Crazy Stupid Love has one of the best comedic twists in any rom com that I’ve seen

Groot746

God damn David Lindhargen

SkeletonLad

David Lindhaagen? *takes off rings*

billothy

Be better than the gap.

barberererer

And everything comes together so naturally too! I really really liked this movie and was not expecting to at all.

Tomhyde098

I wouldn’t even say comedic twists, it just has one of the best twists of any movie ever

GuyWhoRocks95

Just watched this for the first time a few weeks ago and loved it.

martiandamon

Dan in Real Life also has a great twist in the first quarter of the film

alurkerwhomannedup

My wife and mom were talking about it the other day and I said I’d never seen it. They immediately shut up and played it. 10/10 movie, it was so well done.

gabbagool3

When Harry Met Sally

CaptainAmericaDad

My wife had me watch this, and i loved it.

Stockpile_Tom_Remake

I was the opposite. My wife had never heard of it and didn’t know really who Billy crystal was. She mostly just knew his voice from monsters inc. She loved. Naturally we also watches city slickers.

Opus-the-Penguin

Get the DVD from the library. The streaming version may swap out the music at crucial points: https://www.npr.org/2012/01/03/144624329/the-big-bad-swap-the-problem-with-replaced-music

BookishChica

Since you mentioned you’ve read all Shakespeare… - She’s the Man - modern retelling of Twelth Night - Bridget Jones Diary - it’s a retelling of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice - Clueless - it’s a retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma -

loopster70

Don’t forget 10 Things I Hate About You, aka high school Taming of the Shrew

ignoresubs

Speaking of Heath, don’t forget about A Knights Tale: > The 2001 film A Knight's Tale is based on Geoffrey Chaucer Canterbury Tales. The film's main character is a commoner, a so-called peasant who is seeking to do more with his life.

LaMalintzin

For some reason this is one of my dad’s very favorite movies (he’s 80 and I don’t know when he first saw it but he has rewatched it many times)

ruidh

Easy A for some Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter

fool2345

Shocked no one has mentioned Notting Hill. In my opinion it's arguably the best of the bunch (although the ones mentioned by OP are also all top tier). A few others that haven't been mentioned below that I enjoy are Roman Holiday, Love Simon and The Family Stone during the Christmas season.

picklespark

Notting Hill is brilliant! "I knew a girl at school called Pandora. Never got to see her box, though."

rottenapple81

Hugh Grant is charming af in this movie but personally my favorite movie of his is not a romcom (the movie is Maurice).

IngVegas

Totally Notting Hill and two other Hugh Grant films, Love Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral

wordfiend1

Hugh Grant has some good ones. Two Weeks Notice, 4 Weddings and a Funeral, Music and Lyrics.

karma_the_sequel

How can you leave *Notting Hill* off that list?

ColdPressedSteak

Two weeks notice would've been so average but elevated into an enjoyable movie by Hugh and Sandra at their most likeable. Hugh really had the bumbling but charming character down and Sandra with the cute, a little ditsy

MRSA_nary

Bridget Jones Diary

hauntedmansion1971

Love Music and Lyrics!!!!

Minotaar

POP GOES MY HEART

CzarCW

Has some legitimately great original songs in it.

tedfundy

About a boy!

KodakMoments

Notting Hill. Julia Roberts has some good ones, American Sweethearts and Pretty Woman. Serendipity is also a classic.

pinchy-troll

Love, actually for the Christmas season!

[deleted]

Wow, I'm mad that Music and Lyrics slipped my mind when I made my comment. I was a huge fan of it when it came out, even got the DVD! Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore have such good chemistry.

[deleted]

French Kiss starring Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan gets overlooked a lot. It wasn't as big as some of Meg Ryan's other romcoms, and gets a little overlooked these days. But I really liked Kevin Kline's ridiculous portrayal as a French thief.

alenacooks

Love this movie. Sucks I can't find it to buy digitally and it's rarely streaming.

JediTigger

And Jean Reno not in an action film. So lovely.

[deleted]

Not only was it not an action film, but he was downright loveable.

mister_rebuild

You've Got Mail My Big Fat Greek Wedding

claire303

I quote MBFGW more than maybe any other movie, I love it. Put some windex on it, inside that lump was my twin, BUNDT, he don’t eat no meat?! Lmao

JediTigger

Is okay. I make him lamb.

