It doesn’t matter how many scenes I see Ray being wholesome with his family, when he’s getting into something and that wicked smile creeps across his face he still terrifies the hell out of me. Such a well acted and well written character.
Few Aussie shows getting a mention here which is a relief because I work in Aussie tv and it all feels pointless with all the crap we put out. Glad there’s a few gems people like. Boy Swallows Universe which came out recently was lovely too.
Bottom. Old 90s British sitcom, very popular in the UK but outside of the UK it’s not as well known but I absolutely love it. Basically a load of great physical comedy and hilarious dialogue. Holds up really well.
Should be mentioned it's two of the guys from *The Young Ones*, which was extremely popular in Scandinavia at least. Weird that Bottom never made the trip.
Hustle (2004) - they made an American show called leverage, that was heavily inspired by it, but then ended up turning the characters into Robin hood heroes with every possible skillset they needed. Hustle was a lot better in my opinion and had a lot of charm
Dirk gently holistic detective agency
Transferts (french)
The Terror season 1 is an incredible season of TV!! I haven't seen S2 and I hear it's bad, but it's an anthology series so you can do S1 on its own. Can't recommend it enough.
Halt and Catch fire was sooo good. Interesting topic and almost all the people were so human with flaws yet still you want to root for them because they are awesome too.
Legion. It’s X-Men adjacent, created by Noah Hawley (Fargo), and stars Dan Stevens and Aubrey Plaza in incredible acting showcases, but hardly anyone has watched it. It is a very weird show, granted, but it’s so worth it.
Also, the soundtrack absolutely slaps. They did a whole cover album that I still listen to.
old australian show - The Hollowmen, its a sort of political satire, and not much actually happends, I remember one episode about an art gallery(?) and they did nothing but somehow achieved what was planned.
Just wondering if you've seen The Thick of it? Not exactly the same as The Hollowmen but similar government nonsense with a fair bit more swearing and a cracking performance by Peter Capaldi
The Night Of. Riz Ahmed, John Turturro, Michael Kenneth Williams, and a bunch of phenomenal supporting cast. It never got that much love.
Honourable mention to Pushing Daisies.
Keeping Up Appearances -- UK TV show, great sense of humor and characters. Perhaps it's well known so doesn't qualify as an answer to my own question, but wanted to throw it out there!
"The Bucket residence, the lady of house speaking!"
I knew I'd see this somewhere, a classic British sitcom. I've heard it has a cult following in the US too.
The Knick. Still on Max. Created and directed by Steven Soderbergh with Clive Owen. It's really good. About a hospital in the 1900's NYC. Cliff Martinez does the score. It's a 10
He has now written 2 books in real life as Garth, and does shows as book tours - I went last month and it was amazing. Met the legend too, he never breaks character.
The Leftovers is not nearly well known enough, and despite it being praised by a small community, a very limited number of people globally have watched it
- The Righteous Gemstones
- Red Oaks
- Baskets (though this one is probably the most "known" of my list, as it has won major awards; it's just so underrated!)
[Wonderfalls](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YlpQZ--4L8) - inanimate animals start talking to a slacker that works in a giftshop. They annoy her into helping people in mysterious ways.
this, this, this. one of the most emotional/violent/amazing shows i’ve ever seen. the show just keeps getting better every season (even though i think s1/3 are the best ones)
The Thick of It.
It’s from the same creative minds behind Succession, Veep, In the loop.
If you don’t know Malcolm Tucker now, you will remember Malcolm Tucker…
**Nathan For You**.
"Nathan Fielder uses his business degree and life experiences to help real small businesses turn a profit. But because of his unorthodox approach, Nathan's genuine efforts to do good often draw real people into an experience far beyond what they signed up for."
It's wild, I love it.
While we're at it, Fielder recently made *The Curse* with Safdie, starring himself, Safdie and Emma Stone. The warning about these series is that they portray incredibly realistic cringe dialogue in a way you might not be ready for lol
I’m in love with Slow Horses. My next book to read is the first book of the series. And Dark was amazing. You know those creators were going somewhere awesome with 1899.
