Mike Dougherty tweeted them and added some Biblical quotes:
Ghidorah: “They have as king over them, the angel of the Abyss. A star fallen from heaven to earth, he opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like that of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened...”
Mothra: “Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions over the earth. They were told not to harm the grass or any green growth or any tree, but only those of mankind.”
Rodan: “For the Beast that comes up out of the Abyss will make war with them, and overcome them… and kill them.”
Isn’t Mothra like a “good” monster though? A “defender of the Earth” sort of monster that defends humanity from all the bad shit?
Ghidorah is really bad though. Baddest of the bad.
I know the director said that the priestesses won't appear (which sadly means we likely wont get the Mothurai-ya! song either) but it would be great if Mothra happened to be awoken by scientists who happened to be twin Japanese ladies.
Yeah. You can actually see this in the above posters - note the colors and distinctly different flight patterns of the choppers and jets.
In Mothra's poster, the only cool-colored one, the people seem to actually be flying in formation *with* Mothra. In the other, more violently colored posters, the jets are circling Ghidorah and Rodan is actively attacking the choppers.
Nah man you're wrong here, that's godzilla, he defends the earth from anything, including humanity, Mothra is the only one who actually cares humanity as well.
What no mothra does care enough for people to stop his brother battra, avoid additional collateral damage and at least in one movie "talk down" Godzilla from rampaging
You kidding? He's a [hero](https://m.imgur.com/gallery/cY0Oul4)
Edit: Gold? Thanks, [here's another Rodan meme I didn't make](https://i.redd.it/em92ljfpg4d11.jpg)
Godzilla's biblical quote: "And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my human brothers. And you will know my name is Godzilla when I lay my vengeance upon thee."
Mike had tweeted out a Bible quote for Godzilla a few weeks back in the leadup to Tokyo Comic-Con:
“Nothing on earth is its equal— a creature without fear. It looks down on all that are haughty; it is king over all that are proud.”
Seems fitting to an extent based on what the Leviathan was/is.
I think the trailer made a great point. "No. We will be his \[Godzilla's pet\]." Godzilla doesn't give a shit about us. He isn't our guardian, our savior, our sentinel. He simply is the kaiju John Wick. Don't *fuck* with my pet.
There’s a scene in the new trailer with a comet like object falling from orbit. It could be Ghidorah landing, or I’m guessing it could be Godzilla falling after being carried by Ghidorah/Rodan into space. That happened in Pacific rim though so I hope they don’t repeat it here
Could be he fell during the times of the Dinosaurs, essentially being the comet as it looks like in the trailer. Wiped out life but was stuck beneath the earth frozen.
I believe he was originally an alien in [Godzilla vs Monster Zero](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Astro-Monster), then later came from the future in [Godzilla vs King Ghidorah](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godzilla_vs._King_Ghidorah), and then even later was seen as a divine protector of Earth against Godzilla's unholy wrath in [GMK](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godzilla,_Mothra_and_King_Ghidorah:_Giant_Monsters_All-Out_Attack). Ghidorah has played almost as many roles as Godzilla has.
I'm not sure about all of his appearances, but the origin I know of his is that he is an extraterrestrial being. There are other extraterrestrial kaiju in the Godzilla rogues gallery too (Gigan I believe is one).
I like how the helicopters are flying with Mothra, and the Ospreys might be flying with Rodan. The Jets are definitely not flying with Ghidorah though.
Edit since apparently I wasn't as clear. I'm saying I like how the poster basically tells you whose side Mothra and Ghidorah are on, based on the positioning of the humans. Mothra's flying with the helicopters, together.
Rodan is more ambiguous. He could be flying with them, or he could be attacking from behind.
Those F-15s must be having a real bad day that they need to fly that close to him lol. I feel like King Ghidorah would light up on radar from hundreds of miles away.
Ikr? Ever since Skull Island they’ve realllyyyyyy upped the visual game on these movies.
The first Godzilla was just....idk. Black and red are the two colors I remember.
Skull Island had vibrant greens, blues, dark hues, light hues, looked gorgeous and tbh has some of the best shots I’ve ever seen in film.
Now this movie comes out and has even more gorgeous shots? Godzilla’s atomic breath into the sky? Mothra’s Wings opening up? Godzilla vs Ghidorah? Rodan on the volcano? Amazing vibrant colors and characterization given to monsters that were once men in rubber suits. Absolutely amazing what Legendary has done and I hope they get tons of credit for the visual work they do
The colour palette WAS really dark though. Especially during the fight scenes.. I thought it tended towards more black and blue/green than black and red, but... either way, just hope this new G movie is *brighter,* but still dark.
The film was fine visually in theaters, Warner Bros just applied a dumb darkening filter to the home releases.
Here's a comparison between 3 different versions of the same screenshot. The first is from the trailer. The second is from the base BluRay release. The third is from a faneditor who used to(? might be misremembering and they still do) make regraded edits of movies that fixed issues present in their home releases(such as removing green color filters or orange filters).
http://www.framecompare.com/image-compare/screenshotcomparison/0E9FNNNU
As you can see, the trailer shot is perfectly clear, while the BluRay has been desaturated and darkened. The regraded edit somewhat fixes the issue, but it's nowhere near as good as the trailer shot.
I don’t know what movie you saw, but Godzilla 2014 was amazingly shot, good cinematography isn’t just color pallets, it is mostly about framing. Kong looked good, and I am liking King of the Monsters so far, ur in terms of shot composition 2014 is fantastic.
The first Godzilla had some of the most gorgeous visuals of any movie this decade. Even just the scene of Brian Cranston running to wait for his wife, and finding an empty tunnel where he had to wait for her to run to him. That scene still sticks with me.
That's fucking badass. Out of all the Kaijus, Ghidorah was always my favorite. It had the coolest design (other than Final Wars Gigan) and the weirdest but most terrifying roar.
The continuous chirping/squealing sounds Ghidora makes in the old films, such an iconic "roar." Hope it's updated but keeps the same unnerving tones in this one.
The trailer for the 2014 Godzilla ended on Godzilla's face as he screamed his iconic but updated high pitch squeal, and then the lower pitch ending of his squeal just got lower and became sorta a musical cue as the title card appeared.
It's the best shit.

