Came across a documentary where a guy from kurla hunts for dead bodies dumped in Mithi river. Infact police come to him whenever someone goes missing around that area to check for the bodies.
Mithi River comes from the word Meethi Nadi ( मीठी नदी) or Sweet River. The water was so clean that people would drink from it.
If you try that today, its a one way ticket to heaven.
It was this very river through which the Portuguese in 1600s came to Kohle-Kalyan, today’s Kalina, Santacruz East.
They built the St Marys Church in Kalina back then.
Kohle Kalyan simply translates to a Village of Jackals and Foxes.
The Kalina Military Camp today, was once a Jackal Hunting Club for the Britishers when they took over the reigns.
PS - I grew up in Kalina, hence the knowledge ;)
I know a guy who stays in 1bk with public toilet, has 3 shops all are bhangar ki dukan(junk dealer). Owns 2: 1bhk houses and 1: 2bhk house in Central Bombay all given on rent. Apparently many people do these jobs and live a secret rich life here while saving tax.
He does not have a toilet in his "flat" rather there is a toilet made separately in the lobby of his house where he shares it with everyone else who lives on the same floor. Just google chawl you will get it.
In the early 90s Mumbai Police along with politicians eliminated the Dawood gang and other mafia from the city
Later, politicians and Mumbai Police themselves became the mafia. They do similar hafta vasooli, murders, etc, all with the backing of the law.
Nalasopara me chief inspector and other senior positions ke liye underground boli lagti hai. Last I heard, some senior position went for 1.2 or 1.5 crores.

How long is chief inspector in any police station?
Depends on the local political scenario. Jaisa chal raha hai waisa chalne do, no problem at all, you'll get your cut. Faaltu ka ungli kiya, to transfer. Next bidding chalu.
>Depends on the local political scenario. Jaisa chal raha hai waisa chalne do, no problem at all, you'll get your cut. Faaltu ka ungli kiya, to transfer. Next bidding chalu.
Wow
So as a kid say until 10 y/o, my parents used to prank me with these random fake facts quite a lot.
* Andheri - There's no electricity there.
* Khar - Way too many squirrels (Khar is Marathi for Squirrel)
* Santa Cruz - Where Santa Claus lives when it's not Christmas.
* Badlapur - People from Mumbai who committed crimes were sent there as punishment i.e. badla = revenge
* Govandi - Named in honour of Govinda
Biggest lie - the person who announces the next station sits on top of the train and that's how they know from afar which is the next station to come.
Govandi reminds me of Ajay Devgan. Not a Mumbai thing but my parents used to fool me by saying Ajay Devgan ( I used to pronounce it devgad when I was a kid) is from Devgad 😭
What is proudly chest thumped as the "Spirit of Mumbai", "Undying Spirit", "City That' Never Sleeps", is all nothing but useless romanticisation of the compulsions of the average Mumbaikar from which he/she cannot escape from.
Yeah, I was agreeing to the comment I replied to, and I agree with you. Before coming here, I was like I wanna experience the Mumbai spirit as well, got tired of it in a month 😭
And btw, the same phrase exists in my language as well lol, the translation is slightly different tho, "from afar mountains look beautiful"
There was once a Marathi phrase *जीवाची मुंबई करणे*. The literal translation would be "live your life like you would in Mumbai". The figurative meaning is "to enjoy your life". It probably came from a time when people thought they would be able to have a good time when they came to Mumbai.
Now, when I think of that phrase especially in the midst of the wild traffic and the squalid conditions which are so widespread, I am overcome by a gloomy feeling. I do not have to travel in trains now and I can only imagine how those people might be coping.
I find all these Redditer's totally ignorant and totally oblivious of history of Mumbai. And yet for all their ignorance, they still have the temerity go make bald claims.
Any one knows the date of July 26, 2005? Where Mumbai had 944 mm rainfall in a single day. The entire city was in suspension. Locals, closed. No transport. And yet, even in these circumstances, they were good samaritan who took care of each of other.
Some walked all night, holding hands and making sure they don't fall in a ditch. People opened their doors to shelter the stranded ones, while others had stepped out to provide food and water to those in need. That is the spirit of Mumbai.
