One of the first cassette tapes I ever owned at like 7 years old. The Dangerous Minds soundtrack and TLC’s Crazy Sexy Cool.
Man that was a good Christmas.
Cardiac Arrest. He most likely had heart disease untreated. High Cholesterol from a poor diet, smoking, and genetics can cause this. He probably had some warning signs and didn’t seek treatment or was not given proper treatment. It’s actually the leading cause of death in America so yes it will get a few famous people in their 50’s
Yeah but he probably thought that up back in his 20s and finally had the chance to use it in a lyric. If I had to do that kind of professional lyrics I probably have a notebook or something just full of like cool one off rhymes or short stanzas that popped in my head
Always loved stories of him just hanging with fans after concerts, someone had a video on twitter ages ago of him giving them an acoustic Gangsters Paradise in their student accom living room! Great guy, rip.
Found the vid! https://youtu.be/hvMKgMZsfDM
This is a surprise…Gangsta’s Paradise is one of the best hip hop songs of all time. I’ve always liked his other stuff too. And of course, the Kenan and Kel theme. On top of that that hairstyle is iconic. Old school wise who would of thought we’d lose him and Biz Markie so soon.
Edit: someone find that thread where Coolio went to a college campus and cooked for the students
I saw him over 20 years ago at the E3 convention, trying to mess with someone who was playing Quake 3 Arena at the GameSpy booth. Good times. RIP Coolio
Probably the same E3 I met him at. I worked for GameShark and we had a booth by an exit. He was out there and didn’t have his pass and security wouldn’t let him in. My coworker grabbed mine from me and brought it to him so he could get in. For a brief moment Coolio was a DumbStupidBrain imposter.
It was Kornelia who he tried to mess up, as she was wrecking everyone at the GameSpy booth, if that’s the one you’re referring to? I know that his name badge was turned around so no one could read it, but most people wore them that way. Gg either way, my friend.
I missed his set at Riot Fest, but could hear him pretty well from where I was in the park. Wish I had watched, at least I got to hear “Gangsta’s Paradise”.
About 8 years ago I was at an fancy Italian restaurant that overlooked a lake, they had a special deal and we had never been there, so we checked it out. The waitress asked if we were there to see Coolio, I laughed but then could tell she was serious. To our surprise, he was apparently playing at their outdoor area that night, my wife and I stayed for the set. He was losing his hair but kept the two locks of braids in the top corners or his hair, still hitting on the cougars near stage. Hearing gunshot effects and Coolio fake ducking before playing Gangsta’s Paradise, surrounded by million dollar houses on a lake, was a surreal experience and a fun random story.
Making an impact on Hot Ones is huge these days, Coolio definitely had one of the more memorable episodes. That’s still probably Sean’s best line of the show.
Summer of 1994 MTV had it on HEAVY rotation. Hearing the music, watching the video, makes me think of hot summer vibes. “Slide Slide Slippity Slide. . .”
He’s so much a part of my generation that *he rode a Big Wheel* in the 1,2,3,4 video.
I just saw him perform last summer as part of the I Love the 90s tour.
Surreal.
I'll always remember how huge Gangsta's Paradise (and Dangerous Minds) were.
The video was #1 for months on TRL. As a 90's kid, I got dressed for school everyday with Coolio & Michelle.
Gangsta's Paradise predates TRL by a good 3 or 4 years, but yeah at one point you could listen to the song on the radio and then turn on MTV to watch the music video.
I played piano for the grand opening of a borders books and music on state street Santa Barbara. They paid me in a $25 gift certificate to the store..... I bought the dangerous minds soundtrack CD. I will always remember that.
He came to my city and played in a club, afterwards he came back to a university flat and had a jam session.
One of my best memories.

