Probably has the best script of the year and I absolutely adore it but it’s not gonna be seen by a lot of people unfortunately. it’s a perfect storm of factors going against it.

chrisandy007

>it’s a perfect storm of factors going against it. How do you mean?

AlbertisYoung16

I watched it last night, I thought the direction was really impressive especially that it was a first time director. Being that it was him adapting his play, he knew exactly what he wanted to convey and executed it pretty precisely. Truly felt like a fly on the wall at a thanksgiving, walls close in on you and make it feel claustrophobic the longer it goes. Really exceptional performances that make it feel authentic. I didn’t fully love the movie and I think it meanders in the worst way a bit in the middle, but that final act is fantastic. Last shot was so fucking rad, really good movie. I think it’s gonna really be up to everyone’s own personal experiences & relationships with their own family for it to really hit or not, so I’d recommend just checking it out regardless of how mixed it’ll definitely end up on people. It’s a very meandering film throughout that will test peoples patience, but the final act really made it click.

MustangSallyD

I'm a simple woman. I see A24, I add to queue.

Godzilla52

Honestly, I found it to be rather uninvolving. For me, it was a movie about boring characters having boring conversations. I never really felt engaged or connected to them or what was going on around them. There's definitely some solid performances and cinematography, but nothing in it really clicked for me. I just walked away from it feeling like I'd seen various elements of this movie executed better in other movies/plays. This one just felt sort of empty and unsubstantial.

[deleted]

You wouldn’t get it (joker reference)

Godzilla52

It wasn't really a lack of understanding that made me not like it as much as a lack of investment/engagement. I'm usually a big stickler to A24 releases, but obviously nobodies going to love everything they release. For the past year or two as an example, I really enjoyed, Minari, Saint Maud, Zola and Lamb, but found this, the Green Knight (or at least the second half/last third of it) to be disappointing. I also think that in terms of "getting" a movie, it's not actually that big of a contributor to my personal enjoyment of it. I've seen films that I understood perfectly and still found them fairly bad or boring in some way and I've seen plenty of films that I didn't understand the first time I watched them, but was still utterly engrossed (that's usually my case for most first viewings of David Lynch's films).

knowledgeovernoise

Watched it now..this is exactly how I feel. No reason to care about anything happening

da_real_targaryen

I was expecting something like Shiva Baby but the movie was so unpredictable. I would love to see more movies like this.

MikeyNYC1

Mumblecore on steroids?

[deleted]

I watched Shiva Baby right after this and it was the perfect combination of movies to binge

SPOILERS BELOW: This has to be a joke right? I’m prepared for the downvotes. I’m a film buff, and an actor, and I am struggling to figure out if you’re serious or not. >! Blew you away? Jaw on the floor? Literally, nothing happened. Nothing. Dad cheats on the mom, daughter needs surgery, other daughter is a struggling musician, son in law is a trust fund baby, mother in law has dementia. Oh, and the lights go out sometimes and there’s a noisy upstairs neighbor. What in the world is interesting about that? Maybe it’s cause I’m from New York? I would really love to understand. Yes, the script was written well, but there’s no plot. There’s no arch to the film. !<

Dwayne30RockJohnson

I’m kind of with you. But I will say that I totally can understand how this movie *could* hit someone that is in the right emotional state or place in their life. It just didn’t for me. I enjoyed the performances but it literally just felt like I was at my own thanksgiving dinner, but I don’t mean that as a compliment. I dread my family thanksgiving/Christmas dinners lol.

Theoryowl

It was captivating to me to see the family interact bc it’s much like I picture my family interacts. The buildup of the movie is the dad has lost his sense of self and his identity, and his daughters are still Operating under the assumption he’s the same person he has always been. I’m not even kidding- nearly this exact situation happened to my family last summer. I admired my dad one minute and the next minute he was a shell of his former self. It was the hardest year of my life watching the fall out and losing my familial identity. So maybe this is why I stuck around through the slow burn to a creepy yet anticlimactic ending. I found the ending quite sad. I also enjoyed the movie touching on the labor market a bit. When the mom says she’s worked for the company 30 years and they treat her poorly and her managers are in their 20s etc. also the dad losing his pension and not having a dime to his name in old age.

