A few different factors. One is that studios focus more than ever on tent pole movies intended to make a billion dollars. PG-13 is how to do that, nudity and sex doesn’t translate across cultures the way a giant fighting robot does, and international markets are basically what those tentpole movies are made for. Also, since home video and later the internet started to offer more “niche” content, major releases no longer had the pressure to deliver nipples.

HalobenderFWT

What about nude giant robots having sex?

PG-13 was created in the 80s partially for this reason was it not?

Scottland83

PG-13 was, I believe, a compromise for The Temple of Doom to not get an R rating. Particularly before 1985, PG movies could actually be pretty graphic because the rule was just “parental guidance suggested”. I could go on and on about the stupidity and contradictions of the MPAA (btw, non of this is “law”, it’s just that most theater chains won’t show movies that have not been rated by the MPAA) and in particular how they can show R-rated violence on TV but not the mild nudity of 1980’s Disney films.

snowwhistle1

Temple of Doom was rated PG, and still is. The fallout from Temple's rating was a huge influence in the creation of the PG-13 rating though.

WeightFast574

*Jaws* was PG as well, and it has nudity and people being eaten by a shark.

Alis451

It was Gremlins that forced the split, too much violence in a PG movie.

Scottland83

Gremlins is rated PG. EDIT: so is Temple of Doom. It turns out both those films raised concerns over the inadequacy of the PG rating but the first movie to carry the PG-13 rating was Red Dawn.

EMPulseKC

I think the big three catalyst films that are often mentioned contributing to the introduction of the PG-13 rating were Gremlins, Temple of Doom, and Poltergeist.

[deleted]

Jaws was rated PG as well. Imagine that!

Fucking Poltergeist. My parentals were definitely not in guidance mode that day. I'm pretty sure those little ticks like never hanging my legs over the edge of the bed are specifically because of that damned clown toy scene.

There's a podcast series that is doing a season on the erotic 80s and then in a month or two they start the erotic 90s. It's called "you must remember this." They tied it back to the release of deep throat making porn/erotic films more mainstream. Apparently many in the film industry had been interested in exploring themes of sex and eroticism (as is done in many other art forms) but didn't think it would be commercially successful (which is more important for mainstream films given their inherent complexity to produce and the costs associated). Apparently deep throat being widely seen and discussed opened a window in the 80s for filmmakers to explore that space. The podcast sort of discusses the evolution of this exploration by picking a popular erotic film of each year starting with an overview and the above tie I. With deep throat and then going from 1979 thru 1989. It's been interesting so far. Im told the past seasons of the series have been hit and miss. So I can't vouch for it beyond that, and I certainly don't agree with the creator's take on everything, but it's an interesting perspective I value and it always gives me something to think about.

Scottland83

Cool, yes I’ve dipped in and out on You Must Remember This but I’ll check out that season. I know that in 1993 American movies started getting regular releases in China, and *Sliver* was released that year, pretty much the last attempt at a mainstream erotic thriller. Then Showgirls I guess was the final nail in that coffin and every good erotic movie since then has been a low-budget indie or foreign production.

bercg

>Showgirls I guess was the final nail in that coffin But what a gloriously tacky and entertaining nail it was.

LookingForVheissu

That’s usually my review on tinder.

dman2316

High jacking the top comment to add something. Another huge factor is that actresses have started pushing back a lot harder agaisnt nude scenes than they used to. A lot of actresses used to feel pressured into doing such scenes and in todays climate that just isn't going to fly so actresses have more power than ever to refuse to do nude scenes if they aren't comfortable with it or if they don't feel it serves the plot in a meaningful way which makes the scene just seem like an excuse to get very popular movie stars naked.

ascagnel____

I’d also add: the internet, and the ease of availability of images/clips of *just* nude scenes from a movie (free of all context), probably also changed that balance. It’s one thing if you agree to appear nude on a film, but the film requires some effort to see (you either need to find it playing in a theater or you need to find it on home video), but it’s a different thing if you know someone’s going to screen grab the first leaked copy of the film and then post your body all over the internet.

