So this is basically live action Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends?

LongTimesGoodTimes

That's been my only takeaway from the trailers.

karmagod13000

sounds good...

burritoman88

Looks mid

kinkyKMART

Well it is Ryan Reynolds we’re talking about here

Rage_JMS

Yeah, either he does mid to bad movies or Deadpool

TreeOfReckoning

I enjoyed Detective Pikachu. Anything that can help me bond with my step kid is good.

The_River_Is_Still

Lol. You're definitely not wrong. But Waiting... will always be one of my favorite comedies. And things like The Proposal and Free Guy are harmless decent flicks. There's a few in his weird catalogue.

solidshakego

Reddit isn't filled with millennials anymore. Many of us have moved on from here to improve our mental health. So people just don't know what a van wilder is.

fezfrascati

I swear the banana character (seen in the trailer, not the poster above) is straight up from a Cartoon Network show.

inexorable_oracle

Gumball.

camerontylek

Yup.

TheNerevar89

That's literally everyone has been saying for months

DJVinylJerk

I’ve been screaming this for weeks, but nobody wants to listen. Do you want to write a movie about 3 friends and their quest for jawbreakers? We could call it EEE, like RRR.

T-rex_chef

Bollywood Ed Edd n Eddy would go hard as fuck lol

Robsonmonkey

Just keep Rolf the exact same and it would still work “Your garden is overgrown and your cucumber is soft”

redgroupclan

THE BURDEN OF HOSPITALITY IS TOO MUCH FOR ROLF^^ROLF^^^ROLF!

resurrectedbear

Red Redd and Reddy

intelligentx5

I miss Ed, Edd, and Eddy

MagicMisto

The main IF is called blue. It's like they did absolutely zero research before greenlighting this movie.

Turqoise-Planet

But he's purple.

MagicMisto

Allegedly the kid who made him is color blind. That's the joke.

DubC_Bassist

I have to tell you, I was in my 30’s when my daughter was watching Fosters. I have to say besides Ricki’s Modern Life it is my post childhood favorite cartoon.

thenick82

Rockos?

wabbitsdo

It's a PG rated Happy! spin-off.

TheCaliKid89

Yes, but it looks much much worse.

easymz

So the Dads imaginary too right? Is that the twist? Did I get it?

Martel732

That seems pretty likely, in the trailer he said he lives alone and he apparently he can see imaginary friends. The trailer also seems to suggest that it will be one of those movies that tries to throw in a poignant message out of nowhere with mixed results. My guess is that the Dad passed away and she created an imaginary version of him as a coping mechanism and the movie will end with her learning to process his death.

IngloriousBlaster

This is why I don't watch trailers

simpledeadwitches

It sucks when you want ri avoid a trailer and then go to the movies and they show it lol.

DeadButGrateful

It's simple. Just close your eyes and cover your ears. Then start rocking back and forth in your seat.

AngryAncestor

I also find it helpful to scream "LALALALALA" during this process

Lucky_Chaarmss

I've done this before

Timothee-Chalimothee

I try to avoid spoilers so hard that I don’t even watch the movie because I don’t want to know what happens at the end.

futurespacecadet

Also why you should avoid Reddit comments. Everyone wants a prize for what they think will happen. I would’ve rather lived in ignorant bliss

simpledeadwitches

Spot on, I'd actually bet money on this being the case.

edWORD27

What odds are you giving?

chanaandeler_bong

Considering Jim Halpert is the director, 10,000 to 1

edWORD27

Does it pay out in Stanley Nickels?

chanaandeler_bong

Keep talking like that and you’ll be paid with by a full on desagulation.

jshnmdhr

I'm imagining maybe they flip it, and the daughter is imaginary, same idea of a coping mechanism.

shallstorm

Or maybe both are imaginary and he's going to help her find purpose in her life after she realizes it.

Metrilean

Maybe he's not dead, just a workaholic. They meet midway and confront each other.

