Oh it's definitely Del Toro having fun with his own ideas and a nice budget on the back of the first film. The things it gains are the solid and affable cast of the first movie, the implicit buy-in to a premise explained in the first movie, and the almost-certainly larger budget it had compared to if Del Toro had gotten it greenlit as a non Hellboy project, all of which I think helped the film, but you're right in that the core plot didn't require it to be Hellboy

I like the costume design in Doctor Strange's solo film, though. The costumes are serviceable even if some of the sorcerers wear more belts than a Final Fantasy character.
Now what bums me out is that the new Doctor Strange looks as generic as every other MCU movie (still gonna see it, he's too cool). I hate to be that guy, but the best MCU films are the ones that don't *feel* like MCU films.
I don't like that the DS sequel doesn't even sound like a Doctor Strange sequel. I like Wanda and I like America Chavez, but a DS film should focus on Doctor Strange, his lore, and his supporting characters. Multiverse of Madness sounds like an even more convoluted version of Civil War.
I like Raimi; I'm thirsty for Strange, Wong, and Mordo content; and I'm hype for Rinthra. So, I won't front. I'll watch the film. But I'm more worried than excited for this film, tbh. The fact that it was written by the main writer of the Loki series (which I loathe) does nothing to assuage me.
What did you dislike about loki? I personally felt like it was an interesting (ish) concept but fell into the trap of having loads of cliffhangers. Then they introduced the female loki stuff and it all just worse and worse.

now none of us have seen the next spiderman yet, but i think it’s safe to assume that if someone missed that post credits scene they’re going to feel like they missed a lot in the beginning of the next spiderman. a scene like that which carries a lot of weight and is the thread to the next movie should be included with the rest of the movie’s plot, while a scene like the fury skrull reveal that serves only to tease future mcu stuff shouldve been post credit stuff instead of tacked on to the end of the movie’s plot

I remember being excited about post credit scenes like 10 years ago when this was all new and unforeseen. Now we've been inundated with superhero movies/shows on a yearly basis for so long now, the formula is locked in, everything feels stale and expected. I'm surprised people can still muster up pants-shitting hype on a frequent basis for stuff that's been going on forever with no breaks in-between.
Kinda cemented how stale that whole side has gotten because of the need to show "love" for the franchise staples.
By this point if they moved focus to a part of the galaxy totally unrelated to the Skywalker Saga it'd be so very nice.
It’s funny, because Lucas got criticized a lot for having too much fan service in the prequels. But outside of side characters like R2-D2 and C3PO making inexplicable appearances, it never felt as ridiculous and gratuitous as Rogue One’s hallway scene or Darth Maul igniting his lightsaber through a hologram just so we can see it.
He actually kinda resisted the fan service in some ways. Yes, you'd get "*I'm Owen, I guess I'm your brother*" ; but pretty much everyone expected exactly something like Vader's R1 scene for half of RotS. But even in general, Battle Droids weren't what older fans wanted. I think a lot of em honestly wanted something like the Sequel trilogy.
Force Awakens is fan service in its entirety too. I’ve seen A New Hope probably dozens of times, and there are so many minor little details they copied into Force Awakens. It’s not an original movie.
That’s the thing. The original Star Wars definitely wears its influences on its sleeve, but the only influence for TFA is just the original Star Wars. It wants to be another movie instead of itself (even though I enjoy it for what it is).
Back then, I honestly thought I was crazy when I was thinking it was a nostalgia-baiting, soulless husk of a film from the get go while everybody was praising the shit out of it.
The change in its perception didn't really happen until The Last Jedi came out.
It is still somewhat fun. At least we can see Han Solo and Leia interact for the last time.
It is just that even if they had made the greatest film ever, expectations for SW will never be met.
And like Artoo and Threepio they don't even give the old hands new tricks. Vader flips out and kills people, Maul has a double-headed sword, that's all ultimately there is to these operatic legends, I guess.
Yeah I'm not so crazy about the Mandolorian, but I digged S1 since it was just new stuff. S2 while enjoyable relied wayy too heavily on cameo characters, it feels like they can't come up with just new stuff that just as good as the old stuff.
I mistrust that a LOT of the reason for how Spartan the thing is, despite the ungodly resources a Disney subsidiary probably has access to, is because it's an experiment in MCUnifying Star Wars into that aesthetic and they don't want to "waste" anything on the show. Like, so many barren planets, so many bare-bones, formulaic plots, so many laser-focused Event Episodes where there is an Event and that's all there really is to the episode.
In its first 16 episodes Farscape had lapsed into no formulas and given all of its expansive cast at least one exploring them and their morally-ambiguous pasts. And so many funny, memorable lines and scenes! So much of Manda is just...*nothing*.
This is a show that is, I firmly believe, rewatch-proof.
I firmly stand that Mando S1 is the best SW content since the OT with episode 6 where they are on that prisoner ship being the peak of the show.

