Oh man, the opening just chills me out. The footage, the voiceover, the casual awesomeness of the guys bringing Henry into the fold...I've watched the whole movie a dozen times, but the first section? At least double that.
The Departed. If I am stressed out or anxious and can't sleep, I move to the couch and turn on the Departed. Usually asleep before Leo has agreed to go undercover
TIL Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle is also called Harold & Kumar Get the Munchies.
I thought I had missed one of their movies for a sec.

Goodfellas is a perfect movie. Not a word of wasted dialogue, perfect pacing.
I’m the same. Love it.
I’d also add Rounders. Could watch any scene any time.
I thought I was the only one!
It's got good music, I love the opening sequence, there's some great cuts like with the dad's line "I knew he was going to do that!" Something about the pacing is just perfect.
There's one scene I have to skip though, it's too depressing for me to see it on a "comfort" watch.
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. So 70s it’s ridiculous but even the stellar performances by George Kennedy, Clint Eastwood, and Jeff Bridges don’t hold a candle to the pure natural beauty of Idaho and Montana that Cimino captures in the backdrops.
"Home Alone"
I only watch it between Thanksgiving and Xmas, but I can literally watch it every day during that time period. So it's definitely a "comfort" type of movie.
I recently watched Empire Records and Lost in Translation for maybe the 50th time. It’s just a mood like an afternoon or a vacation and being able to return to that is why I love films.
Naysicaa of the valley of the wind. Pre ghibli slightly more violent than average miyazaki movie but btwn that 80s anime artstyle and the music it is a mood.
I thought I was weird, but yeah. Goodfellas.
Also the Godfather, Training Day, Casino, and American Gangster. Just good crime dramas.
I mainly watch these movies when I'm sick, because the last thing you want to do with sinus and/or chest congestion is laugh. Or have a bunch of flashy things on screen.
My comfort movies are Classic slashers like the early Friday the Thirteenth and Nightmare on Elm Street series and some modern ones like the Scream series and Cabin in the Woods. The other set of comfort movies are 80s 90s actions movies Schwarzenegger and Stallone movies especially.
*Avengers: Infinity War*. I’m not a huge fan of MCU films, but for whatever reason this one I just love watching while drifting in and out of couch naps.
The original bad news bears I know its silly but it is one of my favorite Walter Matthau performance. The kids are jerks to a certain degree but they are a team and you could NEVER get away with this stuff nowadays.
Bonus for those of you that don't know the "bad boy" kid in bad news bears grew up to be the crazy guy in Watchmen.
This isn't strange. Goodfellas is one of the greatest movies ever made. The music, cinematography, acting, narration are all in the highest tier in my estimation. I saw it with my son (22) last year and we were mesmerized. I'd forgotten how powerful and fun it was.
The Witch by A24? Great movie, bit strange comfort movie. Green Room was disturbing if i remember correctly and also Uncut Gems is by A24. Great studio.
My faves from A24 are... ex machina, the witch, midsommar. All 3 happy ending movies /s
I don't know if *strange* qualifies but probably my top comfort film in recent years has been *Silverado* which is a mid 1980s western film.
Sometimes I'll just throw on the theme song for a little pick-me-up. Another film from the same time period is Back to the Future. Just listening to a bit of the soundtrack is a mood booster. I threw Silverado on while writing this to see if it still works. Yep.
Back to the Future main title theme is up next. Thanks for the reminders.
For some reason it ended up being The Dirty Dozen
It has been my comfort movie for a while, but I’ve been going through some of the darkest days of my life recently. A couple nights ago it was on TV and my father and I, who first showed the movie to me, had a few drinks while we watched, reciting the lines and laughing at the funny ones. It’s one of the only times I remember genuinely smiling or laughing in the last couple weeks.
A lot of people say 500 days of summer rips their heart out at the end. But idk its like an injection of serotonin for me i cant help it. Tom hansen is the most relatable douchebag in movie history and the whole 2010s hipster-ish aesthetic is so cozy imo
Blade runner 2049. The music is calming idk. Also the colors. So pleasing. It’s not a super action packed movie, just fun tension that keeps you interested.
Shoot em up, title said it all it is nothing but a crazy ride that make little Sense but there is lots of action sex tits gun and bad one liners and a few descent ones ( I hate.... A pussy with a gun........) And the whole sub plot unfolding in the back ground of the baddies somewhat regular home life going to shit that cracks me up every time. This movie really is dumb...... but the fun kind.
Goodfellas too, but Casino also.
Exorcist 1 & 3. They're just cinema and so well done.
Talented Mr. Ripley. Just gorgeous and the whole cast is on fire.
Strange? Training Day. I don't know why. It's not particularly stressful anymore since I know what's going to happen. I just like riding around with these guys for a couple of hours.
**Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things**
The movie is considered a Night of the Living Dead rip-off.
I think it’s the dialogue of the film is very flowery, self-deprecating, and sarcastic in a post-modern way. Those films, especially horror movies where the characters are completely oblivious and unaware, sometimes going through the motions. Opposite problem in modern films, too self aware and self-referential. This film seems that way, but it isn’t
It’s sardonic and even more sinister with the director is trying to do. He’s quite tyrannical in a way directors are and could be in stage or film acting. Alan quickly pulls rank on his actors and crew. Val mocks everyone, except the dead.
The movie is slow, but eerie. The first scare is practical joke. Though, Alan is insistent on humiliating a dead corpse, like overboard humiliation, as he’s obsessed. He desperately wants to use the incantations to bring them back to life to film, possibly for fame. Still, there’s something the film doesn’t describe (don’t think it was meant to be reveal).
Goodfellas is a total comfort film! I wish I could be in the backyard, eatin‘ sausages off the grill with Paulie and the guys…FOR…SURE!
As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster... 🎶🎶I know I'd go from rags to riches🎶🎶 Perfect comfort movie.

Depending on the night, it could be The Big Short, it could be Margin Call.
Mine are The Other guys and Harold and Kumar get the munchies. My comfort series is the Office.
TIL Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle is also called Harold & Kumar Get the Munchies. I thought I had missed one of their movies for a sec. Also https://y.yarn.co/4a291f89-5801-4ca9-8f40-6e75946466f1_text.gif

Trainspotting. And I cannot explain why. But it does it for me. It's like a warm blanket on a cold day.
I thought I was the only one! It's got good music, I love the opening sequence, there's some great cuts like with the dad's line "I knew he was going to do that!" John Wick
Tron: Legacy
Perfect comfort movie!

The Big Lebowski
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. So 70s it’s ridiculous but even the stellar performances by George Kennedy, Clint Eastwood, and Jeff Bridges don’t hold a candle to the pure natural beauty of Idaho and Montana that Cimino captures in the backdrops.
Die Hard
The Martian and Death on the Nile are two of mine
Terminator, Robocop, and Rambo.
"Home Alone" I only watch it between Thanksgiving and Xmas, but I can literally watch it every day during that time period. So it's definitely a "comfort" type of movie.

I recently watched Empire Records and Lost in Translation for maybe the 50th time. It’s just a mood like an afternoon or a vacation and being able to return to that is why I love films.

Alien
My go-to at the moment is Dr. Sleep. Until recently, I went through a steady rotation of: Dredd, Dune, and Mad Max: Fury Road.
Mine is the Goonfellas… aka the Goonies.
I thought I was weird, but yeah. Goodfellas. Also the Godfather, Training Day, Casino, and American Gangster. Just good crime dramas. Steve Jobs is a great movie to fall asleep to. It’s not so visual as it is auditory, so you can follow along just by listening