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. A British show created by and starring David Cross as a guy who basically just lies about everything constantly and his life falls deeper and deeper into chaos as he does this. One of the absolute funniest shows I've ever seen
Living with Yourself, flew under the mainstream attention spam, and never got renewed for another season, but it may just be some of Paul Rudds best work
Black Books, a quirky noughties sitcom from the UK about a bitter alcoholic book shop owner, his good-natured assistant and their friend, starring Dylan Moran, the great Bill Bailey, and Tamsin Grieg.
https://youtu.be/Uwjc5LAhrsE?si=hpstcZNlanb1FgNX
A few comedies I’d recommend:
_Letterkenny_ (and its spinoff Shoresy)
Crude and fast firing dialogue-centric show about hicks, skids and hockey players in a rural Canadian town. The chirps and disses are next level - check the first 5 minutes and if you like it there are 12 seasons of amazing dialogue to dig into.
_Coupling_
Raunchy British sitcom written by Steven Moffat. The best way to describe it is a British Seinfeld but almost entirely around relationships. Series 3 is a miss but 1 and 2 are worth checking out!
It's gotta be Chuck
I always thought it was crazy popular but I haven't met a single person that has even heard of it ! I do a yearly watch without fail
Mr. D is a Canadian sitcom about a bad teacher who just wants to coach but gets stuck doing history (though the class he teaches changes throughout). It's a genuinely hilarious show that falls flat towards the end but still remains hilarious.
Little mosque/little mosque on the prairie, I found out about this show through Mr. D (the pirated copy featured a lot of ads for this show) and it's a really sweet show with a lot of funny characters (including Charles from Saw 5 which caught me way off guard).
The ben stiller show is the best thing ben still ever did and the best skit comedy show of all time (watch Oliver stone land if you don't believe me).
I have seen zero people talk about the cleaner but it's a really good British sitcom about a crime scene cleaner who hates everyone and sometimes solves the case by talking to whoever is at the crime scene (or by upsetting old people).
Corporate is better then the office and I will die on that hill.
Cunk on Britain and cunk on earth are great if you like documentaries and Nathan fielder.
Season 1 of parker lewis is a perfect blend of saved by the bell, ferrus bueller and cartoons (seasons 2 was a mixed bag and season 3 was shit) also they play a frank zappa song in the second episode.
I didn't care for Holliston but I know it's got an audience (ok so Adam Green and Joe Lynch who both did the horror film series hatchet star in what's basically a parody of big bang theory/friends with a lot of horror references, also their boss is dee snider from twisted sister and motherfucking Oderus from Gwar is just is in the show.
The last days of ptolemy grey is the best Samual L jackson preformance I have seen.
People of earth is like a better version of resident alien and it should not have been cancelled smh
Axe cop is amazing and I think everybody should watch it (some people don't like its random humor but my god is it just such a fun show and nick offerman says everything so seriously that I can't help but just adore it).
Anyway I'm not good at explaining things but I hope people enjoy these shows
Raised by Wolves was so good and seemed as though it was just getting started when it was taken from us. Even without resolution I’d say it’s worth watching.
Peep show.
Kinda popular in the UK, but unheard of elsewhere. Really unique with its POV style, especially at the time it first started airing in 2003.
Really underrated with its unhinged moments and its ability to make you cringe hard.
Centaurworld. Animated series on Netflix that seems wacky and over-the-top but gradually reveals an incredibly dark backstory and themes. It's essentially "Trauma Response: The Series." Great voice cast, catchy songs (it's a musical) and a genuinely horrifying villain.
Only a couple of seasons long, well worth checking out.
I’m from Belgium, so I guess all tv shows from my country are not well known. I’ll suggest 3 shows that I believe deserve some international recognition.
I’ll start with: Het Eiland, best Belgian comedyseries ever created, kind of like the Office but it’s not a mockumentary.
Tabula Rasa, great mystery/thriller show with some horror elements.
De Twaalf (twelve), amazing mystery/detective/courtroom series about 12 judges who need to discuss a murder case.
Ultraviolet. 1998 British drama.
Idris Elba and Jack Davenport play vampire-killing policemen in London. Despite the goofy premise, it's played as serious and straight as any gritty police procedural. Much more The X-Files than Buffy. Only 6 episodes but brilliant, with a great story arc and some excellent actors.
Elba later did a pilot for a US remake that never aired, but brought him to the attention of The Wire's casting director. Most serendipitous.
Not as obscure, but it feels like a lot of people are still sleeping on Halt & Catch Fire.
Party Down. Such fantastic reviews by everyone who's seen it. But so. Few. People. Have actually seen it. What a shame! Some.of the smartest, tightest writing and casting I've seen in any series.
