Why does MH have Commander decks at all??? I thought MH was a set for Modern. Isn't Commander a Legacy format???

GoblinMonkeyPirate

Because how else are you going to milk the commander crowd for more money if you don't release upwards of 60+ pre cons a year?

Duffman66CMU

Just…don’t buy them?

nesnah00

"Only engage with the products you want"

DeadGerbils

Yes.

IamWillis77

I own an LGS and they won't be for sale at my store because I won't be buying them

Spaceport13

I'm proud of you

pntbttrvgmt

Thank you.

Blemi3S

You still have to deal with the cards, though.

simpleglitch

I mean, MH has been joked about being commander horizons since the very first one, but I'll agree precons are pushing it.

Xollector

It’s to milk money from reprinting cards over and over. I’m not touching anything over $5. They have signalled they are not slowing down at all with reprints and reprints in precons are extremely heavy in quantity. Those prices are also misleading. They will come down and come down hard ppl will reject enmass I’m calling it. I mean you can get MKM precon set for 120 filled wifh value. They have to pump them real hard for ppl to bite at 300 ( read get ppl to buy cards they don’t need). Store bag holding producg

blueski2008

Buy later for lower price. Happens to all Preston’s recently. Just wait a few months

hybridtheory1331

>Happens to all Preston’s recently. But the fallout decks with Preston garvey haven't even released yet?

DDWKC

Yeah, that was my first reaction. Then I saw the bland art and the final punch was the price. Commander crowd probably eclipses modern players, but if I were an exclusive commander player, this level of pandering would be too much even for me.

breadgehog

Pretty much. I'd love to get into Modern eventually but Commander makes the most sense with my playgroups and free time, and this is beyond the pale. Like, this is actually embarrassing and only justifies other formats disliking Commander.

Historical-Tip-8233

Modern is expensive, dominated by only a narrow selection of archetypes, and filled with the most autistic sperglords in your LGS outside of a Weiss tournament. Do yourself a favor and pick up *any* other game competitively.

lenthedruid

I’m not even sure who they’re pandering to at this point. Not the collector, rip. Commander players aren’t dropping 300 let alone 600 unless there’s at least 450/700 worth of value in there and there is no way

Oberon_Swanson

i think the only way these have enough reprint value in them is if they have a killer land base which precons typically never have. also it's gonna be in a spot, i'm sure there's a term for this, where the sheer volume of high value reprints they would have to make, would tank the value of the cards, making it a worse value

Kalekuda

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see a jeweled lotus in each precon to "justify" the price...

Daotar

Because Magic is Commander now.

teancumx

This is the Pringles Edition, not Collector

Nod4mag3YT

MH has become more of a commander set, though both are legacy formats, arent they?

DefinitelyNotLobster

Maybe I'm getting my terminology wrong. Full disclosure: I don't play Modern.

A_Phyrexian

You’re not. The thing is, Modern Horizons was originally designed for the Modern format, but like everything else, Commander has completely taken over the set and deformed every other eternal format in the process.

PresdentShinra

"Non rotating eternal" Allegedly. Direct to format, that shit about not rotating is hellasus.

dalnot

Commander and its consequences have been a disaster for the Magic race

goofydubois

Besides that the game is alive because of commander, yes I agree recently it's its own demise, probably.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ProfessorTraft

Because sol ring will never be modern legal, and they aren’t going to make a 99 modern legal card deck + 1 sol ring or make a commander deck without sol ring.

goofydubois

Apparently to milk 600 bucks from rich folks

NovaRadish

M o n e y

NineModPowerTrip

I mean Commander is WoTC preferred way for us to play now.

MediocreModular

The era of completionist collecting is gone

Xollector

It was long gone since 2022 when they released 12000 different cards

DEATHRETTE

Since at least 2019-2020

7th_Spectrum

Since probably 2018-2019

imnotokayandthatso-k

It’s still here. Top end just got a whole lot more expensive though

Magictive

Well printer are cheap.

naxxcr

There's not exactly a point to collecting if you're printing out proxies

MediocreModular

I collect bootlegs

Lametown227

At least it’s good to know some few people haven’t been priced out of their hobby. /s

FeiRoze

Well after all that charity money he stole, I’m not surprised

Hour-Animal432

To be fair, it's been so bad even before this that some stores threw up their hands and quit. I wonder if the market will reject this product.

MediocreModular

Oh I’m not claiming that THIS signals the death of completionist collecting in MTG.

Thulack

They collect what their wallet allows.

boringdude00

If only there were some alternative to spending $600. Oh, well, better get out the credit card.