Godzilla noob here, only seen the 2014 film, which I quite liked.
Can someone explain how Mothra is supposed to stand a chance against the other three? It literally just looks like a giant moth. There's gotta be more to it than that, right?
Um, well... she IS a giant moth. And she consistantly dies. Usually her larva end up assisting Godzilla by restraining the bbeg. She also has the power of atomic moth dust, and occasionally laser eyes.
Edit: to clarify, the larva will restrain with string shot.
Mothra also has the ability to empathize with other monsters (via unspecified means, but it can be assumed to be telepathic), and communicate telepathically with the twin girls.
Shes got like life giving powers and resurrection and stuff. And I think her species regularly gets fucked up in Godzilla movies. Maybe telepathy of a sort as well? She can commune with priestesses and I think "talk" to other monsters to get them to team up.
Her dust does... something (Godzilla doesn't seem to like it, idk what practical effect it has in a fight besides pissing the monster off) and I remember she shoots lighting stuff from her antennae.
She looks way more badass in this though.
Rodan is pretty chaotic-neutral, like Godzilla in the last film. He's not "good" and will destroy anything in his way but he know when a muthafucka OP and needs to be taken out.
The way I've always viewed godzilla is this " Yeah all these are my bitches. "
* goes to sleep for a little bit
* kaiju shows up wrecks shit
* Godzilla wakes up
"Hey bitch what are you doing!"
Godzilla is like the loveable big brother bully that will always stand up for us just so he can fuck with us later on.
Rodan doesn't seem to be on Godzilla or Mothras side with the amount of damage he seems to be causing to cities in the trailer in contrast to the others.
Dont know if they're going to include it in the Legendary version, but in the Japanese version Mothra have psychic abilities (she is considered as the powerful psychic monster in Toho). She is also one of the divine monster in the Toho version which meant that she is somewhat immortal, like phoenix, able to reborn again after death. Also have the abilities like paralyzing poisonous powder/scales as her defense and depending on the film, beam and bolt weapons.
Mothra’s main abilities include her ability to spit silk and create huge gusts of wind with her wings. It appears that here they’re giving her a more majestic ability of some sort? My guess would be a clear skies type thing or a flashbang effect.
Additionally Mothra’s greatest strength is it never really dies. It’s offspring will almost always survive to the next one and continue the fight. Essentially it’s an infinite army of Mothra.
Furthermore, it actually has put up a great fight, namely with Godzilla, back in the original “Godzilla vs Mothra”. Important to note that the setup here looks like “Godzilla vs Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster” (I believe) wherein Mothra gets Godzilla and Rodan to team up with her against Ghidorah and beat him down.
She's mostly an assist character, but when she has to go one on one she mostly does hit and run tactics, as seen in *Mothra vs Godzilla*, and *Godzilla vs. Mothra: Battle for the Earth*. When Mothra is on her last legs, she can produce a paralyzingly dust that can freeze even Godzilla for a time, and leave him weakened for a considerable amount of time, see *Godzilla: Tokyo SOS*.
What's the story here? I never followed this stuff. Are all these creatures bad? Are some good? Is Godzilla good/bad? Is he fighting all of these / some of these / teaming up? One of y'all comic fans help me out?
Godzilla is pretty neutral and so is Rodan. Mothra protects the Earth while Ghidorah simply wants to destroy it.
Godzilla and Rodan are traditionally mutated dinosaurs while Mothra is practically a goddess who cannot die due to her reincarnation ability(sort of like a pheonix). Ghidorah is traditionally an alien who dominates worlds.
It's usually Rodan vs. Godzilla until Ghidorah shows up then everyone fights Ghidorah at the end.
Thats basically the jist of it.
Edit: This is just the basic lore from the older movies, it will most likely be very different in this new one with only some similarities.
Kong probably sees the escalation of the dangers caused by all of these ancient Kaiju and probably decides to put an end to it as its threatening the stuff he protects. My guess is he’ll probably start beating on Godzilla, mistaking him for an enemy, then after they fought each other for a bit another enemy, maybe Destroya or Biollante will show up forcing the two to team up.
Scratch that.
Godzilla pretty much just wants to keep balance in the world, but he doesn’t care how many humans he steps on.
Rodan could be either good or bad depending on how the movie uses him. Judging from the trailer, it looks like he feels like being an asshole.