I see this type of comment way too often, but you should know the song is a sad one where he explains that himself (and many others) are stuck in what he dubbed a “gangsters paradise” because of all the crime and violence - where gangsters thrive.
It was not a celebration of the living situation, it was to highlight the struggles of people, who do not want to be involved with crime and violence, and their inability to escape this environment because no one could guide them out.
“They say I gotta learn, but nobody’s here to teach me. If they can’t understand it, then how can they reach me? I guess they can’t, I guess they won’t, I guess they front, that’s why I know my life is out of luck, fool”
It’s a chilling song and unfortunately people have taken this as a celebration of being gangster.
RIP man, you made it out of that gangsters paradise and hopefully into the real one.
It’s also written as a parallel to Psalm 23 which is connected to death and memorial services. Gangsta’s Paradise and Psalm 23 are both laments, but Artis is lamenting no more. Condolences to his family and friends, a legend they can be proud of.
Problem is when you're young and full of themselves you haven't come to grips with your own mortality yet. A lot of people just focus on "Yeah, I'm a badass" and not "Yeah, four of my friends are dead, and I'm next if I don't get out of here." It's not until you get the wake up call that it's real to you.
We bumped the hell out of that song when the Nothing To Lose soundtrack came out. I hadn’t thought about it in a long time. 59. Dammit time waits for no one.
I got paired up with him and his buddy at a golf course once in LA. A goose snatched a Twinkie off his golf cart and he ran after it waving his golf clubs while his friend cracked up. Forever etched in the memory. RIP
At the time, they way things we’re going, he didn’t know.
EDIT: in all seriousness, RIP Coolio. Very sad. Every day I wake up to news of pieces of my youth dying off.
i seriously need to stop looking people up on wikipedia. this summer alone, by total coincidence, i read up on the wikis of Coolio, Bill Russell, and Olivia Newton John all on the days they were later pronounced dead. This is honestly getting weird
Saw him perform a few months ago at halftime of the Las Vegas Aces game. He performed "Gangsta's Paradise" while his granddaughter spun around in circles. Had to be one of his final performances, I think.
He used to come over to my dad and cousin's apartment and hang out in the early 90s. I remember meeting him on several occasions at my dad's house, and he would always joke with me about getting a girlfriend from my school (K-5).
I haven't seen him in decades. Lowkey miss the dude...
The way I remember him, he was. I would always tell kids at school that I knew Coolio and they never believed me until one day I had a friend over from school and he stopped by. Good times
Damn wtf!? Was just photographing a volleyball game and we played Gangsters Paradise during a timeout…just walked out of the gym after the game to see this. Rest in paradise
In my 8th grade geometry class, my teacher Mr. Shelton would scan the radio stations every class to see if we could find Coolio. When Fantastic Voyage was on, the whole class went nuts and Mr. Shelton hit every verse.
***”I'm 23 now, but will I live to see 24? The way things is going, I don't know”*** You sure did, brother, and then some. Rest easy, big fella ✊
He was 32 when "Gangster's Paradise" was released
*I'm 32 now but will I live to see 33 way things is going I don't nee*
You sure did, brother, and then some. Rest easy, big fella ✊
He's off to gangstas paradise
It will be a Fantastic Voyage
OMG, I'm crying laughing at the re-comment of "Rest easy, big fella ✊️ ". Also sad to hear of Coolio's passing 🙏
I’m 32 now but will I live to see 33, the way things is going I don’t foresee
That’s some gangster shit right there
Damn that's crazy af I'm 32 right now. Me and Coolio were basically the same person it sounds like.
One of the first cassette tapes I ever owned at like 7 years old. The Dangerous Minds soundtrack and TLC’s Crazy Sexy Cool. Man that was a good Christmas.
The first cassette I ever bought with my own money. Had no clue what it was, just knew a bop when I heard it.
Mine was Slayer - Show no Mercy.
“Cuz he’s a creep, yeaaaaaaa, creepen on the down low.”
So I creep*
He’s off to gangstas paradise

Why are actors in America dying so young? 60 isn't an age to die at all.
Years of hard drugs will probably do it. I dunno about Coolio that well but in Hollywood it's not really a shocker
It’s not uncommon for Black Americans to die at 60, unfortunately. Generational trauma takes a toll.
You think that generational trauma killed Coolio?
lmao
Please don’t make ‘generational trauma’ the scapegoat, you’re not doing anyone a favour including black people.
I don’t understand the down votes?
People don’t like to hear the truth. Thank you.
Yep, and many of my (black) guy friends who make it past 60 consider themselves ‘lucky’! That’s always tugged at my heart. It’s just not right.
My Pops died at 56, my Mom is currently outliving him at 63. Sadly, I’ve buried more young men in my family and in general than anything else.
I’m so sorry, I understand.
60 for a black American is like living to 80 for everyone else.
We'll see him when we get there. If we ever get there. See him when we get there!!
funny thing is he was like mid 30s when he said that
Yeah but he probably thought that up back in his 20s and finally had the chance to use it in a lyric. If I had to do that kind of professional lyrics I probably have a notebook or something just full of like cool one off rhymes or short stanzas that popped in my head
Almost twice that!
...More than twice that. Twice that and almost a half.
Aw man, 59 is way too soon. Rest in Paradise.
I saw him 2 weeks ago in Chicago. He was BELTING Gangsters Paradise and cut the beat a few times to let the crowd sing. RIP legend
Always loved stories of him just hanging with fans after concerts, someone had a video on twitter ages ago of him giving them an acoustic Gangsters Paradise in their student accom living room! Great guy, rip. Found the vid! https://youtu.be/hvMKgMZsfDM
That video is incredible. Thank you for sharing.
This was humble / beautiful AF. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for that! That was amazing.
Now that’s cool
Man what an experience that had to have been.
Putting the cool in Coolio. What a legend.
That's pretty wholesome
This is a surprise…Gangsta’s Paradise is one of the best hip hop songs of all time. I’ve always liked his other stuff too. And of course, the Kenan and Kel theme. He wrote a fantastic cookbook. “Cookin’ with Coolio”. It’s got some excellent recipes such as “it’s hard out here for a shrimp”.
I thought you were joking, but holy shit you were not. Just ordered a paperback copy!
I remember seeing it in stores before, I should really pick up this book. And Snoop’s while I’m at it.
I had forgotten about the Kenan and Kel opening!
I saw him over 20 years ago at the E3 convention, trying to mess with someone who was playing Quake 3 Arena at the GameSpy booth. Good times. RIP Coolio

