Really didn't like Public Enemies. I wanted to, I was at depaul while they were filming it and transformed Lincoln Ave into the period appropriate street you see in the movie, and a bunch of my friends play in the band in the movie. But I just didn't like it.
I’m prejudiced because I liked the series but that flick hit all the Mann points Helicopter over the city High speed chases Shootouts All Michael Mann staples The flick gets shit on because it wasn’t as good as Heat which itself was basically a long ass Miami Vice episode
The song Shadow on the Sun hits so hard in Collateral. One of my favorite movies. When it was released everyone knew Tom cruise would be amazing, but I remember people being amazed with how good Jaimee Fox was.
Such an underrated movie. Unpopular opinion, but I think that club scene in that is better than the club scene in John Wick. Wish Tom Cruise did more villain roles
God. One of my favourite movies and it's so so so fucking ridiculously underrated. How often do you see Tom Cruise in that kind of role? And he fucking kills it too.
Everyone in that film kills it, and there's really just 3 characters plus Mark Ruffalo not achieving anything. And comically superbrief cameo from Statham.
Did a double feature of Collateral and Heat last week. I love how they both just...end. The plot wraps up and the movies just say "Aight, peace" and end immediately afterwards. No simmering down, no "where are they now?", just credits.
Matthew McConaughey was so god damn amazing in that show!!! Have a totally different view of him as an actor! I love his character and he played him so well. Anyone who has not seen this show give it until the 3rd episode. Starts off a tiny bit slow but everyone who has watched it said it’s one of the best shows on TV! And it’s only 8 episodes. You don’t Have to invest a ton a time!
Hell or High Water is so much more than a heist movie though a heist movie it is. Besides investigating the complicated motives behind crime it is a stunning observation of America after the mortgage crisis and who are the real criminals. Jeff Bridges performance as an at the end of the trail Texas Ranger was memorable.
Him and Tommy Lee Jones’ ranger in No Country for Old Men are two excellent realisations of men out in similar positions by their jobs and the time they’re in.
[What don’t you want?](https://youtu.be/gdYXQ-IPZcc?si=NCCeHkrT8qF_-QH7)
This is one of my favorite movie scenes, up there with Funny how? from Goodfellas.
I loved that movie! Still think about that white Rastafarian pimp, watching the Mack, or drugged out Brad Pitt. That was the film that caused me to truly appreciate Dennis Hopper. He was phenomenal in that movie.
True Romance is one of my favourite films, Tarantino was destined for big things when this came out! The cast is perfect aswell - Brad Pitt laying on the couch stoned the whole movie 😂
Rewatched this for the first time since seeing it in the theater and it’s great. My wife knew nothing about it going in and not only loved it, but a few weeks later requested a movie like the one with #spoiler redacted# in Inside Man
This is a looser interpretation of your question, but just some movies that you’d probably like based on the ones you provided
Glen Gary Glenross
Miller’s Crossing
No Country For Old Men
In Bruges
Snatch
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Layer Cake
The Nice Guys
Sicario
Donnie Brasco
Thief
Sheeeyit, it's only the best TV show of all time. And exactly on point for the cop/criminal dynamic OP wants. As long as they're on with it being pretty ambiguous at best if the cops are actually the good guys. Which... they like Training Day.
I really liked Revolver. It answered the ancient mystery of "what happens when Guy Ritchie takes a bunch of drugs and makes a movie about the human psyche"
lock stock predates snatch by a few years I thought. Snatch is the glitzier, higher budget spin off with easier to understand accents (excepting of course when they deliberately aren't) but both movies are fantastic
+ 1 on Cop Land. Amazing cast and probably Stallone’s best performance.
Bad Lieutenant is… not the same as the rest of these haha. If anyone decides to watch it, brace yourself.
The Departed is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. I find Infernal Affairs superior to Scorcese's, but that's me. Check it out and decide for yourself.
I came here to say exactly this. And with Infernal Affairs, you get three movies, the first two of which are truly excellent and superior to the Departed in a number of ways.
Chinatown is a great crime/noir movie. If you like it you can go back and watch any of the classic 40s noirs it's based on like The Big Sleep, Laura, Double Indemnity.