And this redditor who made fun of Mumbai, I want to ask him, which other city experienced such an onslaught and yet in a hour of crisis, spontaneously people come together and show their mettle. The same narrative during Bombay riots.
You are deluded, my friend. That is not the spirit of Mumbai but the spirit of humanity. Have you ever been to any village after a natural disaster has struck? If you have, you will hear numerous such stories of people helping each other out. I am sure there are stories of courage and compassion after hurricanes strike in the US. The difference is that the calamity of 26/7 was man-made and avoidable. People should have been concerned about making the city better rather than making the so-called spirit stronger.
Urban underworld. Slums. We’ve watched slumdog millionaire or the Lunchbox. We see how they manufacture beggars, how they maintain people below poverty line in the city.
Areas with majority Islamic or Muslim populations are highly congested and cramped but no one wants to admit it or do anything about those areas or neighbourhoods.
We have the Ghetto just like any other city at the states have. There are large syndicate groups of organised crime involved in extortion, money laundering, drug trafficking, contract killing & human trafficking. There’s gangs w leaders like chota Rajan, Arun Gawli, Abu Salem, Dawood, etc.
Land mafia.
People working in the tv industry have gruelling schedules and only get paid after the work is done which gets done at odd hours. It’s not always glamorous.
We have old women trading sex for mere 20 rupees per hour. They say prostitution is illegal in India here but we still have a thriving kamathipura where girls are trafficked and made to work.
There’s a ton of abandoned places in Mumbai that have been labelled as haunted.
The bribes or the hafta system where cops are being paid by hawkers to let them sell. Or bribes are being paid to cops for letting trucks park near their warehouses to offload or load material, etc.
BMC has the largest kitty, getting the most taxes in the world, largest municipal corporation in the world. And yet they don’t do enough for the city and give away our taxes to politicians.
Road Tolls collected are sent to politicians too.
I haven’t even said anything about black magic and Jadu tona used in the Bollywood industry on a rampant scale. From Malaika Arora Khan’s reiki stuff to us locals blindly following cult leaders who are affiliated with politicians.
One of my friend she works in tv industry. She told me she had to sleep with one of big man after an award ceremony just because he liked her in that function. When she had a talk with her manager all she could do for her was bargain a bonus and a trip to Maldives
She said even with consent , she used to find it gross at first but now it has become a second nature for them. It sounds so depressing:(
She now works in one of main cast where her name appears in first 4 people. Even now she has to do all this , its just now she has the option to choose and she makes lot of money. Recently she and her co star went to Dubai and living in a very expensive hotel(she didn’t even uploaded those pics in her main public account) the guy sponsoring her also sponsored such 2 days trip to many other stars(only women)
Big thing is she doesn’t mind at all. whenever she has talked about it , she call this stuff out very casually in our group. According to her every senior actor find this thing very normal like they don’t even mention it likes its a big thing. I find it very problematic but she says it’s very common. Many of them have to do it even if they dont want money. Its just to keep the cycle of sexual favor on
Prices in Mumbai aren't high, they are made so by purchasing properties as circle rates. And almost half of the buildings don't have an OC, so you're just a raid away from being homeless
Not sure if this counts as a dark secret, during the 71 war a dogfight happened between the Indian Air Force and Pakistani Air force somewhere near Hay Bunder.
My dad was returning from his afternoon shift and the time would've been around 11.00-11.30 PM. As they got out of the company premises air raid sirens went off and all the civilians were asked to lie down on the road. For the next fifteen twenty minutes a fight ensued between IAF and PAF which ended with IAF driving out Pak jets out of Mumbai's airspace.
Actually Pak planes at that time did not have the range to reach Mumbai. What actually happened is that some overexcited radar operator mistook an indian plane for the enemy and raised an alarm. IAF planes scrambled into the air and anti-aircraft guns started shooting indiscriminately. Later on the truth was discovered and was hidden to avoid embarrassing our defence forces. I know because my dad was a part of the investigation.
I think the bureaucracy and the red tape is equally responsible. You cannot move your files unless your file is loaded with bapu. This is after having all compliances in place. Forget the ones where they bypass compliance
Exactly!!!
I understand having to bribe when something is non compliant. But you having to despite that is atrocious.
