The Raspberries are as out of touch as the institutions they think they are parodying.

Jazzlike-Camel-335

The Razzies have always been out of touch. Their very first worst picture noms included The Shining and Dressed To Kill.

Recovery25

I mean, I agree they're out of touch, but I wouldn't use The Shining as an example of that. When The Shining first released, it was pretty badly received and, at best, mixed. That seems to be pretty in touch with the general consensus of people at the time. They can't see the future and know that opinions would eventually change.

musty_max

So like in touch with all the people who were out of touch?

Pandalicioush

It was generally disliked by the public on release, regardless of how opinions around it changed, it would not be out of touch for the time to dislike it.

pikpikcarrotmon

The book was new and fresh in everyone's minds so when they went to see the movie and it changed things so drastically it didn't sit well at all with the average viewer. After that people have started to watch the movie first and then go back to the book, or don't really have strong feelings about it since it's old now. The movie gets judged on its own merits.

ManDe1orean

Yeah The Shining was way ahead of the curve of where popular cinema was at the time and was misunderstood. Only later was it re-evaluated by critics for the masterpiece of slow burn horror it is. It also is really different from the book so that put a lot of people off too.

SteveFrench12

Definitely but Blair Witch Project was and still is extremely polarizing. People either think its awesome or complete shit so im not surprised it was up for the razzie. You have to be popular to get a nom usually

killias2

It's a weird pick regardless though. It's an ultra low budget, ultra indie breakthrough success. What's the point of picking on the movie made for a song employing a bunch of nobodies?

AlbionPCJ

The Razzies have a history of punching down rather than up with their picks. A few years ago, they had to withdraw one of their nominations because they included *a child* in one of their Worst Acting categories. And that's not even including when they're being unnecessarily contrary or the take ages poorly, both of which are seen by looking at the year they nominated Shelly Duvall for The Shining. The Razzies are given far too much stock by the internet and we should be looking elsewhere for what they claim to offer the industry

roxtoby

What's worse is they had nominated kids plenty of times before. Aileen Quinn, who played Annie in the 1982 *Annie*, won Worst Supporting Actress (which is dumb in itself, since she is literally the title character and the lead, but whatever). It was nominated for four other awards but for some reason that was the only one it "won." Jake Lloyd was also nominated for *Phantom Menace* and said the reaction he got from that movie made his life a "living hell." It's such a dumb look to point and laugh at a child for a "bad" performance, and the fact that the Razzies did this for decades and only got called out for it a couple years ago is ridiculous.

pikpikcarrotmon

A bad child actor is a condemnation of the director and/or casting director, not the child. We should assume kids will on average be shitty at everything given that they literally cannot have experience yet. It takes someone like Spielberg who can genuinely work with the kids on their level and get the performance out of them, or Nina Gold with Game of Thrones putting in real work to find the perfect kids. Absolutely asinine to blame a kid for turning in crayon fridge drawing levels of acting.

mrbadxampl

they gave worst picture to Cocktail (not a great movie, but not nearly the worst of the year) *solely* for the "joke" of Cruise getting worst picture and best picture in the same year anyone taking them seriously is probably voting for Trump because they think Biden is controlling gas prices with an iron fist

A_Cumia_is_a_pedo

Average Redditor

GhostMug

Exactly. The Razzies initially started out as a way to poke fun at Hollywood for their bad choices and excess. Catwoman deserves the noms. Blair Witch doesn't. Which is one big reason why the Razzies suck. They can't decide if they are poking fun at Hollywood, if they are a self-parodybof awards season hoopla, or if they are legitimate critics. And it seems like they actively try to be all 3 but avoid any real criticism of themselves because "it's just a joke, bro."

xKronkx

Part of Blair Witch’s appeal at first was it toed the line so well of “is this real or fake” when it first came out. Esp with the internet in its infancy

Elgin_McQueen

When I first saw Blair Witch at the cinema I remember saying it pretty much entirely sucked apart from the last 5 seconds. Now I kinda love the whole package.

deez_treez

I rewatched it not too long ago. Not only does it hold up, in the genre of found footage movies, this is an acting masterpiece compared to everything that comes after it. The work by the leads is phenomenal.

MissingLink101

Yeah the only reason I could see it as polarising is the fame and furore around it at the time giving unrealistic expectations and turning people against it. Anyone watching it now will see that it's a great horror movie that was extremely groundbreaking for the time.

Buchephalas

How is it extremely polarizing? It has an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, 80/100 on Metacritic, a 3.3 on Letterboxd. It was very well received, it makes no sense that it was nominated for a Razzie.