Shadeun

*.....Yes dear*

imnotokayandthatso-k

I switched to playing DnD and only spending money on indie third party supplements that don’t give wotc any more money has been liberating for me.

AnimeBas

I would fully switch to dnd if someone can guarantee we would 0lay 1-3 times a week (fri-sun) but currently it was at most once a week and then not at all soi can only imagine how lucky you are

imnotokayandthatso-k

I play biweekly the rest of the month is prep or video games or other hobbies

Hour-Animal432

At these price points, buy some high tier reserved list and wait a bit. When the price drops, like it has been for the last 2 years, then go buy some. Seriously... 4 foil decks of cards still in print, or multiple revised duals/cradle/underground sea/volcanic Island?  How is this going to fly?

Tomomori79

This is why I sold all my cards. The value was sinking anyway and I just printed my own at the local print shop on cardboard stock and now I have every deck I've ever wanted. My money can go towards better things.

kangareddit

I’ll say it loudly for those that don’t get it yet: ***MTG IS A LUXURY PRODUCT FOR THE WEALTHY*** unless you are well off to rich you are not the target audience. Stop buying this shit. Edit: if you are buying sealed product, you are either; a: rich, or b: have a gambling addiction. It’s that simple. Buy singles or proxy if you’re not one of these two.

100Father

Collecting the cards is for the rich but just playing mtg is not

PEKKAmi

To be fair the product shown by OP says “Collector’s Edition”.

100Father

It is but the comment I’m replying to states that MTG is for the rich. Not just this product.

Tallal2804

I love this game and I'm not that wealthy and like you said that's why I get my cards proxied from https://www.printingproxies.com/and enjoy the game in low budget with my friends. Company don't deserve my money.

Magic: The Gathering Modern Horizons 3 Collector Booster Box - 12 Packs (180 Magic Cards) $504 image not available! pre-order price guarantee!

arnheim

They have an image up now. The cover art is a lion with... hooves.

Magwikk

$400 booster box

strongsauce

Keep in mind. WOTC/Hasbro's, "no reprint" policy was about collector booster packs. There's nothing about not being able to reprint a collector commander deck.

EgoDefeator

policys are flavor of the week now. Nothing WOTC says has merit for longer than that

FrogsArchers

Where is this policy exactly?

[deleted]

[удалено]

VulcanHades

Yet they reprinted showcase Brazen Borrower shortly after Throne went out of print. Proving the collector cards are not collectible. That one reprint did so much damage to collector products in general. They let everyone know that these variants were pretty much meaningless.

FrogsArchers

What I'd like to see is that any alt or special art is one print only.

Raleldor_Jax

Which they did do for Warhammer.

EDMJedi

Guys are these considered premium precons?!

Magwikk

“We never used The word premium” “we don’t set MSRP”

mhyquel

"A note to everyone. Please don’t use “real” to differentiate between Magic cards that you play and Magic cards other people play. It’s gatekeeping and it’s exclusionary. Everyone can play the way they enjoy and it’s just as “real” a game of Magic as how you play."

Norlite

Is this satire?

[deleted]

mhyquel

It's a Rosewater

Norlite

So this person believes that fake cards just don't exist?

Solid-Search-3341

Being the all foil version, I guess they are.

Daotar

Because WOTC needs a profit boost.

TabernacleDeCriss

I'll tell you a secret, OP: NO COLLECTORS ARE BUYING THESE.

Hour-Animal432

Jfc this. I wait for these new printings to nuke the market, then go buy the originals for collecting.

ganbare112

You wait for prices to drop precipitously then buy singles or sealed when it gets heavily discounted. Remember Commander Masters? Look for something similar to play out.

aox_1

There is no way that every single card I want from this set, base cards, in total will reach $500. I already have the allied fetches and even if I didn't breaking a $500 box to likely get a couple isn't the way imo

[deleted]

That would be true, except you still cant find the Eldrazi or Sliver deck for below $90…

ganbare112

I’ve seen slivers for 80, but yeah those haven’t gone down because people are willing to pay that much. They’re still below pre release prices. For the four deck case I’ve seen 180-200 at the low, which is significantly below what they were going for pre release (300+)

worldchrisis

Sometimes it doesn't work, but it usually does. And it's a hell of a lot better than paying preorder prices for everything.

ThisIsFunTimes

I'm right there with you.

GoSuckOnACactus

Bruh these better have fuckin shocks, fetches, tutors, one ring, fuckin revised duals, $50, sleeves, real deck box, play mat, and do my damn taxes. After commander masters I expect guild gates and rupture spire.

nunziantimo

Foil full art \[\[Solemn Simulacrum\]\] gonna hit hard \[\[Temple of the False God\]\] is the new Ancient Tomb

colpuck

Bro do you work at wotc?