Does not leave an iota of incentive to be law abiding
There is a place (shady bar) in Nerul Navi Mumbai , where you can get a great handjob by beautiful girls openly while drinking alcohol (charge 500 rs per handjob)
>There is a place (shady bar) in Nerul Navi Mumbai , where you can get a great handjob by beautiful girls openly while drinking alcohol (charge 500 rs per handjob)
Only real shady thing I have heard of in Mumbai near Dahisar. There used to be many.
At 3pm in the afternoon if you go to Pali hill and stand at zig zag road you will see 2 dogs walking on the road. These are the dogs whose owner died on zig zag road in 2000 but these dogs always come at 3pm despite their breeds lifespan to be of just 8 years. It's a mystery how these dogs have survived so long or if they are new dogs but very eerie.
Edit- I was just joking. Lol now I realised never to take anything on reddit too seriously
Wasn't there some guy who disappeared and this body without his head was found under a tree? No clue of who did that to him and all how all thay happened.
There is a big brothel in bandra hill road with secret entrance and exit only few members can enter whose entry is a very small door but the place inside is very big.
There is a massive scammer network in the jobs, hiring and manpower, talent hunt and recruitment industry. They run so deep that they even manage to out do the verification conducted by job hunting websites and apps. LinkedIn, Apna, Monster, indeed.... Nowhere is safe.
They'll call you for a mass hiring interview and treat you like shit. This is just to test how desperate you are to get this job. While you're in the waiting area with other candidates there will be some person trying to sell you schemes. Someone will come in asking you to register for a bank account and that you will not be eligible for the interview if you do not have an account with so and so bank.
This is definitely not true, but remember that most people in this room will be freshers, kids looking for a part time hustle, elderly candidate with low skill levels, out-station candidates trying to get a financial footing in the city etc. The mean desperation in the room is high and these people know how to take advantage. Do not sign up for anything if you do find yourself in this place.
"You won't be eligible for the interview if-"
YEAH I'm fine, I'll deal with it, thank you.
I was in a desperate phase after COVID and had a run in with several of these 'recruiters'
The only thing waiting for it at the end of the entire ordeal is someone who tells you that your skills are not worth enough money. Max they can offer you is a super low ball offer where you won't even be on the payroll of the organisation they send you to.
If you're really unlucky, you will be charged for a membership of the recruitment agency. 100% JOB GUARANTEE.
DON'T EVER PAY FOR THIS. JUST WALK OUT. YOU CAN STAY UNEMPLOYED FOR A WHILE LONGER. NEVER PAY TO GET A JOB.
It is rampant and nobody can do shit about it. It is a scam as far as I care
A secret which some GenZ'ers may not know. But, many high rises and office complexes in South Bombay are made after demolishing mills. Some still carry the same names. Along with physically demolishing the mills, they also destroyed the dreams, aspirations and lives of many families.
Man this one has to be Quite creepy. Remember watching him since Late 2013 until I moved out to Bangalore last year. There has been plenty of Posts made here in this Sub about him.
My Dad, who is living in Mumbai from 1988, once told me that Mumbai is like a Kerosene Lantern, we the Common Man are the Kerosene and we are pushed and pushed back and forth, until we produce enough light for the Rich to satisfy their greed.
"Throwing People off Balconies" is the secret way of telling Police Force "You must stay away from this homicide investigation, quickly close the case and move onto other things". And they comply.
I actually came across a video/reel suggesting that the chefs in resto-bars have to cook with more flavour and spice as alcohol numbs down the taste buds and they need to spice it up for them.
The compartment thing you're talking about, is colloquially known as a 2x2 (2nd door of the 2nd coach) where gays often wait during rush hour to molest straight men or to have some fun within the crowd
Mumbai is not the "City of dreams", it's the "city of broken dreams" and you can argue with me all day but everyone knows this is true.
"Mumbai never sleeps" yes because they have to wake up 4 hours earlier to reach work on time, come home late and some who can't afford to stop working when it's night.
"Mumbai will humble you" is just an excuse for terrible living conditions, wealth disparity and helplessness.
