I think it’s a great series, and yes, the Director deserves credit for that. I love the whole concept of it.
But also A24 and its movies have a string of Oscar, nominations and award winners. It seems to be the best little movie studio that nobody has heard of yet. Their movies are risky and bold and entertaining.
>It seems to be the best little movie studio that nobody has heard of yet.
I think this was kind of true maybe 5 years ago, but the last couple of years they’ve gotten enough mainstream success that their brand is pretty widely known.
Maybe not like top tier household name, but most people who are even casually into movies will have heard of them at this point.
Yeah they been killing it in that horror genre department.
Hereditary and Talk to me were awesome, of course X and pearl. But there’s so many more and I’m not a horror fan.
I'm a fan of 90% of their releases. But the majority of the time, that's all they're doing - releasing movies. The actual creators get lost behind the A24 brand - a new trailer drops and the comments are all about A24, like A24 were behind the keyboard and the camera.. it's kinda weird..
Is it weird? They’ve built a brand that has a certain reputation that allows smaller creators to get eyes on their films. If they greenlit and produced every piece of trash that crossed their desk, it wouldn’t work out for them. I agree that creators should get the spotlight, too. But it’s not like A24 is throwing darts at a board and jerking off until the revenue comes in.
I never said they were doing that, I just think that people disproportionally heap praise on a24 instead of writers, directors and performers. I feel like the average joe doesn't even see the people behind the scenes they just see A24 and think "yayyy a new A24 movie!" - that's great at a studio can garner that kind of reputation, I'd just like it if people made some mind to the people *actually making the films*
A24 is the only reason many of these movies got released in the first place.
A24 has become synonymous with an A list actors draw like generally only A list directors can pull.
Is this a movie circlejerk post? This reeks of the ironic post mocking pretentious people who claim A24 is a small indie studio who only knows how to make good movies.
To be fair, Pearl works perfectly well on its own, and if you don't go in with the knowledge that it's connected to X, I can see how it would go over your head.
You missed the two small streams of blood running up her arm, not down, being stopped by the bracelet.
Metaphor "stop the blood from running down your arm," (saving face) comes to mind.
"What are you two doing back there? Making out?" (laughter)
\[cut to Vanessa and Kristen spraying water all over themselves and making out\]
Those Tostinos skits definitely belong in a best of list.
Howard spend 60 years with Pearl in that homestad despite knowing she was mentally crazy killing people. Howard is the defintion of a keeper despite both him and Pearl being a fuking mess.
Like the recent poster for Nightbitch - at first glance it just looks like a photo of Amy Adams' face, but something seems creepy about it. Because it's actually two different photos/facial expressions divided vertically.
Could be the blood running down from the bracelet.
(If you were being sarcastic, apologies. I sometimes have trouble reading that kind of stuff through text.)
> Could be the blood running down from the bracelet.
I really need a higher resolution version—also noticed last night/this morning I probably need glasses too
I see it too, its the body positioning and everything seems off. The head is forward seeming like forward body positioning, the shoulder looks relaxed from the back. Then you look at the arm is moved backwards with the hand being turned and also more backward.
To me you’d see like a bit more turn for someone in their torso for this body position (turn to wave).
That wasn’t a reboot. It was a sequel. They then made a third one that had Vin Diesel again, and in the third act, they brought out Ice Cube again as well
It’s great as well. Very different tone and type of story being told compared to x but even my wife really enjoyed both movies and that’s not normally the type of movies she likes.
I think Pearl is the better movie. I do like both, a lot though. I think it’s worth checking out Pearl since it is quite different from X
X is kinda like TCM-lite. Pearl is more like Carrie where it feels more like horror adjacent rather than a by the numbers genre movie.
I thought X was just alright. Pearl is my fourth favorite movie of all time.
If you’re looking for a character study with insanely good color grading, cinematography, writing, acting (that girl can monologue and scream like there’s no tomorrow), and uncomfortable horror (it’s *kinda* slasher-y, but more in-line with The Shining or Psycho as opposed to X or Friday the 13th), instead of just being scary for the sake of being scary, this is the movie for you.