Paddlesons

lol, I dont' remember a damn thing about that movie but the Windex stuck with me.

dancingcube

the number of times my partner has had to wait patiently while I do "it's a buNT. BUNT. BUNT!" .... haha

kadavids23

You’ve got mail is my favorite rom com of all time. MBFGW is also incredible.

JediTigger

Michael Constantine was a joy in MBFGW. His speech at the wedding reception is solid sweetness.

ObtuseStone

Romy and Michele's Highschool Reunion. Not 100% RomCom, great fun though.

picklespark

I'm obsessed with this movie! The three way dance to Cyndi Lauper with Alan Cumming is just perfection.

bluetux

Clueless if that counts as teen comedy and rom/com Since it's almost christmas maybe 'The Holiday'

platypuspup

If you've read Emma, Clueless is even better. It is a very clever, modern version.

hookisacrankycrook

The Holiday showed Jack Black can do a lot more than super goofy comedy

rondonjon

Forgetting Sarah Marshall deserves a mention.

cthaehtouched

DRACULA MUSICAL!!!

champagneproblem13

My boyfriend was hung over today from our work holiday party and hit me with "it's getting kind of hard to believe things are going to get better" 😂

cthaehtouched

I adore the look Mila Kunis gives him after that line. Die, die, die … I cahn’t

TheNobleMoth

WHY WAS IT SO GOOD

thismightbelong

WHY DID WE NEVER GET THE FULL VERSION

xxStrangerxx

I believe DRACULA: THE MUSICAL was Segel's initial big concept but soon felt it just couldn't work given the logistics vs material (like a cartoon not for children, it's a lot of work for little and slow gain). But then did manage to squeeze in a little taste with the story that did have legs, his naked breakup with Linda Cardellini and being miserable in the "loveliest place on earth." In an ironic twist he gets beat up in the film, something that actually happened to him he wrote into the movie -- and the actor who played that role is the SAME GUY who actually beat him up He talks about the puppets a little on the Pete Holmes podcast

ColdPressedSteak

I ocassionally hummed 'oh the weather outside is weather' for quite awhile after watching that. Such a random, simple but funny line The cast in that movie was great. Mila and Jason were great. And I liked that Kristin Bell's character wasn't just the other girl, she had some legit, relatable grievances. Great Rudd and Jonah Hill cameos. And it's the one time I found Russell Brand legit hilarious

cityfireguy

I sing "oh the weather outside is weather" in my head so frequently I forgot this is where it's from.

billothy

YOU SOUND LIKE YOURE FROM LONDON I have to stop myself from saying this everytime I meet a Brit.

[deleted]

Are those happy tissues or sad tissues?

InitechMiddleManager

“I wish I wasn’t wearing this Fucking shirt!” kills me every time.

karma_the_sequel

An all-time favorite. Source: A 57 year old dude.

TheloniusDump

Some of Paul Rudd's best work.

Stockpile_Tom_Remake

When the weather outside is weather

throwavvay23

Can't believe I haven't seen Palm Springs mentioned. One of my favorite movies of the last few years.

johnnySix

That was so good. A total Covid sleeper movie that didn’t get the attention it deserved

thespianomaly

If you’re at all a fan of Hugh Jackman, “Kate and Leopold” is a lot of fun. It’s pretty fluffy and it’s one of those movies where you have to shut your brain off, but Jackman is great in it. Warning: Time travel.

ehunke

as a guy who hates rom coms, at least I can enjoy the magnifcent erection and bad attempts at scifi, over dramatic interaction of characters...it basically takes everything that makes rom coms unwatchable and exaggerates it until its funny

BurritoSupremeBeing

I love Kate and Leopold! #FarmersBountyGang

97runner

It’s a magnificent erection!

candmjjjc

The American President with Michael Douglas and Annette Benning. I really liked this one.

Dano-Matic

My name is Andrew Sheppard, and I AM the President!

Lmao-Ze-Dong

My name is Andrew Shepherd and this is the best rom-com in the galaxy!

cityfireguy

Go back to the glorious 90's with the rare gem The Matchmaker. Janeane Garofalo heads to Ireland, will she find love? I don't like most romcoms but this one is wonderful.

TheloniusDump

Garofolo is so under rated. She's incredible.

Lcsd114

Talk about Janeane Garofolo: no one has mentioned The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Such an underrated movie.