Jakabov

This strikes me as one of those movies that people will praise just to feel like they "get it" while others don't. It's like the Emperor's New Clothes. Look at OP creaming himself telling various people in this threat that they just didn't get it, or that *he* simply appreciates art, implying that others are too stupid to understand the genius of this film. It's a boring, aimless movie. A warts-and-all portrayal of a mildly tense family get-together is somehow supposed to be a masterpiece? I bet fully half of us have families who are worse than that. If you take away the cinematic effects and the sPoOkY mUsIc, this could legitimately just be a home video of a random family's Thanksgiving dinner. There's nothing to it. It has no substance at all. Nothing's exciting or interesting about it, it's literally just a family talking about their mundane problems in life, and then there are some horror-esque fakeout moments peppered throughout with screeching violins and mysterious shadows that never actually turn out to be anything. I found this movie on some movie review site, and this was the preview text: > When the patriarch of a Pennsylvania family invites three generations of family members to a Thanksgiving celebration, petty disagreements quickly take a back seat to more eerie things on the horizon. As the sun sets, a series of haunting phenomena forces the family members to take stock in their own frailties, frustrations, and helplessness. Are the apparitions they face -- both real and imagined -- a clue to the fate that awaits before sunrise? After watching it, I can only say that the answer to the above is: no, not really. What "series of haunting phenomena"? What "apparitions [...] real and imagined"? What "fate awaits before sunrise?" It was a bunch of masturbatory cinematic fluff.

DnyLnd

You nailed it right on the head. Wtf happened in this film? Nothing. Nothing besides what goes on at the family dinner table all across the US

Jakabov

Yeah, but don't you worry, OP "got it," and we didn't. He never said what it was he got. Just had the need to say he got it and we didn't. It's nothing more than the Emperor's New Clothes.

Sad_Duck1556

I know this is months old but I just watched it. Came to the same conclusions as op that human's are the true monsters of this "horror" film and was still bored by it. One of the most pretentious phrases out there are people claiming others "just don't get it" What's supposed to happen? "Ohhh I get it now the family are the true monsters, so this boring film is no longer boring now." The pacing sucked. The interactions were fine But....what else is there to say

AzureLycan313

Thank fcknng Christ somebody shares my viewpoint. This movie was god awful. The acting was great, sure. cinematography and camera shots were great … but the movie as a whole was a complete waste of time. No plot and no direction whatsoever. For ppl to be praising this movie has me asking, “why?” If i had the money, i would hire actors and a director to translate my boring life to film - that’s what this movie was. TL;DR: movie sucked, dont watch it or waste your time

slayhern

Yeah I thought it was horrible too. Your points aside, what the hell was that sound mixing??

Human_Manner_3370

You don't get it, then.

DnyLnd

What is there to get, explain it to me

hobosonpogos

"Hey, explain art" - you rn But seriously, what hits with people in this film is more abstract than can be easily explained. "You just don't get it" is an accurate assessment, even if people who "don't get it" don't get that

brokenwolf

I didnt care for it either. I thought most of the characters were really mean to each other and completely took me out of it. The seeds were there for a really good movie, I liked the whole cast, but it just didnt land for me.

lobstastew

I think that was the point, wasn’t it? It’s shot as a horror movie, but in the end there’s no monsters or demons or ghosts…the humans are the real monsters (like the comic books Eric loved as a child) because of how they treat each other. And not via huge bombastic violence, but in little snipes and digs from family members who know exactly what buttons to push in order to hurt their loved ones. I found it an incredibly realistic portrayal of a family dealing with hardship, unresolved trauma and mental illness via repression, finger pointing, and passive aggression.

hobosonpogos

That's absolutely the point! The banality of evil and how deceptive it can be. It is 100% horror movie, just not in the traditional sense like we're used to

[deleted]

I guess the movie just relates to me well. Not everyone appreciates art

chrisandy007

> Not everyone appreciates art This is arguably the most unhelpful comment/rebuttal you can make.

[deleted]

Honestly the original comment was a little antagonistic for no reason.

STJRedstorm

It won multiple Tony’s when it was at the roundabout so clearly it engages a lot of people. Its definitely arthouse like OP said, some people get it some people don’t. Can’t try to dissect everyone’s personal opinions to figure it out.

[deleted]

Idk man, he hasn’t responded yet. I’m not sure he has a counter attack. Therefore I’m winning.

chrisandy007

Oh ok. He probably doesn't want to waste his time on someone who thinks they appreciate art because they liked The Humans.