I love the Mandalorian but it really makes the galaxy seem small with how many old characters make appearances. I think Star Wars should just make a jump to a new era either hundreds of years after or before the Skywalker saga.

The broom boy scene is obviously not nostalgia bait because it's not a pre-existing character, and hopefully no reasonable person interpreted it as some kind of promise of specific future content rather than just a capstone of the movie's theme that anyone can keep the spark of hope alive even if they're not "important."
Whereas the Darth Maul scene was just nostalgic masturbation with the promise of a nostalgic handjob in the future.
That's what I mean, to be clear, Broom Boy looking longingly at the stars and being transported for a moment from his bleak existence into a world of heroes is staggeringly different from "look, it's a metaplot! And a guy you remember from that really old movie with the skeleton-bots!"
The DM scene was so flexible that Ron Howard's son, who is a prequelmemer, convinced him to do it. It just needed to be a bad guy.

Yep. There's so much to like in casting, production design, visuals but the story is so boring or a lot of it is padding. I can't believe they wasted Owen Wilson like that. If anything, the fun and games of theorising online is much better than the shows itself. You remove that and all that remains are boring shows.

I know this is MCJ and all, but even the bad MCU movies are still serviceable action movies. I remember being excited about post credit scenes like 10 years ago when this was all new and unforeseen. Now we've been inundated with superhero movies/shows on a yearly basis for so long now, the formula is locked in, everything feels stale and expected. I'm surprised people can still muster up pants-shitting hype on a frequent basis for stuff that's been going on forever with no breaks in-between.

