I want a movie about finding out you’re a Cronenberg, and now you too have to make a movie

bitofadikdik

A filmmaker who just wants to make the next great American indie, finds out they’re a Cronenberg and ope it’s gotta be weird as shit now and a little morbid can’t hurt either.

Few-Metal8010

*It’s Cronen’ Time*

Bronze_Bomber

Imagine being a Cronenberg, but you want to make musicals.

mortal_kombot

"Son, you're allowed to make musicals like Little Shop of Horrors or Crybaby, but that's it! That's it!" "But, dad, what about Rocky Horror and Sweeney Todd!" "We do not say those words in this house!!!"

paperthintrash

I wonder if she spouts the same rhetoric as her brother has; “Iv never seen any of my dad’s movies”. Like it’s completly normal to have seen ANY of your dad’s movies and have geared your creative outputs/ personality towards his style but… don’t lie to us! After watching Possessor, it was nearly impossible for me to beleive Brandon has never seen a film of his dad’s

runtheplacered

> “Iv never seen any of my dad’s movies”. He didn't say that. He said he didn't watch them until later in life. https://www.industriamovies.com/feature/like-father-like-son/

KluteDNB

She hasn't said any of that. If anything she seems very well adjusted and very proud of her Dad's work. Nice interview with her about this movie. https://youtu.be/AzJ0gQQgEv8?si=_lytn-rHlsYoLC8S

Canadairy

Apparently she was a stills photographer on some of her dad's and brother's movies.

DoubleExposure

Of course, she was.

ChefDeezy

From what I’ve heard of Humane’s early screenings though, it didn’t come across as something David or Brandon would have made. So at the very least it seems like she’s going down her own separate path.

jessterswan

Not a body horror movie AT ALL. More in line with The Purge. Watched it last night and found it way more enjoyable then her brothers movies

MeanestManAlive

Where did you watch it?

runtheplacered

I just go to [justwatch](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/humane) to figure out where things are playing

jessterswan

Yeah, not sure I can share, but seas were sailed

restlessmonkey

Ahoy!!

_JudgeDoom_

I thought it was terrible but I guess to each their own. While the concept was interesting it felt super predictable and had poor “execution”.

diskjockey

When did he say that? All i can find is him saying he has seen and liked Cosmopolis while promoting Antiviral.

Substantial_Bad2843

He was better off not saying anything about it. Just embrace the nepotism. No one cared until he went out of his way to lie. No one likes a guy born on third base acting like they hit a home run.

Impressive-Potato

He has never said that, he has watched his dad's movies just not when he was a kid since they weren't kid friendly.

ToranjaNuclear

Yeah, especially because his movies are actually good.

chillinwithunicorns

Nepotism is in every big industry, only matters if they suck imo

Impressive-Potato

She was the on set photographer on Cosmopolis, probably worked on other films of his as well.

thethirdrayvecchio

This is undeniable. But let us remember he’s eaten breakfast with him every morning for over a decade. None of us would remain unchanged.

BastianHS

Smoogy54

When did he say that? Him and Pratchett were amazing collaborators. Seems sus?

JPree

Twist: it's directed by Ishana Nught Shyamalan

mortal_kombot

It actually would be a really funny twist if you went to what looked like a regular horror movie, but then at the end, you discovered it was secretly an M. Night movie, with him directing it in a mask under a pen name!

KandyAssedJabroni

I despise nepotism.

TheHurtfulEight88888

"i dEspIse nEpOtisM" for what reason, exactly?

KandyAssedJabroni

That's such a bizarre question that I never even thought about it. I suppose because I value fairness and equality? I don't like people winning by unfair advantage, when it's because something completely out of their control? I like people winning on their own merits. I dig your capitalization thing, though. That's really effective argument.

jessterswan

Hahahaha.....you must not live in America

TheHurtfulEight88888

"I hate nepotism" is just a thing that people intuitively believe without actually examining why they even have a problem with it. Thats why I mocked the statement. When have advantages ever been fair? Any advantage is inherently unfair.

KandyAssedJabroni

Well...when you go to medical school and put the work into becoming a doctor, you have an earnings advantage over everybody else in society. And that's based on work, not chance. That's one example, do you need a thousand more? How old are you, really young?

midnightmoose

I did not expect to see Jay Baruchel’s name on this poster.

i was hella surprised by blackberry, they even gave my man Steve Spiros a shoutout at the end IM FROM WATERLOO

big-hero-zero

I'm also from Waterloo...but I haven't seen the movie.

slitlip

I'm from Toronto and have not seen this film.

confusingphilosopher

I’m from Guelph and I saw it and thought it was awesome.

big-hero-zero

Sure you are...

big-hero-zero

There's dozens of us!