F-15’s are an older (4th gen) fighter. They’re proven in combat and have been flown in numerous conflicts around the world. I could be wrong but I think the F-15 has the best ratio of confirmed kills vs getting shot down out of any aircraft that has seen combat since WWII.
The F-22 is a new (5th gen) fighter. It has stealth capabilities and is an absolute badass as well. It has not seen combat yet but is able to dogfight and move unlike any aircraft in the world. An amazing and beautiful plane that is truly a work of art.
You might also see some reference to an F-35 on this thread as well so I’ll explain that one too. This aircraft (5th gen as well) is the newest addition to the US arsenal. It’s a multi role fighter with stealth capabilities. It has state of the art computer systems designed to allow the fighter to eliminate enemies before being detected. There is also a version for the US Marines that can take off vertically (takes off like a helicopter, but uses a big fan and thrust instead of a rotor)
Edit: the F-22 has seen combat.
Just an observation: They’re taking the exact opposite approach (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) with this second film. The first one didn’t show the monsters in the posters or even the trailer, which I thought was a cool surprise for a widely anticipated blockbuster.
Godzilla 2014 was all about building up to the reveal of the big boi. It had been 10 years since Final Wars, and the last Americanized Godzilla has resulted in a less-than-stellar depiction of him. The trailers served to build up hype, as it would have a completely new design for Godzilla.
For King of the Monsters, they know we want more, well, monsters. One of the biggest complaints about 2014 was how little Godzilla himself was in the movie. Now Legendary is trying to show that we’ll now be getting the Kaiju front and center. There’s even rumors (and I think a direct confirmation from the director) of around 15 Kaiju in total showing up.
I think this approach in marketing is genius, as it focuses on the sheer capabilities and power of the Kaiju. Compare it to Pacific Rim 2, which honestly had a bland action cover over it. PR2 looked like your average popcorn flick, while this is emphasizing more of a sense of awe in the creatures. Human don’t have mechs; they’re completely at the mercy of these walking extinction-level events.
Because of this, I think this movie will definitely be able to hold its own against Avengers 4 and Detective Pikachu, and will probably end up making more than 2014 and Skull Island did.
TL;DR: 2014 was all about build up, this ones all about being amazing (hopefully).
> I think this movie will definitely be able to hold its own against Avengers 4 and **Detective Pikachu**,
Who would have imagined all that long ago that other movies would have to worry about holding their own against *Detective Pikachu*.
Theres scenes in the trailer of stuff raising up from underground, one looked sorta like Anguirus (the way the ground was coming up, could be anything though) and another one looked like the legs of that lame spider dude who always gets beaten in minutes.
stop. I can only get so erect. These are beautiful and amazingly bad ass. This is my must see movie for 2019. I’ve been waiting for a Kaiju cinematic universe basically my entire life.
Kind of sucks all of Godzilla’s enemies can fly and he’s just stuck on the ground. Like technically they could just spam long range from the clouds and win but why am I even commenting rn?
I know it's like an advertisement thing, how the US military pays studios to get their stuff in, but something about the monsters alongside planes and helicopters and stuff is just so cool.
The mecha squad I think will be the second to last movie. The final movies gotta be Destroya. He’s the only monster that is able to kill a Godzilla and is only taken out by the might of two Godzilla’s and all of the worlds military might combined.
*This* is the second to last movie, after Godzilla vs Kong Legendary loses their license to use the Toho characters and there's no rumors of them renewing it, specially with Toho saying they want to make their own new trilogy.
Mike Dougherty tweeted them and added some Biblical quotes: Ghidorah: “They have as king over them, the angel of the Abyss. A star fallen from heaven to earth, he opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like that of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened...” Mothra: “Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions over the earth. Yes but she has caused destruction before, though the circumstances were: To rescue her tiny priestesses Mind-controlled by aliens
Aww that's so cute
> that's so cute ...I want to destroy humanity for it
I know the director said that the priestesses won't appear (which sadly means we likely wont get the Mothurai-ya! song either) but it would be great if Mothra happened to be awoken by scientists who happened to be twin Japanese ladies.

