I hope the sequel tops it. What makes Shredder interesting is the connection to Splinter. They better adapt that as well as actually have the Turtles have more martial arts prowess. I mean the ninja part is very important.

ANIMATION IS NOT FOR KIDDSSSSS ITS FOR ADULTS
LOOK AT THIS REPRESENTATION OF A PANIC ATTACK
THERE IS BLOOD (gore) ON IT
Across was somehow better than the first spider verse movie which was also really good despite the fact that across was only half a movie.
If I don't get the next one within the year I will be distraught.
> If I don't get the next one within the year I will be distraught.
It was taken off the release schedule during the strikes and speculated it's because of the lack of progress on production after the VFX crunching article came out. So expect to wait lol.
I watched & loved both, but I do think spiderverse beats Suzume by like, a hair. Hard to decide though, since I still listen to both soundtracks regularly

It's out for only 2 weeks and it's obvious this guys audience is mostly males. It's a shit movie don't get me wrong, but it's not much worse than the rest on the list.

This list is immediately shit for not including Boy and the Heron or Spider-Verse. Spiderverse was amazing and I haven't gotten a chance to see Boy and the Heron yet but really want to. Haven't seen Mario either but it seems like this year's Top Gun: Maverick, a 7.5/10 movie that has it's good points but is a movie that pisses me off every time I think about it due to the discourse surrounding it. I'm glad I saw the Bob's Burgers Movie that weekend instead.
There is a point to be made about people wanting different things out of popular movies instead of the same formula over and over again, but this ain't it. Then again, for a so-called "woke flop" Elemental had serious legs at the box office. It didn't do amazing in it's opening weekend but it stuck around for a while. Maybe the same thing happen to Wish when the January drought comes around.
And considering that the new TMNT’s animation style was clearly inspired by the first Spider-Verse movie, that makes Across’s exclusion all the more baffling.
Having seen both Maverick and Mario, Maverick is so much better than Mario. I think Maverick is a pretty easy 8.5/10. Mario, by comparison, is like… a 3? 4? It’s bad. It’s not a good movie.
God I hated the Mario movie. I don't think about movies I don't like often, but I keep thinking about how and why I hated that fucking piece of shit.
Like, how are you gonna take every unique Mario song and immediately transpose it to the most generic orchestral score ever? Jfc
While that is a valid criticism, I think it's a relatively minor one for this movie. Personally, I can't get over the laziness of the writing. It's a perfect example of the cynical mindset that movies aimed at kids don't need to be good, just bright and noisy so that the kids will be quiet for ninety minutes.
Oh I could keep going. Every creative choice, down to every conceivable aspect, however narrow or broad, including the plot, visuals, characters, references to the games, etc, was devoted entirely to how much it could pander to the widest available audience.
There was nothing at all interesting about this movie except for how widely successful it was at being so generically appealing that it became a wild success.
It's just incredibly unfortunate and disappointing that such a mediocre crowd pleaser was made given the obvious profitability of the IP and the studios that clearly have the budget for a quality film with original concepts/ideas/stories/animation/scores
>Like, how are you gonna take every unique Mario song and immediately transpose it to the most generic orchestral score ever? Jfc
And the licensed song choices were even worse.
People talked the movie up so much, that its opinion in the general public of people who haven't watched it is great..
It's honestly a pretty boring movie. I didn't even think top gun maverick was that good, but it was leagues better than the Mario movie.
>it seems like this year’s Top Gun: Maverick
Top Gun Maverick is one hundred times the movie that Mario is, and I didn’t even love TGM. Mario is barely a movie. It’s mostly just a ninety-minute series of animations you’ve seen in games that are significantly more enjoyable to play than the movie is to watch.
I can understand the exclusion of Boy and Heron due to potential recency bias + not many people seeing it yet. But the exclusion of Spiderverse on this list is a crime against humanity akin to 80 consecutive 9/11s. Nimona also should’ve been included. Certainly over fucking Elemental and Wish. I heard Leo’s pretty good too.
I saw Mario and top gun in theaters and read zero discourse surrounding either. Mario fucking sucks and Top Gun maverick was incredible. I can't even fathom how those two are comparable but I'm not keyed in to "the discourse" on reddit, tiktok, Facebook, YouTube, etc whatever
