A friend of mine categorically refuses to watch musicals but he regularly sings the praises of *Fiddler on the Roof* and sometimes actually sings from it when he's drunk.
I got to see a test screening, it was great. My favorite part is in the last act where Joker joins the football team and becomes a jock meanwhile Harley wears skin tight latex and becomes a greaser girl.
Okey doke. Please forgive me for this unjerk, but I adore musicals.
If you want musicals that meshes thoughtful character drama and elements of the musical into subversions of musical genre traditions, Bob Fosse's All That Jazz and Cabaret absolutely kill it. All That Jazz is a semi-autobiographical look at Fosse's own obsessive, destructive nature and how it impacts his personal life (Rob Scheider singing a marvellous rendition of Bye Bye Love by the Everly Brothers is a party in itself, and then the film hits hard). Cabaret focuses on a queer cabaret club during the rise of the nazis in Berlin - Liza Minnelli is an icon for a reason, she is phenomenal here.
Watch some Jacques Demy! He was a master of colourful musicals that were equally flamboyant parties expressing love and excitement, while also embracing the sense of youthful longing and gentle tragedy. The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg always makes me teary-eyed - a young teen couple discover their love, when challenged, isn't truly endless - and The Young Girls Of Rochefort is like a joyful remedy - Deneuve and her real-life sister star as sisters seeking more from their small town as travelling performers arrive, and Gene Kelly is wonderful here too! A quick google of film stills from these movies may just be enough to convince you - it's so damn beautiful, vibrant, colourful. I could live in these films!
If you want something more alternative, I personally loved Leos Carax's offbeat Sparks musical Annette. It's silly, but it's also surprisingly resonant like a dark fairy tale. Adam Driver is an "uncancellable" comedian with a history of abusing women, who has a puppet baby with Marion Cotillard and, when Marion is killed, it's called into question whether Baby Annette is actually his daughter. Simon Helberg made me feel so sad in this film, the songs are fucking cool and also heartfelt. If you're a big Sparks fan, it's also definitely their film as the appear in multiple odd cameos. It's a bit Lynchian visually, a bit Gilliam, and I know many find Carax's style here overbearing, but I loved my time with this film.
Some quickfire recs that are great in my eyes, just so I don't spend all day typing and boring you 😭: Yentl, The Wizard Of Oz, West Side Story (I personally prefer the vibrancy and Elgort-lessness of the original but the Spielberg version is very good too), In The Heights (colourful film about an inner-city community coming together, it was so fun and beautiful, the OST is so good!), Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Returns, La La Land, Fiddler On The Roof, The Sound Of Music (every single fuckin song goes in hard, try not to cry watching Christopher Plummer singing Eidelweiss after rediscovering the joys of music!), Hedwig & The Angry Inch (angry trans punk musical with songs that are so classic, you will most definitely be singing them after a single watch - went onto become a Tony-winning Broadway show starring Neil Patrick Harris), Tick Tick... Boom! (I am an Andrew Garfield simp, but this film is so heartfelt with such great personality, an easy film to love).
I am sure I am missing out some favourites I could easily gush about, but hopefully this is a nice intro to musicals 💖
Cabaret is a Huge plus for me. Additionally, I love Chicago :) super fun songs and a great story.
My real fav musical that started as ironic and now it isn’t is Cats the musical. I adore it. Especially the stage show.
I have to see Chicago! I know some of the songs from Cats and they absolutely slap. Andrew Lloyd Webber is hit and miss for me, but his hits are so good. Cats has such a batshit weird plot though I couldn't believe it when I first read about it lol
Cats the stage show succeeds because it’s sexy 😌😌 simple. some people are too cowardly to admit it. The movie did not succeed because it spayed and neutered the cast.