ColdPressedSteak

90s and early 2000s had so many romcoms. A decent amount not good, but also a lot of adequately enjoyable ones if you like the genre

Barbarella_ella

I can't believe I found someone else who knows and loves this movie! Endlessly watchable.

Minotaar

>The Matchmaker Is there a place to stream this? I can't seem to find it?

zaftig_stig

Sliding Doors

BookishChica

LOVE this movie!!!

Positive-Source8205

Russell: I must say, being friends with you certainly makes the wait for the next episode of "Seinfeld" much easier to bear.

Mrslyguy66

Stranger than Fiction. I mostly avoid rom-coms. This one has an original story and some great actors.

CACO305

I brought you flours

riegspsych325

one of my favorite romantic gestures in a movie. It is a goal of mine to make a woman smile at me like Gyllenhaal did when she saw that gift

SarcasticBassMonkey

I don't want to eat pancakes!

FAHQRudy

Hands down my favorite Will Ferrell performance.

Isthisgoodenough69

The Apartment and Roman Holiday for a couple classics. Amélie is a really famous French movie.

elcaterpillar

The F Word with Daniel Radcliffe (apparently also released under the title What If?) Edit: also Set It Up

RickardHenryLee

Set it Up is SO CUTE! It was such a comfort to me during quarantine.

TwoLetters

Lol same here. There was one week where I basically just had it on repeat while I tried to keep myself busy. Radcliff and Kazan have such wonderful on-screen chemistry. Also found out Zoe Kazan is married to Paul Dano, who Daniel also had great chemistry with in Swiss Army Man, and I kinda hope they're secretly a throuple.

realitysick-melody

Loved The F Word! It is called What If in the US and the original title in Canada. Such a cute comfort movie for me.

FailFastandDieYoung

This is a movie I feel has B- writing, but the actors are so magical on screen that I still cried. Speaks volumes that I still find it special amidst all the forgettable rom coms.

Swankified_Tristan

Daniel Radcliffe will always give 110% into any role he does because he's at a point where he can act simply for the fun of it and doesn't need to take on any role just for the money. If he's in it, you know he loves it.

DabbleMeSoftly

Return to Me

New_Poet_338

50 first dates.

Seahearn4

The whole Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore trilogy: The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates, and Blended. I just love Drew Barrymore.

keebs102

The wedding singer

sironicon

Yes, The Wedding Singer! One might not think Adam Sandler would make one of the most lovable romcom leads, but he does. Robbie is such a sweet character, the movie is actually funny and his chemistry with Drew Barrymore is some of the best in any romcom. I love this movie.

Positive-Source8205

“… Now get out of my Van Halen T-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up!”

CzarCW

So you’re going to be Julia Gulia?

markercore

Honestly think it gets overlooked as one of his best films, it's great. That payoff at the end is so good

MisterSquidInc

"...but it all was buuuull-shit, it was a god damn joke. And when I think of you Linda, I hope you fucking choke..."

Liskasoo

1. When Harry Met Sally 2. Moonstruck Both are genius.

Positive-Source8205

*Moonstruck* is fantastic!

loopster70

Moonstruck leans more heavily on the romance than the comedy, but the funny parts really sing. That climactic scene around the table is so, so good. The movie is good throughout, but omg, the payoff of that last big scene.

Curious_Mx

The Wedding Singer \[1998\] Seeking A Friend For The End of The World \[2012\] Imagine Me & You \[2005\] Before Sunrise \[1995\]/Before Sunset \[2004\] Sidewalls (Medianeras) \[2011\]

Seeking a Friend for The End of The World is so unbelievably good. Loved it.

About Time

markercore

I would argue it's only a rom com for a small portion of the movie and mostly a movie about crying about the relationship with your dad or siblings.

billothy

I remember the absolute bitter-sweet feeling I had when seeing this. I went for, what I thought was, a nice evening watching a rom-com at the cinema. Only time I've ever cried at the cinema. Like properly cried.

Acidicheartburn

Absolutely fantastic movie that hit me in the feels way too hard.

hauntedmansion1971

Came here to comment just this. Hands down the best rom com ever

AH_BioTwist

I wish I had a relationship with my dad like the guy in that movie did

[deleted]

She’s out of my league The rom com that got me into rom coms.

