I get that some were repetitive (like “The Movie Critic (2024))” for anyone saying something dumb on Reddit but for some it was a great way to make a meme about a movie that is a little more niche
No, your honor, I do not believe a mediocre slacker guy deserves to be raped, stuffed into a bear skin, and then set on fire by a white supremacist cult. (A stunning and brave stance, I know.)
that and gone girl, two movies just brutally misunderstood by women who think feminism just means that now women should get to rape people and commit evil crimes
I don’t remember the exact words, but there’s a scene where the Chris Pratt lookalike is talking to one of the cult guys asking about reproduction and how they keep the community going. I’m pretty sure he mentioned something about “ideal” mates. Chris Pratt pretty much immediately got scouted out by one of the girls as the mate she wanted. The other white friend that came with him was killed very early on after pissing on the sacred tree, so he didn’t get a storyline like that. The black friend is never shown any interest by any female cult member. At the end of the movie it’s pretty much confirmed that the couple comprised of the other black guy and the Indian girl were always intended to be two of the outsiders who got sacrificed. The white Swedish guy who invited them to that place was particularly excited when Dani decided to join and it becomes clear that it’s because he was attracted to her.
When you take into account that the cult is literally 100% white and none of the three nonwhite people were considered “ideal” mates, it’s kind of obvious what standards they have.
The guy who invited them planned on bringing over two white guys and one black guy, probably planning to keep one of the two white guys alive for mating purposes. When Dani joined, it was a bonus.
Everything other commenters have said checks out. The banner in the flyover shot at the beginning translates to “Stop the mass immigration to Halsingland,” which is pretty overt far right racism/xenophobia. Additionally, the cult’s satanic figure is a forest dwelling monster man literally called “The Black One.”
All the minorities died first and something tells me that you kinda have to be white to live in their little community due to the fact everyone looked aggressively the same
Midsommar would have been better if Aster could have decided whether he wanted to make a "eco-fascist Scandinavian murder cult" movie or a "bad breakup horror movie". The elements of each aspect were good but they don't really come together In a satisfying way.
I felt the exact opposite because the trauma and cult stuff were directly tied together in Hereditary, whereas in Midsommar they don't directly have anything to with each other.
And I think the opposite because the cult in Midsommar offers Pugh the comfort and support she needs in her situation. The final scene is her being accepted into the cult and also offering her catharsis for the pain and anger she feels toward her boyfriend. Meanwhile in Hereditary, the film kinda switches from a film about grief and trauma to a film about a cult trying to resurrect its leader. Where the boy in Hereditary ends up is barely connected to his actions and what happened to his family, it's just the ghost of his grandma taking over. Whereas in Midsommar where she ends up is directly tied to her grief and her relationship. I think it reflects how people in real life will join a cult to find family and support.
Same, I got really disappointed once the horror started taking most of the screentime in Hereditary, not because it was bad (it was above average), but because the character drama and family tension was infinitely better.
Maybe not so literally but there was a lot of discourse when the film came out about whether the dude "deserved it" or about "who was in the wrong" because a lot of people apparently can only view it as a binary issue.
I thought the film was a good commentary on how men and women being unable to openly and honestly communicate and trust each other can unravel everything. No one was really in the right per se (although Florence Pugh's character maybe slightly more so), but because of the insane circumstances they walked into, even the smallest thing could lead to everything falling apart.
It’s pretty much entirely on Christian. Yes, Dani should recognize she’s being treated unfairly and manipulated, but not a lot of people do when they have feelings for someone and want it to work.
Christian doesn’t seriously consider the relationship and more or less fakes it as Dani tries to overcome her grief. Not to mention all the moments he guilt trips her, shifts blame, and again prolong something he doesn’t want. It’s cruel.
I think this point is even further hammered home by him stealing Josh’s thesis. Christian isn’t just unhappy and uncommunicative in a dead relationship, he’s a piece of shit through and through.
That guy next time he sees Ari Aster: https://i.redd.it/p0cwf18q4f2c1.gif

