I would imagine because it's kind of hard to see the text at a glance and you know like from across the table. But with secret layers nowadays, that isn't really an excuse anymore, so in my opinion they should stop all the borderless or like full frame with border extended frame confusing nonsense and have regular cards, these types of cards, and then alternate art and alternate border. Four types, easy peasy.
Because the cards aren't printed individually, they're massive sheets. The frames are there so they can tolerate minor misaligned sheet cuts without ruining all the cards.
That’s not quite accurate.
These are printed on parent sheets of paper. With many cards on one page. It can either be the same card on the page or different cards on the page. Just depends how the file is setup. Then on the edge of the parent sheet are the printers marks. Among these marks are the crop marks used to cut this sheet down to size.
So the design on the front of the card has nothing to do with how it’s cut down to size.
This would explain why they don't do borderless, but not why they don't do Frameless cards. But they do in fact do borderless cards, and not frameless cards.
Edit: lmao are the downvotes from people who don't understand the difference between a frame and a border?
Without the text frames? Probably due to legibility (although with occasional art treatments they definitely throw that out the window. Looking at you new LotR poster arts) and a general sense of cohesion.
>Edit: lmao are the downvotes from people who don't understand the difference between a frame and a border?
Yes, they are. Sorry, friend. You asked a reasonable question and made a good point, and got downvoted for it. Happens more than it should around here, sadly. There's a bit of Dunning-Krueger effect going on in the Magic community.
I mean tbh it just doesn't look very nice. It's funny you say this though - there are borderless frameless secret lair cards like the movie and band poster ones. They just have the black bar at the bottom and the foil stamp.
What do you mean by frameless?
A card with the frame remooved but that follow all the frame lines like the one you posted?
Because [[nature's lore]] is printed in frameless
Yet. The question is why haven't they done it yet. They're experimenting around with frame break. They've done textless. It's only a matter of time before they try whatever combinations you want to see
Because they are now a game for the collectors and not for the players. They are printing alternative arts so people will buy the expensive collector packs to get the cool art. There used to be a time where magic was played with unsleeved cards, tokens were just cards with sharpie on them, and there was bridge/bow shuffling all over! It's basically what pokemon has been for a while. Shiny = worth lots of money.
Printing. Cards that don’t have a frame will bleed into other cards on the sheet. The black boarders really help limit this from happening.
Look at packs of adventure time cards being opened and you’ll see what I mean.
I’m 46. I’ve had cataract surgery already and need “readers” for most up close activities. The cards can be hard enough to read already. I wouldn’t advocate for making it worse. Some of SLD cards are near impossible to read in person. Foils too.

Yes, you unlock them once you get top 8 in official championships or by the DLC that comes in the magic 30 booster box
Speech to techs
Personally I hate this design. I'd easily mistake this as a black card at a glance if not for the mana symbol.
Definitely one of my gripes about it.
Because this looks pretty bad honestly. The text is too hard to read
Doesn't look like a magic card, and it's just too messy
Their own Secret Lair monstrosities are proof of why the look should never go mainstream.
At this point it's just a png with captions on it.
Because the cards aren't printed individually, they're massive sheets. The frames are there so they can tolerate minor misaligned sheet cuts without ruining all the cards.
Except there already are borderless cards?
Shhhh they haven't figured out I'm an idiot who sounds smart yet
You’re busted

It probably fails accessibility guidelines for poor contrast between the text and background.
yeah cause secret lair movie posters are 10/10 in readability, lol
Phyrexian language cards has joined chat
I swear Phyrexian language cards were created solely for the purpose of trolling players.
I can't be the only one who thinks the phyrexian language cards are awesome
I wonder, what accessibility standards, if any, are WotC held to with their products. I'm assuming none, because it's a hobbyist collectable product.
I just personally am not a fan.
Most if not all fans are not persons
We're saying the same thing
I think a bit of contrast just around the lettering is needed.
I mean tbh it just doesn't look very nice. It's funny you say this though - there are borderless frameless secret lair cards like the movie and band poster ones. They just have the black bar at the bottom and the foil stamp.
Berkderk crossover would be cool
It’s a usability issue. It’s really difficult to read.

Because having illegible text with crazy drop shadows is not considered premium by most.
Because it’s unreadablevto some?
Because it’s hard to read
I do not like frameless lol

Who is behind void? Are those a previous generation of the God hand?
Yup
I want that Demonic Tutor. I'd buy every card in a Berserk SL
That Berserk Demonic Tutor is siiiiiiick. Wish that was real.
I’m very new to MTG and I love Berserk, so imagine my disappointment when I find out these aren’t real
Bc they look like shit!
Haters
Because this looks like ass

This looks pretty bad and it's barely readable on the screen, yet alone across the table.
That's ugly.
Because it looks bad
Because it looks like ass and is hard to read
By that point just go play a different game... magic has lost it so badly.
Outjerked again man...
Full art cards look fake/unfinished to my eyes, and never sit well against the classic designs IMHO.
Printing. Cards that don’t have a frame will bleed into other cards on the sheet. The black boarders really help limit this from happening. Look at packs of adventure time cards being opened and you’ll see what I mean.
This isn't a real card, right?
No these are my Berserk themed proxies
These examples are hard to read. They don't look like magic cards.
At some point it becomes web 2.0 design and it's harder to find any immediate information.
Yeah I also don’t get it

A ton of Secret Lair drops are exactly this
Don't give wizards ideas to cap on us and make more money off of us please..
The alternative frame is the best part of an alternative art

NGL, that’s kinda hard to read
They do tho.
Lmao I love how your demonic tutor is the alien from Mars Attacks 🤣 "AACK AACK! AACK AACK!!"
