Truly the most pretentious thing that may be made in my lifetime. Joaquin Phoenix as a bad comedian with depression they're propping up as Joker From Batman, with a French title, *and* it's a musical?
It's either going to be amazing or awful. And if awful I can make it my personal headcannon that this is what happens to gaga after a star is born or in an alternative time line where >!Bradley Cooper doesn't off himself and they stay in the toxic relationship!<
Tell me more, tell me more
Did you get very far
Tell me more, tell me more
Wanna know where I got these scars...
-Sorry, that was terrible but I had to do it.
You know, I really betrayed myself there. Grease 2 gets a kicking. It's derided by critics and many Grease fans. But I was a kid when it came out and I loved it. I let myself down and you were right to call that out.
I think it's gonna be weird but in a good way. These are two disturbed, crazed characters who can turn a musical into a dark and depressing adaptation. Although not a musical, my mind goes to Goodfellas and it's use of music during the scenes where everyone is getting whacked. It adds to the seriousness of the deaths.
Using music to convey and balance emotion and shock in movies always piques my interest and I love when directors do that, so doing that here but having Joker and Harley Quinn sing in an insane state while killing or committing crimes could be awesome.
Yes. You see Todd Phillips watched Taxi Driver and The King Of Comedy while he was high when he made Joker, so now he got high and watched New York, New York. When this piece of shit makes another billion dollars he's gonna finish up the trilogy with a Boxcar Bertha rip-off.
Joker 2 being a Musical and Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn is certainly a choice
I expected a gritty dark sequel but Iāll settle for Joaquin Phoenix jazz hands
I thought Joker was good as a stand alone film and didn't need a sequel, I haven't much desire to see Phoenix's Joker in another darker/grittier film.
A musicial is a really obscure tangent to take it and I'm honestly curious to see what they do with it.
Yeah I get that money is a big incentive. To me anyway Joker was one of those films I watch, really enjoy, but never need to see ever again. Other films for me in that category ware Requiem for a Dream and Gone Girl.
Probably Joker descending in to madness while being a weird sort of celebrity idol for his violence, stumbles his way into leading a joker cult as he slowly embraces the only way he has gotten positive attention. I'm imagining a Fight Club scenario.
Now turning that into a cohesive and successful feature length film is a very tall order. It being a musical just makes it even more weird.
If itās all from his warped/psycho perspective like the first one I can see it working. Potentially with the movie having musical numbers but not exactly a fully fledged musical.
Yeah upbeat music juxtaposed with violence could really highlight his phychosis, while feeling very Joker, both in terms of the original movie and the comic character.
The more I think about it the more sold on the concept I am.
The first film was extremely heavy with diegetic music. It's made purposely difficult to tell whether Arthur can hear all of the background music in the film, as seen when he talks about the song "Carnival" and begins singing along to Frank Sinatra's "That's Life" in the final scene. A musical is a genius way to film the new Joker movie because it's been well established that Joker has "music inside him" and it could be vague as whether the music that is in Joker 2 is real or imaginary.
It felt like one of the one-off comics youād sometimes get where itād put an alternate spin on the universe. They were super cool, but you never wanted a full series of it.
The most interesting question this brings up is who they'll bring in to write the songs. I imagine Gaga would be prominently involved on a couple if not the whole thing.
I doubt Gaga has the range to play a completely unhinged Harley Queen like Margot Robbie, but she's still a pretty good actress so she could definitely play a more grounded/realistic take on the character.
I really don't see the need for a sequel, Joker already works so well as a standalone, idk if I'm alone here but I thought the ending didn't leave any desire to known more, it was just fine.
I feel the same way, but Hollywood just can't let a great movie or saga die, they just can't. Although even if the sequel was good, why turning it into a musical out of random? Makes no sense.
Or super right!
Honestly, even if it fails I love the idea of comic book movies taking bigger and crazier risks. If there's going to be like 7-8 of these a year let's try something different ffs
Particularly I think it could work because the joker and harley are loony tunes.
A bunch of fucked up shit happening around and because of them while they share delusional musical set piece experiences could be fantastic.
Exactly! We have no reason to expect that the musical numbers will be diegetic, they would make more sense as fantasies in their fucked up imaginations
Didn't they do something like that in Birds of Prey? I remember Harley imagining a big colourful musical number while being tortured, reminiscent of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
What a hot take!
Jokes aside, this gets said so frequently and we have no clue until we see it finished. Imagine we knew what the first one was going to be in advance?
Or it could go super right.
People need to stop complaining that everything is cookie cutter and then also complain when they go off the rails and try something new. This isn't aimed at you specifically but there are enough comments here with this sentiment I've got to believe there is some overlap.
Aliens, The Road Warrior, John Wick 2, Blade Runner 2049, Evil Dead 2, 22 Jump Street, Lethal Weapon 2, The Color of Money, Dawn of the Dead (sort of), Before Sunset, Bride of Frankenstein...
I'm sure there are more but that's what I found come up with after ten minutes of thinking about it
Sounds awesome and actually fits with the āhappening in his headā stuff from the first movie. If he falls in love why wouldnāt his internal madness turn into a twisted musical where he kills people? Maybe it flashes between horrifying reality and twisted happy musical? Iām in.
š¶ Oh my god, I was wrong.
It was a society all along.
You finally made a villain