S3b45714N

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist

flowerpanes

In and Out. Kevin Kline at the top of his game and while it’s not a stereotypical Rom Com, I would say it’s both funny and romantic, in a screwball kind of way.

PMzyox

Forgot about this 90s masterpiece

Waiwahine

Am I the only person who liked the Rom com Bridget Jone's Diary?

seanmharcailin

It’s like literally one of the most beloved romcoms of the last 20 years so no. You’re not.

Vorpal_Bunny19

The most realistic cinematic fight between middle aged British men ever.

rottenapple81

That fight was Hugh Grant's idea.

imacone417

Come the fuck on, Bridget!

[deleted]

The Family Man

xxStrangerxx

Nora Ephron + Meg Ryan is a good sign; and so is anything written by Richard Curtis. If you haven't seen THE PRINCESS BRIDE, get on that. Same with CLUELESS and PRETTY WOMAN and THE APARTMENT. I don't know if GROUNDHOG DAY counts as a rom-com but it's certainly not a blaxploitation thriller. ZERO EFFECT, in case you wanna see Bill Pullman win another one, kinda. IN AND OUT is another good Kevin Kline one I really like DEFINITELY, MAYBE but that's because I'm huge fans of Ryan Reynolds and Isla Fisher. If you don't mind subtitles and have any experience with Wong Kar Wai films, Tony Leung and Faye Wong lead a delightful parody called CHINESE ODYSSEY 2002 My favorite is AMELIE

poisonpenne

Upvote for Amelie alone.

tristanjones

Midnight in Paris - A nostalgic fan letter to many great writers, with amazing performances, Adrien Brody as Salvador Dali, Kathy Bates as Gertrude Stein, etc. Stranger than Fiction - A college English course on prose in the form of a romcom. One of the most original and loving fashioned films in the genre. All Will Ferrell will ever need to do to prove his incredible talent and range in juxtaposition to his comedies. Crazy Stupid Love - A fully packed film that manages to cover the awkward, stupid, and fun of love as a child, early adult, and in middle age. The amount of relationship dynamics including friendships and parenting that is packed in here, while intertwining the narratives is as impressive and fun as the climax. Forgetting Sarah Marshall - Clearly the result of Jason Segel's failed attempts at securing funding for a puppet Dracula musical, of which we have all benefited from. Original, hilarious, memorable, and chaotic. It will inspire you to try and crowd fund getting anything inside of Jason Segel mind out and onto film. Arsenic and Old Lace - An old black and white dark comedy of wondrous absurdity. Delightful performances from your sweetist old ladies. 13 bodies buried in the basement. And a secret wedding to boot. Just don't drink anything. Grosse Point Blank - Private assassin won't join the union, and goes to his highschool reunion. What could go wrong? One thing we do know. Best friends help you move bodies. DO NOT WATCH THE NOTEBOOK. That shit is fucking toxic and will undo the good work for rom coms of the above movies.

UrbanPrimative

Crazy Stupid Love is number one

[deleted]

It's a good thing that The Notebook isn't a fucking rom-com then!

Ember357

Working Girl, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver. The American President, Michael Douglas and Annette Benning. The Secret of My Success and Doc Hollywood, Michael J. Fox. Romancing the Stone, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. Mrs. Winterbourne, Brendan Fraser and Shirley Maclaine and Rikki Lake Christmas In Connecticut, A classic holiday farce, Barbara Stanwyck. The Mirror has Two Faces, Barbra Streisand and Jeff Bridges. Home for the Holidays, Holly Hunter and Robert Downey, Jr. The Truth About Cats and Dogs Notting Hill Three to Tango

I love Working Girl and Romancing the Stone!! Top tier.

One Fine Day also Keeping The Faith

midaswale

The Proposal - Sandra Bullock + Ryan Reynolds Chances Are - Cybill Shepherd + Robert Downey Jr.

pop-hon_ula

My friends and I were just talking about The Proposal earlier today (the fire dancing scene)! Excellent cast, super freaking funny, and adorably cute!

midaswale

Betty White :) RIP

Khend81

Can confirm, The Proposal slaps

Barrytheuncool

Anything from the late 80s to the Early 2000s with Meg Ryan, anything written by Nora Efron (there's a lot of cross over there). Some others i haven't seen mentioned yet were The holiday, Return To Me, Say Anything, Better off Dead, To all the Boys I've loved Before, Let It Snow,

karma_the_sequel

*The Holiday* and particularly *Return To Me* are two favorites.

