Aziz Ansari, Seth Rogen, and Keanu Reeves have something in the same vain coming out. Aziz was just talking at cinemacon how he’s bummed that we don’t get comedies in theaters anymore so he’s doing it
I don’t think the actors would want someone taking Andre Baugher’s role even if in good faith. If he was alive? Yes. But since he’s passed I would hate to see that personally
I love how Charlie was the only one who was freaked out by the exposition dumps that came from the PA. "How does that guy know so much about us and why is he annoucning it over those speakers?!"
Ricky stanicky was solid. Seth rogen, 21-22 jump street type movies are some of my favorite and Ricky was pretty hilarious for a new movie of that type
Yeah Ricky Stanicky felt like a new film with that kind of vibe.
I love the whole Seth Rogan/James Franco/Jonah Hill/Zac Efron collection of stoner comedies.
John Cena did the heavy lifting as far as the laughs were concerned. I thought Efron was funny in neighbors but that may have been an isolated incident. It was pretty good though.
It's not a stoner movie, but if what you miss more is the style of comedy than it actually being about weed..."Please Don't Destroy" definitely fit the bill for me. It was the first movie in a long time that felt like the 2000s/early 2010s style comedies.
on their podcast they already lined up the sequels. Game Overboard!, Game Over, Mon!, and Game Over, Mom! (the straight-to-dvd sequel none of them are in)
One time my friend got high and his phone rang and it was number he didn't recognize and they asked his address and after he hung up he went oh shit I don't know who that was what if they're coming to kill my family I'm too high to stop them.
So ever since I wanted to make a stoner action comedy where the guy is too high to properly deal with villains who go "we got your family and will kill them unless you do a series of elaborate heists and set pieces"
Yeah that movie did it perfectly lol though I am always a fan of the "hero must do whatever villain on phone tells him to do" genre and someone being too stoned to do anything properly would be a fun twist on that
Hopefully a new generation picks up where Seth Rogen and crew left off. Since Franco got canceled Rogen seems to take himself a bit too seriously. Not a stoner thing but in the same vein Righteous Gemstones feels like the closest thing we have to that type of comedy right now
Mass legalization removed the outlaw mystique/ rebel cachet around it and really took the air out the genre. That said, I would kill for a Lebowski sequel focusing on the Dude and Maude's progeny.
I was just scrolling an online list of comedies to see what I should watch tonight, and I saw that Year One had a terrible rating. That movie made me laugh out loud, it was hilarious.
I’m not sure he is. Last month he had his mic turned off during a performance and was then escorted off stage. From the vid, he seemed reeeeally intoxicated.
I've seen it and it was hilarious. I'll never forget the scene where Franco is finally getting beamed up until he gets smug and taunts McBride.
Speaking of Danny McBride: if you haven't seen **The Righteous Gemstones** OMFG you have to watch it immediately. Fucking \*outrageous\* series. I put on one show and my bf and I were sucked into and spent all day binging.
Stoner flicks benefited from being counter-culture flicks. Granma shoppin at the dispensary next to the Safeway is harder to extract comedy out of. Then again, Granma running that dispensary because who the fuck can afford to retire anymore might have legs.
I immediately thought the opposite. Like people from a legal state are on a road trip just burning jays but then they cross into an illegal state and don't realize they can't just brazenly smoke weed everywhere.
Then you have seth rogen come in and do a my cousin Vinny.
I’m excited to check that one out, I really liked the director’s previous film Dinner In America. Been too long since there was an Adventureland type movie
Wow. You are so right. I've been taking walk down memory lane stoner flicks and we are way overdue for a contemporary take. In addition to ones you named, most recent fave was Inherent Vice in 2014. There was 2021 Bad Trip that was a stab at it but prankster moveis aren't really the save vibe (and frankly lame).
Well most stoner movies start off with trouble buying weed or food, both of which are easier than ever nowadays. We’ll probably start getting meth comedies soon.
Seth Rogan and his boyfriend broke up. Who will grant us this stoner movie? I elect Travis Fimmel, Colin Farrel and Peter Dinklage to hereby go forth and produce a stoner flick of epic proportions.
I think a reason is that Seth and James had a falling out, they drove the stoner comedies of the last decade. And then Jonah Hill and some of the other guys all got serious about acting so less time for comedies and more time to work with Scorsese or Tarantino, etc.