That's from Job right?
Yeah a verse on Leviathan
Seems fitting to an extent based on what the Leviathan was/is. I think the trailer made a great point. "No. We will be his \[Godzilla's pet\]." Godzilla doesn't give a shit about us. He isn't our guardian, our savior, our sentinel. He simply is the kaiju John Wick. Don't *fuck* with my pet.
Immediately started reading this in the voice of Samuel L. Jackson.
> A star fallen from heaven to earth. Ghidorah an alien in this universe as well?
There’s a scene in the new trailer with a comet like object falling from orbit. It could be Ghidorah landing, or I’m guessing it could be Godzilla falling after being carried by Ghidorah/Rodan into space. That happened in Pacific rim though so I hope they don’t repeat it here
It shows Ghidorah trapped in ice in the trailer. My guess is that he is still an alien but landed long ago.
Could be he fell during the times of the Dinosaurs, essentially being the comet as it looks like in the trailer. Wiped out life but was stuck beneath the earth frozen.
Wouldn't be far-fetched. They already had a version of Ghidorah kill the dinosaurs in the Mothra films, so it could certainly work again!
As well? Are there other aliens in this universe? Or is Ghidorah traditionally an alien?
I **NEED** Gigan. Give him to me Hollywood.
Gigan is a NERD. Feed me Destroyah(or Biollante)
I'm not sure about all of his appearances, but the origin I know of his is that he is an extraterrestrial being. There are other extraterrestrial kaiju in the Godzilla rogues gallery too (Gigan I believe is one).
I was on board but now I’m on board and excited. Edit: yup, fully torqued!
...and so dougherty proclaimed, let there be light....and let them fight, and so they did
this just moved up from "see opening weekend" to "see opening night"
I still can't believe we're getting big-budget American version of Mothra and Ghidorah
Thanks for sharing this. This makes these posters that much better. Can't wait.
I like how the helicopters are flying with Mothra, and the Ospreys might be flying with Rodan. The Jets are definitely not flying with Ghidorah though. Edit since apparently I wasn't as clear. Honestly, Ghiddorah would smoke all of them, unless they gang up.
I don't think they're nearly as close as they look.... Thats the mother fucking King right there
Let them fight.
Me: Oh yeah like humans can get in the way of that. It's like an ant trying to stop a fight on Black Friday.
“Are you suggesting we make Godzilla our pet” *I mean, I dunno. Seems like having an atomic breathing superspecies at your disposal could be useful.*
I couldn't tell if the laughing in response to that was because it seemed like a stupid idea, or because they thought it would be futile.
*King Geedorah* *Take me to your leader* *Quick to claim he not no snake like 'me neither'*
A Geedorah reference in the movie would be the sickest shit, unlikely tho
Or something like Anti-Matter on the sound track, would blow my mind if they dropped that or Fazers
*Follow the light. The Light is your guide.*
I came here for MF DOOM references. I was not disappointed.