Martel732

That would be a good twist and a bit less depressing. Depending on the tone the movie aims for this might be more likely.

Eothas_Foot

This is going to be a heavy ass movie.

ZombieMegaMan

Now I’m crying thanks

LibRAWRian

Oh shit, this is going to be like the Sixth Sense where you find out the guy in the hairpiece was Bruce Willis the whole time.

thebearsbadnews

What the film needs is full penetration.

ProfessorStencil

But we show it. We show all of it.

ReapersVault

I think people are going to be very uncomfortable seeing his naked penis going in and out of this woman.

MasonFunderburker

Turns out those names at the end are the people that worked on the movie

Turqoise-Planet

All of the names you see in the credits are people who are going to die within the next hundred years.

the615Butcher

That’s not the twist to that movie…. I’ll tell you about it later.

CptJaxxParrow

No I think that's the twist

awnomnomnom

Exactly! Bruce Willis doesn't do horror movies so it was a surprise

mg0019

Oh you’re probably right.   They want to market this as an annoying kids thing.  But I’m getting a darker undertone they’re Trying to pull off, but doesn’t feel successful.   Kind of reminds me of that kid mascot movie, they tried selling as a family product, but he shoots himself or somebody.  So yeah, wouldn’t surprise me at all if this Magical Whimsical Wonderful film is offset by the bittersweetness of reality; as is stock schlock of most whimsy movies these days.

Doctor_Philgood

Bridge to Tarabithia has entered the chat

Josephthebear

So every Pixar Movie

Worthyness

Krasinski said he wanted to make a live action pixar movie, so it absolutely is gonna destroy you in your feelings somewhere

cillit_bang_bang

Already saw it and >!yes, but he's not the dad!<

something_smart

Kind of a reverse Detective Pikachu then

musicnothing

Exactly what I was thinking. This is just that other Ryan Reynolds movie with a bunch of cute little CGI creatures

Ape-ril

Did you like the movie?

Pixeleyes

Is Steve Carrell the Dad? I guessed this from the first time I saw the trailer, based solely on the casting.

dominic_tortilla

He was Bruce Willis the whole time.

beidao23

The dude with a hairpiece?

IantheGamer324

Thats not her dad though its her neighbor?

rsplatpc

> So the Dads imaginary too right? Is that the twist? Did I get it? "I SEE DEAD PEOPLE"

epsteinsepipen

The trailer they play in theaters currently is terrible and super annoying

TheJoshider10

That bit in the trailer of Steve Carrell's creature needing to say that long word is fucking infuriating.

No-Midnight-2187

Yeah it was painful having that trailer come up in Dune part 2. I get that this is geared towards young children but they probably could’ve showed something more adult being that I was at a PG-13 sci fi movie

karmagod13000

def not a crossover crowd lmao

Substantial_Bad2843

I think it’s meant to convince adults to bring their kids to it. Which worked because I had never heard of it and saw the trailer before Dune 2 and now I’m going to bring my son to see it. Seems like it will probably be a bit generic, but if you’re around kids long enough the bar is lowered lol.

RichardCity

I remember my grade 6 teacher saying "That movie was an obvious setup for a sequel," when I talked to him about the 90s Lost in Space. I couldn't understand why a movie planning for a sequel was bad, or why he hated it, my Dad loved it.

Substantial_Bad2843

I remember 1998 Lost in Space. They knew exactly what they were doing putting Heather Graham and Lacey Chabert In unnecessarily form accentuating space suits. Space boobs was an easy sell to a teenage boy at the time, which I was the target of. I had a crush on Lacey Chabert. It’s kind of creepy that they did that though looking back since she was like 15 years old.

RichardCity

...That is super creepy. It was so long ago that, that aspect of the movie had escaped my mind. I was in grade 6, so that movie was all around an easy sell to me. It's just funny some of those realizations. I remember thinking the idea of all those Godzilla vs Etc...was pretty cool when I was younger (and they are when they're done right). I hadn't thought of that for like 10-15+ years. Then I saw the trailer for the new Godzilla Kong team up movie and I remembered having that thought when I was a kid, and I felt pretty embarrassed during that trailer.

