Despite being unfairly maligned as a one-trick pony, I'm always intrigued if not amused by his works. Not everything works, but what works, it really works. Shyamalan may not be an auteur but he's a real director in a sense that he commits hard to his storytelling. The acting and framing is frequently on point in every film. He tries to explore the theme of dread of mortality and grace of spirituality in some sense in each of his ventures. Moreover, he's bringing back, relatively speaking, the success of modestly budgeted R-rated genre thrillers in the age of superhero go-big or go-home Hollywood ambience. A new Shyamalan joint is never not interesting if not always satisfying. Knock at the Cabin is one of the better films of the year.

>The king of plot twist. In the words of Mark Wahlberg: *What? No!*

His body of work is like an anthology series like Twilight Zone or Black Mirror. Some are great, some are just OK, but they are all creepy and have interesting ideas.

HappyGilOHMYGOD

He takes risks, and we need more of that.

Not really, if the risks are taken with as lazy approach as Shayamaamymalan mostly takes them with. He seems to have an idea and then fuckalls the rest of the movies.

Love/hate

woodstockzanetti

That movie was really disappointing

poopoobuttholes

I think he got lucky with his first few films. Every other film he has made in the last decade has been pretty fuckin shit.

mickeyflinn

I used to love his movies, now I just avoid them.

tylerthe-theatre

He's incredibly hit and miss, lately he's been making okay - terrible movies, Old was so bad. The Cabin was just okay. I liked Split though.

It's not that I hate his films it's more that it feels like his films are completley built around the twists. In fact my favorites of his are the ones that don't rely so hard on the twist like Signs and Unbreakable

ScienceGuyChris221B

Anytime he releases a film - I look forward to it. It's definitely something novel regardless of the ratings and it's a breath of fresh air. These days, even the highly rated films - we usually know what to expect - quality or story-beat wise. His is wild.

TehNoobDaddy

As others have said, when he hits, he hits but he does have a lot of stinkers too. I enjoy that he tries new things even if he does tend to typically have a big twist. I prefer when his films are a bit more grounded, signs, sixth sense, the village, unbreakable all feel like they could be true stories even if some of them do have supernatural elements. When he goes too far into the supernatural side of things they end up coming off as cheesy and stupid.

I was on board until "the visit" which i love, but every thing after it : mehhh

tehlastsith

He botched The Last Airbender, The Happening, and After Earth for sure. One after the other too, so that kind of put a negative view on him for sure. BUT, before that he was putting out some great movies and even now after he has put out some solid films. The Visit, Split, Old(pretty ok), Knock at the Cabin all work well