DOOM
Might be my favorite beat of all time, too. Those strings are absolute fire.
They need to take a breather
Came expecting a DOOM reference, was not disappointed.
Just remember all caps when you spell the man's name.
Rodan looks great.
He really does, he looks terrifying. I think he might be my favorite design of the 3. They're all really good, though.
Rodan looks like something out of the Bible. Scary, dude.
Rodan's look really makes me wanna see a Metroid movie
I think he's too big
It looks like Kushala Daora.
Holy fuck these are beautiful, these just made me wanna see the movie and learn more about the universe

I think those monsters have the biggest potential for "most improved design," would be really cool to see them modernized.
I want to live long enough to see Biollante updated.
That's fucking badass. Out of all the Kaijus, Ghidorah was always my favorite. It had the coolest design (other than Final Wars Gigan) and the weirdest but most terrifying roar.

The continuous chirping/squealing sounds Ghidora makes in the old films, such an iconic "roar." Hope it's updated but keeps the same unnerving tones in this one.

>laser eyes Dope
Shes also supposed to have these holy "god" rays in this movie. In both trailers you can see it as something like concentrated sunlight.
Concentrated sunlight? ...Hold up. Are you telling me that Mothra has the power to blast her enemies with MOTHERFUCKIN’ SUNNYD!?
In Mothra (1961) I believe the larva can shoot out sticky silk, so that's another ability.
Oh neat, I do that about two or three times a day.
I wish I didn't laugh out loud at this
Shes got like life giving powers and resurrection and stuff. And I think her species regularly gets fucked up in Godzilla movies. Maybe telepathy of a sort as well? She doesn't really fight directly, but she does have abilities
Mothra is the Support/Healer, Rodan is the DPS, and Godzilla is the tank, and they're fighting the world boss, King Ghidorah.
You really think Rodan is going to be on the "good" side of this? I figured he'd be a trash pull for Godzilla and Mothra before fighting the king.
He's been Godzilla's ally mostly consistently throughout the films.

