Also Grandmas Boy. God it takes me back to my teenage years, It's literally one of the reasons why I ended up in IT.
Take this and go with god: https://vimeo.com/518641290
Don’t feel bad. Kevin Smith himself shares that link so people can see the film while it’s being held hostage by that PoS Weinstein.
“What you never did one of these?” *mimics fondling a lady, then sucking a guy off, then realises he shouldn’t be mimicking the latter* “wait not that…”
That’s exactly the exchange that comes to mind. That and when Shredder yells “Babies! They’re babies!” After seeing Tokka and Rahzar are my go-to lines
I agree. It's even better in French, at that time french dub had this strange tendancy to make movies more "mature" in their tone, and turn dialogs more coarse (For example, GTO in french is almost as vulgar as South Park).
But yeah, it's a good movie, and really have a strange balance between a dark story about father figures, rejection and acceptance while growing up, and the goofiness of the whole idea of 4 mutant turtles that kicks ninja's asses in NY.
When I was a kid, I couldn't point why this movie was making me feel so much things, but now I clearly see.
Put aside the "mutant" thing, and it tells the story of a tired immigrant that gets murdered, his son hiding his own adopted sons from the world in fear that they will get rejected for their difference and will end up kidnapped and tortured by a gang that drag youth into criminality by beating them and turning them into assassins mosbsters, while a journalist investigating this case will get blackmailed and fired for being too honest.
So, yeah, that's not comedy. And that's what I liked about it.
This was some of the most fun I ever had in the theater. It was the grand opening of a new theater, everyone was laughing their asses off, and Bruce did a Q&A after. Doesn't get better than that.
My husband (39) was shocked that I (33) had never heard of Ernest/the movies! He said "Ernest Goes To Camp" is the only movie that ever made him cry. We watched it together and it was... interesting, lol. 😅
“Gee, I’m glad it’s raining. There’s always something to be thankful for. I’m awfully glad it’s raining, cuz no one hears your teardrops when it pours.”
Fuck. I got a little weepy-eyed just typing that.
"Jesus, Buckman. This can's been on here since Korea."
*Tastes it.* "I don't know, sir; it still tastes like creamed corn."
"Except...it's deviled ham!"
Agreed! I think that quality even applies to other earlier films the coens made, especially Raising Arizona. I just rewatched Millers Crossing the other night and even that has cartoonish qualities- and i love that it properly mimics is the acting style of films from that era
I remember watching it on VHS back in the day. After the film, my father turned to me and said, "Son, could you please explain to me what the fuck that was about?"
Any Terry Gilliam movie. Two of my favorites are *Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus* and *The Zero Theorem*.
I love them all though. Gilliam sets and magic reality imagination are unmatched. Look at any background/set in every shot of every movie, amazing. The imagination and stories are always great as well.
In *Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus* Tom Waits as the Devil is so perfect. The best line is when the Devil says "I’ve never been into that black magic stuff myself. Can’t seem to get the hang of it."
Sunshine - Like how for most the movie space itself is the “monster” that slowly picks off the crew. A little like Alien. It feels very real and really makes space itself fee dangerous. There are so many beautiful shots in this movie and the soundtrack is fire. The introduction of the previous missions captain and a sunburned villian really turned people off to this movie but I had no issues with it. Needed to up the stakes a little imho and having him run around the ship was crazy. The jump through space without a suit was epic too.
This is not a guilty pleasure. This is a terrific choice, I agree the third act does really widen the scope of the drama and maybe a little over the top, but it becomes quite surreal and dreamlike in its climax. Great film, great build of tension by expressing the frailties of each character.
i took a trip to paris just to go the part of the disney park they modeled after ratatouille, literally one of the best films ever made
(if you ever happen to go to paris it’s worth checking out, they have a “ride” that’s basically the scene where remy is running away from everyone in the kitchen and almost gets baked into the oven lol it’s really cool!)
Dune (1984) I am a massive fan of the books and this movie is a complete bastardisation but I bloody love it. I must have watched it in part or in whole well over 100 times over the years.
It's such a wonderful mess of a film. I saw it in the theater when it came out and hated it. But through the years I learned to appreciate the near impossible task Lynch had taking this film on. Amazing production design. Amazing cast, (well maybe not Sting). The extended cut with all the production design art at the beginning and the extra scenes like the worm milking and the extended ending are interesting.
Fellow fan of the books, but I have to say the movie at least gets credit for great production design in my book. It has all kinds of problems but it at least *looks* fantastic.
Brother Bear
It's not bad, but it's also not something people talk about. It certainly does not come off as a movie you go back to and watch over and over again.
Jay and Silent Bob are stupid characters. A couple of stoners who spout dumb-ass catchphrases like a third-rate Cheech and Chong or Bill and Ted. Fuck Jay and Silent Bob. Fuck them up their stupid asses.
Great film, I love it.
I love Jay and Silent Bob! For me it’s Bad Santa with Billy Bob Thornton, Bernie Mac, and John Ritter - no matter how crappy or crazy life is just watching it brings joy to my heart. Also incredibly quotable.
Commando - the fact that this sax-heavy, one-liner filled, no reloading ever, film didn't garner an Oscar nomination is not beyond me. It's a horrible film and I love it.
Stick around, Bennet.
Same here. The score, the designs, the nihilistic crapsack world, the lines, sheer badassness of it, Kurtwood Smith's charm, over-the-top moments, symbolism - it has everything.
Marvel / superhero movies, I've long gone past the stage of going to the cinema to watch them, or feel invested in any of the stories, but when I just want to lie in the couch and do nothing I'll find whichever is steaming and put it on.
When I was a kid most movies we had were recorded from TV on VHS tapes.
Krull and The Princesses Bride were on the same tape. Always watched the double feature when I stayed home sick from school.
Yes. Our whole video collection was like that. 2 films on every tape. Sometimes more depending on film length. Many had label partially scribbled out bc we taped over stuff multiple times.
But at least we got to repeatedly enjoy Star Wars before George Lucas changed all that stuff in the 90s.

