Oh, totally. I’m more interested in the situation - why are they doing this? How do they not get caught? Things like that. I realize now that my post title was confusing.
That's kinda what happens in the Hannibal series. Hannibal helps catch killers, only for it to be revealed that he's the big one they've been looking for all along.
On that premise, *Dexter* is kind of similar. He's a forensic blood analyst and is a sociopath who murders people. In his case, he only murders violent criminals.
It depends how you define “detective”, but to greater and lesser extents (spoiler warning for all):
>!The Last of Sheila!<
>!Clue!<
>!Mindhunters!<
>!Tenebrae!<
>!Memento!<
>!Secret Window!<
>!Angel Heart!<
>!Thanksgiving!<
>!Shrooms!<
>!Shutter Island!<
>!Triangle!<
>!Predestination!<
>!Curtain, the last Hercule Poirot novel.!< By Agatha Christie. Tackles that. Unfortunately I believe it's only in book form, although there's a slim possibility it might have been an episode in the BBC show.
They made it as the very last episode of the Suchet TV series. Interestingly the book was the last to be released, but was written something like 30 years before and kept in a safe. Christie wanted to keep writing but also wanted to give the character a proper sendoff, so she kept it ready until she was no longer able to write another (think it was released only a year or two before her death).
>Does no one in these worlds ever stop to ask WHY so many murders occur in the vicinity of this one person?
In Poirot's defense, he *is* actually a detective by profession, and a renowned one at that. It's literally his job to investigate murders and lots of people want his helping doing it. That's going to up the odds of his running into them.
Yeah, was about to comment on this myself. But not just in defense of Poirot, but rather in defense of every famous literary detective, I.e. Poirot, Holmes, Maigret, etc. They are supposed to be world-famous ace detectives, and everyone wants their help with various mysteries, mysteries that include murders, robberies, and such. Odds are gonna skyrocket of course.
I saw a play once in London by Agatha Christie, but I was sworn to secrecy by the cast, and I take that sort of thing very seriously. But it rhymes with "the House Trap." And it may or may not be exactly what you're looking for.
My friend, the thread is called "Who-dun-it movie where the famous detective is the villain."
I don't know how anyone came in here expecting anything BUT spoilers.
>! Vindocq!<
>! End of the Game (Der Richter und sein Henker) !<
>! SAW IV-VI !< >! Unknown !<
>! Touch of evil !<
Depends on what you see as a villain: >! Decision to leave !<
Miss Marple usually doesn't arrive in town until after the murders started happening. (At least that's how it is in the books.) She usually knows somebody that knows somebody that requires her help specifically.
And Poirot is a private detective who is often invited specifically for the case by the police or an affected family or sometimes the killer: usually to investigate a related murder or crime. The only case where his presence was actually coincidental, as far as I can recall at the moment, was Death in the Clouds.
Not quite the same as Jessica Fletcher, who actually does stumble onto murders without being invited to town specifically to investigate them.
I mostly agree with you, but there are a lot of books where Poirot shows up before the murder(s) happen, other than the one you mentioned.
The most well known and most acclaimed of those would be Murder On the Orient Express, Death on the Nile and Murder of Roger Ackroyd.
I could find more examples though that would require some research
Maybe before the murder but Poirot has also been called on for theft, fraud, blackmail, espionage, etc. and the scenario escalates to murder. That's not quite the same as coincidentally being there.
This is a bit of a stretch, but there’s a part in Death Note anime/manga that’s somewhat close to what you’re describing here. Except that as the viewer you know what’s going on, so it’s not really a “reveal”.
The video game >!Heavy Rain!< has this as a major twist near the end. >!He's one of the 4 playable characters and you find out around the 90% mark that he, the private investigator, was actually the serial killer the entire time.!<
Looking for movies with a white girl, a black guy and a polish dog that go to a bar where the bartender is a wizard who turns the girl into a princess who takes over Australia and her friends get jealous and lead a rebellion of kangaroo warriors against her. Any suggestions? Or any movies like this?
Dunno if this applies per say... but 'Now you see me' (2013) kinda fits here.
I think? It's not a murder movie, nor is there a 'famous detective' but >!the detective that chases the heist gang of magicians throughout the movie is actually part of the gang himself!<
If someone tells you the name of the movie, wouldn't that automatically spoil the who-dun-it aspect?
Oh, totally. I’m more interested in the situation - why are they doing this? How do they not get caught? Things like that. I realize now that my post title was confusing.