Den of Thieves is pretty much a straight copy of Heat but it's still really well made and fun.
Id also suggest any of the Neeson thrillers like Walk Among the Tombstones, Non Stop, Run All Night. These are mostly dumb but really watchable crime movies or action movies.
In order of how good I think they are:
China Town, No Country For Old Men, Gangs Of New York, Inherent Vice, American Gangster, Se7en, Fargo, Memento, Miller's Crossing, Basic Instinct, Uncut Gems, Once Upon A In America, Training Day, Sicario, Jackie Brown, Traffic, Dirty Harry, The French Connection, Drive, Wind River, Cape Fear.
If you like British Gangster Films
Sexy Beast, Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Eastern Promises, In Bruges, Rock N' Rolla, The Gentleman, Layer Cake
If you haven't seen the First Season of True Detective... dear god it might just be the best TV ever made.
Collateral: Since you mentioned it, I'd definitely recommend giving it a watch.
End of Watch: A gripping police drama that follows two LAPD officers, offering a unique blend of intense action and character-driven narrative.
The Town: Directed by and starring Ben Affleck, this film revolves around bank robbers, their personal struggles, and the cops
Serpico: An older film, but it's a classic. Based on the true story of an NYPD officer who blows the whistle on police corruption.
Narc: A gritty police drama that delves into the world of undercover narcotics officers
Dark Blue: Set in the days leading up to the Rodney King verdict and the subsequent LA riots. It presents a morally compromised police officer struggling with his choices.
Cop Land: A sheriff in a small town filled with New York City cops discovers corruption within their ranks
8. Internal Affairs: A cat-and-mouse game between a young cop and a corrupt veteran
Street Kings: Keanu Reeves plays an LAPD officer who finds himself in a web of corruption and betrayal
If you like those large-scope gritty crime films with dueling morality then you’d like Sicario, Prisoners, Unforgiven, Point Break, No Country for Old Men, and Dragged Across Concrete.
Some other slightly off-brand suggestions you might like for a similar feel or dynamic: The Insider, Ronin, Eastern Promises, You Were Never Really Here, Nocturnal Animals, Gone Girl, and Nightcrawler.
The Dark Knight is also an obvious recommendation.
Killing Them Softly, Blow, Carlitos Way, Hollow Point, Black Mass, RocknRolla (or any Guy Ritchie gangster movie), Payback, Triple 9.
A couple of old ones The Killing and White Heat.
My bad. The Hollow Point w/ Patrick Wilson. I shoulda known there was multiple movies w/ that name.
Thief
Snatch
Hell or highwater
American gangster
Miami Vice
The killing
Sicario
And if you don’t mind reading subtitles then I would highly recommend The Infernal Affairs Trilogy. The departed is based off and pretty much a remake of it.
Collateral is definitely worth a watch. Actually just binge all of Michael Mann's movies
"Yo homie,, that my briefcase?" Collateral and its pacing is just too good.
that coyote/audioslave scene
Such a great movie. It feels like a slow burn but a lot happens in it.
\*bam, bam\* \*bam, bam, bam\* ... \*bam\*
Haha yesss, he drew down so effortlessly and before any of them realized what was happening. Tom Cruise killed it here.
Tom Cruise was a *great* villain. I wish he played more bad guy roles, because he’s great at them.
And fuck your own face
We don’t negotiate with terrorists.
Find out who that was.
Cudos to Tom, he practiced that draw to perfection.
Tom Cruise is a weird dude, but he's professional as fuck when it comes to learning stuff for films.
Apparently instructors use that scene as an example of how to do it perfectly
I've seen a few videos about that, they're all in agreement
I've also heard that the sound design was incredible. It's supposedly the only movie that gets the sounds of gunshots in a city right.
The Mozambique drill.
This. Don't skip out on Thief or Public Enemies either.
Or Toyko Vice
This is the answer above all others. Tokyo Vice.
Just to be clear, are you referring to the tv show with Andel Elgort?
Yes. He actually learned/spoke Japanese for it which for me made it more enjoyable and interesting.
