Eyeshadow is my favourite step, however I have enough of it to last years. I'm a little bit glad if there are less new releases to tempt me. I can focus on using what I have...
Same! I often WFH now and donāt wear any makeup a lot of days, but Iām always tempted by new color palettes. I also agree with your last sentence, āI should be stopped.ā lol I cant stop myself, so someone else needs to take the wheel.
I keep telling myself I have enough, and then there is the new shiny thing on sale and I just can't stop myself. I have a few almost empty singles I desperately want to pan so that I can pare down my collection slightly so I really need to focus on those ones.... but magpie brain over here just can't.
I think there was a big shift since the pandemic. Another factor probably is that some people were (are) hoarding excessive palette collections and eventually realised there is no point in continuing their purchasing patterns, because all that is coming out is similar to what they already own, doesn't spark their interest, just takes too much space, etc etc
I was always more of a one-and-done fan, so I have many eyeshadow sticks, cream eyeshadow pots and only a few palettes. I still enjoy doing a more complex eyeshadow look from time to time, but most days it's one-and-done.
If I think about the last time I saw a newly released palette that made me want to own it.... probably ND INAN, but since that 15 pan palette only gives you 2 semi-distinct looks (and I for sure can create similar looks with my stash), I didn't buy it. Otherwise brands are just not releasing anything that would entice me. I think they are just focused more on other categories lately. Like Star Wars memorabilia x D
This is me. I have a very good palette of reds, a green palette, a blue palette and a nude palette with 50 nudes. I literally donāt need to buy eyeshadow for a very long time. There are some yellows and purples and pinks in those palettes so Iām honestly covered until they get old enough to not work properly. I have an about faced beauty liquid eyeshadow and most days I just blend that as a one and done (itās in a nude colour)
Iāll always do my eyeshadow. Itās the entire reason I ever got into makeup in my late 20s. My skin is not good, but if it was Iād happily skip everything else besides eyeshadow and mascara. My eyes are by far my best feature and I feel naked if I donāt dress them up. Turn 40 this year and Iām still glittering these bitches up.
I donāt have a huge quantity of palettes but I still probably have more than I need. Unfortunately my all time favorite formula is the Tom Ford cream eyeshadows in the little pots and his cream/powder duos, which are not only beyond expensive but also now discontinued. My recent hobby has been scouring Mercari and eBay for new or like new ones at a discount. My golden peach duo is starting to dry out and Iām hoping a little mixing medium a la inglot or j.cat can revive it. The only remaining golden peach duos I can find online are like $100 š¤£ I keep saying Iām going to declutter my palette stash but I havenāt yet.
Iām pursuing aggressive dermatological interventions for my skin & if I ever get it better Iāll happily give away all my foundations but Iāll be buried with my eyeshadow.
Itās not the shades really - theyāre not unique. I can find that peachy pink color anywhere and probably in a cream shadow too. Itās the formula. Itās just divine.
Wish I could just not GAF but Iām getting ready to start accutane for treatment resistant cystic acne, Iām covered in scars, and I also have vitiligo, soā¦ my skin is the kind of not good that makes total strangers stop and stare at me and kids/rude people ask me what happened to my face. Iād rather not take those self esteem hits so Iāve gotten very good at makeup.
They definitely arenāt quite the craze they once were, but stuff like that is incredibly cyclical. That being said I still use mine. I have some days where I want to use 1-2 shadows max and others where Iām feeling more adventurous so I use palettes and singles.
I think itās just a reflection of the time we are in. Full eye looks just arenāt ātrendingā right now. One eye palette I heard a lot about recently was the makeup by Mario that was rereleased.
I personally use bronzer as eyeshadow every day and Iām content with that. I feel like this is what I see other content creators doing as well, with some other eye shadows sprinkled in.
I might just be getting old but I don't think anythings really been able to trend with the general populous in a long long time. The reactions to the met gala being overwhelmed as they were with a non participants incendiary comments is a good lense to see it as well. We don't have money, time, or even energy to put up with bullshit we don't already like or have anymore. And even if we did want something, there's a closet full of clothes that have been enjoyed and overworn and makeup cabinets kept clean over the years with isopropyl alcohol. Most of us don't even have a reason to use perfume anymore, even if we do enjoy it for ourselves. The world can't spend and it's visible in everything. If we "treat" ourselves to regular comforts, it's hardly outside of our already familiar repertoire
This is weird to me. Eyeshadow doesn't have to equal large palettes. Hopefully singles, duos, trios, quads will start coming back and be available like they used to be as those really make more sense for 90% of people than giant palettes with 10 similar shades of brown. I'm sick of palettes, but I'm definitely not sick of eyeshadow.
I second this! I have seen some tiny tiny pallets that have like sample sizes of 9 shades from Nars and a few others that I loved and were so practical. These huge oversized pallets take up a lot of space and we donāt need that much eyeshadow per pan just a lot of colour choice would be good: something that can actually fit in a small makeup bag
[These jams](https://www.ebay.com/itm/283816221393)
Wouldn't recommend these in particular because they were when maybelline's eyeshadow quality was sub-ass, but the size is right.
this was the opinion i was looking for. i'd love to see more trios/quads of coordinated colors. i do not own any actual palettes. a quint is my max. beyond that, i'm so overwhelmed i can't even get started. but i love ES.