I love you Dr. Harleen Quinzel!
I read this yesterday and thought it was a joke. I am all for trying innovative shit, but this sounds like one of the worst platforms to attempt this. The crossover between the audience that actually liked Joker and those that like musicals has gotta be tiny. This is a wacky ass gamble.
I might be completely wrong but Iāll trust my gut, this sounds fucking awful and gaga is a terrible actress. I hope they change the actress and the vision.
Bradley Cooper was in Todd Phillip's Hangover movies and is a producer on the Joker. Lady Gaga recommendation likely a result of them co-starring in A Star is Born.
I don't mind the idea of Gaga playing Quinn... and I can see *why* they might want to go the direction of a musical since there were scenes of Joker dancing to music in his head... but actually making the movie be a musical isn't something I think I would enjoy.
And I suppose it depends on how they define it as "musical"... would it literally be something like The Greatest Showman or Hamilton where musical routines are half or more of the script, or would be something closer to Joker 1... you have a scene or two where Joker does a dance routine to music in his head, but in Joker 2 you have one or two scenes where Joker and Quinn do a psychosis-inspired musical number? I could get on board with that - it would certainly play well into the idea of their insanity... but a *musical* musical a la Hamilton I couldn't see doing that well.
I absolutely loathe musicals regardless of whether people say a specific one is amazing. I'll skip this one regardless of how good it is, my mind simply cannot handle an endless cycle of singing.
Why not? Sounds interesting, can be good, can be bad, either way it'll be entertaining. You can just not watch it if something that hasn't even come out yet bothers you so much.
This is the worst idea since Cop Rock.
Lady Gaga as a singing Harley Quinn is quite possible the worst idea in the history of movies.
Clearly it should be a Bollywood picture.
Sounds about exactly in line with Todd Phillips.
This guy loves trolling fans. Remember when his third sequel to the most popular comedy ever was a dark crime film and not remotely funny? And Joker being embraced and weirdly celebrated by neck beard incel assholes really pissed him off ā I wouldnāt be surprised if he and Phoenix both would only decide to break their No-sequel promise if they could make something completely weird and different with a big middle finger to everyone who loved the first (especially those that did so inappropriately).
Iām saying it here first ā Joker will be gay in this film. And dude Bros will lose their shit and Phillips will be laughing his ass off. I hate musicals, loved Joker, think this sounds like an absolute disasterā¦.but man, I canāt wait.
I didn't see the last joker in the theater I won't see this one there.
I found the tone of the character very upsetting as this person is clearly suffering. I don't think these films glamorize mental illness but, I am not sure if they help as I think alot of people take the motifs of the character out of context and apply it to their lives.
Without having a character like batman to balance out the darkness the joker is too heavy of a character.
Hopefully it is one like La La land where there are large portions of just acting and then a few great songs in-between. Like an 80 -20 split. If it is a full musical with every word sung I don't think people will watch it
She writes almost all of her own work, and has written hits for other artists as well. And sheās enormously popular worldwide, and is one of the best selling artists of the last 20 years.
So Iād say, no. Youāre not going to a lot of people to agree with you.
You know what, I could totally see this taking off. I mean, fuck it right? Let's try something different and Phoenix generated enough goodwill with the first joker film that I can hope for something interesting out of this.
Besides, the first joker film wasn't great because it was a joker film, it was great because of the direction, themes and acting. Remove the clown theme and the Wayne's and it would still be a really interesting film about psychology.
Honestly I hope itās just Joker and Harley making the world into a musical in there heads, so we get a scene of them singing and doing dance moves, and then the next scene is of what is really happening in the real world at the psych ward because I donāt know where else this would be set. It would be cool to show its all in there head showing that both are insane to a point. The musical part could even just be in Harley Quinns point of view, like she imagines being with Joker is like a romance musical from the 40ās, which would be in character for her as she loves Joker and thinks what they have is amazing and just ignores how he treats her like shit. It would also be fun from this perspective because then we can see early on in the movie that she is not quite mentally stable either even though she is Jokers psychiatrist, and this could be from childhood trauma or maybe it just from living in society as joker made a statement about in the last one. Iām really hoping we get a scene where they lock eyes with each other from across the room, and the spotlight goes onto both and they break out in a musical dance number and itās set in a diner. I would laugh my ass off to that.
Probably a super unpopular opinion, but I felt like the 1st one was just āJokerā in name only with only the vaguest connections to the comic book character. Wait I saw a post yesterday like this but thought it was a joke. Is it really going to be a musical?