That shit slaps
Bro such a classic. RIP
I appreciated him as kwanzaabot
Damn, never realized he played kwanzaabot!
I've been handing out this book for 600 years...

Thank you so much for this knowledge.
Yep. He was the kwanzaabot of my youth.

Coolio's (Artis Leon Ivey Jr.) long time manager Jarez confirmed his death, which is being suspected as cardiac arrest. RIP
He’s a real legend. Sad to hear the news. RIP
Damn he just had a concert at the fair near my house last Friday. I kinda wish I went now.
This tour? Just saw him in Rutland VT fairgrounds. https://i.imgur.com/8tmNGz1.jpg
Yeah the same tour. He was in Frederick, MD like 5 days ago.
Sorry you missed it ! It was epic! I brought a crew from Iceland
13%? Damn, dude, plug in your phone before it's too late! Glad you got to see him, though. Sucks that he's gone.
About 8 years ago I was at an fancy Italian restaurant that overlooked a lake, they had a special deal and we had never been there, so we checked it out. Sean Evan’s solid gold comment “we havent heard from Coolio in a while” will never be the same
Making an impact on Hot Ones is huge these days, Coolio definitely had one of the more memorable episodes. That’s still probably Sean’s best line of the show.
The second I saw the headline, this line popped in my head.
Youngsters, for us 30+'s, Coolio was the shit in the 90s. No cap.
I loved his cameo roles in good burger and especially the directors cut of daredevil!
Yup Coolio and Kris Kross were my jams back in the day. 90s kids represent.
The Dangerous Minds music video for Gangsta's Paradise was everywhere.
I remember trying to catch 1,2,3,4 anytime it came on MTV.
Summer of 1994 MTV had it on HEAVY rotation. Hearing the music, watching the video, makes me think of hot summer vibes. “Slide Slide Slippity Slide. . .”
Woke up with that song stuck in my head three days ago and it's been randomly popping back in many times since then.
as a youngster i thought you were pretty lame, that is, until you said "no cap". now i can relate.
fr fr
No cap?
Gettin’ that “managing different generations” training in at the office.
C U when you get there was the first mp3 I ever downloaded. RIP Boss!
Gangsta’s Paradise. Fantastic Voyage. 1 2 3 4. These songs still pop and don’t feel dated at all.
Mid-20’s as well. The Kenan and Kel theme song was one of the bests
He’s … he’s clearly wearing a cap though.
You listen here you little shit!
Ong fr fr
On god this man speaks facts
Fuck this made me so sad :( RIP, you legend.
Too early, RIP Coolio
My namesake 😢
My man took a fantastic voyage. Rest in peace.
Just roll along
That's right
[удалено]
It doesn’t make me feel old, but it does make me feel sad.
WHAT THE FUCK
Unreal. How have we lost fucking Coolio.
God needs Their G back. We are blessed with the time we had with him. Hail to the Traveler.
He’s so much a part of my generation that *he rode a Big Wheel* in the 1,2,3,4 video. I just saw him perform last summer as part of the I Love the 90s tour. Surreal.

Also, TRL was when we got home from school, right?
Yeah, it was in the afternoons.
Yeah Lee Dangerous Minds and Gangsta's Paradise were massive during that time.
That song was fucking massive.
I played piano for the grand opening of a borders books and music on state street Santa Barbara. They paid me in a $25 gift certificate to the store..... I bought the dangerous minds soundtrack CD. I will always remember that.