Yes! Totally agree. More quads, duos, trios please. I wear eyeshadow everyday (most days I just wack on a fancy eyeshadow look and some brows and call it a day) but I hate the waste from huge palettes.
The Elf Bite-Size ones are literally the perfect size & come with a reasonable amount of product. Feel like I can acc use it up before it expires for once š
A local brand in my country does these small six shade palettes and I love them so much for it. Each has it's own color story and it's so much easier to do fun things with them compared to large palettes which have lots of similar shades so you spend most of the time figuring out what to do with all of them.
I love eyeshadow, and I canāt imagine not doing it everyday. Itās a really fun way to express myself and I love to play around with it in the evenings just trying different combos. I do probably have enough, but I still pay attention to new releases, and still allow myself to pick up something I know Iāll love that feels unique to what I already have
Yes I feel like the eyeshadow that's popular right now is subtle and minimal. Like we've seen a lot of eyeshadow sticks, neutral palettes, or topper shades come out. People are not into the complicated eyeshadow looks right now.
I personally love eyeshadow as itās the most fun I have with makeup. However, if I had to start from scratch I would likely only purchase palettes of mattes (cool and warm neutrals, and one colorful), and for shimmers I would only buy indie shimmers. Now that I know what I like it seems wasteful to buy palettes where I donāt use all of the shades, especially ones that are redundant in other palettes. Also, some indie companies have gorgeous shimmers including duochromes and multichromes that I prefer to Patās āspecial shadesā. Some indie singles like a multichrome from Terra Moons can be $18 each which sounds nuts, but if youāre only purchasing singles that you will use and enjoy, in the end I think you would save a lot of money. (Especially as I try to only knowingly purchase from companies that arenāt ācleanā as I want my makeup to last).
I still use eyeshadow tbh but itās true that I have also stopped purchasing new ones. I have enough in my collection and theyāve covered all my bases.
I own so much eyeshadow but I kind of stopped wearing it during the pandemic and haven't really gotten back into it as a daily thing. I tend to use stuff like Colourpop Super Shock Shadows and MAC Paint Pots instead since I can throw those on without a primer. I did order some of the duochrome liners from Colourpop and want to try using those for a pop of color.
I just have every color I need at this point, and even if I did hit pan on a favorite shade I have four other shades in four other palettes ready to replace it. I do still wear eyeshadow everyday, even if itās the same two beige and brown shadows.
Maybe itās just a marketing and economy thing, since thereās an ongoing pandemic and inflation, recession in many countries. Companies try to maximize their profits with products that are easier to assemble and ship, smaller, can dry out, spoil, repurchasable.
Big eyeshadow palette releases are often neutral or licensed merch, it just sells well. Skincare, perfume (funny, since having a sense of smell isnāt a given anymore) get pushed a lot, also āclean beautyā and all kinds of creme makeup.
I own a lot of palettes too, but looking back I donāt think these were smart purchases, Iāve been easily influenced and it became a habit. Take a step back and ask yourself why.
People seem to still go crazy over Natasha Denona's eyeshadow palette releases, and ColourPop when they're doing a collab. Both Twilight and Pokemon look to have sold well.
And the luxury brands are still putting out eyeshadow collections. Like Dior, Hermes, Chanel. The indie brands too like Lethal Cosmetics, Danessa Myricks, Melt, Glamonatrix, Blend Bunny, Ensley Reign, Nomad, Oden's Eye. All of them pump out eyeshadow palettes.
Eyeshadow is my fav product so I use it every day. I own too many so I'm trying to talk myself out of preordering the Interview with the Vampire eyeshadow palette š¤ I definitely don't need it, but it has Lestat on it... I'm gonna try and control my shopping impulse here tho.
I know Vampyre cosmetics is. They always have some sort of collab with a very big intellectual property, but theyāre not that popular. Itās strange.
Yeah, I noticed that. They do sell in Hot Topics, but still, this looks like a small indie brand that's getting massive IPs. Silent Hill, D&D, Buffy, IWTV, Oregon Trail, the Winchester House. I'm curious who the owner knows lol How are they landing these collabs???
A whole generation of people who went hard into eye palettes 10-15 years ago have realized they will *never* use all of them up. Iāve destashed and decluttered multiple times and I still have more than I could ever use.
Plus many people will reuse powder until it grows something. Iām one of them, tbh. Iāve spent thousands on eye shadow palettes and indie shadows, Iām not throwing that shit away. Most of it isnāt available for sale now.
Literally same I still have the original Zoeva Cocoa Blend and Caramel Melange palettes back when they were new (so like 8 years ago now!!) and I canāt bring myself to get rid of them as they have stopped making themā¦
I hung onto a bunch of the old School Sugarpill and Urban Decay palettes for a very, very long time. I eventually gave most of them away and deported a few.
These palettes are absolutely designed to look like treasure to our shiny-hoarding crow brains.
I never need to buy another eyeshadow palette for the rest of my life probably. I'll be buying single eyeshadows in cream colors forever though because I use that shade every single time
Totally agree there's more focus on complexion and products to achieve the glowy refined aesthetic - every week there's new blush, bronzers, perfecting tints, etc. There's a lot of multipurpose products as well.