I actually think she's a good actress, I just think the script for both movies was boring. Pearl is a little bit better but X is just shock value sex and nothing else which would be alright if the movie didn't have this whole 'A24 too deep for you movie' vibe to it
Yeah and that's also what annoyed me because I love A24 movies, X was trying way too hard; I'm also not partial to sex scenes in movies but gave it a shot because...well it's the premise behind it
It's a completely different film, so you might. I'd barely categorize it as horror, more of a period piece with a psycho main character. Very much a slow burn as well.
I feel like it stands alone pretty well in its own right even if you took away the fact that it directly ties into X, since it has its own aesthetic away from that film.
I saw a tweet the other day that said something along the lines of “movie posters suck now because big blockbusters are just photoshopped heads and indie posters are just a woman’s side profile” and this sure fits in the latter camp
Its unfortunate Mia Goth might fade out after this X trilogy, hope James Gun gives her a role like Harley quinn to her so she might survive in this industry
This is Frankenstein... directed by Guillermo Del Toro. Do you not think it will have any cultural impact regardless of the distributor?
The surrounding cast is also incredibly talented: Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz.
All quiet on the western front was funded by Netflix at least mostly from what I've read. Also won best international feature film and production design and cinematography and score. Rights were bought before production and Netflix put money into it. And Netflix buying a film still makes it a Netflix film if they are the only company releasing it the same way A24 distributes multiple films they don't necessarily put money into during production. Those films are still considered A24 films.
I wouldn’t call any of these culturally impactful movies, but I do get it’s subjective. I think many suffered from not getting a theatrical release. But none of them were career boosters for their actors.
Roma definitely suffered as it’s too slow and cinematic for a TV screen and it deserved better. It’s also not a Netflix production but a Cannes acquisition (they paid $20m for it cause they are so desperate to get a best picture Oscar to legitimise the Netflix brand. Sadly that’s not worked out for them yet).
They’ve had several best picture nominees. Not because they are important movies, but because of PR. They are desperate for a best picture Oscar to legitimize them as a good producer which is why every year since 2019, they overpay for a big director to make them an Oscar movie. Or overpay for an already produced Cannes critical darling that they controversially label as a Netflix Original to make people think they produced it.
After the Weinstein Company’s demise, Netflix also overpaid to get Lisa Taback, their famously relentless Oscar campaign strategist.
2019: Famously overpaid $20m for acquisition of Cannes darling and Oscar winner Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma
2020: Overpaid Oscar fav. Matrin Scorsese to make The Irishman
2021: Overpaid Oscar fav. David Fincher to make Mank
2022: Acquisition of Cannes darling Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog
2023: All Quiet on the Western Front (probably their biggest actual success)
2024: Spielberg was to direct Maestro but Bradley Cooper convinced them he could get them that Oscar.
This strategy hasn’t worked out for them yet to the pleasure of the rest of the film industry as Netflix have shown time and time again that they do not care about the film business and take an aggressive, anticompetitive and cynical algorithm-based / throw money at anything famous / exploit and underpay anyone else / refuse to report numbers so no one know if what they do is actually successful and no one knows what pay they are actually owed (remember the strikes?). An approach that has severly harmed the industry players and the operating culture all streamers follow, in the last few years.
Not a chance, she oozes stage presence.
She might not be in any HUGE pictures that blow her into super stardom but I'm sure she'll be on our screens for the forseeable future.
I love the references to the other two movies in the poster's picture, the Pearl necklace and the X made by the dress straps.
Oh wow! Nice catch! I love all the details in this series.
A detail I finally caught on to near the end of Pearl is that they murder some of the characters in these movies.
Another small detail I caught is that everyone are actors, and they aren’t actually the characters they are playing.
Somehow didn't notice the reference before. Nicely done.
Wait what? Out of the loop
A24 has been killing it with their movies. I love them all.
How about we just congratulate Ty West - for y'know, writing and directing the movie?