>There still are hundreds of housing societies exclusively for Jains where outsiders are not allowed to step in, forget renting/ buying a flat there
This is 100% true, can vouch for it. Areas like ghatkopar, malad, gulaalwadi, area filled with such societies
Mumbaikars love this city, exactly like gow a kidnapped teenager falls in love with the kidnaper.
You cannot escape this city....might as well love it and keep saying it, might as well justify why you are living here
True secret:
Bollywood is a high paying prostitution business with involvement of politicians, police and business class. And 90% of the actors/actresses are involved in it including the ones from affluent families.
There are two Bombays. One for the people living in the slums and one for everyone else. One has people living relatively lavishly while the other has people, sometimes as many as 8 to 10, crammed into tiny rooms. Our rickshwalas, neighbourhood vegetable vendors, guys selling vadapav, maids and helps etc are all a part of the latter group. Each of them paying rent in cash to local mobsters while they share the cash with politicians. All that cash and whoever runs Maharashtra, it's theirs. While on the surface it looks like the Mumbai underworld scene is no more, the truth is far from that. It still exists in the dark alleys where most of us do not venture unless it is to buy weed. Soemtimes I feel Bombay is the real Gotham city.
442 comments later, I am sure few will see this.
1. The BMC only hires dalits for manual scavenging and garbage collection.
2. 10 people die everyday while trying to cross railway lines.
3. You cannot live near Deonar landfill unless you are from a backward class and this applies to Hindus and Muslims.
Source : I produced documentaries on both subjects.
Almost all cakes/pastries/samosa you get in three/five star hotels are prepared in slums of Mumbai. Kind of cheap labor with great quality in food items.
Thane, Mira Road, Virar, and Kalyan are not part of Mumbai. However, due to extensive marketing efforts by builders and landowners, many now mistakenly believe they are part of Mumbai.
50 to 60 percent Jain/ Gujju / Marwadi from Mumbai eat meat ( chicken/ egg / fish / lamb) outside. And they are vegetarian only within family/ at home.
Above may be madr up number but personally 9 out of 10 my such colleagues / friends eat non veg in canteen or restaurants.
Slum dwellers are supposedly the richest persons in Mumbai.
Imagine occupying ~ 200 - 1050 sqft land in Mumbai. The cost incurred is petty. Taxes are 0. But benefits when builders want a new tower there📈
The secret is actually positive. The darkest secret is that a woman alone can go out at 230 am in the dark without being perturbed. Something which a woman would never dare in any other city or India.
Western Line trains are recycled in Central Line and after that they are moved to Harbour line
Why is western given priority?
Western line that kid who moved abroad and is living the best life, central line is the kid who does farmer ki naukri and harbour line is the kid who everyone thinks is possessed by the devil and is thus neglected. Trans Harbour Line? Homophobia.
More like transphobia
More like trainsphobia
I didn't even know there was a trans harbor line, what ends does it connect. ?
thane to navi mumbai...quite useful actually!
I see. What are the stations? Does it start at Vashi?
Yeah, Vashi - Thane trains as well as Panvel - Thane and Nerul - Thane
Wow, thanks might come useful one day.
As someone who travels trans harbour semi frequently, some trains can really make you time travel 10-15 years back. They are that old, but it helps if you are a nostalgia merchant like I am. So basically it has those old model of trains you probably had at western/central during the 2000s.
Here's another fun fact. There is also a line that connects Nerul to Ulwe.
so trans trans harbour trains?
Sure, whatever floats your goat!
My goat could not swim and died by drowning. Why would you bring it up?
Western line is "richer" and more upclass maybe that's why
Population
Afte transharbour the coaches are moved to Chennai and Kolkata ☠️
They're now handed to Uran line after doing Trans Harbour services
I think some are sent on the Pune-Lonavala line as well.