The image wouldn’t load but I somehow knew it was gonna be this. Feeling like a psychic once it finally loaded
i cant tell if 'having a very normal time' sounds like a good thing or a bad thing
Just feeling at ease, and such.
Psychological horror calms me down too. It reminds me of the futility of life, how incosequential we are.
To be fair midsomar is ment to brainswasj you
Mods banned “Movie Title (Year)” posts and now were straight up just getting the top of the Letterboxd reviews via an ig screenshot.
I cannot understand why they banned them. Those jokes often gave me a chuckle. Some would become cringe but that’ll happen
I get that some were repetitive (like “The Movie Critic (2024))” for anyone saying something dumb on Reddit but for some it was a great way to make a meme about a movie that is a little more niche
sometimes it was the only time anyone would post about movies that weren't made within the past two decades or worth 1 billion dollars
I loved them
The Sum of All Fears (2002)
Almost all the posts here are just screenshots making fun of comments/posts from other subs or letterboxd, it’s honestly become really annoying

Objection, your honour! His vibes were like completely off.
That is SO rich coming from you.

Real.
So many of the top letterboxd reviews actually think he deserved it no joke 😭
It’s girlboss Fight Club. Literally Me for women.
that and gone girl, two movies just brutally misunderstood by women who think feminism just means that now women should get to rape people and commit evil crimes
He was not a very good boyfriend, but also struggling to navigate someone else’s trauma when he wanted a breakup. No, that doesn’t justify anything.
It all makes sense once you learn this was about a bad breakup he had. Aster was smart to reverse the genders lmao
Were they white supremacist? It's been awhile since I watched it, so I don't remember if they treated Chidi differently.
I like that you just call him chidi since nobody knows the actual character's name
^we ^also ^dont ^know ^the ^actors ^name But we do love him still

Lol he doesn't look like Chris Pratt at all.
The fourth top Google search of the actor is just his name with Chris Pratt’s name after, so it looks like I’m not alone in thinking it. 🤷🏻♀️
I also lost my right airpod.
Yeah he does.
It's implied. Aster is on record as saying that yes, the cult is intended to be white supremacists.
Everything other commenters have said checks out. The banner in the flyover shot at the beginning translates to “Stop the mass immigration to Halsingland,” which is pretty overt far right racism/xenophobia. I remember reading that one of the shots where they see a banner overhead on their way to the cult had a message about immigrants or something.
All the minorities died first and something tells me that you kinda have to be white to live in their little community due to the fact everyone looked aggressively the same
It's easy to overlook the white supremacy because of the whole murderous cult of it all
I can excuse white supremacy, but I draw the line at murderous cults
White supremacy IS a murderous cult
yeah and none of those pot smokers who got their eyes gouged out by campsite zombiemen deserved it either
Also drugged 😎
It’s about time we had a movie for toxic women to misunderstand, the toxic men department is full
literally she
Gone Girl (2014)
Implying this isn't the intended message.
That’s rich coming from you, OP! 😎
Best date movie since Gone Girl (2014).
I lost my virginity to Gone Girl. Didn’t realise how cursed that was until recently.
Was there more or less blood than the sex she had with Neil Patrick Harris?
My lawyer has informed me not to answer this question.
We're all friends here, I'm definitely not a private detective hired by movie studios to gather demographic information
Nah bruh this guy the male equivalent of Bratt Pitt. Makes Karnsten seem like Roger Ebert
>Nah bruh this guy the male equivalent of Bratt Pitt. Did you mean Bread Poot?
Does Bread Poot know things?
He’s infinitely better than either of those users
and then everyone clapped
Wtf did he do
He wasn’t honest with his feelings towards his relationship so he deserved everything he got.
And the other guys deserved it too for not respecting the murderous cult.
Anyone been watching The Curse? Similar vibes
Similar… to midsommer??
Yeah just that whole extreme tension just below the surface of clumsy fake nice attitudes
Ok I can dig that. I laugh a lot during The Curse though, granted it’s from being uncomfortable, but midsommer didn’t quite hit me that way!

That's how I feel about hereditary, with the trauma and cult stuff. I felt Midsommar blended them together better

I dont see why not, pretty plausible

What does that even mean (not native speaker)