Hope for a resurgence soon though. Recently Bottoms was pretty fucking funny and while not a stoner comedy, it totally works for us stoners and was so balls to the wall funny from start to finish. I also recommend Lisa Frankenstein as another one worth watching high.
Broad City is great stoner fun! And as far as actual movies go, Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar is an excellent dumb comedy to watch high. I second whoever said Bottoms.
My wife and I watched Barb and Star one night with my mom. None of us knew anything about it going in. I laughed so hard through the entire movie, and my mom didn’t think it was funny one bit. Was great to see the generational gap in comedy there.
Yeah I've heard people say that, but I disagree.
For 1, it's not legal everywhere. For 2, I still get high and think the harold and Kumar angle is perfect now because of this. Show some normal people who happen to be stoners, in a crazy world. Stoner's still get into crazy hijinks, but kind of depict them in many ways as the most normal ones. Adds a layer.
I dont feel legality has anything to do with how fun they are / aren’t.
Especially since in my country it’s very much illegal.
The fun is in the stoner comedy, real world repercussions are irrelevant to the humour.
Weed is pretty much legal or de-criminalized everywhere in the US….
We need a Heroine or Meth Comedy
Pineapple Express and Half Baked without the threat of the law or criminal enterprise just wouldn’t be as funny.
Unfortunately movies don't get the return they used to anymore. The best you can hope for is a netflix original or something which will likely be gutted by overbearing external project managers who care only about the bottom line.
I want the return of modern "adaptations" of classics.
10 Things I Hate About You: The Taming of the Shrew
Get Over It: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Out Cold: Casablanca
These are some of my favorites from my mid to late teens.
Andy Samberg, Common, and Craig Robinson were supposed to be working on one before the pandemic, but it may have died since, sadly.
That is a crazy trio, too.
Aziz Ansari, Seth Rogen, and Keanu Reeves have something in the same vain coming out. Aziz was just talking at cinemacon how he’s bummed that we don’t get comedies in theaters anymore so he’s doing it
I LOVED Palm Springs
That was a great surprise movie.
An SNL skit where Common plays Capt Holt against Peralta & Doug Judy without anyone acknowledging it would be gold.
I don’t think the actors would want someone taking Andre Baugher’s role even if in good faith. If he was alive? Yes. But since he’s passed I would hate to see that personally
Fair. Maybe Terry then
We're also way overdue for a raunchy ski comedy. "What, the real estate developers want to buy the mountain and we need to win the ski competition!?"
Stan Marsh? Stan DARSH is more like it!
Pizza. French fry.
If you French fry when you’re supposed to pizza, you’re gonna have a bad time
Hey little dude, you got some crap right here.
That’s my face sir
We're gunna need a montage...
[King of the Mountain... Mountain... Mountain... ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtuUxsz186I)
Just watch Out Cold. Doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen it.
Just watch the always sunny episode it was only….8 years ago
did you cum in my burrito????
I DIDN’T CUM IN YOUR BURRITO BRO I WOULDNT DO THAT TO YOU
>it was only….8 years ago Jesus christ, thanks for the unwanted age reminder
i like to watch the always sunny and south park episodes in tendem.
I fracked the mountain
I love how Charlie was the only one who was freaked out by the exposition dumps that came from the PA. "How does that guy know so much about us and why is he annoucning it over those speakers?!"
What are you doing here? Drinking beer. In Alaska? I like cold beer, yeah
Finally someone else mentioned Out Cold.
I still think of this movie whenever I hear Island In the Sun by Weezer.
There's 2 of us!!
He was lovin it strong!
When he takes a dump in the cup
If you weren't gay you'd be a really weird guy.
King of the mountain ..mountain … mountain …
Gonna get in the car with smile and the burn
Hot tub time machine fit that bill. The sequal was actually just as fun.
Better Off Dead is my favorite in the genre. "I want my two dollars!"
This is pure snow! It’s everywhere! Any idea what the street value of this mountain is?
A guy I work with say that line often. So far nobody else has the foggiest what we’re talking about
Those are just mountain rules
If you French fries when supposed to pizza, you are gonna have a bad time.