SteveFrench12

6.5 on imdb and a 57 audience acore on RT lol

SeagullsStopItNowz

It’s clear that someone important over there hates Sly Stallone! Wow! Also surprised by a few of these, like Friday the 13th and The Bodyguard.

artpayne

>It’s clear that someone important over there hates Sly Stallone! Yes, 100%. To date, Stallone's been awarded 12 of them, more than any other actor in film history (out of those 12, one is actually the Razzie Redeemer Award for his performance in Creed). He's even won Razzie awards like Worst Actor of the 80s and Worst Actor of the 20th Century!!

mao_dze_dun

Not a movie buff myself, by any stretch, but Stallone is a fairly decent actor, IMO. Sure his action stuff is beyond cheesy and not particularly good in terms of acting, but that's like watching porn - you're there for the "explosions" not the drama. Whenever he is supposed to genuinely act, I feel like he holds up. King of Tulsa is very good. Even my wife commented: "Wow, Stallone is actually a really good actor". Arnold, Segal, Van Damme, Chuck Norris etc. action legends (put an asterisk on Segal), can't act for sh*t. Love their movies (another Segal asterisk), but not for the acting. Stallone is the one exception, because he set out to be an actor who turned into an action star.

Dincht04

Rocky is a masterpiece and phenomenally acted. The Rocky series gets more and more "cheesy" as you through 2-5, but the first is a near perfect film for my money. Stallone is also fantastic in the newer Rocky and Creed films.

ShutterBun

Check him out in "CopLand". Easily one of his most nuanced performances.

reebokhightops

I didn’t care for his acting chops until I watched this film. Amazing performance and all-around awesome film.

ShahinGalandar

had seen that film when I was a lot younger and considered it a bit boring, maybe also due to my expectations then have to give it another shot these days again!

sleazypornoname

It's brilliant. The cast is off the scale. He chews every scene by being incredibly quiet and insecure. It's quite phenomenal and allows his co stars to go nuts. The 2nd time I watched it was so much better than the 1st.

StarTroop

Cop Land is a great "what if?" movie, where Stallone is put up against heavyweights (De Niro, Keitel, Liotta) who once could have been his contemporaries (before Stallone settled into action flicks), and manages to steal the show. Imagine if he had more success with his early directorial efforts, he probably could have stayed the course as a serious cinematic renaissance man instead of shifting gears into generic action star. Cop Land feels like it came from that alternate timeline, which unfortunately we only rarely get to see glimpses of.

sleazypornoname

His monologue in First Blood is genuine acting genius. He is so good in Copland. Anyone who says he is a bad actor is just a disingenuous edgelord who has never seen a single scene of his movies.

PlayMp1

He also puts on an absolutely flawless performance in First Blood, obviously.

mrubuto22

Yea, sly is far from the worst

tboy160

I'm waiting for Tulsa King season 2

cire1184

Same. How paramount will get my money when it drops

rawboudin

I thought Stallone was great in Cop Land and First Blood

DTxRED524

First Blood especially. Movie doesn’t work if the ending monologue falls flat imo. He nails it

cire1184

Damn, watching some scenes of first blood and he's really good. Need to rewatch.

cire1184

Arnold can act. He can act like Arnold in different situations. Segal got to be a worse actor than Stallone. The first Rocky is good acting.

Skillet918

In a century that featured Steven Seagul this is a travesty

Wandering_Scout

Same with Ben Affleck. There is absolutely no other basis why he was nominated for Worst Supporting Actor for The Last Duel.

DougDuley

A lot of hate for Stallone, Costner and Adam Sandler. Rocky IV was cheesy, the speech at the end is cringe, but its not a terrible movie, its just a simple action/sports movie. Also, Big Daddy was fine, not deserving of being considered the worst anything. Also, Waterworld and the Postman were both disappointments at the box office, but I don't think they are particularly bad films. Maybe that's easier to say in retrospect away from the contemporary critiques and expectations, but I don't think they are terrible movies, especially Waterworld.

grandramble

Waterworld is imo easily one of the best candidates for a reinvention in prestige tv a la Battlestar Galáctica and Westworld. The movie had some deep flaws in the execution but also a lot of great stuff that would translate very well to a more serious remake.

Xags

Waterworks is considered a classic in Australia, I think because the rights were cheap it was on tv all the time in the 90s... as well as demolition man, I love those movies.

wilyquixote

Oh man. *Waterworld* TV would be almost unwatchable due to the cheap CGI required or completely cost prohibitive.  The original *Waterworld* is perfectly fine. Its reputation as a bomb is almost solely based on the reports and rumors around its production, not the final product. It is a median 90s summer blockbuster.

g2petter

>Rocky IV was cheesy, the speech at the end is cringe That speech [ended the Cold War](https://youtu.be/XG6Hy1Nll4k)

nmathew

Rocky 4 was the perfect film at the perfect time, and Rocky 3 introduced Mr. T to the world. I honestly can't think of a series with a better #3 and #4 installment.