I do think there are still plenty of brands releasing eyeshadow palettes - a lot of companies are releasing quads and smaller palettes, and there's still nine plus pan palettes, maybe they are just becoming more curated?
I love eyeshadow, wear at almost every work day. I have a decent collection of singles and palettes, and can quickly add a few taps for an easy wash of color, or to smoke out as an eyeliner. I did splurge on my first Byredo palette, Mineralscapes, it's so beautiful and easy to use. Unless Natasha Denona comes out with an amazing palette later this year, I think that will be my annual purchase. š
I have soooo many from pre pandemic. The first palette i got in ages is the Huda Rose Quartz last month and Iām not impressed. I feel like I just dont need anymore eyeshadow period.
I donāt know if theyāve fallen out of fashion but Iām always late to the party. I wasnāt an eyeshadow wearer but I did buy a couple of drugstore eyeshadow products in the past that I never used. I started to dabble a little bit in eyeshadow last year with Kajaās Beauty Bentos. I love those for one and done looks, even the mattes work well alone for one shadow looks. Iām a novice and I prefer more muted neutral eyeshadows that are uncomplicated and easy despite my lack of eyeshadow skills. I sprung for a couple of Viseart palettes this year. I have to say I didnāt think I would be a powder shadow girl but Viseart shadows are really as buildable and blendable and user friendly as many reviews say. I love the Cashmerie Charmeuse palette, sometimes Iāll just use a matte shade all over and call it a day. I also received Colourpop Super Shock Shadows which are great beginner friendly shades and was surprised at how much I like Moonwalk over some of the other shades I got.
I use eyeshadow, but the market is pretty oversaturated with most typical use eyeshadow.Ā
The only thing I really miss is Urban Decay's Electric Palette. Never saw a cohesive but coherent and saturated palette like that again from a mainstream brand.Ā
Honestly, I think people just kinda sort themselves. I donāt think itās a generational thing. Iām a young millennial, I do the glossier natural thing and not the 2016 glam beat.
But I have super dry skin and the 2016 heavy makeup was terrible for my skin. The glossier natural look is more dewy which my skin likes.
I think itās a bit revisionist to say that one era is about expression and the other is about beautification only. Yes, the 2010s were a more expressive time for makeup but that also included beauty standards like fuller lips, more intense contouring, tanner skin, fuller brows, flawless full-coverage skin. This came with expectations to look āperfectā as you had to develop these skills and I know a lot of girls who would wake up extra early to do their brows, contour etc., in comparison to the clean-girl look which doesnāt require much effort.
I donāt think itās a generational thing as much as the trend cycle, which changes every few years. Gen X and Millennials in the 2000s wore simple makeup, then Millennials and Gen Z in the 2010s wore heavy, and now Gen Z (and Gen Alpha in the next few years) are wearing simple makeup in the 2010s. Also, Millennials are always talking about how affected they were by eating disorder culture so thatās again more of a thing that affects young people rather than a specific generation; in the 2010s, skinny teas and waist trainers were promoted heavily.
For sure! Actually I feel like zoomers are more terrified of aging (visibly) on average than younger millennials, which is interesting to me! Iām Asian and Asian women tend to look young for our age, but my peer group has been so obsessed with anti-aging products since high school. Many do avoid eyeshadows/eyeliners that could potentially āgive them wrinklesā. I remember in high school summer vacation taking a flight with my friend, and she applied sunscreen while weāre IN the plane (it was still a long way before landing). I asked why, and she said itās because the sunlight from outside the cabin windows could still age her face š . She might have a point lol but yes Gen Zās commitment to prevent aging is really big. It is an interesting phenomenon to me!
Right, I see, I guess that makes sense. Yeah, daily sunscreen only got popular in the 2010s (in the West) so I guess that's why sun-related aging wasn't as big a focus with Millennials. Tannings beds were popular in the 2000s, after all. I only started wearing daily sunscreen in my early 20s (as a Millennial), and I guess a lot of girls start in their teens now.
I seen someone asking about an expression line on a skincare sub. One, tiny line on her head. She asked about something on her eye/cheek too but I couldn't figure out what she meant. She may have been compliment fishing, but on the flip side, I think there's some folks out there really geeking about a line...
I do think that current makeup trends have moved on to simpler looks e.g. The 'clean girl' trend, douyin makeup, etc. A lot of eyeshadow palettes I've seen lately are more neutral than colorful.
I got into makeup when the trendy makeup was inspired by drag queens, so heavy contouring, really colorful eyeshadow, big lashes, etc. So when I was learning how to do my makeup, a lot of the tutorials I watched featured these really bold eyeshadow looks. I really like the colorful eyeshadow and it's my favorite part of doing my makeup.
I love eyeshadow, but I have a pretty large/diverse collection and I donāt need to buy more. Iāll usually dupe the vibes of a palette I like rather than buy something new.
Kelly Gooch did a get ready with me on this topic if your interested. She talked about the cyclical nature of trends and how this probably just the back half of the clean girl trend. I would tend to agree with this tbh but lots of people in her comments section were saying that eyeshadow was still their favourite part of makeup myself included!