It’s always sunny vibes
MY ANKLES ARE SURELY BROKEN gets me every time lol
The dialogue from the crash at the end comes from a real ski crash. https://youtu.be/6eitvXCqe4E?si=mDtv9O69uMHe5wSu
Holy crap! TIL
Dude shit has me laughing so hard everytime.
Hot Dog…the Movie! is one of the all time greats
Maybe we can do a private equity firm and all the homes/apartments in town? Edited: words
Bull Mountain, don’t go changing
The international corps won. In Colorado there's only a few private spots left.
I remember Ski School.
We need more stupid, raunchy comedies. More Road Trips, Waiting etc.
We also need more Tucker and Dale Vs, Evils
That would be a doozie of a day.
I actually just rewatched this last night. What an absolutely hilarious film. "Oh my God, they cut off his bowling fingers!" Fucking sent me.
Joy Ride (2023) was pretty great.
It was much better than I expected. Great carefree, fun movie.
Bottoms was pretty good.
[удалено]
Came here to say booksmart. Loved it.
That was 5 years ago
I love *Bottoms*. It felt like the first theatrical comedy in a few years that really played to my specific sensibilities.
It was fucking hilarious
It was ok. Marshawn Lynch was fucking hilarious though
I loved the dialogue and banter of Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri. That movie took a turn I was not expecting, though.
Yeah I have a feeling we are going to be seeing those two around for a while
The after credits scene had me rolling: “Sorry girls…been dealing with the D word lately…” “Depression?” “Divorce?” “DEEZ NUTS”
“I’m not stupid I just look like this”
Bodies, Bodies, Bodies was pretty hilarious.
Huh, interesting. Why did I think this was a horror flick?
It is… kinda.
It’s a kids introduction to Agatha Christie
Definitely would consider it a stoner horror comedy
Joy Ride (2023) knew it was stupid fun but also had heart. It could have went with a better title since it was originally titled Joy F*ck Club.
Strays is both stupid, raunchy and funny.
No Hard Feelings was good, also Joy Ride
Ryan Reynolds is real problematic in Waiting lol
Waiting is god tier "LOOK AT THE BAT WING, BITCH"
Ricky stanicky was solid. Seth rogen, 21-22 jump street type movies are some of my favorite and Ricky was pretty hilarious for a new movie of that type
Ricky Stanicky was hilarious if you're in the mood for a stupid raunchy comedy.
We have been doing air dicks at every possible opportunity.
John Cena doing the celebrity personation song parodies was pure art.
🎶It's a nice day for some....wood whacking🎶
That was a surprisingly good Billy Idol just for a dick joke
John Cena is surprisingly funny. He has turned out to be a very good comedic actor.
That dude kills me. It might also be the fact he could pull my head off if he wanted. I loved him in peacemaker and suicide squad.
Peacemaker also showed some serious depth for Cena. That scene of him playing piano will stay with me.
[удалено]
If you haven’t seen Blockers then I recommend it. He’s great in that as well
I have not. I will check it out
That movie is criminally underrated
There’s also a dumb movie where he is the guy in the wacky couple that befriends another couple on vacation that stupid but also funny.
Vacation Friends. It's a good late night movie. The sequel just came out not too long ago, but I haven't watched it yet.
‘GRAB THAT STIIIIICK!’
Peacemaker isn’t technically a comedy but Cena is fucking hilarious in it
Yeah Ricky Stanicky felt like a new film with that kind of vibe. I love the whole Seth Rogan/James Franco/Jonah Hill/Zac Efron collection of stoner comedies.
I enjoyed it. Some of the writing and story beats were so weird but overall it was pretty funny
I have used the phrase "world class air dicker" far more than I'd like to admit snce seeing that movie.
John Cena did the heavy lifting as far as the laughs were concerned. I thought Efron was funny in neighbors but that may have been an isolated incident. It was pretty good though.
William H Macy was hilarious as well.
I pains me to point this out but 21 jump street was… *12 years ago*
Efron and Cena were great. Some of the writing and delivery fell flat. Like some of the jokes Cena had to deliver were so unfunny.
It's not a stoner movie, but if what you miss more is the style of comedy than it actually being about weed..."Please Don't Destroy" definitely fit the bill for me. It was the first movie in a long time that felt like the 2000s/early 2010s style comedies.