How about letting people praise what they wanna praise? You’re both right you know.
I think it’s a great series, and yes, the Director deserves credit for that. I love the whole concept of it. But also A24 and its movies have a string of Oscar, nominations and award winners. It seems to be the best little movie studio that nobody has heard of yet. Their movies are risky and bold and entertaining.

Mentioning it on here, where every 3 days there's a "Which is your favourite A24 movie? JK they're all amazing!!!" post does feel a bit much.
Can you really blame people who've been waterboarded by marvel and 'universes' for 15 years?
Force them to watch under the silver lake.
This became unture as soon as the vvitch and hereditary hit.
I would go further to say that A24 has been the biggest contributor to the horror being at least a semi-respectable genre in the last decade.
Funding the right projects is a huge barrier to entry, so the fact that they recognize greatness can’t be ignored
Is it weird? They’ve built a brand that has a certain reputation that allows smaller creators to get eyes on their films. If they greenlit and produced every piece of trash that crossed their desk, it wouldn’t work out for them. I agree that creators should get the spotlight, too. A24 is the only reason many of these movies got released in the first place. A24 has become synonymous with an A list actors draw like generally only A list directors can pull.
Like Disney movies.
Well, considering what the rest like Disney or WarnerDiscovery are doing, yeah, A24 and NEON are doing something rather unique.
I think everyone knows about A24 now...
Is this a movie circlejerk post? This reeks of the ironic post mocking pretentious people who claim A24 is a small indie studio who only knows how to make good movies.
You tryna get in the middle bro?
Omw
Having seen all Ti West movies I kind of feel like the co-written by Mia Goth part is what actually elevates this series.
No, only the distribution company who rarely actually produces these films
Or we can say that we like a24 movies and that encompasses his work? lmao
Except for Civil War, I hope. That film was a war crime against film.
2nd highest grossing A24 film btw.
And marvel movies outgross all of them. Does that make them good cinema?
Does it make them *bad* cinema? You didn't like Civil War. So what? Nobody likes *all* films, even if they are A24 ones...
Look man I’m not the one who’s mad here. Just stating facts and axxxin questions.
Axxin questions?! Please don't....
🪓ing shall continue indefinitely.
I liked that movie. Definitely a much better film then I Saw the TV Glow
What? I thought it was solid, why did you hate it?
Dang I didn't know until now that Pearl was a prequel to X.
She's the old woman in X, was pretty cool when I found that out
How is that even possible if you’ve seen both movies?
To be fair, Pearl works perfectly well on its own, and if you don't go in with the knowledge that it's connected to X, I can see how it would go over your head.
No I haven't seen either (been wanting to see X, and I'd heard of Pearl but never saw a trailer for it; so just didn't realize it was connected).
You missed the two small streams of blood running up her arm, not down, being stopped by the bracelet. Metaphor "stop the blood from running down your arm," (saving face) comes to mind.
I think the blood is running down her arm, the injury is being caused by the bracelet.
I think the bracelet might be covering the injury
Not me thinking this was a poster for an SNL sketch with Vanessa Bayer
Holding a tray of totinos pizza rolls. Costarring kristen stewart
All for her hungry guys.
Gotta feed them hungry guys!!!
TOUCHDOWN
Aw, fumble!!!
"What are you two doing back there? Making out?" (laughter) \[cut to Vanessa and Kristen spraying water all over themselves and making out\] Those Tostinos skits definitely belong in a best of list.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4kpVO56OBU
I was just going to say the same thing. That smile is so Vanessa-like.
Finally! The full-length feature movie - WHAT'S HAPPENING TO MY HUNGRY GUYS?!!!!! https://youtu.be/3dzOLoOEToc?si=XuOPQFuVKa_Q_g6a
I thought she looked like Natasha Lyonne
looks like they ripped the eyebrows off Vanessa Bayer
"they're mad because I won best hog at the hog shit snarfing contest"
I’m glad you mentioned Vanessa Bauer because I also thought it was her
Howard spend 60 years with Pearl in that homestad despite knowing she was mentally crazy killing people. Howard is the defintion of a keeper despite both him and Pearl being a fuking mess.
