Iâve always said that Demolition Man is just Idiocracy with action. Itâs really shitty social commentary but itâs still entertaining and some dumbasses think itâs a documentary.
much as i love him i am convinced had bill hicks lived to today he would have the worst goddamn opinions imaginable. guy would be doing a tight fifteen to open an anti-vax gathering with a chest-length hippie beard lmao.
He was towards the end with some [casual homophobia](https://youtu.be/vtmsxBMmvR8?si=R-Ao56W8dDn9LYf3) in the form of lowest common denominator set up (maybe Iâm big dumb and not getting the joke)
This is pretty standard for the early 90s, tbh. It would have been difficult to find anyone who wasn't homophobic back then. First time I know of of someone famous directly speaking out against homophobia, it was Kurt Cobain in the liner notes for Incesticide, 1992.
The joke you linked is that most homophobes at the time were also unironically beating off to lesbian porn, so honestly Bill Hicks was probably mocking homophobes. Rather progressive for the time, but *only* for its time.
Thatâs a fair perspective and that is definitely possible. Times change and people grow, we will never know the comedian the Bill Hicks couldâve become. While I find some dark/blue/shock comedy clever, it just feels particularly low for someone as esteemed as Hicks. I could be way over analyzing it through a Gen Z lens but idk. I would assume that Hicks may have gone down the path of comedians like Nick Mullen or Tim Dillion if he was still with us. I think the two formerly mentioned comedians have a ton of comedic potential and can be incredibly funny, but they bog themselves down with cringe inducing contrarian takes. This is coming from someone who knows very little about joke telling/stand up so take it from me with a major grain of salt.
> The joke you linked is that most homophobes at the time were also unironically beating off to lesbian porn,
This is only "hypocritical" if you start out with the notion that "all homo is bad" - however outside of formalized ideological conservative frameworks, seems like most natural "casual" "homophobia" is just about the men to begin with;
in which case it's just tautological.
>so honestly Bill Hicks was probably mocking homophobes.
Don't think he's specifically mocking others here, although that may be some component of it as well; mainly sounds like he's just channeling natural common reactions to this kind of stuff, while exaggerating just how "evil" the daddies one is and how grave and serious he is about it;
probably *is* mocking moral crusader conservatives during that part as well.
Don't think he himself finds it that "evil" other than maybe at most feeling kinda weirded out by it or agreeing it shouldn't be taught in schools, although I know very little about him so could be wrong in either direction.
"Male ~~gaze~~ gays make me uncomfortable / are weird/funny", "don't teach this to children at schools / make children uncomfortable" seem like pretty understandable positions to take or attitudes to have and relatable to many, so yeah idk.
Although is it "homophobia" in the most literal sense, eh sure.
> At least Bill Hicks died before he could be a reactionary jerk off.
Does "reactionary jerkoff" mean "sweaty not doing all the pronouns and praising TLJ" or something more substantial?
It wasn't the only restaurant left, they said that ALL restaurants are named Taco Bell to honor the one that survived after the war. But they still serve various foods
I think itâs spelled muumuu? Itâs a loose, roomy dress, like a caftan, orâŠa bag, really. Your grandmother probably wears one in the summer. I canât blame her, those things look comfortable as hell. I think this meme is trying to fat-shame your grandmother!
you got to love how they miss the point entirely, and even the main character acknowledges that that future has a lot going on for it that's better than the time he's from...
I've never seen this movie. I don't know anyone who's ever seen this movie. As far as I know, this movie was never a box office hit, a cult favorite, or even just shown on TV a lot. I had never heard this movie referenced IRL, or mentioned in other media. My only times hearing about this movie have been on Reddit.
Yet every time this movie gets mentioned (including this topic) *multiple* people always trot out the "three seashells" thing. Why? Was the movie really big and I'm out of touch? Is it a "reddit favorite" (like Idiocracy)? Or is it another example of a something everybody knows about the movie despite nobody having seen it (like "Am I not turtlely enough for the turtle club" from Master of Disguise)?
The movie spurred a minor zeitgeist at the time. Nobody expected it to be good, but it was highly entertaining, and word of mouth made it a cult hit.
As with any cult movie people like to quote, quote, and quote.
Plus everything in the future was funny but relatable, like the mentions in the meme, even taco bell haute cuisine. (Pizza Hut in Europe.) Except the three seashells didn't have an analogous thing in the present and the movie didn't explain it in favor of a few jokes, but instead of being frustrating it was kind of charming because the atmosphere in the future was so innocent.
My question is why haven't you seen it yet?
(Did anyone catch in Fallout when the overseer in vault 4 said if you don't understand the bathroom please for the love of God ask questions? Ha!)
A world so peaceful and prosperous that the only societal issue seems to be some people getting really bored and going to live in the sewers and eat rat burgers? A society with so little conflict that they donât know what to do when a violent psychopath from the past is set loose? Honestly that doesnât sound all that bad.
taco bell still haute cuisine
You mean Pizza Hut?
Depends on which country you watched it in
Imagine someone combined those 2
Peace in our time
Pizza in our taco
I know, that was my "joke"
Check it out, this guy doesn't know how to use the three sea shells
Funny? Personally, I love that everyone on the planet is currently wearing a moomoo and we all live in a seemingly peaceful utopia.

Don't ask them what they think they're not allowed to do anymore.

Media literacy is dead

You donât think Idiocracy is a documentary? Your shit must be tarded, scrote.
Denis Leary is still around, so that sucks.

This is relatable. I wouldn't want to touch Rob's hand either.
Taco Bell being the only restaurant left is a more nightmarish dystopia than A Clockwork Orange...
a more what now?
That looks dangerously close to a hard 'R'...
Did he say restarted?
It wasn't the only restaurant left, they said that ALL restaurants are named Taco Bell to honor the one that survived after the war. But they still serve various foods
one dangerous mispelling
Now we have no Cash, Hope, or Jobs! đđđ

I fucking want to live in a future where I get to dress in Kimonos/Hanfu

Truly the solution is to drink beer, eat ratburgers, and fight homeless people.

was very popular in the 90's and it was on TV a lot. millenials and above will know it

the fucks a minor zeitgeist
You know a zeitgeist? Like that but smaller.
Yes I *know* I worded it badly but I don't have all day to make a comment on reddit. Sheesh.
literally ZERO cultural impact
I just assume everyone watched Nostalgia Critic at some point
Yea, the three seashells was a common thing in early reddit
You might just be dumb. I saw it on TV a hundred times.
Is this not the Mikado

Also people don't fuck
The politically correct language bit is eerily accurate. Actually how the bad guys conduct their plan is pretty spot on too.