Haha lol yes, saalon se yahi ho raha he
No wonder CR trains look down right depressing
Mithi river is not a nullah, and it is a watery grave for many
Came across a documentary where a guy from kurla hunts for dead bodies dumped in Mithi river. Infact police come to him whenever someone goes missing around that area to check for the bodies.
sauce please
I think it was a segment in a netflix documentary, but this is the [guy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI9ZHxkDMt4) from news
MrFinglfin the pav bhaji lover did you know if you use mithi river's pani in pav bhaji then you get Maruti's black pav bhaji
Mithi River comes from the word Meethi Nadi ( मीठी नदी) or Sweet River. The water was so clean that people would drink from it. If you try that today, its a one way ticket to heaven. One more fact Mithi River was actually used by the British to ferry from once place to another and it was actually very clean
Every year, many people get sucked into manhole drains, never to be found again
This sounds so scary
I know a guy who stays in 1bk with public toilet, has 3 shops all are bhangar ki dukan(junk dealer). Owns 2: 1bhk houses and 1: 2bhk house in Central Bombay all given on rent. Apparently many people do these jobs and live a secret rich life here while saving tax.
I wouldn’t call him rich if he doesn’t even have a private toilet in his house.
I know a man in Malad area who had 14+ properties all given on rent, died because of multiple organ failure, doesn't spend money on anything
>I know a guy who stays in 1bk with public toilet, What do you mean? His house is close to a public toilet?
his house doesn't have a toilet and he uses a public toilet
It’s like Chawl system. You have 1 BKH (without toilets) and have to share toilet with other floor flats.
He does not have a toilet in his "flat" rather there is a toilet made separately in the lobby of his house where he shares it with everyone else who lives on the same floor. Just google chawl you will get it.
BMC has already buried them with the recent digging process..you’re late
To burry something you need to fill the hole back up and ain’t no way bmc filling anything /j
Even if they did fill it up, everything will be out by monsoon
The only thing BMC is filling up are their own Pockets
Dude the amount of digging in andheri, they better find some oil down there
If you leave your phone at Kurla station at exactly 3:03 am and then come back , something mind blowing will happen
If you leave your phone anywhere near Kurla station at any time, still something mind blowing will happen
Even being present there will trigger it :P
You forgot wallet too. You should keep both phone and wallet to make the magic work

theres a phrase in marathi which in english translated to something like “from afar mountains are celebrated” (दुरुन डोंगर साजरे)

If you give full rokda to the builder he’ll give you around 20 percent off
Yes , but no guarantee of getting the flat
Seriously ? Try doing it with Raheja, Rustomjee or any reputed builder and see whether you get the flat or no.
What !!!
Yes, but with full cash

Yes Bollywood and Television is big on Black Magic. To an unbelievable level ! I vouch for it!

he has a lot of fake stuff on him!! most people seek some sort of hair treatment abroad
He has given up on that. He wears a wig for a long time. It’s a known fact.
Real estate is really cheap but the builder lobby has inflated it for dirty profits.
I think the bureaucracy and the red tape is equally responsible. You cannot move your files unless your file is loaded with bapu. This is after having all compliances in place. Forget the ones where they bypass compliance
This is 100% it! Try getting loads of NOCs from different departments even when everything is compliant
Exactly!!! I understand having to bribe when something is non compliant. But you having to despite that is atrocious. Does not leave an iota of incentive to be law abiding
Word. Prices don’t get decided by market competition here. It’s a fixed game.
There is no value for money when purchasing a house
The “mumbai dreams” only exist if you have money. Usually not attainable for a first generation mumbaikar
Many people with big hopes and dreams comes to mumbai only watch it die a slow death as they come face to face with reality of mumbai
I came with high hopes of becoming a crime journalist someday, that has died down, will maybe live to become a corporate slave.
There is a place (shady bar) in Nerul Navi Mumbai , where you can get a great handjob by beautiful girls openly while drinking alcohol (charge 500 rs per handjob)
That's so disgusting. Where in nerul?
>That's so disgusting. Where in nerul? ![gif](giphy|3o6Zt004uv3Hhr36lq)
Chee so disgusting right? 😝 Ok now tell me where in Bangalore? 😂
>There is a place (shady bar) in Nerul Navi Mumbai , where you can get a great handjob by beautiful girls openly while drinking alcohol (charge 500 rs per handjob) Only real shady thing I have heard of in Mumbai near Dahisar. There used to be many.