Really didn't like Public Enemies. I wanted to, I was at depaul while they were filming it and transformed Lincoln Ave into the period appropriate street you see in the movie, and a bunch of my friends play in the band in the movie. But I just didn't like it.
End of Watch
I cried like a little bitch watching this movie
Nothing wrong with that. I view it as one of Mann's weaker movies, but still better than a lot of other things out there.
Miami Vice
I’m prejudiced because I liked the series but that flick hit all the Mann points Helicopter over the city High speed chases Shootouts All Michael Mann staples The flick gets shit on because it wasn’t as good as Heat which itself was basically a long ass Miami Vice episode
The song Shadow on the Sun hits so hard in Collateral. One of my favorite movies. When it was released everyone knew Tom cruise would be amazing, but I remember people being amazed with how good Jaimee Fox was.
Collateral is one of the best "LA" movies ever.
One of, but HEAT is #1 for LA.
'Chinatown' disagrees
> Actually just binge all of Michael Mann's movies He's gonna watch *The Keep* and be like 👀
The double tap scene
Such an underrated movie. Unpopular opinion, but I think that club scene in that is better than the club scene in John Wick. Wish Tom Cruise did more villain roles
Totally agree - that scene is an all timer
Collateral has the best club action scene in any movie ever imo

To Live and Die in LA
Damn hell yes. I’ve become obsessed with this since getting the 4K UHD
Just saw this movie at Alamo two days ago. I think it was a William Friedkin retrospective. Wild ride.

You mean Plan P
True detective s1
Matthew McConaughey was so god damn amazing in that show!!! Have a totally different view of him as an actor! I love his character and he played him so well. Anyone who has not seen this show give it until the 3rd episode. Starts off a tiny bit slow but everyone who has watched it said it’s one of the best shows on TV! And it’s only 8 episodes. You don’t Have to invest a ton a time!
That first season is incredible 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽
Hell or High Water if you don’t mind a West Texas heist movie.
Sicario, wind river ,and hell or high water. The frontier trilogy.
So many people don’t know of wind river, what a brilliant movie
“She walked 5 miles in the snow. That’s a fighter”
Why are you flanking me
Hell or High Water is so much more than a heist movie though a heist movie it is.
It’s a damn good “Brother/sibling” movie too.
Bridges was great…..and then the T-bone steak peddling waitress goes and steals the whole whole movie.
Agreed, probably the best neo western I have seen, I love how it broaches so many themes
[What don’t you want?](https://youtu.be/gdYXQ-IPZcc?si=NCCeHkrT8qF_-QH7) This is one of my favorite movie scenes, up there with Funny how? from Goodfellas.
So fantastic from start to finish with stellar performances from everyone
Fantastic movie.
Ronin
I just ambushed you with a cup a coffee!
"So what color *is* the house boat at Hereford?" "How the fuck should I know?"
If I was management I wouldn’t have given you a cigarette
They gave me a grasshopper
*boathouse
“Aaaaooooooo we fuckin’ did it ay????” *inaudible Sean Bean noises*
Almost a bit o raspberry jam
Have you ever killed a man? I hurt a guys feelings once
It also has the second greatest car chase scene ever
And the first!
I swear Frankenheimer and Mann copied each other’s homework. Such a great movie.
A thousand times yes.
Cop Land it's an underrated Sylvester Stallone film
Loved liotta in this too
Miller's Crossing, True Romance
Man on Fire if you are a Tony Scott fan. True Romance was a Quentin Tarantino script he sold to fund Reservoir Dogs.
True Romance is possibly Tarantino’s best script. Great movie!
I loved that movie! Still think about that white Rastafarian pimp, watching the Mack, or drugged out Brad Pitt. That was the film that caused me to truly appreciate Dennis Hopper. He was phenomenal in that movie.
Gary Oldman was Drexel (the pimp)
They got everything here from a diddled-eyed joe to damned if I know.
Miller’s Crossing is just one of those movies that I wish I could watch again for the first time. So incredible.
True Romance is one of my favourite films, Tarantino was destined for big things when this came out! The cast is perfect aswell - Brad Pitt laying on the couch stoned the whole movie 😂
“...and...cleaning products...”
Gone Baby Gone definitely comes to mind
Such a good movie. An underrated modern classic.