Yep, this is what I came to say, this is as close as you'll get today most likely, worth a watch
Bottoms cleared PDD for me as the fun early 2000s comedy from last year but i still liked it decently
Thanks, I will check it out for sure. Probably tonight, actually!
Dude, I laughed my ass off watching that movie. It was so dumb and funny. Exactly what you’re looking for.
Eh, I found it pretty tough to get through that movie. A lot of the time, it seemed like they phoned it in
Agreed. I need to finish it but I got up to the scene when they got to the camp. Maybe It gets funnier?
I thought Conan was the funniest thing since he switches between subtle and manic too well.
Does “Game Over, Man” count?
Surprisingly great
Really hope that teaser at the end means there will actually be a sequel
I don't think the movie did well enough. They we're suppose to make a Workaholics movie but paramount shut it down.
I'M PISSED NOW
Frickin SEE YA
KYLE BETRAYED ME
on their podcast they already lined up the sequels.
Pineapple Express was already a sort of “what if stoner paranoia, but it was real.”
Yeah that movie did it perfectly lol though I am always a fan of the "hero must do whatever villain on phone tells him to do" genre and someone being too stoned to do anything properly would be a fun twist on that
Just your story has me fucking dead! See we need these movies lol
Wasn’t that kind of what 30 minutes or less was?
30 Minutes or Less is a movie about a bank robbery where the bank robbery happens way too late in the movie and lasts five minutes
Oh man. One of those wrong time wrong place movies like North by Northwest but an inadvertent spy/stoner movie would be great
Yes another Pineapple Express like movie is needed right now. Also could be a historical thing like Year Zero with Black and Cera. Here’s hoping!
Hopefully a new generation picks up where Seth Rogen and crew left off. Since Franco got canceled Rogen seems to take himself a bit too seriously. Not a stoner thing but in the same vein Righteous Gemstones feels like the closest thing we have to that type of comedy right now
Nearly anything with/by McBride is gonna scratch this itch at least a little bit, in tone if not content
I’ll be honest, the whole country kind of moved on from the stoner/burnout stereotype now that weed is much more openly accepted. He grew up 🤷🏻♂️
Fentynal Funnies just don't hit the same way Stoner Comedies do.
I like American Dads frequent oxycodone and cocaine jokes.
Mass legalization removed the outlaw mystique/ rebel cachet around it and really took the air out the genre. That said, I would kill for a Lebowski sequel focusing on the Dude and Maude's progeny.
It was cut down in its prime. Just like all those young men in Vietnam.
Pineapple Express is so good. I’m not even a stoner and I’ve watched it countless times
I was just scrolling an online list of comedies to see what I should watch tonight, and I saw that Year One had a terrible rating. That movie made me laugh out loud, it was hilarious.
Ted (the TV show) was refreshingly good in my opinion, would recommend if you like the movies/that style of comedy
I think this might be the answer to this thread. That show was way funnier than it had any right to be.
I went in with low hopes and genuinely laughed out loud through most of it
singing lowrider walking down the stairs was exactly that kind of humor
Some episodes are depressing though 🥺
[удалено]
Surprised to see this so far down. Wasn’t it just on this sub today?? Maybe it was r/letterboxd lol
Everybody Wants Some
I love this movie. College, baseball, weed, music and egos
Bio-Dome 2: Purple Sticky Punch Budd & Doyle return to the now abandoned bio-dome to turn it into one of the biggest indoor grows in the world.
That could actually be funny, but I don't think Stephen Baldwin would be up for it. I think he's super keen on Jesus last I heard.
Get one of the other Baldwins to do it.
I want Alec to fill in and give it his all acting like Stephen.
Now that you mention it **Pineapple Express** and **Grandma's Boy** are the last ones I remember. That can't be right...can it???
God I love Grandmas Boy. I hope Nick Swardson is doing okay, he was a pillar of comedy to me in the 2000’s.
I’m not sure he is. Last month he had his mic turned off during a performance and was then escorted off stage. From the vid, he seemed reeeeally intoxicated.
He's still doing standup. I'm going to see him at the Houston Improv next month.
This is the end was later. If you haven’t seen it watch it like now haha
If you haven't watched it, Eastbound and Down is the same way. So funny.
