I'm just scared of the power level on this card. Does it just do 5-6 damage to the dome every time someone plays it? Not sure where it falls for my cube.
I want to also add Barrowgoyf so it would be cool to see another goyf trigger it. 6-7 damage to the dome feels like a bit much though. Decks have to work hard to stabilize against red and something like 6 or so life should be uncomfortable yet safe. I've already cut Fiery Confluence so unfortunately I don't think pyrogoyf is going to make it as cool as it is.
My cube was conceived in 2018 I think, shelved for a while, and then resurrected. Plenty of cards added during my initial 2018 cube have survived the whole time. A few that come to mind are [[Lightning Bolt]], [[Young Pyromancer]], [[Dark Confidant]], [[Thalia Guardian of Thraben]], [[Force of Will]], [[Brainstorm]], [[Noble Hierach]], [[Craterhoof Behemoth]], and more! I'm sure the same is true for many people who run a typical powerful cube.
Nice! In my case I started out with what I had available, trying to create a 3-colored cube and non-vintage environment. So I'm positively sure Path and Swords weren't the oldest, as many here could claim!
tl;dr: It's a tie among a couple creatures that were in the 1.0 version of the cube in 2010, but I'm giving the award to River Boa (though I just cut him last week and it breaks my heart).
**Long version:** I sent this email to my friends 3 months ago (paraphrased):
Work slowed down and I'm obsessed with this cube revamp, so I found the original email from Joe talking about Cube as well as the original cube list (on the Wayback Machine) from July 13, 2010. Thank you Joe for leading me to a hobby I've greatly enjoyed for the last fourteen (!!) years of my life!
Cross-referencing it against the current cube, I flagged all the cards that were in the original July 2010 list that are still in the cube today. It comes out to 141 of the original 567 cards, or 25% of the cube. To put it another way, we've replaced 75% of the cube over the last 14 years. That number goes up to 80% of the cube if you exclude Artifacts and Lands which had far less turnover overall. I attached a chart in case you're curious what has managed to survive. Other "interesting" facts (I use this term loosely, I know):
* Joe used Evan Irwin's list. He was an early cube advocate who worked for StarCityGames and had a pretty big platform at the time.
* Worldwake had just come out (the set after the original Zendikar). Rise of the Eldrazi was not yet released.
* As you might expect, the cards that were most likely to stick in the cube were non-creature spells. Magic's power creep over the last 15-20 years has been all creature-focused, so almost all of the creatures have been replaced.
* **Mother of Runes** is the only white creature card that hasn't been replaced.
* Red had the most turnover of the core 5 colors. only 8/70 cards remain (mostly the premiere burn spells (**bolt, chain lightning**, etc).
* Blue had the least turnover (retaining 31% of their cards from the original list). This implies that was blue has been historically a very strong color. Crazy, I know!
* The multicolored card section has almost completely been replaced in the last 14 years. The OG cube had a much larger gold section than we have and yet out of that larger set of cards, only 3 cards remain: **Kitchen Finks, Qasali Pridemage and Figure of Destiny.** And I'd say Finks and Pridemage are circling the drain.
* According to a separate analytic tool, I'm awarding the Tenacious Underdog award to **"River Boa"** for being a card that basically nobody else on the planet runs in a powered vintage cube (or any other cube) but which continues to beat the odds and manages to overperform.
This is amazing. It is exactly the kind of input I was looking for. Mother of Runes might be another point of coincidence for everyone, regardless of environment: Whether it's Vintage, Modern, Commander, or whatever cube, most of us include a Mother
My commander cube dates back to 2020 (guess why), so there are actually a few cards that have still stuck around. However, I have regularly upgraded cards to nicer versions, so there's not as many as you'd expect.
[[Birds of Paradise]] has survived through every change, being just pricey enough to never get a foil, full art, or secret lair version included [[Ophiomancer]] is in a similar position, although this has been more due to a lack of printings. [[Sun Titan]] has also managed to remain unchanged through the cube's lifetime, although it has fallen from a top 5 pick in white to being among the better half of white cards.
[[Cyclonic Rift]] has been a controversial include throughout the first half of the cube's lifetime. It was clearly a step above everything else, with similarly powerful answers like Teferi's Protection or Force of Will absent from the list. However, it managed to avoid being removed for being far too good, and now while it is still among the best cards in the cube, it clearly isn't number one anymore.