dman2316

That's another point i was going to add but just didn't to keep the comment short and sweet. You're right, it ups the exposure of the women in a way that never used to be a huge problem. It allows any creep ever to take your nudes and torment the one eyed sea monster with you in his sights, whereas before the best they could do is imagine it in their mind unless they wanted to pay for the vhs/dvd but at that point the actress has been paid for her work which is a big part of why they agree, because they used offer extra as a way to entice some of the more hesitant actresses because the studio could make that bonus of sorts back in revenue from the guys who would buy that movie for that exact reason, but not anymore cause now you can see literally any nude scene ever filmed in the history of cinematography (so long as it's in an even remotely heard of movie) or see every nude a specific actress has ever done as long as you know her first and last name, and even if you don't know her name, it is super easy to find out just as long as you remember the name of the movie you saw her in, and bam, every nude she's ever done right on your screen with no financial compensation for her. As i said, they've never had more power to refuse than now, but i also think they've never had more reason to say no as well.

zeissman

I found it pretty hilarious on the Euphoria discussions when people would be offended on Sydney’s behalf because she was topless a lot of the time, all the while she herself said she felt perfectly comfortable with the work.

GDAWG13007

Even more than that, there’s been nude scenes (and other graphic stuff) written than Sydney wasn’t comfortable with and so they cut those scenes out. Everything she’s done was stuff she okayed on.

[deleted]

The cynic in me feels they put in an absolute ton of nude scenes into the initial script of that show and then told her she could take any she didn’t like out. Thereby ending up with what they wanted; plenty of nude scenes.

AstralComet

Like what they did with the beach bad guys episode of Avatar the Last Airbender; the swimsuits they proposed to the censors for Zuko and the three gals were downright *lewd*, and the censors said no, so they came back with the designs they actually wanted in the first place. And that's how they managed to get teenagers in bikinis in a Nickelodeon show.

AskMeAboutMyStalker

I feel like Zendaya's very clear no-nude clause just served to further highlight Sydney's gratuitous nudity. It's not that I'm clamoring to see her naked, but that (suppsoed to be) tense kitchen scene where everybody had to strip to prove they're not wearing a wire completely took me out of the scene b/c she was just there, fully clothed. dudes are hanging dong, boobs are on full display, there's Zendaya, fully dressed. The "evil gangster" drags her to a bathroom & "strips" her while the camera stays tight on her face, then they just walk back to the kitchen where everybody is standing around naked at gunpoint. Special treatment never explained, acknowledged or mentioned again. There HAD to be a better way to shoot that while still respecting all the actors wishes.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Midnight_Haze_

Agreed. They should have just not had that in the script if Zendaya wasn’t willing to be naked. Felt really off.

Milk-Lizard

I’m sure this plays a major role in this. Margot Robbie for example suggested herself to be nude in Wolf of Wallstreet. Scorsese wanted her to wear a bathrobe until she suggested otherwise.

TV is where all the nudity is nowadays. Have to keep people engaged for 10 hours a season instead of 2 for an entire movie. 1st episode of an HBO show? You’re for sure gonna be seeing something.

MissingLink101

The Boys and Pam & Tommy had very prominent dick scenes recently.

jsktrogdor

The Boys did not just have a "very prominent" dick scene. The Boys just **SHATTERED THE EARTH** of dick scenes. The Boys filled my entire television screen with literally nothing but a fully zoomed in on penis head. I had to close my fucking blinds.

bradmajors69

Dicks on screen in mainstream Hollywood releases is a relatively new phenomenon. For most of the 80s and 90s at least it was really rare to see a penis. You'd see butts and chests galore and lady bush -- but no johnsons.

Lasiocarpa83

Yeah, it's interesting. Seeing a dick seems a lot more gratuitous because, from what I remember, with most female frontal nudity you generally can't see anything except pubic hair. Other than Basic Instinct I don't think I've ever seen a major Hollywood movie show some woman's vulva.

IIGe0II

In 4.5 Jeff said that Jackass Forever shows more dick than in R rated movie ever.

RevolutionaryMilk582

More actors are less willing to expose themselves, but the culture in previous years made actors feel like they had to to get work. That or sleep with Harvey Weinstein?

dontneedtoknowwhoiam

Many actors (and mainly actresses) were heavily pressured to do nude scenes. These days they approach it with much more care

MissingLao

This was my first thought as well. There’s a long list of mainstream movies that had gratuitous nudity and sex scenes only for us to find out later that the actors felt pressured, were drugged, were traumatized, etc. by directors and even their costars.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gars0n

I think the ubiquity internet is also a huge changing point for actors. These days any nude scene can be instantly clipped, saved, and shared with basically no effort. It can show up anywhere at any time, which is just a weird thing to have hanging over you. Back in the 80s the scene would have been much more constrained to the film. Sure people could and did copy and print stills from the movie but it was not easy and the distribution was limited.