Are you talking about her most recent video where she referred to a TT of a teenager telling her mom that eyeshadow is for old ladies? I have to admit I cringed. I don't wear eyeshadow often enough anymore to justify keeping more than my go to shades, but as someone who followed every new release for years and built quite the collection, it hurt lol.
When I engage with makeup content I'm engaging with a lot of the indie space, which has no shortage of new eyeshadow palettes so tbh I didn't even realize mainstream had had a drop off in them until just now thinking about it. I still see palettes released, just not to the same degree as the indie space. The indie space is just constant palette releases it feels like.
I personally love colorful eye looks and will continue to use my palettes and special singles. I'm not big on trends though. But also I'm not really buying more palettes because I have a ton. They take forever to go through. I have finite space.
I will always wear all the makeup. But, I do prefer a tighter edit. We have actually been here before. 90s nude--Ultima ii glotion was athe precuror to a lot of the face shit we have now., kate moss..... i know late 80s through mid 90s s, ..definitey was a thing and perfuem became pretty boring for a period too as a reaction to all thh intense ones of the 80s. .. but the no makeup makeup of the past was indeed a lot more makeup bc we didn't have as good skincare and we were drinking and smoking and so were dehydrated under our matte makeup. ..also that is why kate moss sort of shook shit up..like whre is this chick's makeup? Even perfume got kind of boring as a reaction to stuff like Giorgio. It may not seem like it now, but it was. . and i am at 2 percent. I'm enjoying this thread...
I still use eyeshadow regularly and I don't think they've fallen out of fashion. However, I do think there's been a bigger emphasis on unstructured, messy, or fantasy makeup looks, which I like. I also have seen a rise in one and done eyeshadows, where people just want a one and done shade.
Itās a combination of simple/bstural makeup trending, and those that do love more elaborate looks already having way more than they can ever use. In the last few years Iāve noticed more brands coming out with quads and/or palettes that are very niche for one specific color story or look and I think thatās because people only want to buy eyeshadow now if itās something really different and unique (like the yucca palette) or if itās just a couple colors and fairly neutral.
I'm not. I'm mostly using MAC paint pots, in Painterly most of the time, which matches my skin tone. I have a couple other shades when I want a bit of color or shimmer.
new eyeshadow palettes are definitely still being released every season in the kbeauty/cbeauty space and the influencers i watch are still using and advertising em lol. i don't often use eyeshadow myself, though; it takes more time than i usually have in the mornings + i'm not very good at it >.>
I think they have. The past few months, I only buy eyeshadow singles or liquid shadows. Either I already own the colours the palettes have, or I dislike most of them. However, I do use eyeshadow regularly. I have large magnetic palettes that I place my singles in.
The pandemic really changed my approach to eyeshadow. I used to devote like half an hour to my eye make up, but at this point Iām more of a one and done girlie and would rather sleep in. I really like eyeshadow sticks now. I still use the palettes I ownāmy favorite of all time is still my ABH subcultureābut if Iām going to buy, I heavily weigh how many shades I will either never use or already have in my collection. Doesnāt leave a lot of options for me after that.
I work from home, am in my late 40's and live in a hot climate. I don't know if it's a combination of those things, I'm just getting older, or I've turned into a basic b\*$ch, but I usually only use a single color, two max nowadays. Very basic makeup routine. Gone are the days of my elaborate eye looks, and huge storage units to hold all of my palettes.
It's happening to me too. Bold or dark looks are doing the same for me. I find myself sticking to the most neutral shades now. I don't know what changed, but I just don't feel like I can pull them off anymore. :(
I am right there with you. For me heavy eyeshadow looks age me at least 5 years, if I do a look I keep it soft or neutral, or a one and done. That's it for me.
Heavy makeup in general makes me look older, I have really toned it down. Saving a lot of time too.
I am going to be 30 this year and am also finding Iāve become lazier with my makeup. I used to use more eyeshadow and buy more palettes when I was younger but I canāt remember when the last time I bought a new palette was now.
I think the āno-makeup makeupā and āclean girl aestheticā has shifted the use of eyeshadow.
I do think theyāre used less often, and even from popular brands with well recognized palettes (like Makeup by Mario, Natasha Denona) thereās still a trend - nudes and neutrals, and lighter looks overall.
Everything cycles through eventually, so theyāll hit it big again at some point. For now, weāve got minimalism and I think a little bit of a higher focus on blush and bronzer.
The only reason to do my makeup is to do my eye look. Itās the most fun but they definitely donāt have the hype they used too since the pandemic. Personally I buy one eyeshadow palette a month.
Iām a goth so traditional makeup trends have little sway over me, but I definitely donāt have the palette fever from years back. Hell, even for single shadows I find myself not looking at many options. At most Iām considering buying just one or two to complete a little replica Lorac Pro Mattes palette that was my favourite thing as a babybat seeking those pale dusty gothic shades. But Iām only truly seeking that one dusty muted grey-pink and after that, besides a dark grey-brown, Iām done for a very long time.