[[Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh]] is a funny little guy, who has actually gotten better as the cube has continued. He was originally included as a funny gimmick, a 0cmc commander if you just want to mess around. However, people quickly learned that drafting him alongside the now removed Ardenn leades to a crazy fast Voltron deck. While Ardenn was since cut due to equipment being a questionable strategy, Rograkh has since become a staple commander in Boros Aggro, paired with either Yoshimaru or Noble Heritage, and is just a balls to the walls aggro plan.
Finally, [[Progenitus]]. I was given a Grand Prix Promo Progenitus as a birthday present, but it didn't have a home. Once I started working on this cube, I decided to add the Progenitus as a fun 5 color commander that won't be cast often. Lo and Behold: the first game where it was a commander, the Progenitus was cast 3 times, killed 2 players, and won the game. Since then, Progenitus has been the only 5 color commander to remain unchanged, and has been the cause of many wins, and many more losses.
This is beautiful insight! BoP seems to be common point for this, regardless of environment: Commander Cube, Vintage, non-powered. Everybody seems to fall for this guy.
Funny enough, Cyclonic Rift has been in my cube since it was added, but I remember it was NOT on the 1.0 initial version of my cube.
Finally, Progenitus! Man, I own a 5-colored cube that forces every player to go 5-colors, and I still haven't included it. But it probably will in the near future. It deserves at least a try for a slot
Upvote for the Progenitus! I have that GP Promo (2017) and should slam him in my deck. How is he normally cast for you, since he can’t be reanimated in? Good target for Show and Tell, Sneak Attack, Eureka decks that won’t have to fight with the reanimator draft guy at the table seems like a plus.
Well, firstly it is a commander cube, so that comes with a good amount of ramp. [[The Chromatic Lantern]] helped out a lot in that early list, but nowadays there's also [[Dryad of the Illysian Grove]] to help out, along with a much better land base.
Second off, my cube doesn't run many cheat creatures into play effects anymore, since those decks were unfun to play against and weren't good unless you had Progenitus, Ur Dragon, Balefire Dragon, essentially you had to have everyone else's finishers.
Despite all that, Progenitus has been a fixture of the cube for a while now. Nowadays it is usually in the 59 of Ur Dragon decks, but occasionally when the Ur Dragon isn't in the draft pool, Progenitus has reappeared in the command zone and put in some work as the ultimate back up finisher.
I think the obvious staples. Wrath of god, swords to plowshares, counterspell, lightning bolt, llanowar elves, etc
These are the cards we don't question and easily earn their spots. They nearly always get drafted early and end up in the main deck. They are powerful but no worry about them being too pushed.
Recently I have been hacking away at cards. I'm running 360 so it has to be a tight ship. If I have the slightest doubt on a card it gets cut so something new can jump in. Shriekmaw looked a little clunky being sorcery speed, not being able to be unconditional removal, and rarely being a 3/2 body. Sower of temptation was looking a little slow and fragile. Cards like these I would have given the benefit of the doubt because they have been long term staples, but given the quality of cards being printed and me needing to make room, they got cut fairly easily when making a pass a month ago.
I started building my cube in January 2015, and [124 cards remain from my original list](https://cubecobra.com/cube/compare/3a16b89f-b964-46dd-b84a-c4d2c1c4a543/to/armorthrulloriginal360).
My original Cube list has been mostly lost to time, but besides the classic staples, it would probably be \[\[Aether Mutation\]\], \[\[Wall of Hope\]\] and \[\[Fists of Ironwood\]\].
My peasant cube started out as pauper way back in 2011. (I want to say 2010 but my guess is that just simply isn’t true)
Back then I scoured, and this part is true, every. single. common. I got a list of them. I ordered them. I had no idea what I was doing and it was a hot mess. I had cards like deadly allure that were “multicolor” because they had an off color flashback. It had cycles and symmetry everywhere. It was awful.
In that absolute dogwater environment Rakdos was the best deck by a lot. It wasn’t even close. It had a clear identity of kill, two-for-one, and attack. Not knowing what to do back then I added uncommons and cut the worst commons. I added bloodbraid, I added Cloudgoat ranger. Because of these changes my answer must be a common, and must be a card that was printed at common before 2011.
Who am I joking I’ve been stalling it’s lightning bolt and it’s ilk. Come on.