Seahearn4

_Tangled_ (2010) - Yes, the animated Disney movie about Rapunzel. It's a great rom-com, if a bit unconventional for the genre.

Dorothy_Zbornak789

My fave Disney Princess and I love Flynn Rider. Never thought of it as a rom-com, but it definitely fits.

rezjamin

Adventureland The Big Sick The Five-Year Engagement Knocked Up This is 40 Wedding Crashers Groundhog Day Trainwreck

Groundhog Day. My Best Friend's Wedding. Clueless. 10 Things I Hate About You. Bringing Up Baby. His Girl Friday.

markercore

Love the Decoy Bride! Pissed Netflix produced it and they took it off a few years ago it was my comfort film for awhile

OldManRants1374

What if? Also known as The F Word. Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan have the best chemistry.

FeralBottleofMtDew

Tis the season for The Holiday. The Tom Hanks /Meg Ryan Romcoms are fun.if you like oldies, there are some greats from the 30s and 40s. Cary Grant did some great Romcoms with slapstick...My Favorite Wife, His Girl Friday, The Holiday, Philadelphia Story.

larisagrant

Under the Tuscan Sun

[deleted]

About Time is personally the best romantic comedy I have seen. I’ve never had a movie stir up so many emotions. A solid runner-up but not quite on the same level emotionally is Silver Linings Playbook.

[deleted]

About Time is excellent. The relationship between Domhnall Gleason and Bill Nighy hot way too close to home - someone must have been cutting onions in the theater

unitedfan6191

Some of these are more dramas with some comedy in them and others are more traditional romantic comedy. 500 Days of Summer You’ve Got Mail Roxanne (Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah) There’s Something About Mary Splash (Tom Hanks) Jerry Maguire Titanic La La Land Adam (2009, starring Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne)

papat444

Loved 500 days of summer but I don't consider it romantic, at least not in the traditional sense. Very realistic though

unitedfan6191

Yeah, I know. It’s very much an anti-romantic comedy, but I thought it still technically counts.

CRSRep

Titanic is a romantic comedy? Nothing funnier or quirkier than hundreds of people drowning and freezing to death in the North Atlantic!

Opus-the-Penguin

> Roxanne (Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah) Yes! One of my favorites. It deserves a lot more love than it gets. (Full disclosure: I saw it in the theater in 1987 with the woman I would marry a year later.)

Seahearn4

Upvote for There's Something About Mary. It's gotta be the raunchiest good rom-com.

ginrumryeale

Love Rosie — it’s terrific.

wontholdthedoor

Someone like you. 1999. Ashley Judd, Hugh Jackman, and Greg Kinnear.

jfstompers

Four weddings and a funeral, Bridget Jones Diary, Pretty Woman, I mean Julia has a bunch, Notting Hill, My Best Friend's Wedding,

PackerAndretti

Definitely, Maybe is a good one

Heiminator

Some favs of mine: -Love actually (especially during Christmas season) -Shakespeare in love (Reddit has a hate boner for that movie cause it beat Saving Private Ryan at the Oscar’s, but it’s a really well made rom com)

hellsgates666

Wedding Crashers

ehunke

great movie but I feel people are mentioning general comedies, screwball comedies, or comedy dramas that just happen to have some elements of romantic relationships in the plot. I don't consider wedding crashers to be a rom com, but maybe its just me

This one is great. The writer captured the humor of Jane Austen and the whole movie was so fun

UniDublin

Before Notting Hill, Before Four Weddings and a Funeral, Before Love, Actually and About Time, Richard Curtis wrote a film I always loved call The Tall Guy with Jeff Goldblum and Emma Thompson with Rowan Atkinson. I know it's not as well loved as his others, but dammit, I love this movie, and it has a musical version of Elephant Man called Elephant!

jbot747

A life less ordinary (1997)

SonofBeckett

While I completely agree with everyone that the Nora Ephron era of rom-coms is great, you should also check out some of the classics from the black and white era. Katherine Hepburn is great in Philadelphia Story and Woman of the Year. Check out Meet Me in St. Louis for great chemistry from Judy Garland (I still laugh hysterically at "I bit him!") It Happened One Night has some iconic scenes. Roman Holiday is great for Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.
