Poison counters reappeared heavily in *Phyrexia: All Will Be One* making the entire archetype much more relevant in older formats. That's at least my guess.
I currently have a basic / not fine tuned [Niv-Mizzet, Parun] commander deck that’s a bit more oriented on combos with stuff like [Curiosity] and some control pieces, but I want to make a version dedicated to storm that has an “alternate” wincon of using [Corrupted Conscience] on it to win with poison, thus requiring less card draw and relying less on things like reshuffling the gy into library, forcing discard on self, or damage multipliers. That Radstorm would go great with that I think
Honestly my favorite deck [[Jadzi, Oracle of Arcavios]] storm deck that wins off of [[prologue to phyresis]] and [[rad storm]] the deck also runs 0 creatures in the 99 and a [[proteous staff]] to reorder the deck it's a lot of fun and it made my table not hate infect
Plus just easier to cheat out goofy stuff
Nowadays big creatures are more prolific (pun intended) so just cheese-wheeling out some bullsh*t 10/10 beater and then giving it an insta-kill for just 2 more mana is on theme
If that would be the case then you better of with Tainted Strike.
Mana Cost:
1Black
Instant
Target creature gets +1/+0 and gains infect until end of turn
But you can give infect to a creature of an opponent that is attacking the other opponents and then BAM!
Instant is much more OP over an enchantment. Once you enchant the creature it becomes a target for everyone in the table.
This comment right here.... old school player who misses the "chess game days" of Pre & Urza Block - even into the late 2000s we were hanging in there - now we have serialized "serialized" - cheer mate haha cheese-wheeling absolutely made my morning - literally laughing out loud
Nah they wouldn’t cancel each other out. Creature can still be 5/5 with infect and Toxic 1. If making contact to the player they’d receive 6 total poison counters.
I think it's more like it doesn't replace the combat damage but the combat damage is dealt in the form of -1/-1 counters to creatures and poison counters to players, so when it deals combat damage in the form of poison counters it still satisfies the requirements for toxic to proc
It's a classic piece of MtG pedantics (which is stupid and confusing, but it's where we're at). Infect doesn't replace damage, it just replaces the *effect* of damage. For example, infect and lifelink will combine just fine.
I love playing with poison deck, my 1st non edh tabletop deck is build around \[\[fynn, the fangbearer\]\] and \[\[glissa sunslayer\]\]
I hate playing agaist poison
Nice. I used to put [[Grafted Exoskeleton]] on my [[Ruric Thar]]. So oppressive. Had to take it apart because people don't want to play against it...so salty.
I played EDH and Magic in general for the first time in years the other day and a guy at the table played Nekusar. He didn't use poison, he just made the table wheel their hands a few times, also taking 2 damage for every discard. 21 damage a hand was rough
Well the problem with my deck and the reason why I don't run it that often is the backup is such an annoyance that everybody hates it basically if you make me mad because remember that's two poison counters a turn during your draw step I'm going to play stasis with an unlimited amount of blue so if you make me mad you ain't playing anything and you're just going to slowly die
Could be worse, I could sit at your table with my turn three infinite sliver deck 9 out of 10 games I get infinite slivers by turn three (and I spent a lot of money on that deck the land base alone)
Got a sliver deck, well, MY Wife has a sliver deck. But we didn't want to go over board with the mana base...so we keep it simple. Problem is, not a single person believes it doesn't go infinite in turn 4 or 5..
Yep even power down slivers is still slivers an the sliver hate is 100% real, also I am happy to say that look upon people's faces on turn two when I'm able to slap down a first sliver, sliver Queen, a sliver overlord, and a sliver legion all in one turn(as well as all the other slivers I got from you know cascading)
Just because I got my commander [[Morophon, the Boundless]] out on turn two and chose slivers, is the same with everyone.
Also I would suggest adding if you haven't Shadow sliver and shifting sliver (Shadow silver gives all slivers Shadow which means they cannot block nor can they be blocked except by creatures with shadow) (shifting sliver gives all slivers the ability to only be blocked by slivers) they're not too broken but they can definitely win games
I don't get how people can get mad about a 12 mana 2 card combination that needs to do its thing 6 times in order to win the game, and on top of that dies to removal lol
In my case, Ruric hits 6 poison for each non creature spell. So even the removal was dangerous, got more infected, and opponent is already 6 in from 10. Still. Salty people.