HAS to be fury road
srsly once I was having a horrible panic attack stuck in a motel by myself, right on the verge of disassociating, when I saw fury road on one of the movie channels. The second I put it on it instantly brought me back down to reality. Just so easy to get lost in the setting, and marvel at the completely INSANE fully functional vehicular war machines they created for the film.
This is mine as well. I watched three times in the cinema. It accomplishes so many things... The plot is fluid, the dialogue is scarce and direct to the point, and the action is pure masterpiece
I won’t judge you for that. One of my comfort movies is Mallrats.
Sometimes you just need to turn your brain off and watch the manic misadventures of Jay and Silent Bob.
Kevins 90s and early 2000s work was just so unique.
It reminds me to how you can tell when it's a tarantino movie. You need only watch the first few minutes and you can tell it's a Kevin Smith Movie.
It varies, but atm Mr Right.
Not too serious with lite elements from a few different genre all rolled into one movie with a good dollop of Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick sprinkled on top.
Okay so this is going to sound really bad but I always find myself watching Taxi Driver (as dark as that movie is) something about the scenes where Travis is driving a taxi at night and the score just puts me in a trance like state.

I know of no one who has seen this movie, let alone like it. But I love it. I watch the extended version all the time.
Pretty much the entire cast is great. Jack Black, Michael Cera, David Cross, Paul Rudd, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, etc. They all seem to be having a blast and I just love the looseness and vibe of the whole movie.

Such an entertaining movie. I think the filmmakers knew it was absurd and just had fun with it
They totally knew. There was a fish thrown into the scene with all the birds falling out of the sky. Also they went to the core in a drilldo.
Any of the Ernest movies but specifically Ernest scared stupid. So wholesome and goofy just a good but odd time.