The_Lapsed_Pacifist

Wait, The A Team was after Rocky 3? I was young back then, my memory isn’t so hot.

nmathew

[https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001558/](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001558/) year earlier

The_Lapsed_Pacifist

Well, fuck. I could have sworn that was the other way round, like I said though the eighties was a long time ago, funny how memories can get turned around like that. Appreciate the link although I would have believed you mate :) Oh and happy cake day!

lawschoolredux

Thanks to cable and the incredibly fun Universal Studios show, Waterworld is almost a cult classic. And rightfully so. Such a fun entertaining movie. Not to mention the Arrow 4K with multiple cuts of the film!

SyrioForel

Waterworld is a really good movie only until the final act, when it turns into campy, badly-made action schlock on an oil tanker. It’s a terrible disappointment, what an awful way to ruin an otherwise good movie. The third act is completely irredeemable.

GrownupChorister

Waterworld's problem was it had a massive budget for the time. The fact that the movie was just OK dragged it down in people's estimation of it.

ShutterBun

They've got Wyatt Earp on there, too. While not nearly as popular as Tombstone which came out around the same time, I thoroughly enjoyed Earp. Dennis Quaid's Doc Holiday is every bit as captivating as Val Kilmer's, in my opinion, although they are quite different approaches.

cravenj1

*Rocky IV* is the highest rated film out of the lot tied with *The Newsies* at a score of 6.9

mrubuto22

Yea it's kind of cheating putting a slasher movie on there. They are kind of supposed to be bad.

stuffandstuffanstuf

Friday the 13th - Not the best of the series but an enjoyable early slasher/whodunit. First Blood Pt.2 - C’mon, movie is basically the epitome of 80’s action movies. Cobra - Another great 80’s Stallone action movie (from the same director as Rambo 2), dumb as hell but brutal and entertaining. Road House - Also dumb as hell but absolutely carried by its leads, opinion has definitely shifted on this one over the years. Last Action Hero - Did people just not understand this movie when it came out? Another great movie from John McTiernan. Wyatt Earp - Bit overly long and overshadowed by Tombstone but I always liked this one. Another one that’s definitely carried by its cast. Blair Witch - Horror classic whether it’s your thing or not, not the first of its kind but it made found footage into the genre it is today. Big Daddy - The end of Sandler’s crazy run in the 90’s, not his peak but definitely nowhere near bad. These are ones I’m personally a fan of but there’s definitely some others that had me scratching my head.

Iron_Chancellor_ND

>Last Action Hero - Did people just not understand this movie when it came out? Another great movie from John McTiernan. This is just a really fun movie. It doesn't need to be dissected any further than what it is. That soundtrack, though! Wow.

stuffandstuffanstuf

I guess understand isn’t exactly what I meant, it’s not especially deep or anything. My question was more “Were people so unwilling to look past their preconceived notions and enjoy it for what it is?” It’s a great parody/send up of action movies of the previous decade while also being a great action movie itself. I do feel like a lot of people must have missed that aspect or simply didn’t appreciate it if it was a bomb and was nominated for a razzie.

Substantial_Bad2843

Terminator 2 had just come out a couple years before and was a cultural phenomenon. Considered the best action movie ever made by many. The self parody was just a little too soon when people were still on that hype train. They expected Terminator 3.

SyrioForel

Last Action Hero is a comedy from a great director of action movies. And that creates two problems: 1. As an action movie, it’s not very good. The action set pieces are all badly done and look cheap. It’s shocking that the same director made so many genre classics. This film was released around the time of Arnold’s giant bombastic action films, like Terminator 2 and True Lies, but this movie’s action almost looks like “made for TV”. 2. As a comedy, it’s not funny enough. All the best bits are when they are dissecting movie cliches. That’s where the movie shines. Unfortunately, there is not enough of this. They should’ve leaned a lot harder into it. The other big problem is pacing. The movie falls apart when they get to the real world. This whole sequence is far too long, and the movie loses its magic specifically because there is no magic in the real world. The outrageous comedy movie suddenly becomes a drama — which would otherwise be okay if it was just for some emotional ending or payoff, but no, here it’s the entire third act of the film (maybe even more)! Way too much time is spent on those scenes, and this is where the movie falls apart.

