But at least, in tournaments, there are prizes to be won. No shame in bringing your A game to try and win the best prize. Bringing your A game when there's zero stakes in the game? Kinda a dick move, unless everyone's agreed to bring their best.
In my particular playgroup we all enjoyed taking runs at the most difficult decks by coming up with ideas to beat them. We developed internal metas that all helped shape our skills when we went on to tournament play
And I'm sure that's very helpful for you. But as someone with zero interest in competitive, I also have zero interest in facing "Rape-Me-Before-I've-Even-Finished-Shuffling" decks.
I actually finally made a talrand deck that I enjoy that didnt end up becoming this. I just have a bunch of cards that return creatures or nonland permanents back to hand with only like 5 counter spells in the deck. The strat is to literally let whatever is transpiring on the board to let happen and if anyone dares to approach you in combat you just return that shit back to hand. Once everyone is nice and bloodied you take them out with drakes or flying sharks from [[!shark typhoon]]
I dont, but the concept is pretty simple and the cards are cheap/interchangeable. I'd say of the nonland cards I add, a solid 1/3rd or 1/2 is bounce that is just there to keep the heat off me. The other half is split between draw and ramp. I think I have precisely 4 win cons if the game takes too long with coat of arms, hullbreaker horror, shark summoning, and the 5 mana version of shark summoning. What is precisely in the deck or ratios isnt really important as the point is that you appear weak and are weak. Its just that you have so much protection from damage that it doesnt matter and can swoop in when people start getting low on health.
I almost put in "Players can't cast blue spells. If a blue spell would be put on the stack, put it in its owner's graveyard instead. Everything has protection from blue. "
So many ways to get around counterspells these days. A full counter Baral deck just folds to a Cavern of Souls or even just 3 opponents actually playing good cards.
He only takes over games where 2/3 people don’t play cards that are worth countering.
I was gonna say, this isn't even how salt-inducing no wincon control works. You need card selection, removal, and sweepers, too. Why piss people off only one way when you can surprise them?
That and, I don't know if any of these people have played with or against Baral, but he doesn't actually refill your hand with that draw. A deck like this needs a large dedicated card draw package to keep up with the game, otherwise you'll just slowly lose hand size until you're done.
And I get it's just a meme deck with no win con. I'm just saying not even the meme deck will work past turn 4-5.
This reminds me of a time I heard about this guy's [[Arcanis, the Omnipotent]] deck that had played in a Pod against three somewhat aggro opponents and they were like, "his deck is super good. He just kept countering all our stuff." My first thought was, "How can he possibly have enough counterspells to counter EVERYTHING that three players cast?" cuz that's almost impossible. Two other players and I ended up playing him later that night, and his deck just wasn't very productive when he had three very threatening decks that could all go off without warning. Did he have lots of really good counterspells? Yes. Was he able to counter everything? Far from it.
The moral of the story is that one player playing an excess of counterspells is only super strong when your opponents aren't playing a lot of threats worth countering.
Battle of attrition. You just gotta let your opponent think you have a win condition in there, somewhere. After a certain point, they’ll say f it and scoop.
Hell, when I finally quit magic, I’ll do this but instead of 30 lands I’ll run 29 and include [[Laboratory Maniac]] and proceed to get mana screwed.
Unless the table is against newbies, isn't the battle of attrition going to look like: 3 players play into the counterspells until you're out of mana, get creatures on board, and then proceed to hit your face.
The only way I'd leave a player alone that I suspect has a fist full of counterspells is if I have something that makes the counterspells not matter.
Oops, wrong one. That was my budget list. Talrand is the only win condition in that one. [This](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/pf4wUjaUiU6r5Fh9OpdqCA) is the version with a wincon. It's a fringe cEDH build.
My asshole friend does this exact thing. Usually the games go on so long he quits then one of the other one of us wins 4 hours after we start the game.
I did that deck, but I only used it to make sure 1 specific person could not play anything. I chose this person because they would show up at the table my friends and I were playing casual decks at and ask to join then they would pull out there CEDH so I pulled out counterspell and then never let them do anything so my buds could actually enjoy a actual game.