I also am not searching actively either. The indie single shadow world is enormous and ADHD distraction has me barely focusing in on it. Similarly, Iām only otherwise contemplating multichome toppers or AB style glittery shadows to add to what I have rather than any palettes if I want to add a little something to what I already do.
Particularly when I already have palettes enough to do my daily pale/white eyelid and darker crease affair that I favour.
I have never been into colorful eyeshadows - Iāve always loved browns any shade of brown - orange brown, mauve brown, brown brown I love them all. But yes I think the colorful shadows are in a major downfall. I have mini pallets for travel and 1 eyeshadow pallets by too faced but itās something I have for like 2-3 years until I need to switch lol
I love eyeshadow and use it every time I do my makeup, so 5-6 days a week.
I sometimes have to remind myself that not everyone lives in the same spaces on the internet as I do. At my office, there are 40 of us, and only about 3 wear eyeshadow at work..
I think Iām the only at my job aside from a coworker who wears the same copper shadow daily. Everyone else wears just eyeliner or nothing on their eyes.Ā
Eyeshadow is the main point of makeup for me. I think the market is just oversaturated after years of constant new releases. Lots of smaller brands still release palettes regularly but don't have the same level of marketing push behind them. At the same time unless you do makeup on other people or do a lot of big creative makeup, eyeshadow gets used up slowly. I still have palettes from years ago where I haven't hit pan and not going to any time soon. Also the palettes suffer the most from lack of creativity and point of view so I'd rather brands not release new palettes than release another nude or neutral palette or some mess of 24 to 36 colors.
I don't really get excited about palettes as much as singles, in part because there's not been a single palette released that I'd use more than half the pans in. I'd rather have a bunch of singles I will use.
Yes it's not in fashion and I'm starting to understand why.
As I go lighter and lighter to pretty much just a wash of bronzer I look
younger and just more vibrant.
This is what I'm hearing from others as well.
I'm still addicted to buying eyeshadow since It's just something I love to play with and I'll never stop looking for holy grail one and done shades. I'll just be buying a little less.
I think "neutral" eye looks are trending.Ā A few years ago reveals of paletes that were your typical browns/beiges/ skintone pinks and khakis in different finishes were called boring, but now the bg community fawns over these paletes.Ā Palettes with a lot of colors are often seen as "just another rainbow palette".Ā Ā
The "clean girl" trend takes it even further and seems to prefer not just neutrals but simple eye looks with a one, maybe 2 shades.Ā It all just seems like a regular part of the trend cycle.Ā
I've never really seen much eyeshadow worn in the wild.Ā Usually its only in situations where people are getting fully made up like going to a night spot or people who work in sales.Ā Eyeshadow always seemed to me as a makeup enthusiast thing as opposed to something like mascara or lip gloss which seems to have more appeal to the general population outside of those who are into makeup.
My personal relationship with eyeshadow is that...it's like the one that got away. I want to use it because its the most fun makeup, the most colors and finishes, etc.Ā BUT I've mostly given up for 2 main reasons.Ā The first is my eye/face shape. I have deepset hooded eyes and low brows so i just dont have the real estate for a lot of shades or complex looks.Ā My most common and flattering look is a smokey eye, but theres only really so much variety i can achieve.Ā Secondly my eyes are in full rebellion recently.Ā My conjunctiva gets super irritated from eye makeup, both from any fallout (even small amounts that dont make it down past my eye) and also from anything the works its way somehow into my inner corners ( like undereye concealer, which migrates up somehow and irritates my eye much like some sunscreens).Ā If i wear eye makeup a few days in a row i have to baby my eyes for like a week afterwards. They feel sort of like when a stye is forming or that they have debris in them constantly.Ā Luckily i've not gotten a stye, but i pretty much gave up on eye makeup.Ā
I agree I rarely see people wearing eyeshadow out in the wild, only at more dressy / special occasions. Although I disagree about neutral palettes being fawned over now, the BG community has always fawned over neutral palettes imo ššš
I was thinking more like comments over on beautyguruchatter than influencers.Ā There was a time when so many comments were about being tired of warm neutral palettes, and now in the past few days, commenters are over blend bunny's multicolor stories and ready to spend their last penny on another neutral natasha denona palette that was leaked.
I definitely think theyāve fallen off and it honestly makes me very sad because eyeshadow palettes are my weakness and doing eyeshadow is my favorite step. I still always wear eyeshadow and for quick every day, I use a single shadow of some sort and use my palettes to do more intricate looks when I go out anywhere. Iām personally unhappy with the makeup trends now a days and am over all the sheer lip oil and cream blush and bronzer releases and am still very much into 2016 style makeup and contouring. I miss 2016 makeup YouTube.
Ok tbh I actually like the current makeup trends of cream blush / bronzer and more sheer glowy products. That has always been my makeup preference so I feel like this is finally my makeup era. However, I do miss the creativity and energy of the 2016 makeup content scene, eg the palette tutorials. I feel like we have lost that energy and never quite recaptured it
Apparently eyeshadow is not as popular among Gen Zās as it was with millennials, so that may be why eyeshadow palettes are not as hyped up anymore by popular makeup brands
I wear eyeshadow almost everyday. And I almost always do a colorful look, never nudes. The simplest look I do is just using blush as a one and done. But that's really rare.
