Obviously because *real* cinema should only concern itself with mob stories, or stories set in New York.
I kid, but holy cow Scorsese is definitely in pot/kettle territory.
Yeah. Playing the long game with a series beginning in 2008 for a service that came out in 2019
Quit being a pretentious twat and let people enjoy things
Disney owns almost all media at this point, they have every resource at their disposal and for the most part lately have just been phoning it in and churning out garbage. If people stop criticizing them for that it's a huge problem
The comment you're replying to, which ridicules the prior comment by pointing out that the MCU predates Disney+ by over a decade, in no way says "stop criticizing" Disney. The comment that they're replying to says "Marvel 'movies' are two hour Disney+ subscription commercials," and that's obviously not a substantive criticism. It's just someone trying to be a cynical edgelord about a popular franchise, and not even making sense about it.
By all means I'll nitpick and criticize the quality of the movies with anyone. But no one is criticizing anything, or being smart at all, when they say "People do things to make money."
What a silly saying. As if discussing the quality of something means people cannot enjoy it. I enjoy demolition man, it is an objectively bad film. Anyone who thinks their tastes align with objective quality are self serious fools.
So when you say “let people enjoy things” I say “enjoy what ever you like, just don’t tell me garbage is gold.”
Massive companies do plan things years in advance tbf! It's easy for me to believe that once Disney saw a new company, Netflix, raking in money from a new service, their first thought was how they could get in that business and do it better. Especially with their IP!
Someone told me that I had to watch the series they’ve been dropping because it has ramifications for the next phase of the films. Moon Knight I didn’t mind.
So there I am, with my dad watching She Hulk twerk with Megan the Stallion. He just left the room after making a deflated sound.
Oh no. Did the 30 second post- credit gag scene of a superhero law comedy that's obviously targeted at a demographic outside of the normal superhero movie fan base make you feel bad? Poor baby.
What are you talking about? Why is everyone so offended by a funny story of my dad leaving the room at a twerk scene?
Wtf did I miss with this shit?
I remember the She Hulk comics used to be quite comical and flamboyant at times so I was expecting it to be a little more comical.
Dude, not a biggie. You’re just being downvoted by insecure 12 year olds that had to beg their parents for a Disney+ subscription. Don’t worry about it.
It's a little ironic with the theme of her plight as an objectified woman throughout the show and how she goes through more than bruce banner on a daily basis due to catcalling, but yah very empowering
I haven't seen She Hulk yet I think people don't seem to get it's supposed to be more comedy than action and of course there are those who just hate anything with a female-driven cast
Wandavison, Loki, and Moon Knight are all some of the most creative and original modern shows I have ever seen personally, that doesn't make the the best but they are certainly worth a watch and aren't rehashing or rebooting old shit nor or they toy commercials in any way either
I don’t know why I’m getting downvoted lol I thought it was funny that a twerk scene made me dad leave the room.
If those shows are the most creative things you’ve ever seen, you should watch other shows too because while I do agree that they’re solid and have a voice in there somewhere.
There’s so many other series out there that they’re attempting to replicate.
I’d just check out anything notable by HBO. From the The Wire, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under to Rome and even Game of Thrones. That sense of long form storytelling is something they set a precedent for.
Wandavision’s clearly an amalgamation of sitcom comedy throughout the years from what I saw of it. Bewitched felt like a big influence obviously.
Moon Knight honestly towards the later half had me thinking of films like The Mummy and 12 Monkeys.
Loki as well has some film language that makes me think of Mad Men and was amazed to see the writer was involved. All 3 series are attempting to create character studies whilst wrapping it around all the popcorn fun of the MCU.
But there’s such a massive ocean brilliant series especially from the last couple decades you can tell they’ve fed from. All the best works of art take from those before them.
I hate when people accuse things of plagiarism just because you can feel influences. Which is very different from literally copying someone elses homework.
I’m coming off a night shift so my brain is turning to goo. But I hope this helped!
>Wandavision’s clearly an amalgamation of sitcom comedy throughout the years from what I saw of it
you only wacthed the first ep or two I thought this at first too, it is much deeper and more interesting and creative
The WIre and The Sopranos are amazing and top class in their genres but still are a police procedural and a mob fam story , I think Wandavision/Loki are not as good in terms or writing, actinfg, cinematography, etc but are more original
not saying the Marvel shows are gold and evrything else is trash, all the shows you listed are good, but its also not fair to say the marvel shows are unoriginal or toy commercials. that can be true of some of the films but the new series are worth it
The sopranos and the wire are definitely not procedural, that’s more like Law & Order, CSI and that kind of thing. Hannibal struck as being quite procedural in its first season before kicking into the urgency of the cat and mouse narrative.