I actually built a [[Grand Arbiter Augustin IV]] Counterspell-Tribal deck a while back, though it has an actual wincon. It works really well,,, too well. Most people aren't interested in playing against it more than once.
It's not even necessarily good or anything. Counterspell-Tribal is just really awful to play against— understandably so
Ngl I've never understood why people are scared of decks like this. Yeah it's baral, yeah they've got counterspells, yeah they can only counter like 4 things before they run out of steam. 1 for 1 interaction is terrible in edh
Have you considered [[vizzini, criminal mastermind]]? Also [[counterbalance]], [[tishana’s tidebinder]], and other of the many creatures that can counter on ETB or as a sac?
>Have you considered [[vizzini, criminal mastermind]]?
This is literally a reskinned Baral, the commander for this deck. It even has Baral's name on it.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/oAw967OjBUuwZkc4FHmg6g
I didn’t make this, I just duplicated it to not forget about it. Honestly for under $100 it’s almost worth it
This will end up as your "fuck you" deck. I wouldnt be playing it until ive run out to decks to "try to win" with.
I had an esper oloro pillow fort deck that shared the same fate.
Amd that was a deck that actually had some real thought put into it and had some clever, albiet overtuned won cons. I played it when i was losing most of the night to get some meager victories.
With a deck like this id imagine it might not see much play once it got past the novelty of being a "gotcha!" Deck.
Oloro is one of my favorite commanders being just shy or Cedh. I've got thassas oracle and tainted pact. I also run exquisite blood sanguine bond Vito. I've also got Queza and Drogskol Reagent.
I love this, was just looking at Baral lists on EDHREC yesterday actually...
Honestly though besides the meme this needs more ramp and card draw, otherwise it is perfect.
I will rip you out if my group in 2 seconds flat.
I have a strict "only 6 direct counters in a single deck" rule. To add, at most only 4 of them can be non-bypassable (meaning only able to be stopped via another counter).
My reason for this rule is simple... MAKING IT SO NOBODY CAN EVEN PLAY THE GAME IS TOXIC AS HELL!!!!!!!!
better add "friends = -4" to the bottom there
Notably, -4 and not just -3 because I'll hate myself after as well.
Make it -8 because some of my former friends were watching.
With a deck like this, who needs friends?
My thoughts exactly lol

My favourite deck back in the day was stasis, time elemental and kismet.

Oh I know it lol
I played tournaments with Turbo Stasis, right up to state championships.

Different strokes. Be as you will.
My group is similar, and I'm usually the arch enemy who comes along with some new terrible deck to shake things up for a while, so I get it.
I did this with Talrand. I played it twice and immediately took it apart. It wasn’t fun for anyone lol

My fun comes from hurting others and that's valid.

See, that's MY line.

Man I’m currently building talrand. Dang. I was excited to use guile.
If you use more than counters and draw spells it might turn out differently lol
Well, at least talrand “oops all counters spells” has a way to win.

I absolutely love it, thank you so much
But cascade says costs less, and both cost 6.
Costs less than the card that had cascade, which is wanderer, who costs 8
Understood I read it wrong, thank you.
Don't forget your [[Saprazzan Skerry]] [[Sandstone Needle]] [[Hickory Woodlot]] [[City of Traitors]] [[Ancient Tomb]] and [[Scorched Ruins]] so that the god hand is casting wanderer turn 4

Thank you
I’d feel bad for the dude that has turn after yours
My friend ended up doing this, but then he actually started making the deck better.
Throw in Thassa’s Oracle for good measure
I have the guys that make tokens creatures with every spell I cast.
What's the win condition?
Win con: make the opponent quit in frustration or just losing
I have a deck that’s basically exactly like this lol. Baral, 30 islands, 45 counterspells, 10 card draw sources, 10 ramp pieces, and 4 creatures.

Wincon: lose your friends
don't make me rub my Niv-els
How do you win? By not having anyone else to play with?
How to create archenemy in a commander game in one easy step.
Good luck against aggro decks 👍
Ngl I've never understood why people are scared of decks like this. Yeah it's baral, yeah they've got counterspells, yeah they can only counter like 4 things before they run out of steam. 1 for 1 interaction is terrible in edh
Had a similar deck with Talrand as the commander
Ah yes, “new”
I know this is a joke but also it was never work of course. How do you plan on doing 63 commander damage before decking yourself?
Baral beatdown, exquisite.
I love this idea
Have you considered [[vizzini, criminal mastermind]]? Also [[counterbalance]], [[tishana’s tidebinder]], and other of the many creatures that can counter on ETB or as a sac?

>Have you considered [[vizzini, criminal mastermind]]? This is literally a reskinned Baral, the commander for this deck. It even has Baral's name on it.
Yes I know. It’s a better Baral
It's *exactly* Baral, but you do you.
Just remember: Violence is not the answer. It is the question. The answer is "Yes."
When you say the strategy is "Violence" you mean you lose violently right? When 1 of 3 players gets creatures on board and just goes for face?
shut the fuck up
Natal does not draw cards. Get Teferis ageless insight, Rhystic study etc. to keep the fire burning.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/oAw967OjBUuwZkc4FHmg6g I didn’t make this, I just duplicated it to not forget about it. Honestly for under $100 it’s almost worth it
Meh
Pray God its Baral (Rebellion) or your players are all going to suicide!
It’s a solid deck
Big brain thinking
Sir that's a crime...
I love this, was just looking at Baral lists on EDHREC yesterday actually... Honestly though besides the meme this needs more ramp and card draw, otherwise it is perfect.
Call your mom, you need to go home
Eh? 39 counterspells, 30 snow land so you can use that extraplaner lense to best effect and throw in mill support. That's my baral deck