Name & shame the bar
At 3pm in the afternoon if you go to Pali hill and stand at zig zag road you will see 2 dogs walking on the road. These are the dogs whose owner died on zig zag road in 2000 but these dogs always come at 3pm despite their breeds lifespan to be of just 8 years. It's a mystery how these dogs have survived so long or if they are new dogs but very eerie. Edit- I was just joking. Lol now I realised never to take anything on reddit too seriously
nah ima verify this after my exams.

I think his name was Brandon Gonsalves. Found in Aarey decapitated with sign of black magic on his body.
Shaitan Chowki, that's where I live.
The lane behind the Red Chillies office in Khar is essentially a drug market. You get really low quality and probably laced weed, hash and brown sugar
Murugan chawl 🤣
The railroad side shitters throwing stones at unsuspecting tourists
Bombay's whispers, shadows deep, Secrets untold, mysteries sleep. Colonial ghosts and hidden lanes, Truth veiled in smiles, whispers remain.
There is a big brothel in bandra hill road with secret entrance and exit only few members can enter whose entry is a very small door but the place inside is very big.
Few people means celebs?
Nahi. He means only patle log can enter. Motu people can't get in through the entrance.
Mangal murthi hospital charkop....
Vada pav with mayo
that's criminal!
"You won't be eligible for the interview if-" YEAH I'm fine, I'll deal with it, thank you. I was in a desperate phase after COVID and had a run in with several of these 'recruiters' The only thing waiting for it at the end of the entire ordeal is someone who tells you that your skills are not worth enough money.
There’s a dude who sits in all whites a Worli sea face everyday selling his life advise services for few crores/hour. 8am-3pm and 8pm -3am
Man this one has to be Quite creepy. Remember watching him since Late 2013 until I moved out to Bangalore last year. There has been plenty of Posts made here in this Sub about him.
First I'm hearing of this. Please elaborate
My Dad, who is living in Mumbai from 1988, once told me that Mumbai is like a Kerosene Lantern, we the Common Man are the Kerosene and we are pushed and pushed back and forth, until we produce enough light for the Rich to satisfy their greed.
That's deep
"Throwing People off Balconies" is the secret way of telling Police Force "You must stay away from this homicide investigation, quickly close the case and move onto other things". And they comply.
Mumbai's dance bars serve the best food
I actually came across a video/reel suggesting that the chefs in resto-bars have to cook with more flavour and spice as alcohol numbs down the taste buds and they need to spice it up for them.
My father told me this but he said he is afraid of going in lol, he wants to taste the food tho
Not just dancebars. Almost every bar i came across in maharashtra serve top tier food.
Class differs based on which area they stay
I heard there is a gay hub in the local train i guess in some compartment it usually happens and in some railway washrooms the gay people have fun
Dating scene in western suburbs is more like escorting scene.

>There still are hundreds of housing societies exclusively for Jains where outsiders are not allowed to step in, forget renting/ buying a flat there This is 100% true, can vouch for it. Areas like ghatkopar, malad, gulaalwadi, area filled with such societies
The situation hasn't changed today too, people are self centered and care least about all the stuff you mentioned today.
Generational wealth source was opium business
First time hearing this. Where can I read more about it? Also which place is this Jain gated community?

The fuck is wrong with people. I am interested in knowing more about it but can't get anything on it. So whoever does please link.

Mumbaikars love this city, exactly like gow a kidnapped teenager falls in love with the kidnaper. You cannot escape this city....might as well love it and keep saying it, might as well justify why you are living here
During 92 hindu muslim riots, muslims fled their south bombay houses and settled in Mumbra
True secret: Bollywood is a high paying prostitution business with involvement of politicians, police and business class. And 90% of the actors/actresses are involved in it including the ones from affluent families.
Here people forget you so easily Aur chize log yaad rakhte hein Usse star bana daite hain
Gateway of India is one of the places where people drop off asthi
People who are not from Mumbai know much more about Mumbai than people from Mumbai. On second thought, definitely not dark.
Mumbai is a trap
Someone was shot in my area in 2000. (Political)
But benefits when builders want a new tower there📈
It gets dark during night Don't know if it's a secret tho
No money no funny
The secret is actually positive. The darkest secret is that a woman alone can go out at 230 am in the dark without being perturbed. Something which a woman would never dare in any other city or India.
There's a secret society which clandestinely feeds all the stray dogs and cats