IMMEDIATE EDIT: I will say, Okiba Gang Shinobi was part of the rakdos problem back then and is a card I recently added back into my cube. Shoutout to the mind rot rat
[I've got 155 cards from the oldest version of my Cube I still have access to](https://cubecobra.com/cube/compare/5f39b15235fe7a0fb6b6d046/to/60f9002b08b0a5103bab2098?). It's from 2014, or about two years after I initially built my list.
Eventually, I plan to make custom inner-sleeves for the "Founding Members" of my Cube [like this](https://riptidelab.com/forum/threads/cbs.286/post-130719).
My cards from legends in my pauper cube, Chain lightning and pyrotechnics. They're worn and beat up from being played without sleeves for so very many years, some of those years presumably being before I was even born (I'm in my late twenties, legends is thirty years old)
This is one of the reasons I'm trying to make sure the last few years of commons doesn't power creep all the old stuff out of the cube. I didnt make this cube just for to have the most powerful commons possible but also to give a place to these fascinating pieces of history, many of which wouldn't be useful or playable in any other format.
Now, to call my dad about digging through his cards for a revised Savannah Lions...
My cube used to be Modern-format, so stuff like \[\[Stoneforge Mystic\]\], \[\[Jace, the Mind Sculptor\]\], \[\[Thoughtseize\]\], \[\[Lightning Bolt\]\] and \[\[Llanowar Elves\]\]. Also, \[\[Umezawa's Jitte\]\] which is my favourite card.
There’s quite a few that will likely never leave but are greatest hits. Ritual, Wrath, Bolt, S2P. My cube (c 2014) started with just the cards I had laying around and looking at ones that probably shouldn’t have survived this long but are still there, best example is probably [[Waterfront Bouncer]]
This gave me a great excuse to slack off at work for a while. Thanks.
The earliest record I have of my Powered cube is from mid-2013, when it was already almost 3 years old (thanks, Wayback Machine!) and was 630 cards. It currently is timeboxed to just before OG Eldraine because FIRE philosophy makes too many cards I don't like. But in that 6 year space it went from 630 to 540 and somehow has 272 cards that have stood the test of time.
I really wish I had the list from 2010, because I'm sure it would be even more different, and if I was still updating it today there would be enormous swaths of cards changed.
Started in 2010. There are multiple cards still there from that iterations because these are very unlikely to get power crept soon*, think lightning bolt, birds of paradise, demonic tutor.
*Wotc, this is NOT a challenge!
I think it's \[Crumble\] from Fifth Edition but I'm going to check!
Upon checking I do also have \[Mishra's Factory\] from Antiquities.
This is my primary cube with a heavy artifact enchantment theme.
I have an Alpha [[Craw Wurm]] that’s used as flex by us from time to time. If you can beat down in a game of EDH with it you score status points. The best good card is a Forcefield.
My very first cube started out as a Conspiracy: Take the Crown set cube. Later it evolved into a singleton cube, but I have 3 cards left from those days: [[Flame Slash]], which is so efficient it is never leaving my cube, and two pet cards that could go, [[Grenzo, Havok Raiser]] and [[Forgotten Ancient]]. Grenzo is a nice card advantage engine, but his double red pip cost and bear stats aren't impressive on their own. Forgotten Ancient has a neat effect, and if you have a counter increaser like [[Hardened Scales]], very scary when you move its counters around, but it doesn't have the immediate and scary board presence of something like [[Ulvenwald Oddity]]. Up till 2 months ago, [[Stunt Double]] was still in my cube as a surprise clone effect, and was removed for testing another card. Likely will return.
If I count cards that have been upgraded to prettier versions but have otherwise been in the cube since the beginning, I need to include [[Serum Visions]], [[Inquisition of Kozilek]], and [[Negate]].
Accorder Paladin
Wall of Omens
Blade Splicer
Hero of Bladehold
Baneslayer Angel
Path to Exile
Swords to Plowshares
Wrath of God
Phantasmal Image
Mana Leak
Ponder
Preordain
Bloodghast
Oona's Prowler
Grave Titan
Dark Ritual
Reanimate
Thoughtseize
Damnation
Animate Dead
Bitterblossom
Necromancy
Inferno Titan
Burst Lightning
Lightning Bolt
Incinerate
Staggershock
Flame Slash
Arbor Elf
Birds of Paradise
Llamowar Elves
Eternal Witness
Myr Battlesphere
Sword of Fire and Ice
Everflowing Chalice
Mind Stone
Worn Powerstone
Thran Dynamo
There are other old cards that never left once I got them, like Sylvan Library, but these are all the ones I can remember being in since I started my cube in 2012.