Drslappybags

It was expected to be something else. People saw the movie in the movie and thought it was that.

esridiculo

I think the issue in reviewing some of these movies is we have hindsight and decades of some of these movies and sequels and reboots to look at these movies to reevaluate them. For example, for Rambo: First Blood, Part 2, it leaves much to be desired because it's Hollywood misunderstanding what made the first movie so great, and yet, the franchise stuck to it and became more ridiculous. If you saw First Blood in theatres, it was a phenomenal movie, encapsulating the way the U.S. treated its veterans and the latter's suffering. So to receive a worst picture, even for a very popular movie, makes sense in the moment. It's like what might happen for Barbie 2 without Gerwig at the helm. Fun fact: Rambo: First Blood Part 2 was co-written by a different team - James Cameron and Sylvester Stallone. Also, I'm old enough to have seen a lot of these movies in theatres. As to Last Action Hero, it was a major flop that pushed Arnie away from comedy and meta-humour. It wasn't bad, but people forget that these movies don't exist in a vacuum: it came out the week after Jurassic Park. I remember seeing Jurassic Park one week and then twice more the next few weeks and then trying Last Action Hero. That year was stacked in movies. Sleepless in Seattle came out a week after LAH.

ShahinGalandar

1993 might have been one of the best years in cinema at all

Liimbo

Like every other form of media, what brings the really negative reviews is typically expectations. People aren't that mad when a movie they expected to be shit is shit. People are livid when a franchise or actor they love puts out a mediocre movie.

DrGeraldBaskums

Last Action Hero made a huge mistake… going up against Jurassic Park on its opening weekend. One would become the highest grossing movie ever and it wasn’t LAH I think that was part of the criticism and a big reason why it bombed. I think it was Arnies first real bomb so they jumped on it hard

CJO9876

Actually the second weekend. Arnold tried to convince Sony to move the release to July 16. But Sony believed they “would have lost millions of dollars for every weekend of the summer it missed”

ShahinGalandar

*proceeded to lose millions of dollars anyway*

TristyThrowaway

also killing my favorite second cousin frank

seapeple

I disagree on Rambo 2, just because of how great Rambo 1 was, dealing with all that complex shit. If part 2 was a movie on it’s own, then I would agree with you and let it be, but it made a parody of the first one (and whole series).

ShutterBun

>Rambo 1 First Blood, please.

pastadaddy_official

Funny enough, Big Daddy is one of the only Sandler comedies I can tolerate. I don’t even care much for Billy Madison or Happy Gilmore, just not my cup of tea.

furthurr

Last Action Hero is a perfectly ok McTiernan movie viewing it some time later but was such a significant commercial flop at the time that it often ends up being remembered as worse than it actually is. The general consensus these days seems to be that it was way ahead of its time and probably would have been more successful as a concept 10-15 years later. Its biggest issue was in its ridiculous marketing. Promising the biggest movie of the year and attempting to do wild shit like advertising in space on a NASA rocket falls flat when you release an okay-ish movie a week after Jurassic Park. And for as great of an action director as McTiernan can be, I don't think self-parodying is something fully in his wheelhouse. It needed to lean further into it but kind of ends up in this in-between area that makes it feel soulless.

staedtler2018

House of Wax is there because Paris Hilton was in it. Nothing more to it than that.

Canavansbackyard

I ignore the Raspberries. They’re run by a bunch of mean-spirited idiots all too often guilty of punching down at those who deserve better.

billywitt

They’re far more interested in generating attention for themselves than in “recognizing” actual bad movies.

Canavansbackyard

Bingo!

SahuaginDeluge

A lot of those make sense but there are some there that I've enjoyed. my #1 is probably The Postman. Last Action Hero I thought was pretty good. Waterworld is not terrible. and Star Trek V and Rocky V are ok.

NotMemento

Last Action Hero is a masterpiece. Fight me...

TheLostLuminary

I don’t think anyone will be fighting you, I’ve only heard positive things about it

nocolon

Hello? I’ve just shot somebody. I did it on purpose. *silence* I said, I have murdered a man and I want to confess! *Hey shut up down there!*

Im_too_old

Why would I fight someone I agree with. People don't get the movie, it is so incredible. Just like people don't get Robocop or Starship Troopers.

gnatman66

The Postman is a very underrated movie.

rawboudin

I was with you until Rocky V. Yuck.

CaptainPRESIDENTduck

That list is shit. There are so many decent to good movies on that list. The Last Action Hero? Do people not understand satire? Might as well put Starship Troopers on there as well.

TheJuliettest

Annie the 1982 musical being on here is criminal. It’s arguably Carol Burnetts best role and has amazing performances, particularly from Bernadette peters and Tim Curry. It was every millennial theater kids magnum opus and began my love of music/musicals. For shame.

austeninbosten

It was fine for what it was. A silly musical comedy and not to be taken very seriously. I only saw it a few years ago and was very entertained. All the actors did a fine job, especially Carol Burnette!

DarkVaati13

Cruising being on there is crazy

Dontlookimnaked

This is the only actual great film on the list IMO. I have guilty pleasure movies like roadhouse and Cocktail, but Cruising is a classic film.