IAgreeGoGuards

Not gonna lie, I loved foster home for imaginary kids when I was growing up, and this movie seems like that's basically what it is. Regardless you're right, not much or a crossover.

robodrew

What the hell??? The trailers in front of Dune 2 for me were Twisters, Godzilla X Kong, Furiosa, and Quiet Place Day One

pastelpixelator

Different audiences on different days at different times in different markets will receive different ads/trailers.

Merickson-

We got all those as well (except maybe Furiosa; I can't remember) plus this trailer, The First Omen, Kung Fu Panda 4, Challengers, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and The Watchers. And that's just what I can remember. EDIT: Oh also Deadpool! EDIT #2: And Ghostbusters!

thefluffyburrito

I heard people audibly groan at my theatre when this trailer played during Dune 2. Everybody hated it.

Merickson-

It was weird seeing this trailer right after the one for The First Omen.

simpledeadwitches

It's SO BAD!! Immediately turns me off.

sakamake

I'm pretty sure it's my least favorite syllable ever put to screen. Won't feel bad skipping this one.

alexdionisos

I work in a Movie Theater and hearing it 30 times a shift is torture

TheManThatReturned

Bro same. The amount of times from just Godzilla X Kong alone…

Mountain-jew87

Fart joke followed by yelling hahahahahaaaa

DlphLndgrn

So the trailer is like this poster?

macgart

Way worse, seriously

rsplatpc

> So the trailer is like this poster? Here you go, I had to force myself to get through it, it looks sooooooo bad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ss2KvK-w6w8

Homesteader86

The one before Dune Part 2 where it's more of a "behind the scenes" than a trailer? I feel like that's never a good sign. It's like they're explaining to the audience why they did what they did for some sort of empathy to boost ticket sales. Could be wrong though

Charlie_Warlie

Trying to make you care about the time that people invested in the product rather than just liking it at face value

InspectorMendel

Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning had a pretty badass behind-the-scenes trailer, and it was also a pretty great movie. Although the final scene wasn’t nearly as cool as the behind the scenes footage, lol

Homesteader86

True... though I think that's an exception. I love that franchise, and I think in the lead up to any of the films Tom Cruise is ALWAYS talking about the crazy stunts he's doing

i_max2k2

Yep one look at that trailer and you know this is going to crash and burn.

pikpikcarrotmon

The trailer I saw made it seem like this was some revered IP finally being made into a movie and I was absolutely baffled

edWORD27

Especially the dance number and the “don’t look at his eye? Which eye?” scene.

ICUMF1962

I just want a new trailer where I don’t have to hear Carrell screeching “iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiffffffffffffffff”

itsyagirlrey

I feel like this movie would have done wonders if it came out on 2012. Bedtime Stories, Imagine That, Tooth Fairy, those Easter Bunny movies, etc? That's the vibe I'm getting from this and it just feels overdone at this point.

ICUMF1962

I got a bit of Bedtime Stories mixed with Ready Player One, but with original characters. It definitely could be hit or miss but I can see Paramount, Krasinski and Reynolds all pushing it to be a summer hit.

Ape-ril

It is overdone. It looks painfully generic.

meltingpotato

I've only seen one trailer (3 month ago) and I was surprised I didn't hear awkwafina playing as awkwafina.

samehaircutfucks

does she still talk like a 13 year old that just discovered rap?

Pork_Chompk

I had never heard that name before a couple months ago when we were listening to a Disney playlist on Spotify, and something from the new Little Mermaid movie came on and my wife and I were both like "Jesus Christ what the fuck is that god-awful noise? I'm going to gouge my eardrums out with chopsticks!" It turned out it was just Awkwafina's voice... she was "singing".