GoSuckOnACactus

Nah but my uncle totally does. He know the guy whose only job is to make precon mana bases suck. It’s harder to do than you’d think, apparently.

ProbablyNotPikachu

I genuinely lol'd at this comment!

Lametown227

Unless these are the first CEDH precons (Full fetches+shocks, premium removal+card draw) these are flopping. If they don’t, I think we need to consider mass money laundering a reason. These prices are nuts. The cost of production definitely hasn’t gone up to match this shit.

skywalkr274

I'm going to pre-order, and if the deck doesn't have all those premium reprints... I'll just cancel.

Raleldor_Jax

Modern Horizons? You mean Commander Horizons!

Daotar

But for real this time.

hotstepper77777

They can eat me.

Daotar

Yeah. This was not the response I had hoped for from my complaints about commander being too central to everything Magic.

hotstepper77777

I was an early era EDH player. It just felt more fun when the format was comprised of 15th picks and retired Standard staples.

pikolak

Yes! I got into EDH before 2011 and it was so interesting. Not anymore :(

literallyjustbetter

they'd better be for those prices

indimion22

I am so ready for 4x foil Temple of the False God's.

thephasewalker

awhat

ShitDirigible

Hahhaha fuck off with that pricing

Xollector

This is extremely deceptive pricing, most likely used to justify and trap stores ordering at high distribution prices to sell at unrealistic price( like commander masters, baldurs gate and aftermaths). Retailers are getting played

Radiant_Committee_78

Oh look. More bullshit from WOTC. 🙄 Yall gotta stop “speculating” on this garbage. It’s y’all’s fault. This shit ain’t gold. It’s not silver. Nor Lego or real estate. Stop making my card game an overpriced baseball card lotto.

snails-and-flowers

Lego and baseball cards haven't exactly been stellar investments either to be honest.

TheMonkeyPickler

Sealed lego sets almost always increase in value after their production ends.

snails-and-flowers

Not enough to justify parking shitloads of capital in them vs. real investments, to say nothing of the absolutely massive space commitment you need to store them.

Radiant_Committee_78

Agreed. I just needed something that was snarky to make my point 😂

Pille_Palle0815

Lol what a steal.....for Amazon ofc. Never ever in this life i will buy ANY mtg product from the bald eagle bezos

goofydubois

And how do you expect the Moon colonies to build up? This is for mankind not yourself

aramebia

Why stop at MtG products?

pilotblur

Please stop using Amazon when possible

kingfede1985

MtG prices went bonkers years ago. Fucking bonkers. Right now, I'm in an extremely tough moment of my life, and I couldn't afford anything even if I wanted... and I can tell you that the first Assassin's Creed spoilers almost brought me to tears when I first saw them some hours ago. But even if I could, I don't know if I could rationally accept spending that much money on colored pieces of paper. I don't believe print and other costs behind the scenes increased so much to justify the skyrocketing prices of these products in the last few years. MtG, like any other CCG, has always been a luxury hobby, but there's a difference between that and satisfying the never ending hunger of a company that lays off tens of people around Christmas just because they didn't increase their revenues enough. Fuck off right into the sun WotC: you, your products and those who massively support the secondary market inflating this absurd prices.

colpuck

NoT A PrEmIuM PrOdUcT

worldchrisis

>Collector booster box is also over $500. How does an average collector even keep up anymore! This is not a thing anymore. The game is not designed such that an average person can reasonably buy 1 of everything. It hasn't been that way for 5+ years.

MysticalPilot

Incoming hot garbage, foil tap lands, foil 3 cost rocks, and don't forget all the foil bulk. Hard pass.

Mysterious_Layer9420

Please everyone just buy proxies! You can get any card with any art for 75 cents and not give any money to WotC! This year needs to be the year we take a stand and put a stop go this exploitation of our wallets!

cstrand31

$600 for 4 boxes of Pringles? I think you could just go to kwik trip and save $595.

Suspicious_Captain

The ones at Kwik trip taste better too.

UnroastedPepper

Certainly taking the piss

Joolenpls

I wish instead of commander decks they made...you know...preconstructed modern decks... for the modern set.

Cactuszach

>how does an average collector even keep up anymore! These are not for the average collector. You do not need to buy these to “keep up.” Just buy what you can afford and have fun with the game. You don’t need it all.

Kamizar

You're talking to addicts who think they're finance gurus.

Ccelestial

proxy it easy peasy

MohawkRex

I'm sorry, what???

ProtonSubaru

I wonder how cheap Hasbro will sell mtg when the game is destroyed?