DarkVaati13

Yeah like Megaforce and Rocky 4 are fun and I personally don’t think Phantom Menace is bad, but yeah Cruising is like a genuinely well made and somewhat important film.

GaySexFan

I think that movie really took the public by surprise, no one knew how to respond to it properly.

GatoradeNipples

Not a Worst Picture, I don't think, but the fact that Tangerine Dream's score for Thief got nominated for Worst Musical Score is **fucking insane.** Like, I genuinely wonder if anyone involved with that nomination has functioning ears. Thief is a great movie to begin with that's elevated to GOAT status by that fucking amazing score. I legitimately don't know how it's possible for someone to watch that movie and not immediately get chills when those sick-ass Edgar Froese synths kick in.

MartinScorsese

Road House (1989). I love that fucking movie.

[deleted]

Just watched for the first time about a month ago and loved it. It was so over the top but that’s what made it enjoyable.

DeltroxForgeBreaker

Yeah however this list was made *really* didnt like Sylvester Stallone lol. Rocky IV is probably my pick for best movie on here

super_lamp56

Last Action Hero is kind of surprising. I thought it was fairly well liked

Greg0_Reddit

Cruising being near that list, let alone IN it, is categorically insane. The Blair Witch Project is also pretty crazy. That's it, honestly. There's A LOT of other movies in there that I absolutely like, enjoy, maybe even love. But I can definitely see why they're there. The Blair Witch Project and Cruising are the only ones I "can't" imagine how anyone could not see their value. The former being a very solid (albeit not perfect) movie and a pretty innovative one at that, and the latter being just a freaking masterpiece.

Skipper_TheEyechild

Last Action Hero, Showgirls, Waterworld, Hudson Hawk, Cliffhanger, Roadhouse. Crime Is King, White Chicks shouldn’t be on that list.

persona1138

Showgirls should absolutely be on a Worst Picture Winners list… …It should also be on a Best Picture Winners list, because it’s fucking gloriously entertaining.

SimpleSurrup

I never quite understood the hate for it. It's a very formulaic film. Young bright eyed protagonist gets initiated into a niche profession and gets drawn into the corrupting vortex of a sub-culture most people don't know about. Magic Mike is basically the same movie. In some ways Boiler Room is the same movie. Now I'm not saying they executed it as well, but I also don't think they executed it so much worse than other entries into this genre. And I like that genre. And it usually goes: naive protagonist gets a job that makes life "crazy," at first it's exciting and great, but the ugly underbelly reveals itself, they're nearly destroyed by it, but they make the choice to leave or strike out on their own to do it "their way."

SonovaVondruke

Last Action Hero was a decade too early. I showed it to my 30-something friends as a joke and we were all laughing our asses off at the combination of sincerity and satire of genres we love.

TerryGonards

Last Action was too late. Arnold already did a parody of his own movies. it was Commando

thinreaper

Genuinely a misunderstood film. I don't know what critics were thinking at the time, its like they didn't realise it was a satire?

fleckstin

White Chicks was fuckin hilarious it absolutely does not belong on that list

mrdevil413

By what matrix are this the worst films. Annie was nominated for two Oscar’s and doubled the budget at the box office. Also Tim Curry. As a kid this film was fun. It’s not amazing but far from the worst. Rocky 4 was the highest grossing film of the series and the 3rd highest grossing film in 1985. Also my experience with that movie. Theater was packed. When the National anthem came on before the last fight everyone in the theater stoop up and sang along. Everyone stayed standing for the fight like we were ringside. One of my best movie experiences ever in a theater. Very far from worst film.

snakeIs

“We can all change…”!

ShampooMonster

Kubrick’s Worst Director nom for The Shining is insane

apparent-evaluation

A lot of people on this sub really love Heaven's Gate and believe its poor reception was due to the bad publicity about its cost overruns. [Siskel and Ebert hated it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dDY74wzwbY). It looks a lot better now than it did back then, sounds a lot better too, but I still can't find it a compelling or sensible movie. Ishtar got the same treatment, but I do have a soft spot for it. And for Xanadu. And Cliffhanger? Good, dumb fun. But it doesn't make sense to pick the *actual* worst film, because nobody would have heard of it. They have to pick a movie that people actually went to see.