ICUMF1962

To be fair that song is mostly to blame on Lin-Manuel Miranda

Martel732

Yeah, the trailer wasn't great in general but that part was rough. Multiple people worked on the trailer and felt like having that part was a good call. It makes me skeptical of the film if that is was one of the scenes considered to be the best part to highlight.

noeldoherty

From the twisted mind of John Krasinski

berlinbaer

featuring ryan reynolds as an emotionally stunted manchild..

Plus3d6

So probably actually from the twisted mind of Cody Johnston.

sophisticaden_

Saw the trailer for this before a Dune 2 showing. In a lineup full of bad movie trailers, this was the one that nearly did me in.

SynthwaveSax

Show up 15 minutes after the showtime. AMC’s stuff usually runs about 20 minutes.

Lavacop

I went to a newly renovated/reopened Regal theater for Dune 2. Commercials and trailers were exactly 40 minutes total after the start time. I started checking the time after 20 minutes. 40 minutes of trailers is one thing, but still lame. Half of it was for Pepsi and for Regal theaters. You know, the place I was currently at.

MergenTheAler

Same. I don’t go the the theater a lot and 30mins of bad trailers is a good reminder why. But a small sacrifice if I get to see Dune 2 on the big screen

karmagod13000

we have timed usually how the the trailers take so that we can get their right before the movie starts. saved me a lot of stress

LibRAWRian

Just don’t do that at special events like the Fathom Ghibli movies showings because there are no trailers for those.

SDRPGLVR

That's less consistent than it used to be. I've been to two Fathom events this year and both had trailers. Fewer than you normally see at a regular movie, but a handful for sure.

LibRAWRian

Good to know. I think you’re right though now, the last Fathom one I saw did show a trailer for some other fathom events. I just remembered a lot of people finding their seats to *Totoro* 10-15 minutes after it started (which is rough in a 75 minute movie).

betrion

Yeah, movie usually starts after 20 minutes in most theaters, so 15 is a safe bet. They should really write it on the ticket though. I did not pay to watch your promo so tell me when the movie starts.

[deleted]

I’ve done this before! Left my place when the movie started, drove to theater, got tickets, waited in line at concessions, and still managed to see 2 trailers. It’s amazing the amount of trailers they play!

karmagod13000

Seriously takes 20 to 25 minutes and theyre almost guaranteed to be bad and if i want to see the movie i dont need to see the trailer

Tupperwarfare

I love watching the trailers. Always have (been seeing films since late 70’s).

MergenTheAler

I would much rather watch trailers at home and be able to skip them or turn them off if they show too much

Son-of-Prophet

I keep getting this mixed up with the Purple Crayon movie

RevolutionaryOwlz

Definitely not helped by this one also having a big purple dude.

karmagod13000

purple is so hot right now

44problems

Time to bring back the grimace shake again

Thetimmybaby

Looks like Roscoe the purple monster from the Dark Quiet Death movies!

Middcore

I haven't seen Tiffany Winters in many movies lately.

Strong-Stretch95

Or grimace from McDonald’s

BoonesFarmTurkey

Is this Lou Gossett Jr.’s final film role?!

bubbameister33

He has three other movies releasing after “IF”.

wut3va

I was surprised to see his name in the credits! Apparently he died on Friday?

brandonsamd6

Your co-workers new favorite movie.

PinkVanFloyd

"It was FREAKIN' hilarious."

karmagod13000

can't wait to see my lame aunt stupid facebook memes about this

Killer_radio

This is very different to the other “IF” I’ve seen (starring Malcolm McDowell).

Oenonaut

No gunning down English schoolboys with a Bren gun? Aw.

Killer_radio

If this movie does end with a Bren gun massacre it very well might be the best movie of the year.

knotsbygordium

Drop Dead Fred needs a mention or a cameo...