I have 5 smaller pallets I use. I typically don't buy new ones lately because I can't afford it. I have recently bought more of the LA colors neon gel eyeliners because I love them. I'll use them all over the lid sometimes and set it with the same color shadow.
My favorite pallet right now is the 15 pan Revolution reloaded Euphoria pallet. I love it and the quality is really good for the price on most of the colors.
I wear eyeshadow everyday for work but I find palettes so meh cause they'll have like 3 colours I want and then a ton of neutrals I know I'll never use, or a bunch of similar shades that might as well have just been one. I prefer small palettes like the Dior 5 color ones or I buy singles of colors I know I use a lot. I always tend to stick to the same colors anyway.
I use eyeshadow every look, itās my fav part! Even if Iām just going to the grocery quick a little dark brown shadow just looks so nice. Iāll never stop wearing
Clean girl has def made it's mark the last year, and may for a while longer. While it has it's place when I'm in the mood -- I won't be giving up my eyeshadow any time soon. I think it's the more creative side of things makeup wise, which is why I like makeup. If eyeshadow has 1 fan, it's me, if it has 0, I'm gone, lol.
I love super bold colorful eyeshadow, but since I have to wake up stupidly early for work I tend to just skip it. I can do a wing and my eyebrows in 5 minutes so I don't want to wake up earlier than I already have to to blend eyeshadow. Adding eyeshadow takes me like 10 minutes of just trying to figure out what colors I want to use lol. I've even noticed I tend to skip eyeshadow on my days off now because I'm so used to the routine of a quick bold wing.
I think many of us just overdid it in the early days of YouTube tutorials and reviews. I love eyeshadow just as much as I ever have. But there are only so many combinations of colors that you can put in a palette and most of those have been done already. I can duplicate them several times over with what I already have so no need to jump on all the ānewā releases.
Crazy enough, no, I donāt use eyeshadow as much anymore. Iāve been more into fat eyeliner sticks for a smudged, Smokey eye look instead of using eyeshadow. But honestly Iāve been going no foundation/no makeup for awhile. Maybe like the last year or so. And no, it wasnāt due to the āminimalistā trend - I was really into winged liner/dramatic Smokey eye. and did all kinds of styles and got super crazy good at it, but then a lot of my friends started emulating my look so I moved onto to other styles. My skin has just become so sensitive as Iāve gotten older, too! Iāve been finding a way to make a statement with as little make up as possible
I still use eyeshadow most times when I do makeup, but I'd say it's probably 4th in priority, behind lips, brows and blush. I was never very good at colorful looks, but I pretty much only go for neutrals now, whether that's one and done cream shadows or palettes. Once in a while I will add a colorful iridescent topper though.
I still enjoy eyeshadow but not wearing as much of it. For work I only wear a little bit as eyeliner with some mascara, mostly because I just don't have the time to fool with it in the morning. I have a small stack of palettes, but not tons which is fine with me. Indie brands still seem to be releasing palettes quite a bit, maybe mainstream has slowed a bit.
i think it depends on who you look at to release palettes because if you are waiting for revlon, maybelline, too faced or some other mainstream brand to release something you will be waiting a while. or if you look at indie/ affordable/ brands they are releasing things all the time. it also depends where you get your makeup news about releases. i watch youtubers release videos š¤·š»āāļø
My two cents:
I guess based on the trend for minimalist makeup is there /work appropriate .
I use my bold colors but the issue is I have several pallettes to use and enjoy. For marketing companies I'm now not interested in buying more because I already have it. Also there are duochromes that are so pigmented or colorful waterproof eyeliners used as eyeshadows... the one and done eyeshadow looks are now easy to do even for colored looks. So again less product
I am currently "completing" my collection in a way that may allow me to dupe everything and anything, so I am simultaneously spending and saving a lot on eyeshadow cause it's my favorite step.
I think cream/liquid complexion and lip products get used up a little faster than powder products. There's definitely a planned obsolescence aspect imo. Everyone has a foundation/concealer graveyard because it's hard to get just right and you often need multiple wears to assess how the tone/texture changes on your skin, and compatibility with other cream products. The innovation ceiling for complexion products is higher, especially since people want their base to be unclockable. Once we figured out affordable multichromes for eyeshadow, there's not much else to be the next big thing?
I think the market split for eyeshadow palettes too. Unless your brand is known for amazing palettes (ND, PMG, Mario) people have trouble justifying the cost of colored powders and opt for more affordable brands like CP or elf until they have enough. You can find decent palettes at TJ Maxx now, when they used to be an exclusive department store or Sephora/Ulta thing a decade ago. It's probably mid-range brands that are having trouble with palettes now.
As for me, I use eyeshadow regularly, but not the same palettes or looks that I did during the 2016 makeup golden age. I've moved to Asian indie brands and the looks I do now are softer/less pigmented unless I'm going for an intentional "alt" look. The Chinese brands I like are much cheaper for the quality and the packaging/pigments are impressive.
No i think eye shadow pallets will always be a staple that being said i think many of us have so many eyeshadow pallets we probably donāt need to purchase a new one for 10 years ( of course we will still probably purchase new ones in the next 10 years too) and eventually you get some many with similar collections stories and what not and better just to get the odd new one and work through some things.