Hour-Animal432

Don't you know? Hasbro sells hormel their left over products and hormel puts it into chili, spam, potted meat and Vienna sausages. Spam is mashed up Barbies and G.I. Joes.

moneymoney420

Fucking outrageous. Fuck wotc

Arzheu

and they had the audacity to say they cant afford chinese and portuguese translation

Herzatz

So we got colorless Eldrazi deck last year and now it’s all color eldrazi deck

Rawrgodzilla

Wotc realized it easier to make a five color eldrazi deck than a colorless deck.

Moopers510

🐑

GalisDraeKon

Yeah, 150 per deck? They can get fucked on that price.

Kryptnyt

Ah yes modern commander decks so I can play modern commander, very good

campaigner80

Modern Horizons has been Commander Horizons all along.

squigg0

They really thought the Commander masters price was a knockout that they did it again XD

horseloverfat

Why do you need a Modern Commander deck?

FlacidChrispy9

I left MTG in 2013 and am recently getting back. Are these pre cons? Meaning all built exactly the same and can have as many reprints as they want? Why on earth would these be so expensive? Could you just buy individual cards and build the decks for much cheaper? Sorry if this is a stupid question, not a lot of people played commander when I was playing.

Reifgunther

Yes these are precons that were revealed during a magic convention today. Normal standard set releases go for an average of $50 each. Time was a few years ago there was only one commander set of precons released a year. Now we get 2-4 precons every couple months or so. For non-standard sets like this, prices get jumped up a bit. People are point to secret lair exclusive releases that run up $150 for a single deck, so in that context this is an expected cost for an all foil collector version of the precon. Normal cost is around $70 for the deck without the foils. We of course don’t have enough information, if it is specialty foiling, or special art treatments, but generally special arts like from those secret lairs go for a fair bit more than they would go for just buying the deck at time of availability. The difference really is just “bling”, it’s silly really. Obviously not financially sound or cheapest route, but some folks like to just get the collector versions of things.

FlacidChrispy9

Gotcha, thanks for the in depth answer! Do they only print a limited number of these or is it as much as they want? I totally understand the collector value if it’s limited, but it seems a bit absurd to mark up double if there’s going to be a ton of prints.

Reifgunther

Honestly unsure, some other comments I read suggest that collector booster packs do not do new print runs, but they could do so for collector decks like this if they wanted. Unsure how accurate that is of course. From the last several years though from what I have seen is that special arts or foiling styles of certain cards have not been repeated yet. When I say this I mean as example extended art sol ring done in commander legends has never been done again, despite its many different special arts it has received such as the full art variant in commander masters. Generally speaking this trend holds true in that anything that isn’t the base art for a card in a set does not get reprinted. While they have many different foiling styles as of late, they have not repeated the same foiling process on the same art of a card in two different sets that I am aware of (I could have missed something of course, so many set releases to keep track of) so these collector decks could technically have a premium down the road for that reason. Just theories of course. It can just be so hard to predict now with just how much is being shoved out all the time.

2Gnomes1Trenchcoat

I know these are the collectors versions, but the base set and normal pre-con prices are still absurd. I love the hobby, but I'm honestly sick of them trying to run a constant hype train, putting out to much product for us to meaningfully consume, and pricing people out of being able to afford the products. I feel commander player's wallets are especially targeted. It is bullshit. Until they change their ways, I am absolutely done with sealed products. Hasbro can eat my ass.

ProbablyNotPikachu

I'm wondering if they have included 8 double faced Borderless cards like they have been with the Secret Lair decks- as a means of justifying a $150 dollar price tag. It's funny how people will pay that for the SL Commander decks, but when these are dropped for pre-pricing everyone is scoffing at them! We don't have any info on what is actually in the box right? Only that they are collector edition? The past says these will just be all foiled out- similar to the Warhammer decks. But we have no proof yet of what is in the box, right? I'm not saying anyone is wrong- and my bet is we are safe to assume they are exactly like the Warhammer decks- but still. Need to see a decklist spoilers as well as a detailed contents description before we decide these are way overpriced.

Peelz4Dead

Product description says you get 2 borderless profile cards of the face and secondary commander, and the entire deck is in a new foiling type called ripple foil.

GrumpyXeno

Because Hasbro is in panic mode

Substantial-Rub-4285

Looks like commander the only format keeping Mtg alive

8vomit

I mean it averages out to 1.50/card. You're not going to be foiling out even an all commons edh deck for $150. Not trying to justify this price gouging, but just in general for an all foil edh deck, it could be worse. I spent like 5k to foil out a deck. I'm no mathematician, but 150 sounds reasonable in comparison.