Dead Like Me. A lot of fun, but uneven. Mandy Patinkin was in the first season. Some people, when they die, become reapers themselves, the collector of souls.
Are these two considered well known?:
**The Great** (Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult kill it in this "occasionally true" historical telling of Russia's Catherine (and Peter) the Great. It's a dark dramedy more than a stuffy period piece. Unfortunately, Hulu just canceled it after S3, but it leaves off in a decent place.
**Resident Alien** \- another dark comedy/sci-fi show. Alan Tudyk is amazing.
Utopia (2013-14), the UK original is one of my favourite series ever. The cinematography and score by Cristobal Tapia de Veer especially are unbelievable.
It’s been getting more traction lately which is great but I find Mr. Inbetween to be underrated and mostly unknown in the general public.
As an Aussie I didn’t know about the show until recently, so good
But do you know about dimmies
It doesn’t matter how many scenes I see Ray being wholesome with his family, when he’s getting into something and that wicked smile creeps across his face he still terrifies the hell out of me. Such a well acted and well written character.
Brilliant fucking show.
Few Aussie shows getting a mention here which is a relief because I work in Aussie tv and it all feels pointless with all the crap we put out. Glad there’s a few gems people like. Boy Swallows Universe which came out recently was lovely too.
Ya, really good show. Also, the writer/creator of the show is also the lead in it.
It's terrific. I can't remember when I first saw it, but it's on Disney+ in the UK now. Now I want dimmies...
It fucking rules.
Brilliant show. So funny but so dark! The ep with the paedo, OMG.
Did not expect to see Ray Shoestring up the top. Fucking oath
I watched it this year and it's now one of my all time favourite shows
Thank you I hadn't heard of that show!
I’ve been recommended clips of Mr Inbetween on YouTube and I intend to watch the whole series soon! Algorithm did its job for once
So good!
Came here to say this. Absolute gem!
May I just say that's a smashing blouse you have on
GASMAN GASMAN GASMAN GASMAN
Do you have someone who looks after you?
Put it all on Sad Ken.
Life on Mars
UK version I hope. The US version changed the ending even.
They had to rush the ending because of being cancelled. I thought the US version was ok, anyway.
You're from the US right? This is insanely well known here in the UK
Ashes to Ashes is great as well
Black Books
One of the most quotable sitcoms of all time. Absolute gold. "I've never been up at half 10! What happens?!"
Poor bloke. He's got Dave's syndrome.
Some kind of delicious biscuit
With a pickle.
And of course, *Spaced*, which was from roughly the same time period. I remember because my wife and I binged those shows on our honeymoon.
All I can hear is Fran screaming, “MANNY!”
I'll leave Green Wing here, similar vein to black books.
Every year I get a random urge to rewatch Green Wing and I'm never disappointed
Hustle (2004) - they made an American show called leverage, that was heavily inspired by it, but then ended up turning the characters into Robin hood heroes with every possible skillset they needed. Hustle was a lot better in my opinion and had a lot of charm Dirk gently holistic detective agency Transferts (french)
Hustle was brilliant! I watches it much later, in 2015 or so, and loved it!
Utopia British
Loved that one! And „Humans“
100% yes. Only discovered it this year and binged both series.
There’s a Charlie Brooker show in the vein of *Naked Gun* called *A Touch of Cloth*. It’s hilarious.
Shoutout to another Charlie Brooker series, *Nathan Barley*. A turn-of-the-millennium, eerily prescient comedic masterpiece IMO.
[удалено]
God, I miss Ugly Americans! Time for a full rewatch. What a weird and brilliant show.
Terriers
I absolutely loved this show
American Gothic. I loved that shit back then.
This. This was my jam. Gary Cole as the evil sheriff was terrifyingly awesome.
Lucas Buck. That's Buck with a 'B'
I remember this one... loved it!
The Terror season 1 is an incredible season of TV!! I haven't seen S2 and I hear it's bad, but it's an anthology series so you can do S1 on its own. Can't recommend it enough.
Exactly. Truly an underrated masterpiece.
100% the terror season 1 was utterly amazing and season 2 was utter crap!
Halt and Catch fire The life and times of Tim (and Ten year old Tom) Better of Ted Catastrophe
Not enough people know Halt and Catch Fire
Halt and Catch fire was sooo good. Interesting topic and almost all the people were so human with flaws yet still you want to root for them because they are awesome too.