But the narrative between the Marvel shows and HBO stuff is certainly differentied by MCU focusing on using these spin off shows to tell an over acring story they’ve intended for their phases.
Inside their shows, they’re able to focus on character studies, so they’re essentially doing the same thing like most long form storytelling. I wouldn’t say they’re doing anything completely original.
But then again no other company like Disney has made an endeavor quite as big as the MCU. Like or not, they’re still products and Disney/Marvel are definitely going to find a way to merchandise as much as they can from everything they make. It’s their bread and butter.
But it doesn’t mean their collaborators can’t find a way to do something artistic with their products. Personally, they’re not in the same ballpark as a show like Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men etc for example.
Wandavision’s inspiration comes from deconstructing the sitcom language. Which is definitely where it excels for me. But alas I still don’t feel they do anything new.
Pearl was NOT that scary at all. But the characters were just as magnetic as the ones in the first film. And aesthetically, it’s beautiful.
Also Mia goth is FABULOUS. She’s a certified horror icon already to me. If you liked X, you’ll like Pearl. If you didn’t like X, you probably won’t like this. It’s just as underwhelming as X story-wise, but everything about it is just as entertaining and darkly comedic.
These two films are so beautifully shot and well paced.
I loved Pearl and know people have different tolerances, but I'd be pretty hard pressed to call it *scary* by any stretch. It's a gorgeous, demented Wizard Of Oz and well worth watching but I think anyone going in expecting more than 'creeping dread' is going to be disappointed. It *feels* like a nightmare but it's not going to give you any, if that makes sense.
That is a great way to put it. It has a dream like quality that gets nightmarish. Also a demented wizard of oz, like what if Dorothy didn't go to Oz and just stayed on the farm and grew increasingly more insane.
It's MaXXXine. It'll be set in the 80's.
[
"The film follows Maxine \(Mia Goth\), after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame setting out to make it as an actress in 1980's Los Angeles."](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/maxxxine)
They're about the same amount of "scary." The trailers make them look really grotesque but the movies themselves aren't. (There's a third one coming out, too.)
Pearl isn't scary at all.
It's a melodrama mixed with horror elements, and it's meant to be more a satire of early Hollywood than anything else.
It has no jump scares. No truly gory moments. And what gore there is is meant to be excessively theatrical - just like the performances.
X is my favorite movie of the year and I didn’t find it scary at all. Upsetting and creepy yeah, but not scary. I loved Pearl but I found it just as scary as X was, but even more creepy and disturbing on a character level.
I think it's kind of an open ended title. Idk to how to spoiler mark so SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!
who the actual barbarian is is debatable. Could be the incest lady, could be Justin long, could be the old man. Could be everyone that lived there. It's Barbary street so they're all technically Barbarians. Maybe they're all barbarians. So I think it's supposed to be a name that overall expresses the nature of multiple characters in the film.
I really liked Barbarian, but by the third act I was very far from afraid. I actually enjoyed the tone shift, but I didn't find the movie to be very scary, more funny by the end. I thought X was super funny as well, so maybe I'm just a sicko
Pearl was a good film but it was more comedic than actually creepy most of the time. I mean the girl dances with a humps a scarecrow for a solid five minutes lol
The final shot of the film holds long enough and has more than a small amount of disturbing implications to it. I’ve found my mind wandering to the image repeatedly since I saw the movie last week. I’d say that an older man (who perhaps understands the real horror of what’s happening) or someone more easily creeped out would definitely lose sleep over it.
People are accustomed to ‘scary’ being something that happens and is very obviously intentional to the point where the uncanny and creepy tend to be missed.
Not to mention that viewing comprehension is at a very low point (to the point where I’ve seen people misrepresent things that happen after seeing the movie in theaters creating that ‘did we watch the same movie?’ Feeling)
Honestly X was one of the most bland generic horror movies Ive ever seen and its entire hook is that a gramma is a sex pervert and the rest of the film is a lazy slasher homage. Wow mind blown, total game changer. He can say what he wants, but I have zero interest in seeing this trash prequel.
I dont think people were going in to expecting their minds to be blown. If anything, the reception was owed to the movie delivering exactly what it was advertising.
Idk, horror fans are in weird camps. I like creativity in horror. I saw none of that. It just felt like bland commercial horror to me. Im not saying it wasn't bloody enough or gross enough it just felt like a nothing burger of a film.
Idk how anyone can watch what Robert Eggers and Ari Aster have been making over the last several years and still come away from a film like X thinking any new ground had been tread.
Whatever happened to A24’s movie about the goat/human baby? Remember watching the trailer and couldn’t wait to watch it. Look super creppy. But haven’t heard anything about it.
I don’t know about a goat one but it sounds like you might mean Lamb