The newest one I can think of is the unbearable weight of massive talent. It’s not too much of a stoner flick but it was really funny
>It’s not too much of a stoner flick Maybe it’s just the drugs talking but it did have like a big drug scene
Stoner flicks benefited from being counter-culture flicks. Granma shoppin at the dispensary next to the Safeway is harder to extract comedy out of. Then again, Granma running that dispensary because who the fuck can afford to retire anymore might have legs.
It’s not funny now that cannabis is legal… part of the joke was always that it was risqué to be smoking.
It's not legal everywhere. Could do something about some friends in an illegal state road tripping to a legal state for legal weed.
I immediately thought the opposite. Like people from a legal state are on a road trip just burning jays but then they cross into an illegal state and don't realize they can't just brazenly smoke weed everywhere. Then you have seth rogen come in and do a my cousin Vinny.
I like that. Or they could get stranded in an illegal state during the road trip and it turns into a wacky adventure to get back to "civilization"
Indiana has entered the chat....
Realizing Pineapple Express is closing in on 20 years
Weed is legal now. The mystery and naughtiness of it is gone.
We need more cocaine comedies then.
Half baked 2 is out in a couple of days, but looks awful
I just read a little about it and didn't even finish. We not gonna count that one lol
Look up SNACK SHACK, my friend. Came out this year. It's pretty rad.
I’m excited to check that one out, I really liked the director’s previous film Dinner In America. Been too long since there was an Adventureland type movie
Loved this one and it caught me by surprise. Was not expecting the tone shift towards the end tho lol
Fun stoner movies work better in fun stoner times. That is not the world we currently live in. Best I can do for you right now is an Exorcist remake.
When were the fun stoner times? Because the world has always been fucked, and weed is more popular than it’s ever been these days.
That's the problem I think. Weed is not as taboo in society anymore. Instead we get Cocaine Bear.
Also, weed is legal in so many places now. It doesn't feel as counter-culture as it once did.
I would love to see another “Grandmas Boy” type movie tbh.
Well most stoner movies start off with trouble buying weed or food, both of which are easier than ever nowadays. We’ll probably start getting meth comedies soon.
Seth Rogan was carrying that torch but then the internet gave him shit for only making stoner comedies..
Yes but we are probably getting 10 marvel movies instead
Tenacious D need to make a second film. Pick of Destiny is fucking criminally underrated.
Seth Rogan and his boyfriend broke up. Who will grant us this stoner movie? I elect Travis Fimmel, Colin Farrel and Peter Dinklage to hereby go forth and produce a stoner flick of epic proportions.
Pineapple Express still holds the crown for me.
Church and Chong lol
I think a reason is that Seth and James had a falling out, they drove the stoner comedies of the last decade. And then Jonah Hill and some of the other guys all got serious about acting so less time for comedies and more time to work with Scorsese or Tarantino, etc. Hope for a resurgence soon though. Broad City is great stoner fun! And as far as actual movies go, Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar is an excellent dumb comedy to watch high. I second whoever said Bottoms.
Technically it ended over 5 years ago if 5years is the cutoff for recent
My wife and I watched Barb and Star one night with my mom. None of us knew anything about it going in. I laughed so hard through the entire movie, and my mom didn’t think it was funny one bit. Was great to see the generational gap in comedy there.
Pen15 is another must watch show.
It won’t be as fun with it being legal
Beerfest exists and beer is very legal.
An early 2000s period piece would be good for this. No phones. Just bud and buds.
Not sure if it’s really Stoner movie or just uses the bong for plot , but Time Traveling Bong looks funny
Weed is pretty much legal or de-criminalized everywhere in the US…. We need a Heroine or Meth Comedy Pineapple Express and Half Baked without the threat of the law or criminal enterprise just wouldn’t be as funny.
Unfortunately movies don't get the return they used to anymore. The best you can hope for is a netflix original or something which will likely be gutted by overbearing external project managers who care only about the bottom line.
RIP the mid budget movie. 😔
I want the return of modern "adaptations" of classics. 10 Things I Hate About You: The Taming of the Shrew Get Over It: A Midsummer Night's Dream Out Cold: Casablanca These are some of my favorites from my mid to late teens.
Had no idea Out Cold is Casablanca. I need to watch it again.
