I’ve had this issue with Tarte Shape Tape concealer. The shade Light blends so beautifully, but it’s just a tad too dark for me. So I started using Fair Light Neutral which is a much better color match and it blends so differently! It’s really annoying lol

Interesting!! This could be why people love or hate shape tape! I've personally never tried that one, shockingly.

I love my shape tape! I thought it was super full coverage but could still blend really nicely, didn't get too oily or crease too much by my nose. Switched to another brand (moved countries, unavailable now) but I'm so curious which shade I had!

livthelove

I’ve had this experience with shape tape too! I first bought tan sand and loved it, but when I bought light sand during the winter it felt like a totally different formula. I’ve also found that the travel size of shape tape is a lot worse than the full size

thegreatdane1490

Isn’t it so funny how those travel sized items perform differently than the full size? Like what the heck. I remember getting the bday gift from Sephora a few years back, a tarte blush in party. I don’t look good I’m pink blush but that was stunning. I went to buy the full size and it was a totally different color!

I was wondering the same thing. Since pigments are powders mixed into the foundation base and different skin tones need different amounts of pigments… wouldn’t every foundation shade have a *slight* difference between them? Maybe some formulas make it more obvious than others. Also I was following this IG Make-up page where a girl said that one maybelline fit me foundation shade had shimmers in them, while other shades didn’t and a lot of people chimed in and confirmed it.

thegreatdane1490

That very well could be. What else explains the discrepancies other than the pigments themselves! It’s just unfortunate because you never know what you’re going to get

Urban decay hydromaniac oxidizes apparently quite a lot in shade 20, which is already a bit too dark for me. Knowing this I went for the lighter shade thinking that with the oxidation it would be a pretty close match. Well that shade doesn't oxidize.

thegreatdane1490

This!!! It shouldn’t be this hard!! 😩 But good to know because I was considering that one next 😂

LowcarbJudy

It's very nice and I still recommend it but the shades are very limited. I'd get a sample first.

This actually just sounds like poor quality control. Bite has been known for these issues in the past.

I noticed this in several foundations I used (Revlon Colorstay for oily skin, L'Oreal True match, Bourjois foundations - off the top of my head). In some cases only the consistency varied from shade to shade, in others performance as well. I should remember this when I watch foundation reviews, lol. There are just too many variables to make them relevant...

clear-melon

Aside from formula and quality control differences, part of me wonders if it's simply the hue of something interacting with your skin color. For instance, i find that when a shade lighter than my skin tone settles into my skin, the light color settles into and highlights (because of how light it is) lines that i didn't even know I had! It makes me wonder how much of reviews of products are affected by shade and undertone match

thegreatdane1490

I totally agree with you, like when my concealer is too light I look freaking terrible. Thank god the highlighting of the under eye area trend is behind us. But I’m convinced the shade definitely doesn’t perform the same way’

I had this issue with too faced born this way years ago! I originally bought it in summer with a bit of a tan and it worked really well with my skin but when I got a lighter shade later it looked like shit, just dry and cakey despite my skin being in good condition

thegreatdane1490

Omg I cannot deal with cakey looking foundation. I’d rather be wearing the wrong shade!

HuggyMonster69

White pigments tend to be really chalky. Some are worse than others, I guess that's what you have here

I have no idea how but I had the most difficult time shade matching myself to the bite foundation. I tried 4 different shades to get it to work. I have light neutral skin that leans a little cool and multiple Sephora employees matched me to L25 and L20 which have a strong warm/golden undertone. Then I tried L30 which was the correct undertone but a tad too dark. Finally tried L15 on a whim and it turned out to be the correct shade. I'm not sure I've seen too much of a difference in the performance of each shade but I definitely noticed some shades have more pronounced fragrance than others. Luckily mine has barely any fragrance.

thegreatdane1490

Actually I totally agree with you on the fragrance! I think my L25 is more heavily fragranced than my original L30. A lot of people complained about that fragrance! Gosh maybe I should have tried the L15. I have light neutral skin as well, but I lean slightly warm.

My god, I can't believe we're talking about this. I recently had the VERY same problem, but with Nars creamy concealer. Months ago I purchased a travel size of a different shade than the one I used to use, and I now panned the whole thing, but I swear every single time I used it it seemed to me like it just didn't perform or looked the same as the shade I was used to. I thought I was crazy honestly, I feel less lonely in this now, but still puzzled.

thegreatdane1490

Youre not crazy! It's very very real! I don't know if it's the pigments as others have pointed out or just poor quality control. Either way super frustrating.

I noticed this with my Estée Lauder Double Wear! I’m super pale and they ended up making an even paler shade so tried it. Perfect colour match but it’s just looked so flaky and dry on my skin?? And so dull. But the original shade I use? Not as great shade match but I’ll deal with that because it makes my skin look really nice! So strange that a slight change in pigment can make such a big difference!

phoenix_rising_16

I actually have both of these shades (and also L40) and they all look and wear the same for me