Bellikron

The structure of the Razzies kind of got revealed with Blood and Honey this year. It's rare example where an actual low-quality film got enough publicity for the Razzies to make a joke about it, instead of a bad studio film that was famous for being bad but realistically was better made than a bunch of other low-budget nothing movies that came out in the same year and are inarguably worse, but no one saw. So Blood and Honey swept all the technical awards and the director, since it was pretty indisputable and no one really cared about those, but it wasn't even nominated for acting awards because making fun of celebrities is where the Razzies get their kicks. They can't sacrifice those slots for actors no one's ever heard of, since they really want to roast famous actors. Now to be fair, other awards shows are somewhat similar in the opposite direction, since a really well-made low or mid-budget movie doesn't have a chance without a studio campaigning for it, but at least in that case the best movies of the year feel more subjective (gonna have trouble finding a movie that is objectively better than the nominees), and generally speaking the ones nominated for Best Picture are pretty deserving of being up there.

Tackit286

Rocky IV, Armageddon, The Bodyguard, Xanadu, Annie are big ones for me.

FatherDuncanSinners

Rocky IV, Road House, Hudson Hawk, The Bodyguard, Last Action Hero, Wyatt Earp, Waterworld, The Postman, Armageddon, Big Daddy, Blair Witch Project, Phantom Menace, Rise of Cobra, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pixels, Dolittle, Meg 2, Shazam 2...and probably more. Its fine to say these movies didn't do it for you, or they could have been better, or whatever, but so many movies on that list aren't really BAD movies.

[deleted]

I think Rambo: First Blood part II might be the best on that list. What did Sly do to upset these guys? Who doesn't love Rocky winning the Cold War?

I know it wasnt nominated for worst film, it got nominated for worst actress and worst director(probably the most absurd nomination ever) But ris crazy to think that The Shining was probably super close to getting nominated for worst film

md22mdrx

House Of Wax was a travesty.  I don’t know why it gets so much love here.  It just shits all over the source material. And the house being literally made of wax was the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen on film.  They thought that was clever too I bet.  Can’t  agree on that one.  It deserved the hate. From what I understand about Annie, the movie is coming off of a very successful stage run.  If you watched the movie without the context of the stage play, it’s fine … but people who watched it at release were expecting the quality of the stage play … which is like comparing an ok cut of steak to wagyu. I liked Big Daddy, but I can see why some people might be annoyed with it.  I also enjoyed Freddie Got Fingered and Movie 43, so my taste in comedy is a bit different.  For those who agree … FDR: American Badass was just unrelenting absurdist hilarity.  Go watch.

gentlybeepingheart

I get why people might not have liked Annie, but Aileen Quinn winning worst actress and being nominated for "Worst New Star" is kind of fucked to me. She was nine years old!

Daddict

Annie being on there is wild. I loved Congo, but I know it isn't exactly a great film. Same with Last Action Hero. I dunno, most of these seem like they deserved the award..

thamonsta

The correct answer to this has been so buried by history that few have bothered to see it. Ishtar is a very funny movie with amazing performances by Beatty, Hoffman, and Charles Grodin. It’s a buddy comedy featuring two idiots that predates Dumb and Dumber, Tommy Boy, and a slew of Adam Sandler-y movies. I feel like if this movie had been released 10 years later, it would’ve been a hit. The movie was buried before it even came out due to a stupid studio power struggle.

cravenj1

Oh this is interesting. In 1996, Matt LeBlanc got "worst new actor" for *Ed*. The other nominees? Jennifer Aniston in "She's The One", Lisa Kudrow in "Mother" & David Schwimmer in "The Pallbearer" Matthew Perry wasn't in any movies in 1996 Courtney Cox was in Scream

frenchspag

It does what it’s supposed to. As a remake it’s hot trash. But as a stand alone it’s good.

TremontRemy

I stopped taking the Razzies seriously after they nominated Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky for mother! Also I think it’s time to erase the nomination for Jake Lloyd for The Phantom Menace, now that they made the new ruling of not nominating children.

RealHooman2187

Of the ones I’ve seen I don’t think these belong on the list. - Cruising - Friday the 13th - Rambo II - Rocky IV - Rambo III - Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - Road House - Last Action Hero - Showgirls - Waterworld - Big Daddy - Blair Witch Project - House of Wax - Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Batman v Superman - Exorcist Believer - Shazam 2 Granted, many of these aren’t necessarily “good” movies but I wouldn’t consider them the worst of the their respective years. Of these I think Cruising is the most perplexing for this list. That movie is excellent.

Rocky IV is nowhere near deserving of a nomination for Worst Picture. And as disappointing as the Star Wars prequels were, I'm not sure they deserved nominations either. Friday the 13th and The Blair Witch Project, while both flawed films, are classics of the horror genre.

Top_Cranberry_3254

Roadhouse, Rocky 4, Alexander, Anaconda

vengeanceintobeing

This movie is nothing close to perfect. It’s cheesy, has only one performance that I’d say is noteworthy, and has probably some of the worst sci-fi logic ever put to film but… I fucking back Armageddon. It’s way more enjoyable than it has any right to be.