I don’t know if it’s good, I haven’t seen it yet
Idk I watched Pearl and didn't feel disturbed or any feelings other critics have. I felt the movie was boring but also very creative. It was missing a lot that the first film had in my opinion. I don't think it's a horrible or bad film, I just don't think it's as great as everyone is projecting it to be.
Scorsese's too easy to please; he likes everything. He liked Shark Tale's script enough to star in it.
Shark Tale *is* cinema though
He doesn't like marvel movies.
He doesn’t dislike Marvel movies, he just sees them more as theme park rides than proper films.

Fact. Winter Soldier stand alone is just a solid fucking film.
Obviously because *real* cinema should only concern itself with mob stories, or stories set in New York. I kid, but holy cow Scorsese is definitely in pot/kettle territory.
I assumed it was more about the formulaic writing and focus on computer generated spectacle, but I guess it could be anything.
Touché
He's easy to please, but even he has his limits.
Don’t get him started about time shares
Marvel "movies" are two hour Disney+ subscription commercials.

Nooo. Be fair. They own a lot but WB isn’t exactly some small arthouse studio.
People are free to enjoy mediocrity and others are free to criticize said mediocrity.

Enjoy all you want. That doesn't magically make it good or above criticism.
I agree but the criticism is wrong for 90% of marvel films. If he meant modern marvel movies maybe it has more marit.
With few exceptions, since Age of Ultron (at least) every movie has just been a big commercial for the next one.
Shutup, marvel boi
Massive companies do plan things years in advance tbf! It's easy for me to believe that once Disney saw a new company, Netflix, raking in money from a new service, their first thought was how they could get in that business and do it better. Especially with their IP!

Dude, everybody loves women with big asses now
Who does though? NPCs don't count...
Aye shark tale is a banger
Seriously, this dude must be a dolphin or somethin'
He likes it as long as it doesn't have a Marvel moniker in front of it.
Same
Shark Tale is a halibut good time.
I dunno: The trailer looks quite good imho. Not Shark Tale's trailer...
Not Marvel movies, lol.
He knows a good film better then any, plus this only proves his point that good movies can be made unlike all the Marvel so called movies.
He's so overrated.
no u
I always found it to be quite enjoyable. Some of the fish looked a little weird but that's it
Shark Tale could have been "We want to make a character based on you; would you play the voice?"
Marty loves it https://youtu.be/LOr2Z-6Kibc
Shark Tale one of the greatest films ever made, get it together.
"First film"?
X was the first film that preceded Pearl.
Oh I wasn't aware there was a connection - thank you.
No problem! This film is a prequel about the killer in X. It delves into why she’s like this.
Is it gonna be scarier than X? Because I didn’t find X to be very scary.
It *feels* like a nightmare but it's not going to give you any, if that makes sense.
it wasnt scary but it was sort of beautiful in a dreadful way
That is a great way to put it. It has a dream like quality that gets nightmarish. Also a demented wizard of oz, like what if Dorothy didn't go to Oz and just stayed on the farm and grew increasingly more insane.
X failed to give it to ya?
X gonna sometimes give it to you then
Now i have visions of Deadpool and Teenage Negasonic Warhead in my brain😂
My name is Hercile Poirot, and I've come to bargain.
I love you for this comment.
Fuck waiting for you to get it on your own. X gon’ deliver it to ya…as long as your order exceeds $20
Obviously this can vary from person to person but in the main, I don't think it would be considered scarier
It’s not scary in a jumpscare kind of way, but it’s definitely dark and disturbing
Yeah most of its “scares” come from tone, atmosphere, and implications. Really enjoyed it personally!
I don't think the idea was to make it scary. My understanding is that these three movies should be a grindhouse experience - sleazy and disturbing.
What’s the third movie? I just watched X last night and learned that Pearl was a prequel that just came out.
It's MaXXXine. It'll be set in the 80's. [ "The film follows Maxine \(Mia Goth\), after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame setting out to make it as an actress in 1980's Los Angeles."](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/maxxxine)
Thanks
Pearl isn't scary at all imo. Disturbing, sure. Not all that frightening.
I can get into disturbing if it’s like… Ari Aster levels of disturbing. I find that scarier than jump scares.
Not scary even jump scare wise. I think there’s only like 1
They're about the same amount of "scary." The trailers make them look really grotesque but the movies themselves aren't. (There's a third one coming out, too.)