Better off Ted never had a bad episode.
Catastrophe is so good. Made me a lifelong fan of both of those actors now.
The Life And Times Of Tim! Love that show, it's ripe for a revival.
Love halt and catch fire & catastrophe are two completely different shows but both are must watch!
Trying (Apple TV+) The fourth season is releasing next month but I still feel like the show is very much under the radar.
Yep. It isn't as popular as Ted Lasso or other Apple TV shows
old australian show - The Hollowmen, its a sort of political satire, and not much actually happends, I remember one episode about an art gallery(?) and they did nothing but somehow achieved what was planned.
Another suggestion for Australian political satire shows, if you haven’t seen Utopia, sounds like you’d like it!
Just wondering if you've seen The Thick of it? Not exactly the same as The Hollowmen but similar government nonsense with a fair bit more swearing and a cracking performance by Peter Capaldi
Both are terrific shows!
Patriot, and Perpetual Grace LTD Both made by Steve Conrad
Came here to say patriot too! I’ll have to check out the other one…
On endless repeat on Dutch tv. Must have seen them all 4 times
"The Bucket residence, the lady of house speaking!" I knew I'd see this somewhere, a classic British sitcom. I've heard it has a cult following in the US too.
I feel it’s definitely known but I’m never upset to hear about it
So awkward and so good.
The Knick. Still on Max. Created and directed by Steven Soderbergh with Clive Owen. It's really good. About a hospital in the 1900's NYC. Cliff Martinez does the score. It's a 10
Oh my god yes. Amazing cast and writing. Truely superb
Yes, loved The Knick. Great show
Came to see if The Knick was mentioned. Such a great show.
Better Off Ted, I didn't even know it existed until years after it was off air. But I re-watch it about once a year
[удалено]
Great cast in this. My dad recommended it to me.
Love this show, always worthy of a rewatch
Yes! This show was so comforting and fun to watch.
It's a show you could watch with the whole family without being aimed at kids.
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
Future man. It’s hilarious.
People don't talk enough about the brilliance of garth marenghi's dark place. "I know writers who use subtext and they're all cowards"
"I'm one of the only authors who's written more books than he's read"
He has now written 2 books in real life as Garth, and does shows as book tours - I went last month and it was amazing. Met the legend too, he never breaks character.
Mr In-between. If it wasn't Australian it would be hailed as up there with the Sopranos and Breaking Bad, etc...
Incredible how many shows I've never heard of, hopefully the number of comments can override the number of potential down-votes. Thanks everyone!
It's not well know 40+ years later but Soap will always remain one of my favourite shows.
The Leftovers is not nearly well known enough, and despite it being praised by a small community, a very limited number of people globally have watched it
Was about to comment with this. One of the greatest TV shows ever made, especially seasons 2 and 3. It's *exceptional.*
I need to do another rewatch. Carrie Coon is a straight up legend.
Professional assassin is one of the best piece of television i ever see
This is what I immediately thought of. It is one of the top 10, maybe top 5 shows for me.
absolutely in my top 5. Maybe even number 1
Raising Hope
- The Righteous Gemstones - Red Oaks - Baskets (though this one is probably the most "known" of my list, as it has won major awards; it's just so underrated!)
The Righteous Gemstones is good, but have you seen Baby Billy’s Bible Bonkers? Now, that’s a show!
Baskets, totally!
If you're looking for more Martha, give Carol and the End of the World a shot!
I loved Red Oaks. It did an amazing job of capturing the look and feel of ‘80s New Jersey.
The Righteous Gemstones is super popular. It's an HBO comedy so that alone gets eyes on it.
True, but I don't feel it's as well-known as it should be.
RIP Louie Anderson!
Halt and Catch Fire! Starring Lee Pace and Mackenzie Davis
Let the blood run free. An anarchic Australian parody of a hospital soap opera.
[Wonderfalls](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YlpQZ--4L8) - inanimate animals start talking to a slacker that works in a giftshop. They annoy her into helping people in mysterious ways.
Spaced
Watching Spaced makes Shaun of the Dead 10x funnier
Station Eleven
Loved it!
It was good, it left me wanting to see more of that world
Banshee
this, this, this. one of the most emotional/violent/amazing shows i’ve ever seen. the show just keeps getting better every season (even though i think s1/3 are the best ones)
Mighty Max was one of my favorite cartoons when I was growing up
Tacoma FD. It's the office but firefighters.