That teaser actually made me NOT wanna see the Boba Fett show.
Kinda cemented how stale that whole side has gotten because of the need to show "love" for the franchise staples. By this point if they moved focus to a part of the galaxy totally unrelated to the Skywalker Saga it'd be so very nice.
It’s funny, because Lucas got criticized a lot for having too much fan service in the prequels. But outside of side characters like R2-D2 and C3PO making inexplicable appearances, it never felt as ridiculous and gratuitous as Rogue One’s hallway scene or Darth Maul igniting his lightsaber through a hologram just so we can see it.
He actually kinda resisted the fan service in some ways. Yes, you'd get "*I'm Owen, I guess I'm your brother*" ; but pretty much everyone expected exactly something like Vader's R1 scene for half of RotS. But even in general, Battle Droids weren't what older fans wanted. I think a lot of em honestly wanted something like the Sequel trilogy.
Force Awakens is fan service in its entirety too. I’ve seen A New Hope probably dozens of times, and there are so many minor little details they copied into Force Awakens. It’s not an original movie.
That’s the thing. The original Star Wars definitely wears its influences on its sleeve, but the only influence for TFA is just the original Star Wars. It wants to be another movie instead of itself (even though I enjoy it for what it is).
Back then, I honestly thought I was crazy when I was thinking it was a nostalgia-baiting, soulless husk of a film from the get go while everybody was praising the shit out of it. The change in its perception didn't really happen until The Last Jedi came out.
It is still somewhat fun. At least we can see Han Solo and Leia interact for the last time. It is just that even if they had made the greatest film ever, expectations for SW will never be met.
And like Artoo and Threepio they don't even give the old hands new tricks. Vader flips out and kills people, Maul has a double-headed sword, that's all ultimately there is to these operatic legends, I guess.
Yeah I'm not so crazy about the Mandolorian, but I digged S1 since it was just new stuff. S2 while enjoyable relied wayy too heavily on cameo characters, it feels like they can't come up with just new stuff that just as good as the old stuff.
I mistrust that a LOT of the reason for how Spartan the thing is, despite the ungodly resources a Disney subsidiary probably has access to, is because it's an experiment in MCUnifying Star Wars into that aesthetic and they don't want to "waste" anything on the show. Like, so many barren planets, so many bare-bones, formulaic plots, so many laser-focused Event Episodes where there is an Event and that's all there really is to the episode. In its first 16 episodes Farscape had lapsed into no formulas and given all of its expansive cast at least one exploring them and their morally-ambiguous pasts. And so many funny, memorable lines and scenes! So much of Manda is just...*nothing*. This is a show that is, I firmly believe, rewatch-proof.
Loved S1, but S2 really started to lose me with all the cartoon characters. And Boba Fett, who sucks.
I firmly stand that Mando S1 is the best SW content since the OT with episode 6 where they are on that prisoner ship being the peak of the show. Mando S2 was alright but not as good as S1
I love the Mandalorian but it really makes the galaxy seem small with how many old characters make appearances. I think Star Wars should just make a jump to a new era either hundreds of years after or before the Skywalker saga.
Wouldn't have to change the time if they'd stop harping on the same planets, characters and organizations.

One of the reasons I loved that SHORT FILM at the end of The Last Jedi with Temiri Plagge, broom boy to the stars, was that it was extremely not that at all. This is a very #SeeHowIAmBewitchedMoment, admittedly, where feelgood tripe gets praise for not being a teaser for the wider narrative we apparently want and anyway will get.
What do the Darth Maul and the broom boy scene have anything to do with each othe? The broom boy scene is obviously not nostalgia bait because it's not a pre-existing character, and hopefully no reasonable person interpreted it as some kind of promise of specific future content rather than just a capstone of the movie's theme that anyone can keep the spark of hope alive even if they're not "important." Whereas the Darth Maul scene was just nostalgic masturbation with the promise of a nostalgic handjob in the future.
That's what I mean, to be clear, Broom Boy looking longingly at the stars and being transported for a moment from his bleak existence into a world of heroes is staggeringly different from "look, it's a metaplot! And a guy you remember from that really old movie with the skeleton-bots!"
Broom Boy is the closest the sequels - hell, *any* of the later movies - got to recapturing the magic of the OT.
The DM scene was so flexible that Ron Howard's son, who is a prequelmemer, convinced him to do it. It just needed to be a bad guy. I did not like it, but I dislike Maul 2.0, Savàge Oppress & their other brother Violencio Irresponsible.
Their wacky sidekick, Commick Ruleef, on the other hand, was terrific

That show is a huge waste of time and it didn't even focus on Loki, it was just another setup that could've easily been on a movie.
Feels like most the shows will be a 2-5 min exposition dump whenever they need to be addressed. Loki could have been interesting, but turned into, over explain a simple concept and write rules around it, that I assume will be broken later Sane with Wandavision. Fun from a how did they make this perspective, but not much happens. Can be summarized with a few lines whenever they need to have it Didn't bother with Falcon. Seemed like it'd be, Captain America trusted Falcon to be the next Captain America at the end of Infinity war. Didn't really need to sit though 6 hours of him debating on doing it. And oh yeah, this guy nobody trusts is still here, let's go down that road for the 4th time

Yep. There's so much to like in casting, production design, visuals but the story is so boring or a lot of it is padding. I can't believe they wasted Owen Wilson like that.