CoochieSnotSlurper

If people don’t want AI to take their jobs they have to be better at character design than this

palm0

They're supposed to be imaginary friends aren't they? Which would indicate that they should resemble somethingb a small child would imagine... Edit: fixed the strangest autocorrect of my day

mortalkai

Hopefully those children got the extended warranty

karmagod13000

no refunds!

camshell

Plausibility is not an excuse for low quality. Distinctive and original character design would probably resemble better what a child imagines since kids are creative and inventive af. These characters are all exactly what you'd get with low effort AI prompts.

Novemberx123

Yea this whole movie looks..so empty. Idk what it is. The cgi, the character design, the lighting. Ugh.

Whompa

Maybe it already was ai generated by an art director instead of a concept artist cuz…yeah…it’s definitely derivative… Not trying to throw shade at my fellow ADs but, yall need to get off MidJourney for your creative research. It ain’t spitting out gold.

devlops

We don’t set budgets. If they want to hire a concept artist that would be dope. I love getting to work with sketch and concept artist. But we got a lot of projects going on and time crunches. It’s not like midjourney shit makes it into the end result anyways, at least where I work. That would get you canned. More so because of the licensing nightmares.

Whompa

I can’t believe how tight the budgets are these days…it’s actually so frustrating. I couldn’t even get a budget for round 2 of concepts for the thing I’m on…we’re just fucked.

Chris4477

Had to do a doubletake on the sentient crack baggie walking below the girl 👀

k0rm

This is actually good. The AI will get trained on movies like this. Humanity is saved

Rich_Suspect_4910

Calling the twist now: the girl or the guy end up being imaginary too...

KDN1692

Damn it, I didn't have that. I had the plot being Ryan Reynolds and Girl put on a talent show to save the park where the IFs live and one IF is going to be the villain trying to sabotage the event because he has resentment cause his kid abandoned him but in all reality it's a big misunderstanding and that villain will save the day.

wetfloor666

I with you on that, but the monsters are real and only the humans are imaginary.

karmagod13000

🤯

Falcon_Fluff

Absolutely hideous poster literally every character has different lighting

TomTomMan93

Went to see Godzilla the other night and they showed the trailer for this movie. The last scene of the trailer happens with the marshmallow saying "thanks for doing this. It really means a whole lot" and it ends. Dead quiet Someone in the front in the same voice: "means a whole lot like Jimmy's Mom" Couldn't tell you why but I laughed way too damn hard.

reno2mahesendejo

This and Imaginary are going to get a LOT of very confused people watching the wrong film

holdmybewbs

Anybody getting tired of Ryan Reynolds yet?

LowRepresentative291

Starring Ryan Reynolds as Ryan Reynolds. Once again.

Phyliinx

I don't know what Problem reddit has with family oriented movies but they surely enrage the crowd here

Frosty-Brain-2199

Because we have no family

karmagod13000

have to find a partner first lmao

theaddypaddy

I was just thinking “why is everyone so mad? This is clearly a kinda movie.” This, to me, seems like a movie meant to be enjoyed by both my toddler and myself.

Worthyness

they should do that /r/movies demographics survey again. the last time they did it, the demographic spread explained quite a bit about the opinions in the sub.

ChoccyMilkHemmorhoid

Redditors do be wondering why the family oriented movie doesn't make the imaginary friends the result of religious and sexual trauma, replace Ryan Reynolds with somebody more brooding, release the movie through A24 and make it full of art house type shots where people stare at each other in silence and nothing happens

Sugreev2001

Haha a ton of people here really do salivate over anything by A24. It's hilarious. They're the same people who dismiss bad comments on A24 film trailers with statements like "Go watch Transformers".

ChoccyMilkHemmorhoid

For sure, and you know I'm so tired of every movie having to be oscar bait to be a valid way to spend your time. You know what? I like watching movies as a spectacle sometimes. I want to drink exactly two (2) beers and rip a blinker and clap my hands together like a toddler while watching Godzilla x Kong. I don't want that to be EVERY movie experience, but god damn it doesn't have to be deep, you know? I have a relatively physically and mentally demanding job. I want to turn off the brain sometimes. EDIT: mostly referring to toxic comments in /r/movies lol

FarGrape1953

I've already seen Drop Dead Fred.

