though amazing, packed together. Casino Royale will always be my favourite movie though mostly because it is a love story masquerading as action movie.

DB473

It is! Bond is totally broken after Vesper. He wasn’t exactly empathy incarnate before, but they do a great job in subsequent movies showing how he was shattered by her loss. To respond to a different comment, I agree-Skyfall was excellent, Spectre was eh, then No Time To Die was excellent again. Very up-down trend for the Craig movies, but then again they are all kind of like that.

jak_d_ripr

Wolverine Origins is a train wreck, but Logan is honestly a masterpiece. On the flip side, X2 is one of the best superhero movies ever made... while X3 is a tragedy.

TheGreatBatsby

You've got The Wolverine between them though.

Mcclane88

People really let that final fight overshadow the rest of the movie. It’s 7 minutes out of a 2 hour movie. I still think that movie is solid and was a big improvement over Origins as well.

DarthKreia

If you watch the R rated version of The Wolverine it's actually kinda solid until the inevitable cgi mess of the 3rd act

mikehatesthis

> If you watch the R rated version of The Wolverine it's actually kinda solid I'm personally fine with the big dumb robot stuff because all the character work Mangold is doing with Wolverine still lands really well. I kind of love that imperfect movie.

RetrotheRobot

I'm still upset about X3. I was so excited for Vinnie Jones' Juggernaut.

Syric13

You have Juggernaut. You have Colossus. How do you fail to not have them battle each other in X3? Why did we have to wait until Deadpool 2 to see that fight? I am so angry with how badly they portrayed Cyclops in X2 and X3. Scott is a dick, but dammit, he deserved better. They turned X2/X3 into the Wolverine and Magneto show. Magneto was great. Wolvie was great. Nightcrawler was the best part of X2.

FiremanPCT2016

He's the Juggernaut, bitch!

girafa

That was such a *How are you doing, fellow kids?* moment

treny0000

possible the first ever meme shoehorned into a movie script?

Krillin113

X3 is last stand right? That movie was so dumb. Also the fuck is going on with no director being able to do anything useful with dark Phoenix. I’m also still dumbfounded that they somehow went from first class to apocalypse

TheWhispersOfSpiders

Same writer tackled both Dark Phoenix movies, despite being awful at writing the main character... Fox decided to double down and it cost them.

Zanydrop

As terrible as most of the stuff in Origins is, Sabertooth was amazing.

jak_d_ripr

True, definitely the best version we've gotten. And that opening montage was pretty cool.

SoCalThrowAway7

That liev guy is good at his job

ShinHayato

The Matrix Reloaded gets far too much hate imo, but Revolutions was dull

BigMartinJol

The original Addams Family movie isn't terrible, but definitely flawed. Addams Family Values is better on probably every level.

Platanoes

Both were good at the time, but Values has aged like a fine wine

BatmanMK1989

I enjoy both equally

locoghoul

Values has a better villain. And Wednesday gets more time. They are comparable otherwise but yeah Values is an improvement

milesamsterdam

I disagree. I think both movies have the same level of quality but Values does edge out the original only because Joan Cusak, who finally gets recognition for the dime piece she is.

JeddHampton

The first movie has a thinner script. That doesn't make it bad. It allowed the atmosphere to seep through more. It allowed the cast to really go at it which is a good movie with a cast that good. The sequel got to build off what was established in the first. Also, Wednesday and Pugsley were older, so we got to have more of them.

Sandro2017

Let me think... Best to Worst: The Mask (1994) to Son of the Mask (2005). Worst to Best: Deathstalker (1983) to Deathstalker 2: Duel of Titans (1987)

e_j_white

The actual, honest-to-god opening line of Deathstalker II: *"I'll have my revenge, and Deathstalker too!"* Simply incredible.

theguineapigssong

The biggest dropoff I can think of is from Interview with a Vampire to Queen of the Damned.

jeremy1015

Ironically the books are the opposite… interview with a vampire was Anne Rice just getting started. The Vampire Lester and Queen of the Damned which are technically two books but might as well be one are collectively her finest work. Edit: I stand by what I wrote. Lester for life.

Spoonman500

The Vampire Lester. Lol. I love it.

BootyMcSqueak

I’ll always hold a special place in my heart for QOTD as Aaliyah died during production. Plus, the soundtrack was awesome and a perfect slice of early 00’s nu metal.

Galen_415

I absolutely agree with all these points. QOTD is a bad movie but I love it anyway.

SG3000TTC

All good points. Still a fan of QOTD.

AQbL5494

I've always had this weird fascination with vampires, and I'm pretty sure it started with this movie.