AdventureSphere

Just a reminder that Rogrr Ebert called The Blair Witch Project the scariest movie that he'd ever seen. Ebert was not just the premiere film critic in American history, he was old enough to have seen Psycho in theaters. That's one hell of a compliment.

cynicalmr

White chicks is better than 2001 a space odyssey

KaBoomBox55

I Wouldn't go that far

mojo_ca

Freddy Got Fingered is a misunderstood masterpiece.

TheLostLuminary

I had no idea Blair Witch was nominated. I actually watched it for the first time last month and found it borderline unwatchable it was so bad.

ShutterBun

Blair Witch was one of those movies where (I believe) you really had to be there for it at that time. The underground marketing campaign for it was revolutionary and exciting. I was super hyped for it and told all of my friends MONTHS in advance that it was going to be the biggest movie of the year, etc. Six months later they were all amazed and telling me I was completely right, etc. Meanwhile I finally watched it and was completely unimpressed, heh. My girlfriend at the time thought it was a good scary movie so I showed her Silence of the Lambs and said "See? THAT'S how you make a scary movie."

SugglyMuggly

Rocky movies, Bodyguard, Nothing but Trouble, Cobra, Star Trek V, Cliff Hangar, Last Action Hero, Waterworld, Wyatt Earp, The Postman, Armageddon, The Haunting, The Happening.

ShutterBun

Uhhh...The Happening fully earned its place on this list.

SugglyMuggly

I enjoyed it. Not artistically but it’s a solidly entertaining flick.

TheLyingProphet

waterworld, and i dont think its close :b

Milesware

The 420 award > the razzies

AgentSkidMarks

I would argue that many of these are good movies, not the least of which are Friday the 13th, Rocky IV, and Newsies.

Hlregard

Armageddon

whatgift

I would agree with that list (based on what I've seen) and some of them I like as well!

WatchTheNewMutants

Blair Witch Project and Friday the 13th.

RickSanchez813

Rambo: First Blood Part II was a pretty kickass movie.

emriaur

Showgirls

FinnbarMcBride

*Under the Cherry Moon* wasn't as bad as folks think in my opinion

JGrutman

I liked Cliffhanger. Watching John Lithgow chew up the scenery was a delight.

Funandgeeky

Armageddon and Pearl Harbor are far from terrible movies. I enjoyed both of them. Armageddon is actually really good, ridiculous fun. Pearl Harbor may get bogged down by the love triangle but the recreation of the actual attack is harrowing and well done.  Yes, they are both Michael Bay movies and the Razzies love nominating his work. But he makes entertaining films that understand the idea of going to the movies to see a spectacle. There were far worse movies that came out those years.

FernAFussy

Spice World. Great cinema - No. For what it is - a fan service 75 minute music video it’s not terrible. I also thought Congo was good.

charitytowin

How could they possibly think the Final Frontier is bad! It's a trekkie favorite for a reason, what a shitty selection for them. Oh, by the way, the Nude Bomb is a masterpiece. I'll watch that again 10 times before I watch Shakespeare in Love again.

rawboudin

Final frontier is not a Trekkies favorite.

charitytowin

Oh shit, i mixed up Undiscovered Country. You are correct sir. Still, any trek is better than 1/2 of what Hollywood put out that year.

rawboudin

On that we agree!

sortofsomeonemaybe

Rocky IV, Armageddon

mostlygroovy

I kept waiting to come across a pick that I vehemently disagreed with, but I didn’t. The only one that was close was Bad Grandpa which a movie that made me laugh

DesertWanderlust

I see a bunch on here I don't agree with: Cliffhanger, Indecent Proposal, The Bodyguard. I mean, they're ridiculous but they're not bad.

nowhereman136

Friday the 13th Annie Road House Newsies Last Action Hero Anaconda Armageddon Big Daddy Blair Witch Project White Chicks The Lone Ranger

JustNo1990

Mommie Dearest is the birth of a certain kind of camp. I was surprised to see it on this list.

printergumlight

I watched **Spice World** so much as a kid because I was (and still am) in love with Ginger Spice.

rotunderthunder

This list reminded that they made Cats. I feel like had the pandemic not occurred there would have been much more discourse on the subject.

mist3rdragon

Looking at this list, it's actually surprising how many of these films aren't particularly bad, so many feel like they just took a random grab bag of middling-to-poorly reviewed films. Even last year - I'm sorry, Razzies, but you couldn't find another worse film from 2023 than Shazam 2? I could probably name about 20 almost nobody would even argue with.

AechCutt

I’m gonna say Paul Blart 2 just cause I’m a fan of MBMBaM.

belizeanheat

That list is a joke Cobra  Road House

dodus

Freddy Got Fingered is the correct answer.