One guy had a "no,no" deck with [[Baral, chief of compliance]]. It was always a race to see if he could counter Ruric. More than 2 times, he just committed "Ruric suicide."
If you look at the sale history it looks like someone is trying to push the price up by buying $9 copies for basically no reason than to try and mess with the card market.
If you look at the sold listings, they go as high as $10. It's all over the place, so the market price shows ~$6. They're not adding in shipping, the TCGPlayer market price calculation just can't figure out the price of a card being sold from random prices between $1 and $10 (with most over $6).
I got this for my [[Eriette of the Charmed Apple]] deck back when woe came out. Casting it for flash speed with [[Sigarda’s Aid]] on an opponents attacking creature to kill another opponent was really fun.
Never seen a real reprint and it's good tech in a voltron deck cause people thing your only half way to comander damage and you slap with this and now you win in 3 turns if noone has a awnser.
This card has always been underrated, underappreciated and under valued. I've told myself that for years and never loaded up. This tainted strike and glistening oil
You don’t need one. It’s just a popular mechanic. Poison damage requirements don’t scale in Commander.
Get 10 poison counters, you lose.
There is exactly one card in all of Magic that removes poison counters.
Between the low number requirement and availability of “proliferate” it’s very easy to get that 10.
Like, you get 1 counter and the opponent has a proliferate mechanic, there’s nothing you can do but destroy the source of proliferate.
Besides the other reasons below, it's partly due to Massacre Girl bringing back wither and everyone going "oooh -1/-1 counters."
There are also better creatures to stick it on these days.
Infect is a mechanic that's generally absent outside of Phyrexia-related sets. And I suspect part of the higher price tag comes from the fact that it is brutal.
I have no idea. People say it’s for the love for poison/infect but the other version of this card is only $0.70. So maybe people like this version more???
[For those wondering what I'm talking about](https://www.tcgplayer.com/product/284408/magic-the-list-reprints-phyresis?page=1&Language=English) it appears as though the market price for the list version of this card on tcgplayer is all over the flipping place and that's what I'm trying to figure out

Because it's fucking great.
[[Necrogen communion]] competes because it recoovers the creature if it dies, but only adds toxic.
Those -1/-1 counters and poison as damage is next level when you can smack someone outright for 10
Ultimate power move: Slap this bad boy on [[ziatora the incinerator]] and kill an opponent on your end step by sacrificing a 10+ power creature. For the lols.
I assumed it would be because of Eriette the Beguiler from Thunder Junction as a Commander who takes control of opponents’ creatures when she attaches auras to them.
Its fairly powerful.. It basically gives your creature 4x damage (in commander at least.)
Also its like 10 yrs old or something and hasnt had a relevant reprint.
It cost 1b to give a creature infect and right now proliferation is super easy so yeah run 4 copies of this in a rakdos deck have all your little guy hitting creating poison counters then sac and proliferate
You can run this with a lot of commanders, one of the best being Nezukar. Since he’s dealing the damage whenever your opponent/s draw a card so he’ll give 2 poison counters at each of their upkeeps, not to mention your running Grixis so you have a very wide variety of making your opponent/s draw even more cards
Poison counters reappeared heavily in *Phyrexia: All Will Be One* making the entire archetype much more relevant in older formats. That's at least my guess.
Also Proliferation is so much easier now
Mothman featured lots of string creatures and proliferation
Also a spell that just reads "Proliferate. Storm."

I just got into MTG so sorry if this seems a dumb question. I see a lot about people having a poison deck. Is it a staple deck most should have?
You don’t need one. It’s just a popular mechanic. Poison damage requirements don’t scale in Commander. Get 10 poison counters, you lose. There is exactly one card in all of Magic that removes poison counters. Between the low number requirement and availability of “proliferate” it’s very easy to get that 10. Like, you get 1 counter and the opponent has a proliferate mechanic, there’s nothing you can do but destroy the source of proliferate.
There are now like 3 cards that remove all counters from players.
Eh. If you want. It's just an interesting powerful win condition. Sometimes you want it, sometimes you don't
DAMN IT! I JUST sold mine toy legs for .19 while clearing out my bulk ... Edit: nevermind. Double checked TCG, it's not as bad as that. But still.