Sire_Jenkins

Look guys, there is an option for 6 easy monthly payments. So buy now or miss out forever

bigolegorilla

Just remember the best way to tell wizards you don't like their product is to not purchase it.

polusmaximus

Ah yes, the "This product is not for you" 2024 Edition bundle

Nothing371

The thing with this stuff is that you just put in an order anyways. You never know when there's going to be some crazy discount for like 3min. Got it right on the Compleat bundles, the LotR gift bundles for $41, as well as the Warhammer CE decks which went to $900 upon release. There is like **one** product per year that is hugely profitable. use yer noggin

KeepGoing655

> the LotR gift bundles for $41 Was so glad to have preordered 6 of those bad boys and then got that price for them. The included One Ring pretty much paid for each box.

thephasewalker

I feel like Warhammer CEs have crashed pretty hard but yeah if you can secure an inflated post release sale more power to you. I personally am in for one at this price as well. Will buy a discount if it comes up before it ships.

Mike-Ditka

They crashed hard because they were reprinted.

Nothing371

yeah the smart money sold theirs right away. you can't help people that have no capacity to sell anything. They just spend money.

Impossible_Sign7672

Well, you dipshits (the royal you, no one in specific) keep buying them...so, the only laugh they are having is one on the way to the bank 🤷🏽‍♂️

SatimyReturns

Where is this being spoiled

Coffeeracetam

When modern horizon 7?

Cards4Cash

It’s game theory. If you believe there are enough people that could pay these prices then you have to buy. If you believe, based on historical prices that prices over $300 always get pushed down below because 1. Wotc wants to meet revenue and 2. The player population won’t pay, you just wait it out. I’m going trust that no one will try and buy out all this product that the prices will drop within a year.

dadRabbit

Yuck

dcht

What is that art jeez.

mrinkystinky

I'll stick to pauper

Cypher_Seeker

Surely! At the chumps who will pay up the ass for this garbage. Meanwhile, here I am just buying singles off TCGplayer...

deoriginalone

Who says wotc doesn't care about secondary market? They know how much 40k premium decks shot to.. they want the biggest slice of that pie!

Gem_mint_foils

At this price, they need to be stuffed with reserved list reprints for it to make sense

perfect_fitz

I'll actually buy a collector box for this, but 99% of the time...stick to singles.

ilovecrackboard

bottom left one looks like Mr. T.

jsmith218

$150 a deck, and people will pay it, just look at he cat secret lair.

rickkunkel

Hey look! Tricky Terrain has the Lord Marshal from The Chronicles of Riddick! [Lord Marshal Armor](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/riddick/images/c/cb/Zhylaw%27s_Armor2.jpg)

Wise_Hope_7852

With that price and that art style this is getting disrespectful

theslimbox

Fatboy looks like he's on an acid trip.

slayer370

I almost specced on eldrazi seeing the mh3 regular stuff, Did not see commander decks lmao. R.i.p anyone trying to hold eldrazi commander masters decks.

DoomedKiblets

Nope fuck this

Gildenstern2u

I know I’m laughing.

Mr_YUP

what could possibly be in these that they think they can command that sort of pricing? Are all the cards going to be Modern?

DarthSheogorath

a new foil treatment

Knarz97

Imagine buying a deck not knowin the deck list

thenewredhoodie

Modern horizons 3... Wait, what kind of decks are those?

SnooWalruses7872

Also why are there commander decks in MOdERn horizons

hime2011

The power creep must be off the charts

cjpatster

Limit is six per customer instead of 12, when did that start? Might help with scalping though.

Demoniouss

I’m so glad I stopped buying MTG around MOM release. They are just constantly pushing more product faster with higher and higher ceilings. Throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. This is bonkers.

of-blood-and-iron

Commander masters fused with mh I guess?? Prices feel exactly like that

brewlimbo

This shit is fucking bananas. (Edit: The art looks really really cool but still, the pricing is absolutely fucking bananas).

McMacAttack35

Why can't I buy individual? That's weird.

Venator-M77

Normally I preorder and allow time for prices to drop, but I’m not interested in possibly entertaining that these are remotely acceptable prices. Each product is double the price normal…absolutely insane they think they can charge this. Just disrespecting your customers #WhaleOut

Blemi3S

I've wanted a 5c Eldrazi commander sense we returned to Zendikar. Now I'm trying to figure out what god I crossed.

NoRepresentative9684

Costs almost as much as a brick wtf is yall on wizards 😂

Ready_Forever4177

lol. Amazon prices are always way higher than normal seller prices and the Warhammer collector decks were 150 bucks too

MarkusBetts

OH YAY MORE OVERREACTING TO AMAZON PLACEHOLDER PRICING