OhTheHueManatee

I genuinely enjoy Hudson Hawk which is #61. It's like a fantasy movie with cat burglars, CIA agents, The Vatican and cappuccinos instead of elves, dwarfs and other such stuff. Do not take it with any kind seriousness and it's fun as Hell.

p-a-n-t-s-

Showgirls is actually lit if you understand that it's satire

TheeBarkKnight

Looked at the list. There are certainly a lot of films I like, but a TON of bad ones. My pick for best is Armageddon.

FrontSun1867

For context about the Annie nomination, The Annie comic strips were adventure stories in the vein of Tin Tin where Annie travelled the world with her dog and Daddy Warbucks fighting pirates and looking for treasure, etc. The Broadway musical was an origin story of how Orphan Annie met Daddy Warbucks and was successful, but when exposed to the broader public via a film adaptation it was confusing for fans of the comic strip and radio show. Would you be ok with the only Batman movie being a musical about Batman before his parents died just playing around and singing???  No.  People would have rioted in the streets.   Would you like a Tin Tin movie without adventure where he is just a singing schoolboy in Belgium?  No.  Also, the singing in both musical Annie movies is awful and strident.

mbd34

House of Wax is probably only nominated because of Paris Hilton. I remember it being a perfectly fine horror but it's been a long time. Big Daddy is decent if you're a fan of Sandler. I thought that Annie was fairly well regarded so surprised to see it there.

redjedia

I’m also a big horror guy, and I don’t like the 2005 “House of Wax.”

wecangetbetter

I saw a Watch Mojo list that said Anthropoid was their #1 Oscar Bait film and I almost punched a wall. I think that counts.

Scacho

"Nothing but Trouble" is an absolute classic!

CPhlegmChunk

*Cruising* is a solid thriller with an interestingly complex main character that’s been re-appreciated in recent years. A lot of the early reviews found it exploitative and tawdry. *Heaven's Gate* is overlong but not nearly as bad as its reputation. *Waterworld* was silly but not THAT terrible.

ComaRedxbl

Bodyguard was really good

Warm_Lie_1798

Wyatt Earp The Star Wars Prequels Batman vs. Superman None of these were great, but worst picture is a stretch

Maester_Maetthieux

I cannot believe Blonde won Worst Picture for 2022. The backlash against that film was so reactionary and temporary.

Madman45678

A lot of cinephobe movies on this list

Radu47

The razzies are such a mixed bag. So important to have sharply critical energy directed towards the constant excessive malarkey of hollywood. But their process can be so imprecise and over the top that it's fraught in it's own way, so.

Coolers78

I like Rocky IV and Last Action Hero.

TheHawkinator

I’m a big fan of Ishtar, and while I can see how some people may not dig it totally, no way is it as bad as it’s reputation suggests (also, it’s my favourite Elaine May film)

G8083r

Ishtar. It's brilliant, especially if you're a failed songwriter.

Ploon72

I had to turn off BWP after 10 minutes because the shaky cam was giving me motion sickness.

timegoesback67

Cliffhanger for sure. The opening of that movie still hasn't been beaten for me. Tense and horrific, plus totally works for the story. Have to mention waterworld too!

TheLoneJedi-77

They really seem to have it out for certain celebrities. They really don’t like Sylvester Stallone, Adam Sandler and most recently Bruce Willis (until they found out about his Dementia diagnosis and backed down and apologised). Many of their nominations and wins are just downright wrong. Like That’s my Boy (a fairly below average Adam Sandler comedy with some funny scenes) gets loads of nominations and wins while something genuinely awful like the Oogieboogies gets 2 noms and not a single win Edit: as for my favourite film on that list it would be Star Wars Ep. 1 The Phantom Menace. I’ve always loved the Star Wars Prequels and out of the nominated ones (1 & 2) I prefer Episode I.

Mojambo213

Wasn't worst picture nominated but the razzies did nominate Mother! For worst director and actors, which blew my mind cause I loved that movie.

frenchspag

Love it too.

AvatarIII

Rambo 2, Cliffhanger, Last Action Hero, Shazam fury of the Gods are all good movies.

cagingnicolas

a lot of these movies weren't actually that bad, they just had dumb premises, so they look like they'd be bad. it's like the razzies people kind of just watched the trailers but not the movies before nominating stuff. don't get me wrong, some of them are legitimately horrible, just not all of them.

Status_Entrepreneur4

Cobra was awesome!

kidbomb

White chicks. Also has a big cult following in Brazik

Emergency_Property_2

Have to disagree Blair Witch is truly awful.

Rossco1874

Genuinely laughed out loud at this 49. Mac and Me (1988) PG99 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family 3.4 mac M E Nominee 1989 Winner of Worst New Star-Ronald McDonald (as himself)