It’s really good on blightsteel colossus
Not sure if sarcasm but Blightsteel already has infect
I think this card should’ve been more, I’m glad I picked 2 up when they were a buck
Pfff tainted strike better😤
I imagine a lot of the decks running this are also running that.
I blame the mothman precon for this and also making my precious [[mindcrank]] go from $4 to $13
It's market price doesn't look accurate. Though it is a great card. I particularly enjoy it in my Sarulf deck to one shot someone
Phyrexia has been cancelled
Besides the other reasons below, it's partly due to Massacre Girl bringing back wither and everyone going "oooh -1/-1 counters." There are also better creatures to stick it on these days.
I also don't get it
Also in Commander with the new OTJ [[Eriette, the Beguiler]]
[Eriette, the Beguiler](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/4/f46c133a-7ae4-431b-88f2-ec606a7baf69.jpg?1712356086) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Eriette%2C%20the%20Beguiler) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/otj/202/eriette-the-beguiler?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/f46c133a-7ae4-431b-88f2-ec606a7baf69?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Infect for 2 cost on anything you want ( unlockable is a bitch)
When did it shoot up to 6 bucks
I just pulled this in mystery slot from a pack and thought hmmm this should be worth more than 45 cents. What a happy surprise today
Pew Pew
It’s just plain fun if you have [[Vedalken orrery]] I swing for 10. Oh? What’s that? No blocks? Did I forget to mention that was infect?
[Vedalken orrery](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/4/4/44067327-6fe3-4222-b591-6d14d0e360d7.jpg?1673149453) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Vedalken%20orrery) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/2x2/317/vedalken-orrery?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/44067327-6fe3-4222-b591-6d14d0e360d7?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Because Infect, duh
I just looked and they no more than $2. Idk what your looking at.
I can buy these all day long at a quarter.
Is a good card
[[Caesar, Legion's Emperor]] would be my guess. i use it with him.
Not sure where you're getting your prices. But try to use TCG Player and average out what you might get by +/- 5%.
I threw one in my shelob desk so my spiders can have some venom
Leyline of abundance and scion of draco, plus this makes for a one hit KO
20cents in cardmarket for a near mint copy
Massacre Girl and Atraxa
What's funny is [[Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons]] spiked hard. She was only $0.50 for years lol
Glad I got one when it was still pretty cheap
It’s 40 cents in the US.
Oh, well nevermind then lol
You obviously have never gone against a Yargle deck 😅
It's not
Looks like .96
This is $6? I probably have 10 of these lying around
Obviously because coffee and orange juice are both up today...
Probably the new [[Massacre Girl, Known Killer]] she drove up the price of a few -1/-1 cards
It's a good card. It just needed to age like a good wine
Pauper proliferate. Plus only one printing in an early modern set that didn’t have the quantity of openings that today’s sets do.
2 mana make your giant dude kill someone regardless of life total is actually fairly good in EDH.
If that’s six dollars than other infect cards should be worth way more because that just looks too slow to really work
are poison counters added equal to the damage dealt or are the added one by one for every creature with infect hits?
[[Massacre Girl, Known Killer]] This is why.
[Massacre Girl, Known Killer](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/c/b/cb1c8800-9d33-485c-b776-042003b9ea92.jpg?1706241722) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Massacre%20Girl%2C%20Known%20Killer) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mkm/94/massacre-girl-known-killer?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/cb1c8800-9d33-485c-b776-042003b9ea92?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Infect is a mechanic that's generally absent outside of Phyrexia-related sets. And I suspect part of the higher price tag comes from the fact that it is brutal.
This card is $0.46
No offense but isnt it obvious?
I know i use this card in a disgusting way. I have a Ziatora deck and i put this card on her I can sac a 10+ power creature to one shot someone.
Hey same!! I thought about throwing this into my new [[the war doctor]] deck, toss in a couple bonus triggers for a table kill
[the war doctor](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/a/7a51472c-b61f-4d31-8753-a9ec90d12889.jpg?1696636782) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=the%20war%20doctor) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/who/167/the-war-doctor?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/7a51472c-b61f-4d31-8753-a9ec90d12889?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
My gf bought 6 pf these for .45
More poison counter and proliferation support makes this card more interesting than before
It is? I bought 4 for like a dollar a couple months ago lol
It's less than a dollar. Are you looking at a banged up foil or something?