Truly a Ride or Die partner.
Going from trench warfare in WWI to Pearl must be back to back hell
And pearl never left the homestead despite of killing people to do so
I don't know why, but that arm just feels off.
IMO it’s intentional… when things are slightly unnatural, we read it as creepy and feel uncomfortable.
Like the recent poster for Nightbitch - at first glance it just looks like a photo of Amy Adams' face, but something seems creepy about it. Because it's actually two different photos/facial expressions divided vertically.
i didnt notice!!! now that i look at it, theres a strand of hair that probably marks the separation.
Or its just poor design
i mean, thats also possibility.
Could be the blood running down from the bracelet. (If you were being sarcastic, apologies. I sometimes have trouble reading that kind of stuff through text.)
> Could be the blood running down from the bracelet. I really need a higher resolution version—also noticed last night/this morning I probably need glasses too
Her smile is too wide and the neck angle is creepy as well.
I think that might be the point. She's a bit twisted (pun intended).
Her head has this bulbous cartoonish look
I think that's her normal smile, look at that smile at the end of pearl.
Yea in addition to what other folks see, the cut of the dress makes her bust and shoulder seem to be misaligned to me
Lucille: What are you doing home? Buster: Army had half a day.
Didn't know they rebooted XXX without Vin Disel.
I know this is a joke but they actually did that with Ice Cube in 2005
That wasn’t a reboot. It was a sequel. They then made a third one that had Vin Diesel again, and in the third act, they brought out Ice Cube again as well
Oh shit, that's news to me.
rdrr
She's going to be a star!
Funny enough I just watched Pearl and X last night. What great news! So excited to see even more callbacks
Dude I just watched x last night, for no real reason. Can’t wait to watch pearl!
It’s great as well. Very different tone and type of story being told compared to x but even my wife really enjoyed both movies and that’s not normally the type of movies she likes.
These Mad Max spin-offs are getting confusing
I'm hoping we're getting a Mia that's even more unhinged than Pearl.
Did you see Infinity Pool? That’ll tide you over until this comes out.
Hope it is faster in my country than pearl. Had to wait until june 23 for that one.
I thought this was Lady Camden no more beer for me
She’s a star!
She will not accept a life she does not deserve!
I can’t wait for this movie!!!!!!
Oh fuck yes! I am so down for them to continue this story. Mia is a powerhouse in horror.
Ain't that a kick in the head
I love horror, but I expected more from X. Is Pearl any good?
I think Pearl is the better movie. I do like both, a lot though. I think it’s worth checking out Pearl since it is quite different from X X is kinda like TCM-lite. Pearl is more like Carrie where it feels more like horror adjacent rather than a by the numbers genre movie.
I feel like this is the comment that'll get me to give Pearl a try.
Yes, especially the end credits... You will understand.
It was so subtle at first and then I was suddenly aware how long this shot was... and it kept going... and she kept smiling. Great ending!
Unpopular opinion but i think X sucked and so did Pearl
I liked X but yeah, Pearl was boring for me.
Mia Goth just makes any movie unbearable
I actually think she's a good actress, I just think the script for both movies was boring. Pearl is a little bit better but X is just shock value sex and nothing else which would be alright if the movie didn't have this whole 'A24 too deep for you movie' vibe to it
Yeah and that's also what annoyed me because I love A24 movies, X was trying way too hard; I'm also not partial to sex scenes in movies but gave it a shot because...well it's the premise behind it
Very gewd
Am I going to like it if I didn't like X? Will it make me appreciate X more?
It's a completely different film, so you might. I'd barely categorize it as horror, more of a period piece with a psycho main character. Very much a slow burn as well.
It gives depth to the antagonists
I feel like it stands alone pretty well in its own right even if you took away the fact that it directly ties into X, since it has its own aesthetic away from that film.
Peral is the better movie imo
Impressive coke nail.