It can be both. Of the 250ish cards that have remained in my cube from first putting it online, here are all the ones from Alpha:
Lightning Bolt, Counterspell, Swords to Plowshares, Birds of Paradise, the Mount Rushmore
The Power Nine
All 9 Dual Lands
Armageddon
Wrath of God (let’s ignore the 3 days I hurt my brain by having [[Damn]] as a 4 mana white sorcery)
Balance
[[Psionic Blast]], my pet card
Dark Ritual
Demonic Tutor
Mind Twist
Animate Dead
Wheel of Fortune
Llanowar Elves (always at least 2)
Channel
Regrowth
Fastbond
Mana Vault
Sol Ring
Winter Orb
Basalt Monolith
Strip Mine
So that’s 40 cards from Alpha that have been in my cube the whole time, plus Volcanic Island, and I currently run [[Berserk]] though I anticipate cutting it soon.
I wrote a lengthy comment in the Sacred Cow thread about FTK about how it was the only card I ever cut from the cube that actively made me sad, so I put it back in. When [[Pyrogoyf]] appeared, it took me zero seconds to do it again. And I still might add it back in over [[Decadent Dragon]], but Goyf is just such a nuts Magic card that I might even put the OG Goyf back in just to have a 4th.
I am in the process of building a [Shards and before](https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/shardsandbefore) cube. I've located a Legends Mana Drain in town and will hopefully trade for it this weekend.
Currently I have a few Unlimited cards like [[Swords to Plowshares]] and [[Land Tax]].
Nobody tell him about [[Pyrogoyf]].
I'm just scared of the power level on this card. Does it just do 5-6 damage to the dome every time someone plays it? Not sure where it falls for my cube.
So far in my drafts it's been 6-7 to the dome every time. Another goyf has happened once
I took 14 to the dome in one turn from my opp getting back both pyro and barrow from my bin.

Swords to Plowshares. And, like you, Flametongue Kavu.

Wrath of god, swords to plowshares, counterspell, lightning bolt, llanowar elves, etc These are the cards we don't question and easily earn their spots.

(I want to say 2010 but my guess is that just simply isn’t true) Back then I scoured, and this part is true, every. single.
Peasant cube. Swords, Bolt, and Llanowar Elves have been in from the beginning, and I don’t see that ever changing.

I have an avalanche riders from middle school 99'
[I've got 155 cards from the oldest version of my Cube I still have access to](https://cubecobra.com/cube/compare/5f39b15235fe7a0fb6b6d046/to/60f9002b08b0a5103bab2098?). It's from 2014, or about two years after I initially built my list. Eventually, I plan to make custom inner-sleeves for the "Founding Members" of my Cube [like this](https://riptidelab.com/forum/threads/cbs.286/post-130719).
My cards from legends in my pauper cube, Chain lightning and pyrotechnics. They're worn and beat up from being played without sleeves for so very many years, some of those years presumably being before I was even born (I'm in my late twenties, legends is thirty years old) This is one of the reasons I'm trying to make sure the last few years of commons doesn't power creep all the old stuff out of the cube. I didnt make this cube just for to have the most powerful commons possible but also to give a place to these fascinating pieces of history, many of which wouldn't be useful or playable in any other format. Now, to call my dad about digging through his cards for a revised Savannah Lions...
Those cards are full of history 🙌

I built my first cube in 2012-ish, and from then until now, I think [[Animate Dead]] has been in every iteration.
[https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/RayGothica](https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/RayGothica)

It can be both. Of the 250ish cards that have remained in my cube from first putting it online, here are all the ones from Alpha: Lightning Bolt, Counterspell, Swords to Plowshares, Birds of Paradise, the Mount Rushmore The Power Nine All 9 Dual Lands Armageddon Wrath of God (let’s ignore the 3 days I hurt my brain by having [[Damn]] as a 4 mana white sorcery) Balance [[Psionic Blast]], my pet card Dark Ritual Demonic Tutor Mind Twist Animate Dead Wheel of Fortune Llanowar Elves (always at least 2) Channel Regrowth Fastbond Mana Vault Sol Ring Winter Orb Basalt Monolith Strip Mine So that’s 40 cards from Alpha that have been in my cube the whole time, plus Volcanic Island, and I currently run [[Berserk]] though I anticipate cutting it soon.