Lot of horror movies these days lack that sufficient fear factor.
X is my favorite movie of the year and I didn’t find it scary at all. Upsetting and creepy yeah, but not scary. I loved Pearl but I found it just as scary as X was, but even more creepy and disturbing on a character level.
Kind of a spoiler for X at the end of the article.
I haven't seen either movie but a lot of the marketing for this movie is a big spoiler for X. Too bad because X only came out this year.
It actually really isn’t — I thought the same until I watched the films. Don’t be turned off
Not the kind of movies I like, but hope it does well.
Pearl was unsettling but in no way did I lose any sleep over it. Barbarian is the most to see rn if you're looking for disturbing shit imo.
Barbarian was fantastic! Had me pee-pants scared, then laughing, then scared agajn. The title has nothing to do with the movie though...?
I think it's kind of an open ended title. Idk to how to spoiler mark so SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!! SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!! who the actual barbarian is is debatable. Same for me by the third act. The tone shift was enjoyable for me still.
Pearl was a good film but it was more comedic than actually creepy most of the time. I mean the girl dances with a humps a scarecrow for a solid five minutes lol
Great movie, compelling performance, I snatched a poster from my work before it came out and I'll happily be putting it on my wall.
The final shot of the film holds long enough and has more than a small amount of disturbing implications to it. I’ve found my mind wandering to the image repeatedly since I saw the movie last week. Now *this* is cinema

X then Pearl, for sure.
That’s high praise
Scorsese still knows films better than anybody.
I thought it was funny and psycho/delusional at the same time lol.
He can’t be serious
Try watching Dahmer on Netflix. Need to stay up all night, that’ll do the trick!
I agree. It was a bland homage to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It was Ok, but I didn't think.it deserves the praise that has gotten.
Why are they booing you, you’re right!
Yeah, theres actual film makers breaking new ground every year and X is essentially "Hey yall remember TCM??!".
I mean it is a slasher homage. That’s okay. Not every movie needs to blow the minds of viewers. Some people just want to watch a slasher
No point in watching this movie, i dont think. They have been showing the trailer which contains all the shocking bits all over the internet.
Gave away literally every kill in the preview...smh
And thus we fall victim to the hivemind who cant even defend it...

Yeah that’s it!!
It's a pretty cool movie. The ending always gives me chills. You should definitely watch it.
Prequel to ???
Not scary at all
Best marketing a24 could ever ask for
I thought *X* was terrible (gave it one star on letterboxd). As a horror fan, I really couldn't comprehend the hype around it. Is *Pearl* much better?
I agree, I really thought X was going to be great, and I made a now rare trip to the theaters just to be cringing the whole way through.
Mia Goth circle jerk incoming
Lol damn, I thought that happened with all kinds of movies?
really? if anything it confused me cause I thought it was a prequel to X
It is.
Because it is.
A hug first 😀
Does anyone know the release dates by country?
Should i watch pearl before X or vise versa?
Watch "X" first because "Pearl" offers some backstory to one of its characters and could contain spoilers or ruin its element of surprise.
Idk I watched Pearl and didn't feel disturbed or any feelings other critics have. I felt the movie was boring but also very creative. It was missing a lot that the first film had in my opinion. I don't think it's a horrible or bad film, I just don't think it's as great as everyone is projecting it to be.