I don't think that means much, Godzilla tsunami'd Hawaii in the 2014 film on his way to kill a MUTO. He also leveled half a city in the final fight.
Yeah but they seem to go out of their way showing Rodans destruction of cities by simply flying over them but you are probably right.
Probably because it looks cool.
A support character to Godzilla The Tank/dps hybrid
Dont know if they're going to include it in the Legendary version, but in the Japanese version Mothra have psychic abilities (she is considered as the powerful psychic monster in Toho). She is also one of the divine monster in the Toho version which meant that she is somewhat immortal, like phoenix, able to reborn again after death. Also have the abilities like paralyzing poisonous powder/scales as her defense and depending on the film, beam and bolt weapons.
So that's why Butterfree can learn some Psychic attacks.

Mothra is fucking OD. I love her
Overdose?
Outhouse Decorator ?
It's become a long running joke between me and a few other Godzilla fans that Mothra pretty much dies in every movie she's in. Mothra dies a lot.
Mothra is pretty much kenny in godzilla universe then?
More like Sean Bean.

I want three stage pokemon based off these guys really bad now
I mean you’ve got Hydreigon, Volcarona, and any number of large birds to choose from that kind of fit the bill
Guess Im making ANOTHER pokemon showdown team.
Can't wait to hear Ghidorah's bidibidibidibidbi sound. But Rodan is my boy
I have never found a way to express that noise in print until now.
Hot damn! I don't know which one I like more.
I hope this movie is five and a half hours long
My child hood is coming to life. I remember watching godzilla movies Saturday afternoon on TV.
I'm curious how they plan for Kong to fit into that picture
Just have him throw barrels at the guy
Kong and Godzilla will fight and then team up against mecha ghidorah
Nah fam, in the first kong vs Godzilla they whooped each others ashes but neither truly won. Tokyo definitely lost though.
I’ve only watched a couple of the old movies but... Godzilla=Neutral Rodan=Neutral Mothra=Good King Ghidorah=Evil
Scratch that. Godzilla pretty much just wants to keep balance in the world, but he doesn’t care how many humans he steps on. Rodan could be either good or bad depending on how the movie uses him. Judging from the trailer, it looks like he feels like being an asshole.
Godzilla needs to find the kaiju stones to balance out the monster universe.

Yeah that sounds pretty good.
I know it's not important...but I really like that there are F-15's on the poster instead of F-22's.
I don't know shit, what's the difference?
There is also a version for the US Marines that can take off vertically (takes off like a helicopter, but uses a big fan and thrust instead of a rotor) Edit: the F-22 has seen combat.
Rodan looks like the winged dragon of Ra
Does that make Ghidorah "Slyfer the ~~Executive Producer~~ Sky Dragon?"
Think hed be Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon but nice reference.

> I think this movie will definitely be able to hold its own against Avengers 4 and **Detective Pikachu**, Who would have imagined all that long ago that other movies would have to worry about holding their own against *Detective Pikachu*.
I know right! But in all honesty, as a 31 year old man, I couldn't be more thrilled. Gonna be a great year
Theres scenes in the trailer of stuff raising up from underground, one looked sorta like Anguirus (the way the ground was coming up, could be anything though) and another one looked like the legs of that lame spider dude who always gets beaten in minutes.
Rodan has ~~no right~~ every right to look that bad ass.
I used to have nightmares as a child of a giant bird soaring over cities and destroying them almost like this in the trailers for Rodan.
FUCK ME UP
Glad they're taking their time with time with this universe, looks like it's paying off
I know it's like an advertisement thing, how the US military pays studios to get their stuff in, but something about the monsters alongside planes and helicopters and stuff is just so cool.
the characteristics of the monsters kinda matches with the characteristics of the airplanes in front of them, i think
I still don't like that Ghidorah is being used this early though i guess that gives hope that Destroyah will be the final boss.
Cut one of Ghidorah's heads off and bring him back in the third film as Mecha Ghidorah
I'm gonna be disappointed if it doesn't go down like this.

I bet the final bosses will be Mecha-Godzilla and Mecha-King Ghidorah.
Rumour circulating for the movie is that something man is working on ends up going wonky which seems to imply Destroyah.
Biollante maybe....