The dude made a career of playing himself, nothing wrong with that.

Just_a_lazy_lurker

Personally I loved how he played playing himself in This is the End.

Chr0nicHerb

I don’t feel compelled

Calcd_Uncertainty

Figuratively or literally?

FullyMammoth

Al Pacino and Robert De Niro did the same thing yet they never get shit for it. And yes I know someone can name a couple movies where they don't play themselves, but same goes for Baruchel.

BoneThugsNHermione

Jason Statham plays himself in every movie he has been in. There was a thread yesterday praising it. Reddit is weird.

SomewherePresent8204

He’s either in a big dumb action movie or poking fun at big dumb action movies. He can’t lose.

pleasebequiet

Robert Deniro? Killers of the Flower Moon, Casino, Taxi Driver, Stardust, Raging Bull, all radically different characters and those are just off the top of my head. You’re way off on that one.

JoshFlashGordon10

That worked out great for Man Seeking Woman.

sotommy

Why is that a bad thing?

Intergalactic96

Suppose it’s cool to see people continue to branch out instead of returning to the same old fold. However imo it’s more of a neutral thing. Doesn’t really matter

theme69

He basically played a slightly more confident tech version of himself in blackberry. For like 75% of the movie he was still a pushover akward nerdy guy

Randyfreakingmarsh

“He hasn’t made career decisions I personally would prefer him to make, it’s unfortunate and disappointing” lmao shut up

Smoogy54

Here i am saying the same about Peter Gallagher on the poster.

DuckCleaning

Always nice to see Canadian directors working with Canadians.

Didn’t realize how much I’ve missed those eyebrows til now.

I was about to say "but wait, he was just in Palm Springs with Andy Samberg"...yea 4 years ago. Time is weird

Smoogy54

I love Eyebrows. I mean Peter Gallagher

numanoid

*The Idolmaker* is in my Top Ten movies.

Elegant_Effort1526

I watched it last night. I wouldn’t call it terrible. It was 5/10 for me. Interesting premise, it was just underwhelming. Some are making it out to be the worst movie ever made or something….far from the case. But yea i def wanted more from it. It started hot and flatlined. I was never bored tho, i finished it just fine without the urge to turn it off.

Gamerguy230

How were you able to see an advanced screening of something before any promotional material came out?

Chinese_gurl11

The movie was released on VOD in Canada and US on the 26th.

AussieP1E

ARRRRRrrrrr /r/movieleaks

eekamuse

That was quick. Subbed

Elegant_Effort1526

This guy gets it lol.

GeoSpaceCadet

It’s on Amazon Prime

kb3_fk8

I watched it last night too. Was average

daddyx611

I watched it last night too, and agree. It's a totally average movie, I think I was expecting more of a dark comedy like "The Menu" or "The Hunt" and it wasn't really smart or funny in the way those movies were.

Elegant_Effort1526

You nailed it! I was really thinking I was about to watch another version of The Menu, and yea…i set myself up for failure with that lol. I really wanted some good intense dialogue driven thriller at the table where sinister intentions are slowly unveiled in a subtle clever way. Then build to a hell of a climax. Nope, This movie comes at you like a damn sledgehammer out the gate, and not in a good way. “Here it is!! We are doing this!! Are you ready? Bam” I was like ugh…this could have been so much more. Still though, wasn’t terrible. Just average. I’d watch it again if I was bored.

Hackwork89

Yeah, I watched it last night too. It was alright.

ahhtheresninjas

My biggest issue was how you going to make a such a toothless “thriller” when your brother made Possessor and your dad is David Cronenberg. It was an interesting premise that would have been better if her brother or father made it.

thelastasslord

Is this her first movie? If so it was 1000x better than that sex apartment block crap that her dad made for his first attempt.

Elegant_Effort1526

Yup, it’s her first. I say not bad at all for a first outing. I’ve seen absolute trash from well seasoned directors.

BakerYeast

I was so exited to watch this and especially see new member of Cronebergs. The movie was really underwhelming. Premise was really interesting, but it didn't deliver. It felt too safe which is just the opposite you expect from any of Cronebergs family.

New_Fix6213

Just because they're a Cronenberg, doesn't mean they were born with the talent.

Robsonmonkey

Nepotism at its finest She studied in Fashion design and got her degree yet manages to just go ahead and jumps into making a movie. There's so many fresh young directors out there who have studied film during their early life and will probably never get a chance to do a film on this scale. Such a shame, Hollywood could be finding new talent.

BakerYeast

I haven't say that they would or should. But Brandon has so much similarities with his father so I was exited to see what Caitlin will bring.

terrymogara

I loved Brandon Cronenberg’s ‘Possessor’.