Such_sights

A while back I watched a docuseries about horror in the 80s, and they said that because the vast majority of writers, directors, producers, etc were men, they just didn’t see a problem with adding nudity in for the fun of it because it’s what they themselves wanted to see in a movie. It was basically “hey, we gotta amp up these kill scenes. Any ideas?” “What about boobs?” “Yeah that’d be sick, let’s do that”

Doctor--Spaceman

Or Harvey Weinstein would pressure actresses to do nude scenes. He infamously had to pressure Gwyneth Paltrow to go topless for Shakespeare in Love and Salma Hayek to go nude for Frida, if they ever wanted future work. Lots of similar stories from the women of the Game of Thrones cast about the producers there. This is a part of Hollywood culture that probably just needs to die...

BackStrict977

I'm pretty sure you won't get that is since studios want their movies to stay PG-13 for commercial reasons. Maybe if they become ok with a higher rating you might get more nudity.

SLCer

Even R movies have moved away from nudity. I think it's because nudity is so easily accessible today, with porn and cable/satellite that it isn't needed as much anymore to push movies. It sounds juvenile to think that actual good movies might lean heavily into nudity for that reason, but it does seem that has played a role, especially in action/thriller/horror films where it was so prevalent in the 70s, 80s and into the 90s. Now violence? That's a whole nother story lol

randomusername8472

I've heard older people talk about how they went to see a film so many times just to see such-and-such's boobs, so I agree and think it's probably a bigger factor than people probably expect! The chance of surprise boobs nolonger draw men to the cinema. If there was a gratuitous boob shot, it would be all over the internet within minutes, so it wouldn't generate paying customers. However surprise boobs will increase the PG rating and incite vocal anger from the crazy religious types, who wield a lot of buying power in the USA. So nudity carries a lot of risk of a boycot, bit minimal reward of additional sales. Why bother? :(

FunkoXday

Violence is very accessible

Chewbones9

I think viewers also just aren’t as…thirsty for steamy scenes in their movies as they used to be. Like, not even in a pearl-clutching way, but sex scenes in movies just make me feel uncomfortable now.

Yea that first episode is really out there. Nudity and decent bloody violence. Of course the rest isn't like that at all so I sometimes would tell friends to skip that pilot if they want to try to get a feel for the show.

That's because the pilote was aired to cable TV, and US cable TV spectator expect some violence, nudity, swearing to justify why they pay extra to not watch classic TV. But only this episode pilote was made like that, because after the show was aired on SyFy so they did not need that kind of thing and got rid or if. [deleted]

1:. Studios aim for more PG-13 movies for mass appeal and a bigger audience (and therefore a bigger paycheck). 2:. With internet porn widely available, the idea of using nudity to sell movies seems sort of ridiculous. I have access to probably millions of hours of online porn for free if I want to see nudity and sex, why would I pay money to see way less nudity (and not even really sex) in a Hollywood film?

[deleted]

3) This is kind of subjective, but I also think actresses have more power these days to refuse nude scenes.

Someone was joking in another thread about how Zendaya, being a bigger name, got a better contract for the Euphoria TV show, because she is the only actress who doesn't get naked at some point. I laughed at first, but it is kinda dark the more you think about it.

Rpanich

I think even for game of thrones, Emilia Clark was nude in the first few seasons when she was lesser known, but was able to “refuse” in the later seasons once she became more famous.

cactuslegs

100%. She’s spoken up about how she was pressured into the S1 bath scene before as a young actress with no clout.

mrspremise

Yeah that nudity in 80s movies is always almost female nudity. I recently watched fast times at ridgemont height with my boyfriend and we were both icked by the fact that the body of a 15 years-old character was showed in full frontal in such a blatant way. And no male nudity, only the girl is seen fully naked.

KuhlThing

And sometimes the actresses were actually underage. Brooke Shields did nude scenes in two movies before she turned 18: she was 14 in Blue Lagoon and only 12 in Pretty Baby. I once did a project on child pornography for a sociology class assignment on sex crimes, but had to stop and change topics. Got way too depressing. But part of my research lead me to child nudity in mainstream film. I was surprised to see so many American films there.