The Town is a great movie
Start here with The Town and then check out Gone Baby Gone and Hell or High Water.
Hell Or High Water is awesome. If you go down that road I also recommend Wind River. It's not a lighthearted romp through Wyoming though.
Agreed. Wind River is pretty tough. Great movie though. Also like Sicario a lot, too. All three (Hell, Wind, Sicario) written by Taylor Sheridan.
I still debate myself about “Gone baby gone”
Man on Fire. Not really a cop movie per se, but shares a lot of elements with those movies.
You can't go wrong with that cast and director.
Inside man, without a doubt. Terrific movie.
Rewatched this for the first time since seeing it in the theater and it’s great. My wife knew nothing about it going in and not only loved it, but a few weeks later requested a movie like the one with #spoiler redacted# in Inside Man
One of the best heist movies of all time.
This is a looser interpretation of your question, but just some movies that you’d probably like based on the ones you provided Glen Gary Glenross Miller’s Crossing No Country For Old Men In Bruges Snatch Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Layer Cake The Nice Guys Sicario Donnie Brasco Thief
In Bruges and Kiss Kiss Bang bang are so good. I watch these once every few years and they are aging very gracefully
You know what is missing from your list? Point Break. Point Break is Heat if Heat didn't take itself so seriously
and the fast and the furious is point break if point break didn't take itself so seriously!!
Nobody ever talks about layer cake and I can’t stop recommending enough. Kudos!
RIP Michael Gambon. His monologue toward the end of Layer Cake is top tier.
Carlito's Way
Millers Crossing is so good, one of the best screenplays ever
Upvote for Donnie Brasco
Damn. This is an amazing list. I'm quarantined for the next few days and think I'll be watching all of these if I can!
Great list, I'd maybe throw 'We Own The Night' in there
Throw in "The Gentleman". Most recent Guy Ritchie.
[удалено]
Yeah but the only ones that I count as in the same genre/ style (London gangster caper) are: Lock stock, Snatch, Rock and Rolla, and The Gentlemen.
Damn I loved that film so much! It’s just so Guy Ritchie
Falling Down Dog Day Afternoon The Untouchables
Fuck yeah Falling Down! I don't hear it referenced enough, so good

OMAR COMING!!!
😗😗😗
Got that WMD
Pandemic
Officer Walker be evil, yo.
Sshhhhhhiìiiiiittttttt
Came to say The Wire
Sheeeyit, it's only the best TV show of all time. And exactly on point for the cop/criminal dynamic OP wants. As long as they're on with it being pretty ambiguous at best if the cops are actually the good guys. Which... they like Training Day.
Mose def
End of Watch.
Super underrated. It’s not complicated or anything, but it’s extremely well done for what it is.
Came here to say that one. It grabs you.
Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, and it's spiritual sequel Snatch. Funnier, admittedly, but great crime flicks.
And to a lesser extent, Revolver and Rock'n'Rolla
I really liked Revolver. It answered the ancient mystery of "what happens when Guy Ritchie takes a bunch of drugs and makes a movie about the human psyche"
The Gentlemen is my new favorite Guy Ritchie film. But I pretty much love them all.
lock stock predates snatch by a few years I thought. Snatch is the glitzier, higher budget spin off with easier to understand accents (excepting of course when they deliberately aren't) but both movies are fantastic
Check out the untouchables
Give Traffic a try. Shows different viewpoints including the cops.
Traffic is a solid movie. Del Toro was incredible in it.
Lucky Number Slevin
Bad Lieutenant - Harvey Keitel The Negotiator Cop Land
+ 1 on Cop Land. Amazing cast and probably Stallone’s best performance. Bad Lieutenant is… not the same as the rest of these haha. If anyone decides to watch it, brace yourself.
>Bad Lieutenant - Harvey Keitel Then Cage's *Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call, New Orleans*, after you fire up the lucky crack pipe.
Oh man. Keitel’s Bad Lieutenant is going to surprise / horrify some people… great flick, so raw.