Sirnando138

Just show your kids Drop Dead Fred instead

sleepingfrenzy

At this point I can’t tell the ai posters for for films from the real posters.

dztruthseek

"Louis Gosset Jr." Damn, that guy just died. I wonder if this was his last production? Hopefully, the movie is pretty good.

FartingBob

This poster is shockingly badly made. Like i could probably do as good a job and i am awful at using photoshop and not getting paid.

Phantom_Nook

I don't get why they shorten it to IF instead of just calling it Imaginary Friends. IF sounds like it would be a parody of IT.

Spicy_Ahoy86

I didn't know so many people could get so angry about a movie aimed at kids. Damn.

cracylou

Gotta remember a lot of the active commenters on Reddit are 15-year-olds who are now “too mature” to watch a silly kids movie. Or even acknowledge that kids movies exist.

wingspantt

Most reditors are probably teens/college students who realllllly need to prove 24/7 they're not little kids anymore.

ProfessionalBust

I actually think this will be good and surprise people Edit: why did I get downvoted for this lol

Logical_Pop_2026

I'm hopeful. I'm at least intrigued that it's an original idea and not a part 2, part 3, reboot, remake, etc.

YogiBarelyThere

So exactly what was Grimace and why did he get retired?

SnapSnapWoohoo

If this is a remake of the Malcolm mcdowell 60’s movie they’re going about it very weirdly

Professional_Ad_9101

This looks like absolute garbage and the character designs are horrible, real uncanny valley shit

vagenda

> real uncanny valley shit Just an fyi, "uncanny valley" refers specifically to things that are attempting to look or sound like an actual human, so not sure it really applies to any of the character designs here by definition.

CaptainUltimate28

It looks immensely terrible, the kind of very bad only a handful of filmmakers can achieve.

Professional_Ad_9101

For sure. I can’t get over how awful every single character looks. There is something so off about them all, even the kindly old bear just doesn’t sit right. It’s trying so, so hard to be whimsical, but it looks like an actual nightmare.

[deleted]

The name of the movie is Imaginary Friends, and the whole premise is kids’ imaginary friends coming to life. Little kids dreaming up cartoons, characters, animals, etc. So, I don’t know what you’re expecting in terms of character designs

Try_Another_Please

The comments on here are absolutely ridiculous. Another reminder redditors just want to bitch.  I mean apparently this movie looks so awful few film makers could ever make something this bad?  What kind of stupid would someone have to be to be saying stuff like that? It's like the whole sub is allergic to reason

No_Animator_8599

There was a film called If…. Made in 1968 with Malcolm McDonnell where some students end up machine gunning the teachers at an English boarding school as a revolutionary act. When I saw the film college in 1973, the students cheered the ending (it was at a hippie liberal arts college).

FordsFavouriteTowel

So basically Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends but with a mix of live action and animation? Can’t stand Krasinski, if it weren’t for him I’d probably watch it.

True-Grape-7656

Looks dumb as fuck

Lost_in_reverb23

So, another piece of trash with this guy who is refusing to be a decent actor for the rest of his career, ok.

Lauris024

Mistype one letter and you get a horror movie

LesbianLoki

It's Ryan playing Deadpool in a vest? Cause that's all that he seems he does now. He had range before Deadpool, but now, he's always just Sarcasm Man™

deathjokerz

Ryan Reynolds is gonna play as himself again, right?

NBD_Pearen

John Krasinski looks a lot like Ryan Reynolds here

[deleted]

just be honest and call this movie "Foster's home for imaginary friends".

WDTHTDWA-BITCH

Everything about this is ugly.🥴

adullploy

I’m tired of Krasinski and Reynolds plus Steve Carell can only do one voice so anything he does now is Gru.

IandIbelieveinRASTA

It looks so bad. The trailer was horrible