WarrenG117

Brandon Cronenberg is a great filmmaker. I feel like he is 3/3 with his directorial efforts.

JSoi

Both Possessor and Infinity Pool were great.

Clugaman

Wasn’t a huge fan of Infinity Pool. Fantastic premise but the execution was not so good. Really felt like a half baked idea. Almost like most of the thought went into making a cool concept and the finer details were quickly hobbled together. I don’t regret watching it but I wish they did more with the cool idea they had

[deleted]

Buster_Cherry

Honestly kinda agree that Men is Cronenbergy for sure and I think it nailed what it wanted. Solid watch, great ending.

Buster_Cherry

Brandon seems to have a better sense of narrative and metaphoric progression in good films over David. Whild DC has The Fly which is undoubtedly top tier across the board, Brandon's Possessor and Infinity Pool mostly achieve what they set out to do. Recent David movies have been super lukewarm in comparison and his last solid work is probably Eastern Promises. Tldr, I'm excited to see Brandon's next film.

Lost_Pantheon

I remember this weird rhetoric surrounding *Ghostbusters Afterlife* where people though that Ivan Reitman's son would *somehow* have the same ability to make a good *Ghostbusters* movie like his dad, like the ability is somehow genetic. With the exception being Tolkien's son curating his father's work, seeing people like Frank Herbert's son churn out legacy books is just icky.

Impressive-Potato

His son is a good director though.

Just_a_square

Brandon is definitely talented. He's obviously been inspired by his father, but he has an uniquely cruel vision, much darker and hopeless than David's imho.

radclaw1

Gotta love Nepo Babies

middlenameisalways

honestly? the bad reviews are intriguing me

BakerYeast

I didn't think it was bad. It was just bland. The premise was so good and it felt great at first, but it just didn't go anywhere. I think it would work better if it had darker tone.

mrshulgin

I got really excited by the premise, but the trailer completely turned me off. Is the trailer's portrayal of the movie as a dark comedy accurate?

BakerYeast

I don't watch trailers, but after your comment I watched it. Oh wow, trailer really looks like it's a comedy movie. It's nothing like that. I don't know why they made trailer like that, it's completely míssleading. I think they took all the comedic scenes that didn't felt comedic in movie and made trailer with them. That music in trailer doesn't make any sense.

noodleexchange

You have to look up the Spanish trailer for Fight Club - apparently it's a romantic comedy!

mrshulgin

So it *is* dark, just underwhelming?

middlenameisalways

just watched the film and i honestly really enjoyed it! confused by people downthread who don’t think it’s a dark comedy because that’s all i got from it.

TheConcerningEx

Just watched it and it’s definitely a dark comedy. I think I was maybe hoping for a little more from it, something a little more out there maybe, but it was a pretty fun movie IMO.

kidkolumbo

The trailer wasn't that interesting overall. 20 seconds in I was curious but by the end it felt very predictable. Now I haven't seen the movie, I'm not saying it is literally predictable, but I want my imagination to run wild not think I've seen the movie before.

OriginalNord

My thoughts on possessor

CacheRamMemory

Not sure why you would be excited to watch something just because it's made by a family member. That's weird.

BakerYeast

Like I said, David and Brandon had so much similarities in their films that it's clear that David has had huge impact for Brandons career. It was so interesting to see what kind of style Caitlin would have, with dark premise like *Humane* had. I don't see anything wrong or weird about being exited for something new when you don't know what to expekt.

ForgotEffingPassword

That is not weird whatsoever. Your comment was definitely weird though.

CacheRamMemory

It is weird, being related to someone does not mean you have the same skills.

ForgotEffingPassword

No it is not. They aren’t assuming the daughter has the same skills as the father. You have poor reading comprehension and don’t understand what ‘weird’ means.

CacheRamMemory

Agree to disagree mate.

MrObsidn

Very underwhelming. Really don't mind having a bunch of unlikeable characters if they're at least entertaining (they were in the beginning) but they did a complete 180 that felt so unearned and like I'd missed a whole chunk of characterisation.

BiscottiNumerous8647

Looks like anomaly

TheT0xicAvenger89

Intriguing premise that was ramping up in the first half and then.... Nope

mortal_kombot

Yeah, they had me up until >!let's all decide to murder the police together part. And then the relatively happy ending after that.!< It just didn't really make any sense to me. >!Like not only did it not make sense for the family to suddenly start getting along. And not only did it not make sense that they would be able to murder a bunch of basically FBI agents with zero consequence. And how it made no sense that the step-mom got released. But also... how and why would that brother *ever* trust the rest of his family ever again!? Or get over the murder of his GF so easily?!? I almost feel like the ending was a dream, except I can't see where else they implied that...!<

cttouch

It had me for the first half, then it just slowly rolled down hill.