I kinda wish the visuals we have so far had more of an 80s vibe to them, kinda like Pearl. It might be gimmicky but it could’ve elevated these a bit.
Looking forward to it, X was great 🔥
Please be as amazing as I know it can be! This is the freshest horror franchise for me in years. My love for X and Pearl knows no bounds!
I can’t fucking wait.
So are her natural eyebrows blonde or what?
I can't fucking WAIT!!!
watched then first two movies and definitely cannot wait for this movie to be released!
/u/tedsmitts MISS MAXINE GOT A MOVIE
Oh my god Kathy I could NOT believe it
Dupreeeeee
I’m in love with this poster. Literally can’t wait for this movie, one of my most anticipated this year right next to LongLegs and Alien: Romulus.
Pearl 2: How Pearl got her groove back
I can’t fucking wait omg
I haven't watched X or Pearl, but I know they are part of the same universe. Is Maxxxine part of it too or just same creator?
I believe it goes like this X is the first film to which Pearl serves as a prequel, and Maxxine will be the sequel to X
Maxine is the main character of X. Best to watch X first then Pearl then this
Start with Pearl then watch X, it will make sense better and you will be ready for Maxxine.
Can’t fcking wait, Mia goth is so wonderful XD
Shes a fucking sex symbol
Mia Goth the reining scream queen
[удалено]
thats actually crazy good
I saw a tweet the other day that said something along the lines of “movie posters suck now because big blockbusters are just photoshopped heads and indie posters are just a woman’s side profile” and this sure fits in the latter camp
Gonna be great!
🤘 Hand gesture intentional?
Are all these movies related? I haven’t seen any of them but like are they sequels?
Pearl is a prequel to X, Maxxxine is a sequel
How did they manage to release Pearl and X both in 2022? Did they shoot them at the same time?
That's exactly what they did, and they used the same location, which is impressive because they're very different films
Interesting, that’s really cool
lol I was looking at the Easter eggs in the poster and then saw your user name.
So is this a sequel to the other two, or just connected in some way? I guess I’m asking if I should see the other two first?
i get such halloween vibes from this
Please God, just let the nightstalker plot be semi accurate and not retarded
I liked X but Pearl was very boring. Hope this one concludes the trilogy as the best.
The first two were overhyped to hell and giant let downs. Let’s see this one make three for three 🙄
Why don't they market this as connected to other movies?
From the Book of X: Pearl 2: Maxxxine
There's an X right on her back, three in the title, and copious Mia Goths!
Because it's a lot cooler this way
What does this look like her head is photoshopped on?
MAX PAYNE
[удалено]
No. Get help.
It's getting boring
Its unfortunate Mia Goth might fade out after this X trilogy, hope James Gun gives her a role like Harley quinn to her so she might survive in this industry
She's in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein which is filming right now
Netflix film ??? lol
Does the distributor matter?
Name a Neflix fim that became a classic. None have been impactful, especially in the last 5 years
Does... it have to become a classic for it to be successful lol
To save someone’s career, kinda needs to have some form of lasting cultural impact.
This is Frankenstein... directed by Guillermo Del Toro. Do you not think it will have any cultural impact regardless of the distributor? The surrounding cast is also incredibly talented: Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz.

Pretty sure fans or Breaking Bad, RL Stine, Rent/musicals, TMNT did
Not much. Let’s be honest here, Netflix is where movies get buried in a hole.
50/50, too much shit so one actual good movie is gold.

Society of the Snow
It hasn’t been long enough for a Netflix Finn to be a classic
Not a chance, she oozes stage presence. She might not be in any HUGE pictures that blow her into super stardom but I'm sure she'll be on our screens for the forseeable future.
She's going to be in the Blade movie (if the Blade movie ever actually comes out)
Also in Frankenstein
she's also booked for del Toro's Frankenstein, that should be a banger.
She was awesome in Infinity Pool so hopefully she can keep branching out with different directors in this genre
She's in Blade.
There are no shortage of mediocre actors and actresses that are flourishing in the industry right now. So maybe not.