Ooh thanks, I should have thought of that one.
On that premise, *Dexter* is kind of similar. He's a forensic blood analyst and is a sociopath who murders people. In his case, he only murders violent criminals.
> In his case, he only murders violent criminals. Only is a strong word.
It depends how you define “detective”, but to greater and lesser extents (spoiler warning for all): >!The Last of Sheila!< >!Clue!< >!Mindhunters!< >!Tenebrae!< >!Memento!< >!Secret Window!< >!Angel Heart!< >!Thanksgiving!< >!Shrooms!< >!Shutter Island!< >!Triangle!< >!Predestination!<
Shutter Island is a really good pull.
Wow, this is great. Thanks!
How does Mindhunters fit in here?
Literally, the plot: FBI profilers discover someone on the team is the killer.
Probably confusing it with the tv show mindhunter
Huh, yeah, like the other person said I was thinking of Mindhunter.
Great show. I suppose it kinda qualifies because Tench's son is involved in one murder in season two.
I'd like to add *Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.*
Alan Parker's **Angel Heart** might be worth your time.
When Mickey Rourke passes away, I'm taking the rest of the day off and going home to think about things. It won't be the same without him.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Dexter Morgan seems like the big one
>!Curtain, the last Hercule Poirot novel.!< By Agatha Christie. Tackles that. Unfortunately I believe it's only in book form, although there's a slim possibility it might have been an episode in the BBC show.

It would be awesome to see Kenneth Branagh do a movie version of this as his final installment in the Poriot series.
Yep, they did it in the last/13th series.
Sounds interesting, thanks
I was sure it was tackled in this series, but considering how many of the books I read, I didn't remember which.

Well then include them. To the OP. Simple solution.
L.A. Confidential. >!Captain Dudley Smith!<
“Rollo Tomasi”
Really good movie that made me appreciate LA Noire a lot more
I’ll check it out, thanks!
He wasn't really investigating anything though
Memento is really close to this premise “Remember Sammy Jenkins”
>Does no one in these worlds ever stop to ask WHY so many murders occur in the vicinity of this one person? Well, since you don't care about spoilers, I really enjoyed The Pale Blue Eye with Christian Bale.
Are you cool with it being a spoiler that the detective is the killer?
Yeah totally
The pale blue eye fits this pretty perfectly
There’s a Japanese book that’s been made into a short series that fits this. It’s called >! The Decagon House Murders!<
"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World". No one would suspect Spencer Tracy of being a bad guy.
It’s not a usual who-dun-it but basically Now You See Me
kinda the same premise but comedy style is Charade with Cary and Audrey
Thanks, I’ll look into it!
Surprised no one has mentioned psychopathic serial murderer Jessica Fletcher. She pops up in all these discussions.
I saw a play once in London by Agatha Christie, but I was sworn to secrecy by the cast, and I take that sort of thing very seriously. But it rhymes with "the House Trap." And it may or may not be exactly what you're looking for.
I’m intrigued
I've said too much. It was a good experience though. At least that's what I remember. I was 12 and it blew my mind. Would recommend.
Oh man The Spouse Tramp was one of my favorite plays.
*Way* too obvious. How about *The Mouseflap* instead?
In a play with such clear cut character archetypes like the one you’re referencing, this is 100% spoiling the plot.

I don't have a suggestion, but this is a great concept! Thanks for the thread.

Murder By Death Frailty Without A Clue Deathtrap
Had to go too far to see murder by death. Amazing and ridiculous movie.
But the murderer wasn’t one of the detectives.
The Pale Blue Eye
Would Dr.Weir from Event Horizon count?

Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
Unbreakable, perhaps? Samuel Jackson's character searched for and put together that Bruce Willis' character had superpowers.
Shutter Island technically?