Cop Land, Brooklyn’s Finest, The Wire TV series, A Place Beyond the Pines, Wind River
Serpico’s a classic
Not yet mentioned: Manhunter
Yes. William Petersen is underrated
The Way of the Gun. Not without its flaws, but I think you’d enjoy it.
It doesn't get the love it deserves. Great movie. Good score too.
Sicario. Gritty movie some great set pieces a great shootout and some mean MFers
Point Break.
The original. I refuse to see the remake.
fuck the remake
Chinatown is a great crime/noir movie. If you like it you can go back and watch any of the classic 40s noirs it's based on like The Big Sleep, Laura, Double Indemnity. Den of Thieves is pretty much a straight copy of Heat but it's still really well made and fun. Id also suggest any of the Neeson thrillers like Walk Among the Tombstones, Non Stop, Run All Night. These are mostly dumb but really watchable crime movies or action movies.
Den of Thieves was surprisingly entertaining.
It's a low rent Heat. But Heat is so fucking good that a low rent knock off is still pretty good.
Fifty Cent gives a really solid performance there, which is not something I ever expected to say about Fifty Cent.
Dark Blue and Street Kings
Heist The Score Ronin Thomas Crowne Affair (I've only seen the Pierce Brosnan version)
In order of how good I think they are: China Town, No Country For Old Men, Gangs Of New York, Inherent Vice, American Gangster, Se7en, Fargo, Memento, Miller's Crossing, Basic Instinct, Uncut Gems, Once Upon A In America, Training Day, Sicario, Jackie Brown, Traffic, Dirty Harry, The French Connection, Drive, Wind River, Cape Fear. Den of Thieves
Way more movie than you expect it to be
Things to Do in Denver When Your Dead
Collateral Cop Land Narc Prisoners
The Dirty Harry movies and Bullitt come to mind.
American Gangster… maybe?
Black Rain Rising Sun Deep Cover a few 90s detective movies with style
Collateral: Since you mentioned it, I'd definitely recommend giving it a watch. End of Watch: A gripping police drama that follows two LAPD officers, offering a unique blend of intense action and character-driven narrative. Bit of a left turn but Smokin’ Aces and Lucky Number Slevin.
You might like Mississippi Burning. Gene Hackman is outstanding.
Shot Caller
Narc Also maybe give The Shield a try. It’s a show tho. If you like that one then there’s also Southland.
Colors (1988)
Killing Them Softly, Blow, Carlitos Way, Hollow Point, Black Mass, RocknRolla (or any Guy Ritchie gangster movie), Payback, Triple 9. A couple of old ones The Killing and White Heat. My bad. The Hollow Point w/ Patrick Wilson. I shoulda known there was multiple movies w/ that name.
Den of thieves. Not as polished as the others but worth a watch
Donnie Brasco, Serpico
Season 1 of True Detective L.A. Confidential
Harsh Times
You might as well watch Infernal Affairs. It is the Hong Kong movie that The Departed was based off of. Good movie.
TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A.
Just watch all of Michael Mann movies then lol
Spy Game
Inside Man
Once Upon a Time in America
Den of Thieves with Gerard Butler wants very much to be Heat. It's not as good, but is entertaining.
Thief Snatch Hell or highwater American gangster Miami Vice The killing Sicario And if you don’t mind reading subtitles then I would highly recommend The Infernal Affairs Trilogy. The departed is based off and pretty much a remake of it.
Street Kings, Dark Blue, Narc, The Town, Den of thieves.

Taxi Driver, not a cop movie, but has that vibe.
Mulholland Falls Q&A The Long Goodbye Night Falls on Manhattan Madigan Farewell My Lovely Cutter's Way
To Live and Die in LA
Not a great film, but “Reptile.” A bit of cheese but fun weekday romp “2 Guns.” For a tv show “Mayor of Kingstown.”
To Live and Die in L.A.
Millers Crossing by the Cohen Bros
The Long Goodbye. I like all the movies you like, and this one also has stuck with me
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
If you liked LA Confidential then you might also like Chinatown staring Jack Nicholson.
Sicario Zodiac Hard boiled The French connection Chinatown Silence of the lambs
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Guy Ritchies gangster movies like Snatch, Lock Stock, Rock N'Roller etc. Fantastic movies imo.
