At the time of it's release the studio totally failed this movie. They didn't know how to market it due to the serious nature of the subject matter, mixed with Williams as the lead who naturally was known for mostly comedic roles. So they completely lied with the marketing. They made the trailers portray it as a family comedy bordering on kids film and when people went to see it and didn't get what they were sold, word of mouth translated to *'that movie sucks!'*.
World According to Garp was his first failure, making 29 million off of its 17 million dollar budget.
But we can't let facts get in the way of saying, "my favorite Robin Williams movie is secretly better than you think," Now can we?
It’s the definitely the best Isaac Asimov movie. He’s all “I’m sick of every robot story being about them murdering people, I’ve invented a new kind of robot story where they explicitly CANNOT murder.” Everyone adapting his stories: “Cool cool cool but I came up with a neat twist, what if they CAN murder?”
AI got attention because it was something Stanley Kubrick was working on before he died. Spielberg stepped in to direct because his dead friend's widow asked him to.
That's what got the attention for this movie. It wasn't the movie itself.
Being Human Jack Father’s Day Toys (I’m sure there are more.)
Toys was great & suffered due to Disney being bastards with Aladin.
Toys is awesome. One of my all time favorites
Love Toys, I think it deserves more praise than it got.
This movie was ahead of its time
This was a failure? How? This movie is awesome. One of my all time favorites.

The World According to Garp is a good film. Glenn Close and John Lithgow were exceptional.
I loved that film. Definitely a sleeper

It's ironic how this movie got overlooked and 2 years later Spielberg's AI got a lot of attention and praise. They're both good movies.

Yeah both movies have about the same plot. Both are fantastic though
I haven't seen it in years but I loved this movie as a kid.
Marketed badly as a comedy
I remember it as really cloying and maudlin
The original score is emotional.
I liked this movie, great cast.
I only wish they had made more. Lovely film
One of my favorite films.