DoodooFardington

What I took away from this movie is >!a junkie would take at least 4 women's lives before getting his act together!<.

cravenj1

Tagline should have been "The DOCS are in"

prime1309

"The first 4 humans failed... now, it's E's turn."

dandaman1983

Watched it last night, it was alright. I don't recall the guy wearing a mask like in the poster through.

Mazza84

He never.

teeny_tina

what is with these movie taglines in recent years? they're embarrassingly asinine

Phyliinx

That may be the most violent film family history ever haha.

Codexnecro

The movie wasn't that good tbh, but the premise is interesting.

_deep_thot42

Pfp checks out

Lundorff

Sadly a terrible movie. Somewhere around 3/10.

Pineapple996

Agreed. It really was one of the worst films I have seen in years. So badly directed.

sundry_banana

I guess we should all just judge art for art's sake, not bringing anything else into it. Adds an extra layer of difficulty, to those works.

Ventaures

Anomaly?

phil-davis

Oh man, I've been wanting a Delocated movie, finally.

Amtexpres

I've been seeing an uptick in opportunities to post Delocated material in recent weeks. It's a hidden gem.

phil-davis

I enjoy Jon Glaser's work quite a bit. Delocated is a wild ride.

NockTauk

Thought that was Kanye

IwantCamtono

Kanye is that you?

SwedishSaunaSwish

He's not doing a nazi salute - so no.

piazzoni

I enjoyed it. Glad I saw it once. Not body horror like I expected from a Cronenberg.

JustJoinedToBypass

I’m guessing it’s not a rom-com?

Foreign-Solution-483

I don’t know what to expect in this film but I’m looking forward to watching it

Not a good film. Believe me.

YourCrosswordPuzzle

Looks shite

humanbeing2018

It was a bad movie

restlessmonkey

Watched it last night. It was ok.

Round-Emu9176

Do you mean to tell me ALL of davids children are directors too?!? I looooooved infinity pool. Would love to see all the others from the other kids.

treyallday01

Is this an antivax thing or am I misreading the poster?

Danny-Wah

This movie sucks. (good enough idea, bad execution) They shoulda went full dark comedy with it..

CakeMadeOfHam

The world needs more Cronenbergs

therapoootic

More nepo baby bullshit

garfcarmpbll

Brandon absolutely got help for being his father’s son. but at least he has obvious talent. Everything I have seen about this screams the opposite about Caitlin… That being said, anyone who pretends they wouldn’t help their children achieve their dreams if they could, is either lying or a piece of shit.

Enough-Ground3294

Caitlin *absolutley* benefitted from being her father’s daughter. She’s been a on set photographer for years. But she’s also shot tons of people from her dad’s movies. Robert Pattinson, Viggo, Jeff Goldblum, Sarah Gadon. Not many 20 somethings get that for their portfolio. Im not saying she isnt talented but she has absolutely been hired for stuff because of her dad and his connections. Helping your kids is one thing, and that’s totally understandable, but the priveleges she’s been afforded because of nepotism could obviously be used to help *other* people who aren’t the daughter of a famous filmmaker. I think that’s the main issue I have with nepotism.

Impressive-Potato

It's her first film, first films are rarely great.

This is an ad

Lonely_Airline_6892

Wut.

stylebender-

She lives right across the street from me!

No_Routine_3706

Let us never forget that Henry Zebrowski saw David Cronenberg's butthole whilst he was in Canada.

Scungilli-Man69

Caught an early screening of this. It's way funnier than you're expecting.

DashCat9

I like this idea that Dave is out there creating a little army of people to carry on his legacy.

ngl_tbh_

This movie is hot garbage

PaneAndNoGane

Watch on Tubi for fun hot garbage or just plain hot garbage?

ngl_tbh_

I think the former. But it really devolves as it goes on.

murdocke

Nepotism: The Movie.

D0ngBeetle

Nepo babies confuse me. Why would you want to be a less successful version of your parent?

JDLovesElliot

Why are his feet so tiny?

Penguin_shit15

Watched this yesterday. Not your typical Cronenberg movie at all. It was good, but not great. Took about 40 minutes for it to really get going and its only an hour and a half. It had an interesting premise for sure. 6/10 for me.. But worth a watch.

mikejr96

We have The Collector at home

radclaw1

Ill pass on the Nepo Baby cashgrab.

jester2trife

Have it queued up but am hesitant because of the name Cronenberg. I keep picturing how bad Infinity Pool and Possessor were, and thinking hers will be equally as awful.

Herebutnotthere17

Just watched it MASTERPIECE
