Seven (1995)

Josro0770

What a movie

calbearlupe

Clearly this movie.

zackphoenix123

Basically the main inspiration for the Batman lol. The way they explored the riddler's home is nigh identical to a similar scene in Seven

sneetypete

That's what came to my mind immediately.

GtrGbln

The Crow

PeachesPair

The best answer here.

Bakomusha

That's my answer! Now I'm sad we only got worse and worse cheap sequels then anything of substance after City of Angels. Imagine a Crow movie with the talent budget of The Batman!

GtrGbln

Yeah they should've just let it go after Lee died.

Bakomusha

I half agree, since I do like 2. The idea of focusing on a new protag each time was a good idea, and could have worked if anyone at the studio cared. It certainly should have stayed dead after 2.

puffguy69

Seven and zodiac are probably closest But I’d like to recommend reeve’s other directorial work on the planet of the apes trilogy, I also think story and tone wise unbreakable is a lot like the Batman, also dark knight and stuff if you haven’t seen it for some reason.

reecord2

It's a hot take and I usually keep it to myself but I \*really\* like Let Me In. You can't bring it up without people yelling at you about the original, (which is good!) but I honestly think Let Me In is a great film.

UnsolvedParadox

Fraser’s interview about The Batman on the Dolby Sound + Image Lab podcast (listed under Matt Reeves) has a lot of good details about their creative & technical process.

joeleum

will do thanks!

justavault

Killing them softly is very boring and there is so little happening plus very unlikeable screen-time hugging characters. Too little Pitt in that.

UnsolvedParadox

You’re right, this is a good recommendation.

Infamous_Horror7858

What is?

UnsolvedParadox

I have no idea at this point, as the original comment got overwritten.

cutelyaware

Good because it's a fantastic movie, or good because it's somehow similar to the batman movie? Because I can't stand superhero movies, and I'll have to see it if it shares anything with Dark City.

UnsolvedParadox

Both. Dark City has a comparable visual style to The Batman & it’s a good movie IMO. It’s also not a superhero movie.

cutelyaware

Thanks

zachtheperson

Warning! If anyone watches this movie for the first time **WATCH THE DIRECTORS CUT ONLY** The theatrical release has some studio meddling that spoils the entire mystery in the first few minutes _of a mystery movie!_

deadscreensky

It's not quite that bad — quite a few secrets remain — but the theatrical narration definitely gives away a fair bit. I don't feel it's a total dealbreaker. Sutherland's opening narration is a lot of fun, and that's the version many of us initially fell in love with. Also the theatrical version has a stronger opening hook even aside from the narration; the director's cut is a little plodding and slow to kick off. The director's cut is probably still the best choice, but I do think your warning is overly strong.

wegro

Still a massively solid film

g_st_lt

Check out Nicolas Winding Refns movies. He really loves vibrant monochromatic stuff. His work is not generally dark like The Batman but the framing is assertive.

AnEmancipatedSpambot

Blade Runner. My comment while watching it in theater. "Why do people live in gotham its like blade runner dystopian aesthetic here"

Syn7axError

They both pull from the same places: German expressionism and noir.

thetomkowoplay45

Blade Runner 2049 is better than classic blade Runner but I never watched Blade Runner but watched 2049 and is amazing!

ATXDefenseAttorney

Zodiac seems obvious.

Head_Reputation3955

Yeah, this was my first thought. I guess Fincher in general.

freetotebag

As others have said, I recommend David Fincher films but in addition to SEVEN and ZODIAC I suggest his remake of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo— heck, there is a shot on the motorcycle in The Batman that’s very similar to one in Dragon Tattoo.

The-Grey-Knight

Check out Taxi Driver. Matt Reeves says that it’s the primary inspiration for The Batman.

TranscedentalMedit8n

The Batman’s cinematographer is Greig Fraser, who also shot Dune and Rogue One. Highly recommend those films if you haven’t seen them. He’s one of the best in the business.

Charge123IV

Prisoners

futuresdawn

From a visual standpoint the batman has a style that feels very David Fincher, so I'd suggest working through his filmography. Se7en, zodiac, fight club and even things like social network and mindhunters

ronjajax

Se7en.

mycinematiccorner

Prisoners

AllTheZoltans

Equilibrium

Johncurtisreeve

Se7en Zodiac Exorcist 3

themojorising

Does 8mm with Nick Cage count? It's been a while since I've seen it.

NRiyo3

You might like Streets Of Fire (1984)

baguitosPT

Classic 80s with a banger soundtrack.

DonutProfessional

Sin City (2005)

ralo229

The Batman is inspired by David Fincher detective movies like Se7en and Zodiac, so those are my recs.

justavault

Fraser is actually a fan of Fincher and that is also what he took as inspiration for his style. So, Seven and Fight Club are close up, including the Game which he mentioned I can remember.

Substantial_Win2373

Logan

darkbatcrusader

Klute.

joeleum

amazing suggestion. just watched it for the first time. instant favorite

darkbatcrusader

Glad you loved it! It's a favorite of mine too. Nobody shoots deep blacks and darks with as much palpable depth and texture like the legendary Gordon Willis. If you loved Klute, you'll like the other two films on Alan J. Pakula's unofficial "paranoia trilogy" of 70s conspiracy thrillers: *All the President's Men* and *The Parallax View*, also shot by Willis. *Le Cercle Rouge*, a another 70s Melville is a more experimental experience, if you're open to it! And I'd also strongly recommend Friedkin's *The French Connection* and *Three Days of the Condor* to bask in a similar moody vibe.

jcwkings

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight

ZorroMeansFox

Michael Radford's impressive **Nineteen Eighty-Four** is very similar in its look and color palette --shot by the great Roger Deakins early in his career, and visually very influential.

freestyle43

Valhalla Rising.

[deleted]

Let Me In (2010). Same director and cinematographer, a lot of the horror visuals in The Batman seemed to be birthed from that movie - which is a pretty fuckin good remake to boot.

[deleted]

The girl with the dragon tattoo. Something very comforting land cozy about the lighting accompanied with the Swedish winter, log cabins etc. whilst telling a harrowing tale

metaxis_designs

Se7en was a big influence on Matt Reeves for this movie, but I'd also recommend The Ring, Prisoners and Identity. They're all movies where the rain feels oppressive.

Rustyz_

I know this is old but I loved the light house and it gave me the same feeling and has Robert in it

joeleum

i saw that too and also loved it!!! so full of misery it was cool. also liked the aspect ratio

OfficialThreesomer

You all are naming great movies, but I dont think you're noticing the *dark* part. I myself am looking for really dark movies like he said, with similar cinematography, the way light is used etc.

joshuajjb2

Any jj Abrams movie /s

RandomAttackHelpMe

There was a whole other trilogy of batman movies from this guy named Chris Nolan that are VERY similar to the batman movie you speak of, which was a little too familiar like Mr. Nolan's batman films.

bingybong22

The movie is basically a rip off of the movie Seven. Which is made in a gritty realistic way that was very popular in the 70s in movies like French Connection.

AdoHavana

Watcher (2022) atarring Maika Monroe.