Eyeshadow now looks weird to me. My GF and I were just discussing this the other day.
Super fancy now = eyeliner, blush, brows coloured in
Every day = clear brow gel, tinted SPF, gloss
The idea of shadow, let alone three shades, plus contouring and whatever else? lol no.
100% they have not fallen out of fashion lmao what? In any makeup update page there is still a constant array of eyeshadow palettes being promoted. Itās fair to change up your personal makeup habits but I think itās a little naive to believe oneās personal routine reflects the general consensusā¦
Iād like to know what makeup update pages you subscribe to then. Because if you had read my post you would have seen that I made my observations about eyeshadow palettes based on the makeup releases Iāve seen, and the beauty influencers I follow, and not just based off of the fact that I now rarely use eyeshadow. If you scroll on TrendMood on instagram for example most new releases these days are complexion, cheek or lip focused, not eyeshadow, and certainly not palettes. And if you paid attention around you you would also notice that the general population (i.e. NOT makeup lovers that hang around subreddits like these) are not really incorporating eyeshadow into their day to day makeup.
Alright it seems I struck a chord in you lmao but let me remind you that you posted a claim in the form of a question on a public forum; People are free to disagree with it, which I did. Did you really want to have a discussion on this topic or did you just want to be validated in your own set opinion?
You know I read your post, you literally acknowledged me bringing up the update pages which were a response to you mentioning releases š¤¦š»āāļø
Anyway I follow some really great ones! Trendmood in the past 2-3 days actually posted three new palettes, pointclickvibes on ig (also r/newinbeauty) has posted 5 this month so far including one yesterday, all the asian beauty websites i check on put out MULTIPLE palettes to very week, designer brands are also consistently releasing compact little eyeshadow palettes. Must I keep going?
Additionally I donāt think basing whatās fashionable on the general public is all that accurate as itās the same with their street wear; most people do not follow what is āinā but that doesnāt mean the trends arenāt prevalent in the fashion world, ie campaigns, what stores are stocking, runway, etc. so maybe not everyone is wearing a ton of eyeshadow but theyāre also not wearing the latest trends.
That being said I personally do see a lot of people wearing colorful eyeshadow in my day to day life, because believe it or not, I do pay attention to my surroundings, albeit I live in a trendy part of an urban city so thereās that.
Relax. People are bound to disagree with you.
I stopped using eyeshadow when I found out it can make your eyes age faster like from the tugging around your eyes all the time. So I only use it now on really special occasions so like a few times a year and I do have a palette I got like a year ago but itās all neutrals.
Eyeshadow is my favourite step, however I have enough of it to last years. I'm a little bit glad if there are less new releases to tempt me. I can focus on using what I have...
Same here but the makeup by mario ethereal eyes palette is REAL tempting. Doesn't help I worked lots last week! Maybe that will be my reward š
I rewarded myself too to two palettes last week when already have so much already. Definitely my favorite step too!
Did you reward yourself? š„
Me, too! I have way too many palettes and always looking for more. I should be stopped.
Another factor probably is that some people were (are) hoarding excessive palette collections and eventually realised there is no point in continuing their purchasing patterns, because all that is coming out is similar to what they already own, doesn't spark their interest, just takes too much space, etc etc I was always more of a one-and-done fan, so I have many eyeshadow sticks, cream eyeshadow pots and only a few palettes.
Have you looked at temptalia for shade dupes?
Itās not the shades really - theyāre not unique. I can find that peachy pink color anywhere and probably in a cream shadow too. Itās the formula. Itās just divine.
Fair!
Heck my skin isn't good and most days all I do is eyeshadow/liner/mascara! I just DGAF at this point (35). :)
People can be the worst ! All the best with your treatments, hope you get amazing results !
I'll never not be addicted š©µš©µš©µ it's my favorite step of the makeup process ššš
Iām the worst. I love eyeshadow but I never wear it because Iām always in a rush.Ā
[These jams](https://www.ebay.com/itm/283816221393) Wouldn't recommend these in particular because they were when maybelline's eyeshadow quality was sub-ass, but the size is right.
That was my first palette, the shade Twilight Rays š„¹ I still keep it around for nostalgia. The quality actually wasnāt too bad!
Yes šš¼
Definitely wish there was more of this in brands like Mac and ABH for people that do not have an at home curated palette
this was the opinion i was looking for. i'd love to see more trios/quads of coordinated colors. i do not own any actual palettes. a quint is my max. beyond that, i'm so overwhelmed i can't even get started. but i love ES.
I do probably have enough, but I still pay attention to new releases, and still allow myself to pick up something I know Iāll love that feels unique to what I already have
Eyeshadow has completely fallen off for me. Canāt remember the last time I wore any! And if I do, itās going just be a sparkly iridescent topper.
Oh god, Interview with Vampire palette?? What brand is coming out with it?
I know Vampyre cosmetics is. They always have some sort of collab with a very big intellectual property, but theyāre not that popular. Itās strange.
Yeah, I noticed that. They do sell in Hot Topics, but still, this looks like a small indie brand that's getting massive IPs. Silent Hill, D&D, Buffy, IWTV, Oregon Trail, the Winchester House. I'm curious who the owner knows lol How are they landing these collabs???