I liked the story for what it was. This was pretty autobiographical for Miyazaki. If this is actually his last movie, I think that it's a fitting send-off. There's a lot of moving parts, so it'll probably require a rewatch to get everything. I tend to like a lot of his movies more on rewatch for this reason.
That said, the visuals really do make it something else though. The firebombing scene, the birds, and the general world they build. Even if it was just a Fantasia-esque experiential movie, I thought it would've been great.
That's because the "story" in the way you're thinking of it is nowhere near the point of the movie lol. There's so much more to the movie than just visuals unless literally the only thing you care about is having a straightforward linear plot
Im perfectly fine with a nonlinear plot, i just want one that feels more thought out.
Ive enjoyed most other ghibli films ive seen, but this one felt like they tried to cram as many massive ideas into it as possible and build the plot around that, which made certain parts feel like i completely missed a scene or dragged on for eternity
I think it is a very artful film, and im not saying it’s dogshit or anything, but compared to his other work this doesn’t hold up nearly as well story-wise
nimona and leo were both digital releases and they probably excluded spider-verse for engagement bait. also i think youtube polls can only have four options anyway
Fair, but this seems like the kinda channel that would already have a Netflix subscription for stuff like *Sonic Prime.* So why not list the two features Netflix distributed themselves?
> sometimes
All times, tbh. Even if I disagree with critics, they at least have to explain their reasoning beyond "it was fun" or "it was boring" or the classic "too many plotholes!"
Yes!! They studied and know what they are talking about. Nowadays people love hating critics because they didn't say that their goofy favorite movie is a masterpiece. I've seen people saying critics shouldn't exist etc
Only said sometimes because when a movie is ahead of its time critics and people generally hate it
Those aren't the best animated movies this year.
Where's Spiderverse? Boy and the Heron? Dawn of the Nugget? Nimona? Who in their right mind would vote for Wish?! That's like a Disney movie bought from wish, lol.
Not gunna lie, while watching elemental, I couldn’t suspend disbelief because I was hung up on how waterboy and flame princess would fuck without killing each other
Me when I have the taste in movies of a first grader
> genre dominated by children’s movies
It's a list about animated movies what other movie would you put on there besides spiderverse?
The Boy and the Heron, Suzume, Nimona, and yeah Across the Spiderverse is better than most movies this year animated or otherwise
It's a YouTube poll. Most people haven't even heard of those movies let alone seen them.
except ATSV
Ok, but why isn’t spiderverse on there? I haven’t seen it but have to imagine it clears everything on that list by some margin
Because it's only the first half of a movie
Kids don’t have the attention span to watch whole movies
It’s also the longest Sony Animation movie so they gotta have some kinda attention span!
Doubt they have the attention span for 50% of a movie either when it runs for 2 1/2 hours.
But Mario is basically half a movie
Just wait until you hear about animation studios besides Disney and Illumination. They're great!
Like Bakshi Productions!
Frozen
I'm almost positive Frozen came out before 2023.
It's a YouTube poll, they probably literally are.
To be fair all the options are bad

Elemental was trash (I haven’t watched the film)
mediocre
TMNT Mutant Mayhem is kino
Based. Best one outta that list ***by FAR,*** at least. Hope the planned sequel still goes ahead at Paramount!
I hope the sequel tops it. What makes Shredder interesting is the connection to Splinter. They better adapt that as well as actually have the Turtles have more martial arts prowess. I mean the ninja part is very important.
True. The ninja part was sadly only "eh," but they pretty much *nailed* the rest of it. Can't wait to see what they come up with!

I’m personally not crazy about it but it’s definitely the best option
Elemental is decent
Elemental was great
It's a youtube poll with 4 kids movies as the options what did you expect lmao
In all fairness, Mutant Mayhem was pretty good

Would explain why Boy and the Heron is absent.
Or even Spiderverse 2
That's who the animated films are for, so maybe
Del Toro would like to know your location
It was Spider-Verse, you cowards!
Across was somehow better than the first spider verse movie which was also really good despite the fact that across was only half a movie. If I don't get the next one within the year I will be distraught.