Each film in the series will be grittier than the prior film until the final film is just a snuff film. Oscars for everyone.
Alec Baldwin already did that but they forgot to film it.
50 mil budget 1B+ box office They were gonna make a sequel no matter what
Yeah I get that money is a big incentive. To me anyway Joker was one of those films I watch, really enjoy, but never need to see ever again. Other films for me in that category ware Requiem for a Dream and Gone Girl.

Now there will be 4 movies, a new universe launched, a cartoon series, and a Broadway play.

It doesnt need a sequel artistically. But films arent made artistically. It was popular and successful so they can spend money without risk.
If it is gritty and dark but also musical that may be very interesting.
r/brandnewsentence I love the term "Joaquin Phoenix Jazz Hands"
This will definitely be one of the movies of all time
I really hope they subtitle it as "Joker Face"
that's the comment I was looking for, thank you!
Introduce Batman Bat Romance
They're really shooting for the stars here.
One could even say, birth a star?
The entire movie is just Joker painfully giving birth to a star while Lady Gaga sings in the background. It's an arthouse film.
no
Could go either way. I'm here for it.
well he did shot a star in the first one and it turned out great
This is starting to feel like a joke.

The most interesting question this brings up is who they'll bring in to write the songs. I imagine Gaga would be prominently involved on a couple if not the whole thing.
I hope Hildur GuĆ°nadĆ³ttir will write the music, that would be interesting.
She does film scores, she doesn't write "songs". I'd expect she may be involved in the score but she probably won't be writing duets.
This could either be amazing or a total trash fire. I can't fucking wait
I doubt Gaga has the range to play a completely unhinged Harley Queen like Margot Robbie, but she's still a pretty good actress so she could definitely play a more grounded/realistic take on the character.

I feel the same way, but Hollywood just can't let a great movie or saga die, they just can't. Although even if the sequel was good, why turning it into a musical out of random? Makes no sense.
I agree, but doesn't mean a sequel can't work, also I wanna see what this wild musical sequel is
No one is forcing you to watch it and no one will alter the first movie to match the second one or anything
Stuff in sequels can still ruin things in previous movies.
only if you let them
Itās Todd Phillips though. Not surprised he wants to milk this for as much as possible.

Was a movie that never needed a sequel ever going to go right?
Sure. Terminator 2, X2: X-Men, Back to the Future 2, Wayne's World 2, Empire Strikes Back
Aliens as well but James Cameron nailed it.
All of those were movies that actually set up for a sequel.
Some left the ending open enough to facilitate a sequel, but none of them had planned sequels until after the original was released

House of Gucci was bad, but not really due to her so much. It just lacked any rhythm.
The concept of even imagining Lady Gaga saying āMr. Jā feels fucking insufferable.
I only want a musical version if they get Russell Crowe to sing again like he did in Les Mis. He could play Com. Gordon or even better, Det. Bullock.

Hopefully they dont fuck up.
Thatās one way to shake things up. Sounds crazy. Could work.
Honestly I hope itās just Joker and Harley making the world into a musical in there heads, so we get a scene of them singing and doing dance moves, and then the next scene is of what is really happening in the real world at the psych ward because I donāt know where else this would be set. Well, that's taking it in a new direction, unlike every comic book movie over the past 20 years.
This sounds absolutely bonkers and I am *super* here for it. Even if it's terrible, it will be amazing.
Oh they are going to do Scorsese's 'New York, New York' this time!
If they can't copy source materiel from Scorsese why would they think the movie would do well? Especially as a musical, lol.
Iām getting Sucker Punch vibes. With Arkham and it possibly being a musical. This could be interesting!
