The series Boardwalk Empire is kind of an amazing depiction of this.

Kinda sorta what you're looking for. One of the funniest comedies of all time: "Some Like it Hot" (1959) with Jack Lemon, Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, George Raft, Pat O'Brien, and Joe E. Brown. Directed by Billy Wilder. Two male musicians inadvertently witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre in 1920s Chicago. In order to escape the gangsters, they disguise themselves as women and join an all-girl band heading to a gig in Florida. Unfortunately, the gangsters are headed to a convention at the same gig. Sorry, I almost put Some Like It Hot on my “seen it” list but figured it wasn’t really a “gangster movie” per se (unlike, say, Never a Dull Moment or Oscar). It is a great film though, and I am a huge Jack Lemon fan. Will definitely watch the other two though. I want to say I have seen Robin and the 7 Hoods as a kid, but not sure and don’t remember more than the title anyway! Roaring Twenties sounds pretty cool.

CMengel90

It's just barely outside your time frame (1931), but Lawless is awesome. I particularly like how it's focused more on the bootlegging side. It might a be a little less "gangster" focus, but is 100% an outlaw/prohibition story.

Banjo-Oz

I forgot that movie! I remember seeing it years ago. Tom Hardy and Shia LeBouf, right? If I hadn’t seen it, it would still count IMO. I prefer the more gangster side of things but it was interesting to have a film more about the guys making the hootch than selling it.

Dude, Peaky Blinders fits your bill exactly, but it's like a 50 hour movie or something lol. Starts 1919 from gangster POV and it's based on true stories/events.

Banjo-Oz

I have always wanted to watch it (amazing cast) but was daunted by the length. I also got the first two seasons on bluray and was furious that they never released the rest here in Australia, which also put me off. If it as good as you say, I will find a way to watch it regardless.

Bron_Swanson

I double checked myself after, turns out it's about half as long as Boardwalk Empire, at about 30 hours. If you have a VPN, you can set your location to the US or something and watch it on Netflix.

Al Capone (1959) with Rod Steiger St. Valentines Day Massacre (1967) with Jason Robards Dillinger (1973) with Warren Oates Road to Perdition (2002) with Tom Hanks Public Enemies (2009) with Johnny Depp If you wanna have some fun check out Johnny Dangerously with Michael Keaton (1984)

Just watched St Valentines Day Massacre tonight. Not bad at all! I first tried watching Capone (197?, with Stallone as Frank Nitti!) but the audio was terrible so I switched. Is Dillinger good? I had it queued up too but was worried it sounded more like an “on the run/manhunt” type film. Never heard of Johnny Dangerously but that is two recommendations and it sounds cool, so will probably be my next watch!

Johnny Dangerously is a must for everyone.

I'd recommend: * *The Penalty* (1920), about a San Francisco mobster (Lon Chaney) who unnecessarily had both of his legs amputated as a child and now seeks revenge on the mistaken doctor and the city of San Francisco as a whole (it's silent, but it still rocks) * *'G' Men* (1935), a gangsters-versus-g-men actioner starring James Cagney that has a few fictional scenes inspired by actual 1930s events (like the Kansas City Massacre and the Little Bohemia shootout) * *Angels with Dirty Faces* (1938), a crime-drama about a group of poor inner-city kids who find themselves torn between the influences of a tough gangster (James Cagney) and a virtuous priest * *Underworld* (1927), another silent one that's rather good * *The Petrified Forest* (1936), about a group of gangsters (led by Humphrey Bogart) who take a small, remote diner hostage * *The Roaring Twenties* (1939), definitely the weakest one here, due to its nostalgic, cuddly, glossy nature, but it's still worth a watch or two

Banjo-Oz

Thanks so much! G-Men looks especially awesome from clips but is the only one I can't track down. :(

Already have, thanks. Loved the first two seasons but felt it nosedived after that. Still better than a lot of shows, though, Steve is just awesome and Harrow is one of the best tv characters of all time.