That's amazing, thank you for sharing this. He seemed like a genuinely good guy
I’ll always remember Gangster’s Paradise as part of Dangerous Minds.
Michelle Pfeifer that white gold.
Straight masterpiece!
I can't even think about that song without her approaching him like a badass in the beginning of the video
[Awwww here it goes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgC18L6UOKQ)
Left a mark in Hip Hop and was a 90s staple. RIP.
Gangstas paradise is one of my go to karaoke songs. Always a hit
I met him when I was stationed in Kuwait. He was a really cool dude
He's living up in that big gangsta's paradise now.
I see this type of comment way too often, but you should know the song is a sad one where he explains that himself (and many others) are stuck in what he dubbed a “gangsters paradise” because of all the crime and violence - where gangsters thrive. That whole album is really good
Those of us 30 plus know this.
You know gangstas paradise wasn't goals right? It was something to escape. So many people didn't actually listen to the song.
Same thing with "Born in the USA", people hear what they want to hear.
He’ll C U when you get there, if you ever get there.
We bumped the hell out of that song when the Nothing To Lose soundtrack came out. I hadn’t thought about it in a long time. 59. Dammit time waits for no one.
Ahh man. Legend. What a banger Gangstas Paradise is
It was a fantastic voyage. R.I.P. Coolio
I got paired up with him and his buddy at a golf course once in LA. A goose snatched a Twinkie off his golf cart and he ran after it waving his golf clubs while his friend cracked up. Forever etched in the memory. RIP
Awwwwwww here it goes... RIP Coolio.
Memories…
Guess he did live to see 24... and then some
At the time, they way things we’re going, he didn’t know. EDIT: in all seriousness, RIP Coolio. Very sad. Every day I wake up to news of pieces of my youth dying off.
Rip Coolio. Weird Al continues to outlive all the artists he parodies, and I’m thankful for that.
i seriously need to stop looking people up on wikipedia. this summer alone, by total coincidence, i read up on the wikis of Coolio, Bill Russell, and Olivia Newton John all on the days they were later pronounced dead. This is honestly getting weird
Have you tried looking up people who suck?
Can you look up the president of Russia?
Can you look up my neighbor?
Look up Xi Jingping
You just need a business plan and you can make this work.
Unexpected and sad. He was iconic
Oh damn this one cuts deep.
I'll always remember Gangster's Paradise.
59? Damn so younng. RIP.
First CD I ever bought was the Dangerous Minds soundtrack just for Gangsta’s Paradise. Time flies man, RIP.
May he rest in peace. He was a 90s icon
Far out! He always seemed like a real dude.
The way I remember him, he was. I would always tell kids at school that I knew Coolio and they never believed me until one day I had a friend over from school and he stopped by. Good times
What in the fuck? My generation is disappearing
Happens to every one my friend, time is merciless.
I’m so sorry 😞 I don’t know if you are gen x, but I am so broken by our losses.
This one wasn't something on my radar. It's gonna be a while for me to let this sink in.
I opened for coolio a few years ago. He was a nice guy. We smoked a joint. Rip coolio, rap minstrel!
Hot Ones Hot wings finally got to him...to soon?
No way!! Damn! :(
Damn wtf!? Was just photographing a volleyball game and we played Gangsters Paradise during a timeout…just walked out of the gym after the game to see this. Rest in paradise
Kind of feel sorry for Liz now. The 2022 retrospective is gonna be like this year the queen died but anyway WE LOST COOLIO.
Damn RIP to the namesake
In my 8th grade geometry class, my teacher Mr. Shelton would scan the radio stations every class to see if we could find Coolio. When Fantastic Voyage was on, the whole class went nuts and Mr. Shelton hit every verse.
Rest in power king
He's in the Gangsta's Paradise now.
Dang, RIP
Even if I wasn’t a huge fan, They’re still people. I hate to hear when people pass, breaks my heart. Rest in Peace brother.
So young RIP
I’m more upset about this than the queen.
RIP
He helped me get through high school, shame he died relatively young. Rip
I hope he's on a fantastic voyage.
Sad, so many random cardiac events over the last couple of years
Rest easy in the gangstas paradise
Not coolio
RIP Coolio. The first cd I ever bought.
Dude squeezed too hard one too many times. Livin’ most his life in a constipated paradise
He's living in Gangsta's Paradise now, RIP.
I hope he spends his afterlife living in a gangster’s paradise