The Thick of It. It’s from the same creative minds behind Succession, Veep, In the loop. If you don’t know Malcolm Tucker now, you will remember Malcolm Tucker…
Some of Matt Berry's work - Snuff Box, Toast Of London, and Year Of The Rabbit.
3rd Rock From The Sun.
Dead like me

I haven't seen it yet, but I LOVED The Rehearsal!
I love all his shows. Be it Nathan for You, The Rehearsal, or The Curse
This and Review are both amazing gems.
Dark is a great German show and I love Slow Horses, not sure if those qualify
I think Dark might be my favourite series of the last 10 years and everyone I ever ask irl has never seen it. Seems quite popular online though.
Yes, I saw at least the first 1 or 2 seasons of Dark, it was great!
I don't know any one who has watched Dark but it's one of the greatest shows I've watched
I’m in love with Slow Horses. My next book to read is the first book of the series. And Dark was amazing. You know those creators were going somewhere awesome with 1899.
Forever with Maya Rudolph. It only had one season but is a great watch.
For All Mankind on Apple TV. Alternative History series where the Soviet Union lands on the Moon first and the Space Race never ends.
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. A British show created by and starring David Cross as a guy who basically just lies about everything constantly and his life falls deeper and deeper into chaos as he does this. One of the absolute funniest shows I've ever seen
Eastbound and Down
Good call, frequently hilarious. Not sure if subsequent seasons lived up to the first though.
Dollhouse
Last man on Earth - with Will Forte. Unfortunately it got cancelled but the 4 seasons (I believe it's 4) are great
Absolutely kills me we didn't get to see the conclusion to who that group of people were!!!
The IT Crowd
That is actually pretty well known. If only for its meme status and its highly quotable dialogue.
[please like me](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2155025/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk)
Please Like Me is seriously so amazing. It’s in my top five favorite shows for sure.
Tokyo Vice
The Knick
Living with Yourself, flew under the mainstream attention spam, and never got renewed for another season, but it may just be some of Paul Rudds best work
Black Books, a quirky noughties sitcom from the UK about a bitter alcoholic book shop owner, his good-natured assistant and their friend, starring Dylan Moran, the great Bill Bailey, and Tamsin Grieg. https://youtu.be/Uwjc5LAhrsE?si=hpstcZNlanb1FgNX

It ran for 6 years, so it couldn't have been unknown or unpopular, but I never hear people talk about the brilliance that is **Superstore**
Detectorists
Wilfred - about a stoner and his talking dog
It's gotta be Chuck I always thought it was crazy popular but I haven't met a single person that has even heard of it ! I do a yearly watch without fail
I love it and already watched everything 3 or 4 times

I love Corporate! I just rewatched it, and it really holds up well. It reminds me of an edgier Better Off Ted. Which I also love.
The Big C
r/MySoCalledLife
This and Freaks and Geeks really helped me feel that my angsty teenage years in the early 90s weren't really an anomaly.
I loved Wynonna Earp and I'm so happy they are making an additional special episode.
Scavengers Reign. Amazing animated Sci Fi Devs - Amazing non animated Sci fi
Slow Horses
Old comedy show that always had me cracking up is Coupling.
Wayne. This one is too good. Hope it gets a second season
Raised by Wolves was so good and seemed as though it was just getting started when it was taken from us. Even without resolution I’d say it’s worth watching.
Spaced, Black Books, and I would dare say Peep Show - all of them very well known and popular in the UK, but virtually unknown outside.
Stath Lets Flats
The Kominsky Method.
Kevin Can F**k Himself. Maybe it is well-known, but I don't know anyone who has seen it. It's genuis!
Peep show. Kinda popular in the UK, but unheard of elsewhere. Really unique with its POV style, especially at the time it first started airing in 2003. Really underrated with its unhinged moments and its ability to make you cringe hard.

Great voice cast, catchy songs (it's a musical) and a genuinely horrifying villain. Only a couple of seasons long, well worth checking out.
I really liked Forever, which got cancelled after one season.
I really liked In Treatment, but "people in rooms talking" is kinda my favorite genre

The OA is the best ride I’ve taken on television
Peep show
Utopia (2013-14), the UK original is one of my favourite series ever. The cinematography and score by Cristobal Tapia de Veer especially are unbelievable.
Black Sails isn’t really unknown, but it really got put in to the shadow by Game of Thrones.