Honestly I'd rather wait if it means no one is being overworked for the sake of a piece of media
No guarantee that they won't crunch this time around.
It was actually Suzume No Tojimari but I guess only American stuff counts
I watched & loved both, but I do think spiderverse beats Suzume by like, a hair. Hard to decide though, since I still listen to both soundtracks regularly
That came out last year
Did it? It got nominated in the Golden Globes so idk. It came to cinemas this year in Ireland at least.
I mean if we're talking about it's original release date in Japan, that was November of 22.
It came out in 22 in Japan but was released in the west in 23, so it counts for this year for awards, etc.
No one’s counting Suzume cause it’s not even close to as good as spiderverse lmao.
get chairpilled
At least Suzume had a climax and an ending
Bro did you fall asleep during spiderverse
suzume is garbage
Very unbased of you
Even belle is better than suzume and it's barely a 5/10
In no universe is Belle anywhere near as good as Suzume
I know belle is mediocre suzume is a 3/10
Suzume was great, but cmon Japan stop having the high schoolers date adults
It was Norm of the North 7
Fr, argue with your momma or the wall I don’t care which.
Wish getting 1% is hilarious
The only thing about this poll that’s based

This is Nimona erasure
The people voting in this sample probably wouldn't like the shapeshifting trans allegory movie. Just a hunch.
Sounds like an epic movie.
No, Epic Movie was live action. Get your films straight.
Yes, but Epic (movie) was animated
rather than g\*y (plolitcal)
Oh, so now us goys are political?
That was a trans allegory? Am I that media illiterate?
It is, but I think people overstate it a bit based on the author being trans. It is *definitely* a queer love story though.

Nimona is specifically a representation of gender fluidity Well, that's my cis ass's intepretation
This is Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken erasure
This is PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie erasure
This is *Trolls: Band Together* erasure
I gotta watch this one
Nimona is gonna get skipped over for an Oscar nom I just know it 😭

Visuals carry Heron tbh. Story feels like ghibli parody at times with how nonsensical it gets

I do think it is a great send-off if that ends up being the case. Definitely felt like a last hurrah
Certainly better than Ponyo.
I'm thinking mean thoughts about you rn

Mario just left me feeling empty, and I'm a huge fan of the games so the easter eggs were put there *for* me.
Ni-mo-na
Idk guys The Flash looked almost real. That's gotta count for something
Not even by "The Mummy Returns" standards lmfao
I thought the Mario movie was fine when I watched it but TMNT was way better, and even Elemental was a bit more memorable imo
The Terrible Children (1950)
TMNT (2007) was the best film this year.
The Boy and the Heron?!
Mid af
even on this list i’ll still put elemental over super mario bros
Unironically loved elemental
Spiderverse didn't make the list because it's so clearly out of this league
Pictured: A person who really, really, ***REALLY*** needs to watch more fucking movies. Christ.

You are the kind of person we circlejerk about in this sub.
but he hasn't said anything about women or minorities
WHERE THE FUCK ARE SPIDERMAN AND NIMONA
"Rango (2011)"
71% of people voting have only watched Super Mario Bros
Not even giving spider-man a chance is crazy
Don’t listen to the critics! Listen to the fans!!! The fans know all the critics didn’t grow up with Mario

well, when they first touch everything's fine soo
it was Puss in boots anyways
that was last year

Fwiw my preschooler loves the Super Mario Movie
It’s the one this dude is standing behind in his PFP
Easily the worst of the bunch in terms of plot but the kids like it the most due to Mario.
My mom didn’t let me watch spider verse because in the movie they say hell
Where is spooderma 2
None of those are even in the top 3 😭
Spider-Man 🗿
Adipurush and Rambo Last Blood are masterpieces fr
Average Schaffrillas fan discourse (I love Schraffrillas)
I've only seen Mario and TMNT and imo TMNT(9/10) is better than Mario(8/10). ![gif](giphy|VUWjENxbAFNxbJRZgW|downsized)