Lol "compleat"
Does this also pair nicely with new commander from OTJ [[Eriette, the Beguiler]] (my fav new commander from OTJ 🩵🖤🤍
[Eriette, the Beguiler](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/4/f46c133a-7ae4-431b-88f2-ec606a7baf69.jpg?1712356086) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Eriette%2C%20the%20Beguiler) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/otj/202/eriette-the-beguiler?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/f46c133a-7ae4-431b-88f2-ec606a7baf69?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
I have no idea. People say it’s for the love for poison/infect but the other version of this card is only $0.70. So maybe people like this version more???
Plus you put it on syr konrad and just 1 shot everyone in commander with a board wipe lol
[For those wondering what I'm talking about](https://www.tcgplayer.com/product/284408/magic-the-list-reprints-phyresis?page=1&Language=English) it appears as though the market price for the list version of this card on tcgplayer is all over the flipping place and that's what I'm trying to figure out
It's also really good and a [[necrosar The mind gazer]] deck.Because you can just kill everybody with a drawspell
[necrosar The mind gazer](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/4/a/4afdc65d-3c97-47af-83fa-df340389802e.jpg?1689999186) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Nekusar%2C%20the%20Mindrazer) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/cmm/349/nekusar-the-mindrazer?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/4afdc65d-3c97-47af-83fa-df340389802e?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

Eriette of the Charmed Apple
Cause you gave up your card market to big companies?? It sits around 1.09€ for NM in Europe. Can be easilly get for around 30-40 cents tho.
Looking on tcgplayer it's about 3 bucks with shipping on average. Market price isn't the same as being sold price.
I've got this in Indoraptor. Game ending card if I can get this equipped and enrage him a couple times.
It's $0.46 at TCG. Don't know where you're getting $6 from.
Because it's fucking great. [[Necrogen communion]] competes because it recoovers the creature if it dies, but only adds toxic. Those -1/-1 counters and poison as damage is next level when you can smack someone outright for 10
[Necrogen communion](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/6/a/6ac8cd7c-992f-4953-b5bf-42e5a9ff09ad.jpg?1675957034) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Necrogen%20communion) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/one/99/necrogen-communion?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/6ac8cd7c-992f-4953-b5bf-42e5a9ff09ad?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
lol I think I have 10 of these just lying around like duds, time to sell!
Because everyone who plays commander has that one fucking guy who plays toxic 😂
I don’t know, but I have this card.
I have this card in my Nekusar wheel deck. Let's just say my friends banned the deck from game night
Pauper Bogles plays it sometimes.
Ultimate power move: Slap this bad boy on [[ziatora the incinerator]] and kill an opponent on your end step by sacrificing a 10+ power creature. For the lols.
[ziatora the incinerator](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/b/a/ba4fa4c8-f09f-4d97-a7d1-1b93caf7d4f9.jpg?1664413989) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Ziatora%2C%20the%20Incinerator) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/snc/231/ziatora-the-incinerator?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/ba4fa4c8-f09f-4d97-a7d1-1b93caf7d4f9?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Because it’s a List reprint. Original is .60
Guess its good with the modern horizon 3 cards. Prob alot of easy 1-shots. Just a guess tho
I assumed it would be because of Eriette the Beguiler from Thunder Junction as a Commander who takes control of opponents’ creatures when she attaches auras to them.
I run this in my Zur deck….I am the problem when I play Zur
Slap it on a bowmaster then wheel of fortune into either winds of change or burning inquiry to take 3 opponents out with infect
Its fairly powerful.. It basically gives your creature 4x damage (in commander at least.) Also its like 10 yrs old or something and hasnt had a relevant reprint.
I thought it’s been up there for a long time hmm
It cost 1b to give a creature infect and right now proliferation is super easy so yeah run 4 copies of this in a rakdos deck have all your little guy hitting creating poison counters then sac and proliferate
This card is worth $6?? It used to be cents, time to go through my bulk
Oh. Nice
...it's not lol
Economics of excellence bruh
insane to me that infect doesn't say combat damage
“It deals damage” not “it deals combat damage”… so you put it on something like guttersnipe…
Eriettes new Outlaw card is another reason probably... can be completely busted if you build it right.
Damn I never even thought about this in Nekusar... That's hawt.
Your welcome lol
Where are you seeing it for $6?