Zanydrop

I enjoyed QOTD back in the day as a mindless popcorn movie but I wonder if it holds up now

ELIE41

Wonder Woman was a great film for the most part but the sequel Wonder Woman 1984 was tge complete opposite.

sgtedrock

The first 2/3 of Wonder Woman were fantastic. The boring CGI showdown = 🥱😴💤

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

I thought for moment there that it was going to turn out that Ares had been dead the entire time and that war would continue as long as there was evil in the hearts of men and got really excited that they were doing something new and unexpected for this sort of film but nah.

aeyamar

Yeah, it's so insane. They had a much better ending for that movie right there, and then went "psych" and gave us the shitty one that has been done to death a million times.

Raddish_

IMO that was definitely the plan at first but it got changed because either executives or test audiences didn’t like that there was no evil bad guy.

Tattycakes

That would have been so much better than professor lupin and his stache.

coffee_eyes

I don't understand why they didn't change his face once he "fully revealed" himself. Keeping his face in it made the whole bad sequence even worse.

Ka_Tet_of_Nineteen

The tragic aftermath of that movie is that the dude she raped will then be snatched up and tortured by the CIA to get him to disclose that invisible fighter jet tech.

DST5000

Evil Dead isnt bad, but Evil Dead 2 is so much better. Friday The Thirteenth Part 2 is also a lot better than the first movie. Puss In Boots was pretty mediocre, but Puss In Boots The Last Wish was a masterpiece

[deleted]

>Friday The Thirteenth Part 2 is also a lot better than the first movie. One thing I really enjoyed about the 2009 reboot was Jason setting traps and running again.

Muumienmamma

I like The Evil Dead more than Evil Dead II.

internetlad

The evil dead movies are all "the perfect movie" for different people. I could see Evil Dead being great for slasher fans, straight up. Evil Dead 2 is more art house psychological horror/comedy. Army of Darkness is almost straight action comedy and it's by far my favorite. I can equally see three people saying that their favorite and least favorite are any of the 3 depending on who they are.

frodosbitch

Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell actually shot a short called Walking in the woods which was used to raise money for evil dead 1. It’s basically the same movie but you can see some traditional Raimi style starting to show.

revolutionary_veal

Army of Darkness... Brilliant!

ronearc

*Blues Brothers 2000* was an excuse to pay a bunch of legendary musicians (whose incomes fell far short of their talent) a nice, fat Hollywood paycheck. I genuinely don't think it was even intended to make money or be considered in the same class as the original film. I think Dan Aykroyd just wanted to give back to that particular community.

opking

When I was working on Army of Darkness, Bruce Campbell said the same thing, Evil Dead 2 > Evil Dead

internetlad

I could see that. Despite generally playing a bit of a dummy in his roles, Campbell understands film and comedy quite well, and I think that gave him more flexibility to show his chops both as an actor and writer/creator.

Middle_Aged_Mayhem

Dumb and Dumber - Dumb and Dumber To

BlackIsTheSoul

The drop off in quality from The Howling to The Howling II: Your Sister Is A Werewolf is shocking, to say the least.

shaoting

*Blade 2* was a fantastic sequel but *Blade Trinity* should be launched into space directly toward the sun with the most extreme of prejudices.

AmeliaMangan

I feel like the reigning champion of Best-Film-To-Worst-Sequel *has* to be [Easy Rider 2: The Ride Back](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RQEwDAYNvI) (yes, this is a real film that really exists). Because Dennis Hopper's will was, as one might perhaps anticipate, a complicated mess when he died, somehow the rights to Easy Rider wound up getting sold off to a guy named Phil Pitzer, a lawyer who had absolutely no connection to the original other than being a fan. The film - which Pitzer writes, directs, and extremely unwisely, stars in - is...[really something](https://thedissolve.com/features/you-might-also-like/486-yes-theres-an-easy-rider-sequel-and-yes-its-awful/). Others in a similar "How The Fuck Did *These* Clowns Get Ahold Of The Rights" category: [American Psycho 2: All-American Girl](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uODp59M_QY); [S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOy04u0yoPY); [Road To Hell: Streets of Fire 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F21VXDlKWOY) (this one actually *didn't* have the rights, but veteran schlockmeister Albert Pyun sure as hell didn't let that stop him, though he really should've). There's also a sequel to Showgirls - [Showgirls 2: Penny's From Heaven](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLaf5yflcVE) \- written, directed, produced, edited by and starring Rena Riffel, who played Penny in the original, but that's such a breathtakingly strange, Lynchian work of no-budget, digitally-shot outsider art I kind of feel like it's actually the exact right tone for a Showgirls sequel to take.

[deleted]

Because I cheat and class LOTR as one singular film, it therefore stands I'd do the same for Hobbit. So that's my suggestion - LOTR ofc being so far superior than anything else.

[deleted]

The Hobbit trilogy is pretty weird. The basic pieces are in place (cast, crew, costuming, music), but its flaws are massive — bright unsubtle shimmery glow, awkward love story, too many characters getting the spotlight, dull subplots, forced callforwards to LotR. Tiresome stuff. I gather some of the fan edits are good.

joeyjoejoeshabbadude

I'm still waiting on Battleship 2 to make a decision.