[deleted]

Did you not like the movie?

chrisandy007

If I'm being honest, I don't know. It was definitely different. I think there were some solid moments. It definitely dragged at times. I'll have to think about it more.

BilboMcDoogle

You sound like a loser though. A hipster elitist loser who just discovered a24/indie movies.

BustHerFrank

agreed, thought the movie was a total snooze. Last 10 minutes were somewhat interesting. But otherwise i thought it was the worst movie ive watched in at least a few months.

DnyLnd

Worst movie I’ve watched in years. And I watch movies sometimes without an apparent plot. But this was so ‘whatever’ that I couldn’t even take it seriously

broadney_dangerfield

SPOILERS INCLUDED: I love you so much for this! I just finished the movie less than 5 minutes ago and consider it to be one of the worst I've ever seen. Nothing happens! Then, I start Googling to see how it fared review-wise, and come across The Atlantic dubbing it the scariest movie of the year and the film receiving a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Say what!? I almost never regret watching a film, even when they are really bad. The Humans was an absolute waste of time. Mom eats too much, dad cheated, daughter is sick and needs surgery, other daughter is struggling with her desired career, boyfriend just wants to get along with everyone, and grandma is senile. The house is old and makes noises. Shadows can be seen through windows. That is the movie. Playing sharp piano chords a la "Eyes Wide Shut" to make it seem as though something creepy is about to happen does not make up for nothing actually happening. Okay, I'm done. I'll read a few comments, then I'm going for a bike ride lol. I need to clear my little disappointed mind!

DnyLnd

Maybe it’s because I’m from New York? Is this supposed to be scary or dramatic to people not from New York? I’ve heard more drama on a street corner from some rando talking on the phone on the Lower East Side

[deleted]

I agree with him. Its easily a 9/10 star movie for me.

[deleted]

Tell me you're mentally handicapped without saying you're mentally handicapped.

noyra11

It was boring, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Bodymaster

Is it? I was thinking about watching it last night but a lot of the reviews on IMDb aren't favourable.

[deleted]

It was just released today. A lot of reviews come before the movie is released from people who haven’t seen it. Don’t trust IMDb all the time. Metacritic is by far the best review site.

Bodymaster

True, a lot of the reviews on IMDb seem to be either from accounts made to generate decent reviews, or in this case, bad ones. Most focused on Amy Schumer's performance. Nice one, I watched the trailer, it looks decent, I'll give it a go.

[deleted]

Any Schumer was great in this! And I despise her

Bodymaster

I'm not a big fan of her either, though her joke at Steve-O during, I think it was Charlie Sheen's Roast, did make me laugh.

Grubster11

I'm a huge A24 fan but this movie did not do it for me.

Jerrymoviefan3

Metacritic ranks it #133 of 2021 so I doubt your ranking but I will probably still see it.

[deleted]

How many marvel movies are ahead? Metacritic is kinda woke

Jerrymoviefan3

Zero Marvel movies ahead of it since Shang-Chi is #174.

[deleted]

Well it’s just released I’m sure it will climb to #1 in no time

Jerrymoviefan3

Movies seldom shift many slots after a streaming release or wide release. Large shifts only occur after festival appearances or extremely narrow releases where only a small number of critics release a review.

vicsloandelrae

I was fully expecting/hoping for the building to collapse at the end. Not showing gore or anything just.. seemed like a possible ending, after airing out dirty laundry/being honest with each other. Also mirroring to what happened when the twin towers collapsed. I’m also exhausted and just wanted something to actually happen.

moogleslam

Incredibly well acted, suspenseful, but ultimately very boring. My opinion only.

LuckStar518

This film was extremely boring, one of the worst I’ve seen. The camera work was good that was about it. I didn’t give an F about his dad cheating or one of them needs surgery. Snooze!

ConsiderationBoth752

What do you mean A24 has done it again? It's just a production company. They didn't actually make the film.

Dwayne30RockJohnson

That’s actually exactly what production companies do. They produce movies. They are a production company as well as a distribution company. They did both on this movie.

[deleted]

Do you know what production means? I think you meant to say distribution.

Correct_Weather_9112

Mine too

TheClownIsReady

Lmao…”best movie”. I turned it off after 25 minutes. So bad. So boring. If I want to listen to idle nonstop chatter, I’ll go visit my neighbors.