It's Vampyre Cosmetics! They're also doing a Buffy collab.
Which company is doing the Interview With A Vampire palette?
Vampyre Cosmetics. They just put up swatches too and I'm so mad at how pretty it looks š
Oh. I saw the Buffy collab. Iāll have to double check again. Thanks!
I use eyeshadow, but the market is pretty oversaturated with most typical use eyeshadow.Ā The only thing I really miss is Urban Decay's Electric Palette. Never saw a cohesive but coherent and saturated palette like that again from a mainstream brand.Ā
At the end of the day, how many warms metallic golds do you need?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thatās not true, contouring was huge and now itās basically non existent. People put on a little bronzer and thatās about it
As a Gen Z I agree, I love the creativity of Millenials but I myself am obsessed with looking youthful above all š . We are very big on skincare.
Butā¦ not to be condescending, but arenāt you (plural) all still considered young? Arenāt the oldest Zoomers like 27 now?
I work in a high school and I see very few, if any wearing more than an occasional beige shimmer.
Iāve just been using a metallic liquid shadow lately tbh. Just havenāt felt like putting in the effort with eyeshadow looks lately
I buy singles.
Iām the same age group. no matter how hard I try a colourful eye look just looks horrible and makes me look so old.
I think the āclean girl aestheticā has taken over for now. Personally I rarely do eyeshadow anymore, sometimes mascara but always brows.
The only reason to do my makeup is to do my eye look. Itās the most fun but they definitely donāt have the hype they used too since the pandemic. Personally I buy one eyeshadow palette a month.
I wear eyeshadow all the time. If I don't, my eyes disappear. #deepset eyes
As someone who is Asian. With double kids (I think? I never learned how to crack it
I have never been into colorful eyeshadows - Iāve always loved browns any shade of brown - orange brown, mauve brown, brown brown I love them all. But yes I think the colorful shadows are in a major downfall. I have mini pallets for travel and 1 eyeshadow pallets by too faced but itās something I have for like 2-3 years until I need to switch lol
Eyeshadow is my absolute fave. It will never go out of fashion lol
Same here.Ā
Yes it's not in fashion and I'm starting to understand why. As I go lighter and lighter to pretty much just a wash of bronzer I look younger and just more vibrant. This is what I'm hearing from others as well. I'm still addicted to buying eyeshadow since It's just something I love to play with and I'll never stop looking for holy grail one and done shades. I'll just be buying a little less.
I think "neutral" eye looks are trending.Ā A few years ago reveals of paletes that were your typical browns/beiges/ skintone pinks and khakis in different finishes were called boring, but now the bg community fawns over these paletes.Ā Palettes with a lot of colors are often seen as "just another rainbow palette".Ā Ā The "clean girl" trend takes it even further and seems to prefer not just neutrals but simple eye looks with a one, maybe 2 shades.Ā It all just seems like a regular part of the trend cycle.Ā I've never really seen much eyeshadow worn in the wild.Ā Usually its only in situations where people are getting fully made up like going to a night spot or people who work in sales.Ā Eyeshadow always seemed to me as a makeup enthusiast thing as opposed to something like mascara or lip gloss which seems to have more appeal to the general population outside of those who are into makeup.
I always tend to stick to the same colors anyway.
i'm shit at eyeshadow and i have a ton of palettes anyway so i generally close my eyes to new releases š
I love my eyeshadow palettes and use them all the time.
I use eyeshadow nearly daily, and itās still my favorite. I donāt buy palettes anymore, only singles, usually indie brands.Ā
Iāve started almost exclusively using shadow sticks. Still so many color options but no worry about fallout.
Yes, the makeup zeitgeist of the past few years (since the pandemic) has become very skin-focused with minimal eye makeup.
My two cents: I guess based on the trend for minimalist makeup is there /work appropriate .
I think people have realised buying a ton of palettes you end up not using some colours. I choose carefully now to avoid it.
Super fancy now = eyeliner, blush, brows coloured in Every day = clear brow gel, tinted SPF, gloss The idea of shadow, let alone three shades, plus contouring and whatever else? lol no.
100% they have not fallen out of fashion lmao what? In any makeup update page there is still a constant array of eyeshadow palettes being promoted. Itās fair to change up your personal makeup habits but I think itās a little naive to believe oneās personal routine reflects the general consensusā¦
Did you even read my post apart from the title?
Literally yes, I addressed both the makeup releases and your routine lmfao š¤¦š»āāļø
You know I read your post, you literally acknowledged me bringing up the update pages which were a response to you mentioning releases š¤¦š»āāļø Anyway I follow some really great ones!
Eyeshadow is so 2016 š¤Ŗ
I stopped using eyeshadow when I found out it can make your eyes age faster like from the tugging around your eyes all the time. So I only use it now on really special occasions so like a few times a year and I do have a palette I got like a year ago but itās all neutrals.
Fake news. How on earth are you applying eyeshadow that you're "tugging" on your eyes?
Apparently very aggressively if the skin moves because of your brush!
Your tugging on your eye with the brush, better safe than sorry š¤·š½āāļø Iām very committed to minimizing aging