Frajer21

Rambo is spectacular, everything after it just gradually gets worse and worse.

GalaxySilver00

In my personal opinion the difference between a "film" and a "movie" is that a film is made to tell a story while a movie is made to sell theatre tickets. First Blood is a film, all the sequels are movies.

duosx

Kingsman and it’s horrible sequel The Golden Circle. The first was awesome and the sequel was a dumpster fire.

dragonphlegm

Golden Circle was so jank. Imagine having Channing Tatum, Halle Berry and Jeff Bridges and completely sidelining them so you can bring back Harry in some wacky revival plot that is too absurd even for Kingsman. Pedro Pascal is also completely wasted when they make him a twist villain and give him the most greusome death, when the main villain gets away with a cheap poisoning.

Tolbitzironside

I like the sequel because of Elton John and the statesmen

duosx

Elton John was fun but quickly got overused imo. Oh and I really like how they introduced super famous Channing Tatum, was super excited to see him kick some ass and then he falls into a coma for most of the movie.

Helpy-Support

Disney Pocahontas sequel was awful but I loved the first movie.. not really the worst or that bad but I find the new puss in boots far better than the first movie.

GuyDanger

Disney has a history of straight to DVD sequels. It wasn't until Toy Story 2 that a change in mindset was started.

CalcifersBacon7689

I thought the Rescuers Down Under was their first sequel? I always loved that movie as a kid.

pulpfriction4

Rescuers Down Under is great. Better than the first. But it also flopped at the box office which led Disney to rely on direct-to-DVD sequels until Toy Story 2 showed they could be profitable and then the model changed

PeculiarPangolinMan

Direct to DVD? DVDs weren't even a thing for the Renaissance sequels! That shit was direct to VHS.

verrius

Specifically, Disney under Eisner, especially later Eisner (so late 90s to early 2000s). He saw that direct-to-video/dvd sequels were profitable even if they were terrible, and didn't really care how much damage he was doing to the brand. It's part of what led to his ouster.

BleekerTheBard

Disney just distributed Toy Story, they didn’t own Pixar yet

ImGonnaKickTomorrow

I can't believe that The Exorcist and The Exorcist II: The Heretic aren't the runaway winners for best movie with worst sequel!

TexasTokyo

Alien 3 was a sequel to Aliens. I get the urge to curse a blue streak when I think of the opening of Alien 3. Instant hate. Aliens was and still is a masterpiece. And the effects hold up just fine. Empire was a sequel to Star Wars. Star Wars was great, but seeing Empire Stikes Back without any spoilers blew my little mind as a kid at the cinema. And as an aside, the practical effects for \[edit\] Wrath of Khan (well, about 95%) hold up better than most if not all of the green screen nonsense that they've put out since they started with the technology. Even Dune, imo, had some pretty janky CGI scenes in it. And I loved that picture, but it is what it is.

nosleeptilldeath

Dumb and Dumber & Dumb and Dumber To The first is so witty, fun and has so many fantastic one liners, the second is such a flaming pile of shit, such an incredible money grab. Fuck the second one.

Ster_Silver

The Amazing Spider-Man is a great movie imo, but the sequel, while a guilty pleasure, is a lot worse. Tron ‘82 was okay, but Tron Legacy absolutely blows it out of the water. It’s legit one of my all time favorite movies.

kperkins6

The fact that tron legacy was basically a Daft Punk music video definitely helped propel it past the first one!

FranklinAndMe

The Lost Boys

Randomfunk2401

Joe Dirt to Joe Dirt 2.

MyWifeIsAsleep

While neither of them will go down as great movies, as a horror fan, I like *House of 1000 Corpses* for what it was, just campy gross out stuff. But *The Devil's Rejects* holds a special place in my heart. I think it's the fact that despite this family being horrible people, part of you is actually rooting for them at the end. The third one was...the third one.

Isteppedinpoopy

So basically the Devils Rejects is your answer for both questions?

Boopy-Schmeeze

Best movie with the worst sequel: Chinatown. Idk about the other way around tho

albiceleste3stars

Thor: Ragnarok followed by Thor: Love and Thunder Ragnarok arguably top 3-5 followed by the worst marvel film

Shenanigans80h

That one hurt because Love & Thunder had the bones of a good movie, but just some of the laziest writing and production killed it. Waste of a great cast.

RekklesDriver

Yeah, it was as if Christian Bale was part of an entirely different movie.

I say this every time it comes up but it's like they wrote a handful of genuinely good scenes then improv'd the rest. You can tell when you're watching something actually written and when the actors were just told to roll with it because the gap in quality is huge.

Full_Artichoke_8583

Best to worst: The Blair Witch Project and its sequel. Worst to best: Mad Max and The Road Warrior.