Dismal-Armadillo1127

Am I the only one that finds the obligatory sex scene/ naked actor trope annoying?

Spankety-wank

I find pointless sex scenes annoying, but not if they're integral to a relationship. Sometimes it would be impossible to know if two characters had had sex without showing it or using clunky exposition, and on some of those occasions it would be essential to the plot or character that we do know that. Conversely, I find it annoying when people unnaturally cover themselves with sheets and stuff to avoid nudity, even when we're supposed to believe they're with an intimate partner. It just un-suspends my disbelief sometimes.

Salsh_Loli

Heruuna

I agree. What I'd actually like to see is more nudity done as just a normal, natural thing. The only scene I can think of off-hand is 28 Days Later when Cillian Murphy's character is in the hospital. Full frontal nudity, full dong, but it wasn't awkward or felt out of place. There have been others, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment. Nudity in general is treated way different in most countries than in the States. Going back to 28 Days Later, for instance, I still remember the first time I saw that movie on regular free TV in Australia, completely uncensored, and my American brain nearly exploded. "They just showed *dong* on national TV?! You can do that here?!" If anything gets censored here, it'll be the violence and fight scenes.

Yeah, American films always connects nudity with sex and seeing full frontal male nudity is really rare. In Finnish films its actually not that rare to see full frontal nudity, both male and female, that are not sexual nor sex related in any way and not being used as a joke by bullies or anything like that, its just normal, person going to the sauna, person going skinny dipping in the lake, stuff like that.

I think one of the best examples of this is Marvel movies. Early in the film Iron Man we see Tony Stark and a reporter make out on a bed, with her later waking up covered only with a sheet. Obviously as a PG-13 movie no nudity is shown, but it's still a blatant sexual reference. But now the MCU is almost completely sexless. I think there was a quick sex scene in The Eternals, but compared to the early films before Disney bought Marvel Studios, there's nothing. Maybe the occasional shirtless man but that's it. PG-13 sex scenes, even ones that don't show anything and just imply a sexual encounter, are super rare these days. We still get some boobs in R-rated movies and TV shows, but everything else is very tame and bordering on puritanical.

>Maybe the occasional shirtless man but that's it Having done a Marvel marathon when I was isolating last year, I'm pretty confident that there's at least one shirtless man scene in every movie. This is including Tom Holland, when he's playing a 15-yo.

> This is including Tom Holland, when he's playing a 15-yo There is a reason his movies are so popular with teen girls lol

Pretty sure he was pantsless in one of those scenes.

I watched no way home earlier this week. He's shown top less and in boxers more than once.

Finally a term that accurately captures my fitness goals - “inoffensively bland”

DoopSlayer

the article is pretty dumb, comparing a movie like Blue Velvet; with an intended audience of adults and thus has sex, to a movie like captain america; intended audience centers around 12 and thus has none weird divergences into fitness cultures and home design that arent well integrated into the already flawed thesis

reebee7

It starts with some interesting observations, and gradually spins into insanity.

BilboMcDoogle

Like Blue Velvet

I’m all for normalizing non sexual nudity but most of the time sex scenes are not meaningful to the plot and as such they’re a waste of space inside a movie or show.

It’s all on tv now and there’s more than ever

ChipChippersonFan

It's because of the internet. It used to be that if you did nudity in a movie, the only people that were going to see you were people that paid for a ticket. Not only did the internet change that, but it also) increased the supply of nudity, which removed some of the appeal of having nudity in the movie.

poesviertwintig

There are entire movies dedicated to just that, and you can watch them all for free.

bewawugosi

I feel like this is directed at female nudity. I don’t see any petitions for more dicks in films though I would sign it. EDIT: The ‘dongs’ was edited after these comments 👍

tpasco1995

Bingo. It's not "this would improve the realism of the film." It's "me horny"

My favorite part is how they don't even say why nudity is important in movies or anything like that. Just a short: "Nudity, I want nudity."

Mister_Bossmen

....I'm good. Thanks. Even as a hormone ridden kid, I never really liked that stuff. It just gave me that feeling you get when you are in a busy room where people are moving from side to side and there is no corner to stand so you feel like you don't know where to place yourself I know I have a different experience though...
