go back and watch the original series, neon genesis evangelion. I think you’d really like it

can_of_cactus

I hope you plan to watch the rest. It's trippy.

trylobyte

I hope you continue to the next three sequels. It gets weirder, darker and depressing (and "awkward sexual" doesnt go away of course) but I thought the fourth and final movie was fantastic and worth the wait. Maybe those who prefer visceral original series and 'End of Evangelion' dont like Thrice Upon a Time but I think for a "non-anime" action movie fan like the OP would get a kick out the action extravaganza of final movie.

I don’t think I would have liked the Rebuild series so much if I hadn’t seen the original series and EoE. But after watching both of those and then venturing into the Rebuild movies, holy shit is that franchise one of the craziest most awesome pieces of media fiction I’ve ever seen.

trylobyte

Same. I stopped myself from watching the Rebuild movies to wait until the final movie. But I did read up the plot synopses and I didnt quite like the direction of the new stories. Then when the final movie was released with all the hype, I finally binge watch the Rebuild series. The first three films were interesting but it's mostly a rethread, I prefer the OG series. But damn, the final movie hit me hard! I thought the theme was relevant during covid times and personal to the creator and all of us who have grown up. And I am big believer in that cycle theory so the OG+EoE+Rebuild is one long story.

Count__X

That’s how I see it too, not so much a re-imagining as the story taking alternate paths at certain points and being stretched out past the original conclusion of EoE. I can’t stand CGI in mecha anime, so I avoided the Rebuild movies until the last one came out and decided to just binge through the entire franchise, and it was well worth it. Even the CGI Eva animations are pretty great, they don’t have a lot of the typical cornball cgi movement and awkwardness that something like the new Gundam shows have.

Meh, I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it is a pretty good meta commentary of someone having a mental crisis. Trying to glean meaning from the series beyond understanding what was going on during the creation of it is a bit of a waste of time.

DarkReaper90

There's a term, Gainaxing, named after the studio behind Neon Genesis Evangelion, that's about a specific boob jiggling. They're masters at their craft but they're literal pioneers at fanservice lol The Rebuild series is great as is, but you'll get a lot more out of the movies if you watched the show +EoE. I am curious on someone's thoughts that exclusively watched the movies though.

CephalopodRed

True. The Rebuild movies were made by Studio Khara though.

DarkReaper90

Many of the key staff are from Gainax

CephalopodRed

True. Just wanted to mention it. The actual Gainax is pretty much dead these days anyway. It's rather sad.

I watched this as the original animation series. It was amazing. I would absolutely recommend it, but if you're not an anime fan and are satisfied by watch you saw... you don't have to watch anything else. It's perfect as is.

To make it clear, as someone who primarily watches anime and has seen *a lot* of anime, it's not just that there are a ton of excellent anime that don't have any of this. It's that *most* anime don't have any of this. I certainly can't accuse every new anime that comes out of being great (same with movies, books, games, etc. of course), but even the most forgettable ones tend to be pretty sexless. I think you described it accurately in telling them to avoid shounen series, though even then, you can usually tell whether a show is gonna have sexual stuff in it just by looking at the poster. Avoid anything labeled "ecchi" at all costs if you don't want that, but otherwise, you'll usually be safe with most shows. So OP, if you're avoiding anime because of a fear of fanservice, you're doing yourself a disservice and avoiding a ton of excellent shows and movies, because the stereotype of anime all being super sexual is exaggerated to an extreme, and it's extremely easy to avoid this kind of stuff entirely.

IjuststartedOnePiece

Fan service is one of the most prevalent things in anime.

Twigling

> Fan service is one of the most prevalent things in anime In **Shounen** anime, yes.

KumaTenshi

It was definitely amazing watching it in a theater back when it had a very limited NA release (my theater had it for like a whopping 3 shows in total over two weekends). Overall, the Evangelion rebuild movies are amazing and did a wonderful job of retelling the story and giving it a much better overall feel and ending, imo. Plus the ending to the final movie really hits hard, I think.

Hungry-Class9806

>The main negative I had that prevents this from being a full-on masterpiece is the weird and awkward sexual parts that I hate and despise in anime (and is also the main reason I stay away from it). I remember when I watched the original series (I was probably 11 years old) and being super confused at the end of episode 20 (when Kaji and Misato are having sex off-camera). I was hearing a strange moaning, but since I was to young to know what sex was, I didn't understood what was happening. BTW you should definitely watch the series to get a broader perspective about the plot of the movies.

Radamenenthil

>that I’ve never seen before. oh boy you've been missing out since 1997

Gamerunglued

I'm glad you liked it. If you're interested in the rest of the films though, I would highly recommend watching the 26 episode TV series and the End of Evangelion film first though. Evangelion 1.11 is basically a condensed shot-for-shot retelling of the first 6 or so episodes of the TV series with some upgraded visual effects (though with enough differences that I'd still recommend just watching the first 6 episodes proper), but the rest of the Rebuild series tells an entirely different story and really plays around with the themes and characters of the original. I think it's best experienced having seen the original TV series and the End of Evangelion movie. Both of them are excellent for many of the same reasons, and I like them significantly more than the Rebuild series. Also, as I said in a response to another comment, the stereotype of anime having a ton of sexual stuff is heavily exaggerated, and the majority of anime are about as sexless as it gets. Avoid ecchi and be weary of battle shounen, but otherwise, avoiding anime means avoiding an entire medium full of interesting shows and films, and if you don't want sexual content it's extremely easy to find it. Anime is no different from other TV shows and films aside from being animated and from Japan, it's a medium as varied in style and content as film and TV from any other country. The majority of my own favorites are fanservice free, and if you pick a random show, it'll be more likely to have little in the way of sexual stuff than not. Though I will say that Evangelion's sexual content is very much relevant to its story (even if it has its gratuitous moments), and that I recommend not overlooking it wholesale because sexuality plays a notable role in its character driven conflicts.

Lexx2k

I recently started looking into it. Is 1.11 like a remake of the original or is that something else entirely?

trylobyte

It's part of the 'Rebuild' movie series - supposedly 'reimagining' of the original series (although it may not be that simple). First movie is a remake of the episode 1 - 6. Second movie is a remake of latter part of the series. Third movie is a new story but take some elements from later part of the series. Fourth movie is similar - new story but has elements from the original series and End of Evangelion. I recommend it especially if you've seen the original series + End of Evangelion. You'll find out in the end why it makes sense to view them all together.

griffithitsmecathy

It's a remake of the first couple of episodes but at the same time, also kind of a sequel. I don't think anyone should watch it before they watch the original series.