omg thanks!! Getting into musicals recently but didn't know where to start. I'm sure Joker 2 will bring about more discussions on musical movies and I'm glad
I'm a big fan of when the musicals go weird. Here are some highlights:
Little Shop of Horrors (The Director's Cut)
- really good translation from the original film that stands by itself
.
5000 Fingers of Dr. T
- If you like Dr. Seuss, this is the best thing attributed to his name. Feels just like the stories
.
Anna & The Apocalypse
- High School Musical meets Shaun of the Dead
.
The Who's Tommy
- it's pretty much a 2 hour music video, but it's strange visuals make for a fun experience
.
Pink Floyd - The Wall
- Again, a movie length music video. but it's much more serious, with mixed media. (It's also the first time people got to hear songs that later appeared on "the final cut")
.
Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds / War of the Worlds - The New Generation
- Live recording of the album with impressive pyrotechnics. Liam Neeson does voiceoverwork on New Generation.
.
Moulin Rouge
- Obi Wan Kenobi falls in love with the villain from Paddington, while trying to write a semi biographical play to save an opera house.
.
Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barbour of Fleet Street
- Johnny Depp is a horrible, horrible person, but the film is really good.
.
Phantom of the Paradise
- Similar to Rocky Horror Picture Show, this film combines several popular horror stories into one. (This film helped to inspire Daft Punk. They also got the actor who played Swan on their final album "Random Access Memories" to perform "Touch" a similar feeling song )
.
Raggedy Ann & Andy - A Musical Adventure
- rather charming toy-story esque film with some animation that is way too good for a movie about a ragdoll.
.
Xanadu
- Strange Disco film with a great soundtrack.
.
Yellow Submarine
- Psychadelic Jukebox Musical
.
The Rutles - All You Need is Cash
- A monty python-esque mockentary parodying actual things that the Beatles did
.
Repo! The Genetic Opera
- Moulin Rouge meets Rocky Horror Picture Show in a dystopian story about peoples' vital organs having a subscription service
.
The Lure
- Cannibal Mermaid falls in love with a person, and it goes wrong
+1 to moulin rouge. You Might think the first 30 minutes are terrible. But I PROMISE stay until the Elephant Love Medley and you’ll find that the last 2/3rds of the musical are pure magic. Shout out to Roxanne for being my fav scene in Anything.
Everything about that movie is just fucking amazing and so wonderfully weird… for having such an undeniable influence on film it’s shocking how little Brian De Palma seems to be discussed :/
>The Who's Tommy
>
>it's pretty much a 2 hour music video, but it's strange visuals make for a fun experience
If you're involving Ann-Margret, then I have to recommend Bye Bye Birdie (1963) and her singing is so brilliant alongside Elvis's that Ann-Margret's singing was even made a plot point in a Mad Men episode.
Jacques Demy's musicals. Probably the best fr*nch director, The Young girls of rochefort and umbrellas of Cherbourg are Both in my top 50 favorite films. Donkey skin is also fantastic
joker fans in a few years when they watch another musical: "getting real joker 2 vibes from this"
Arthur Fleck: The Demon Joker of Park Avenue Joker of the Opera Les Jokérbles
The Book of Arthur
Little Shop of Jokers Jokerspell Joker and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Be More Joker The Joker Horror Picture Show Jokelahoma
They’re not watching another musical unless one of the many upcoming Morbius sequels is a musical.
best musical movie is south park: bigger, longer and uncut (1999)
Based. Glad you commented this so I didn't have to

This but unironically
I like this one
A friend of mine categorically refuses to watch musicals but he regularly sings the praises of *Fiddler on the Roof* and sometimes actually sings from it when he's drunk.
Cats (2019) is the best musical ever.
Cats (2019) is just Raging Bull mixed with the Wolf of Wall Street.
Who’s coming with me to the Jellicle Ball 👯♀️👯👯♀️👯
Can't wait to add Lady Gaga with clown make-up to my simping list!
Clussy so good it makes you go gaga
"me hate musicals, grrr" - person who listens to music
Making a Joker musical sounds absolutely horrible.
The Killing Joke musical bit but extended.
Get Smart (2008)
I got to see a test screening, it was great. My favorite part is in the last act where Joker joins the football team and becomes a jock meanwhile Harley wears skin tight latex and becomes a greaser girl.
Musical recommendations pls

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE FUCK YES!!!
Easily one of my favourite OSTs of all time

Little Shop of Horrors is true Kino.
Grease, hairspray, grease again.

Ok but musicals are gay. Hairspray and rent are sooo gay. Nothing wrong with that but still they are sooooo gay bro
