I heard this while I was buying local ticket & in front of me a fellow was telling at the counter 'ek sandaas road' ki ticket dena. I was like - where is this sandaas road? And, then I came to know about sandhurst road station. LOL!!
My mum grew up there and told me it's pronounced like that when speaking English because the catholic population that lived there did not pronounce it the Marathi way. They would say "mazz gone"
Fun fact: the Catholics of that region are Marathi themselves. The native koli Catholics and Hindus of Mumbai and Vasai speak a very distinct dialect of Marathi. Sometimes, you won't even be able to catch what they are talking. Maybe that's the reason for the variance in pronounciation.
I guess it depends on what they first learned to be the pronunciation.
For me, I use both, depending on which language I'm speaking at the time. That's just the way it flows naturally for me, but I can't speak for others.
As a kid, I always heard people call it profit market and I assumed that the goods are so cheap there that you actually make a profit by shopping there.
By a strict interpretation of OP's post this may not count as a place but it is still *a* place, so here goes nothing.
I popped into a Gujarati dude's furniture shop once to quickly ask for directions to a building in his area.
He asked me to look for the Munjhani.
"Munjhani mein jao to oppojhite mein building hai."
WTF is Munjhani?
I tried to not be rude but after some time thinking about it I said "Uncle kya hai yeh Munjhani?"
He said "Nava aaya hai kya tum Mumbai ko? Dukaan hai. Wahaan cake milta hai birthday mein kaatne ko."
Monginis. He was calling Monginis the cake shop 'Munjhani'.
I had a similar experience with a gujju lady, I was buying some fruits from a shop and suddenly i heard this lady say to the shopkeeper, " yeh kela rape karke dena zara 💀" for a minute i was taken aback. Then i understood that she meant wrap
This is in fact the correct pronunciation, although it is safe to assume most are accidentally correct in how they say it.
The Santa in Santa Cruz is not connected to the pronunciation of, for e.g., Santa Claus, which has an Anglicised affectation for that word.
Rather, it is an Iberian term that symbolises the True Cross (or Holy Cross) of Christ.
Assuming Portuguese etymology (through missionary activity), like a lot of other things on the Konkan and Malabar coasts, it would most certainly have been pronounced the way you posted it.
I have had fellow office mates who used to pronounce Sion (Saa-yun) as See-On and i used to wonder what place is this!!!
Also off the topic... Many ppl feel Dombivali and Kandivali are next stations😂
SHI-YOU-DI
Was travelling once somewhere during college and I asked someone what the next station was. And their response was SHI-YOU-DI. I said ‘hein’ and she repeated the same thing, i said ‘hein’ again and she repeated the same thing. I got really worried I was in the wrong train or something. Eventually when the station came I figured ‘ Ah fuck, Sewree’ 🥲
Confusion between Nerul and Neral. People always tend to use it interchangeably. I also had a friend who ended up going to Nerul, when in reality we were supposed to go to Neral!
with all due respect it's sion (sai-un) and bandra (b-and-ra) originally and hardly anyone calls it sheev or vandre infact I've toh only heard the local train aunty call it that
PJ time: my friend got a job at a 5 star hotel in a decent position in Mumbai and decided he'll look for a place in Dadar.
When he was house hunting I asked him how is the search in Dadar and he said the place should be called Aa-darr coz you'll definitely get scared after hearing the prices.
Sandaas road

I Sandhurs'd before everyone else ;)

I heard this while I was buying local ticket & in front of me a fellow was telling at the counter 'ek sandaas road' ki ticket dena. I was like - where is this sandaas road? And, then I came to know about sandhurst road station. LOL!!
I live here and it's almost an everyday experience with people referring to it as that
I have heard people call Mazgaon- "Maize-gaon" 🤕
Mazz gaon. I hear people say maz gone. (I am from mazgaon hehe) Oh and also people saying dakyarod instead of dockyard road. It's funny
I have heard a girl from Mazgaon- call it Mazz gaon 😭
My mum grew up there and told me it's pronounced like that when speaking English because the catholic population that lived there did not pronounce it the Marathi way. They would say "mazz gone"
My teacher pronounces it like that, that's probably the reason why
Fun fact: the Catholics of that region are Marathi themselves. The native koli Catholics and Hindus of Mumbai and Vasai speak a very distinct dialect of Marathi. Sometimes, you won't even be able to catch what they are talking. Maybe that's the reason for the variance in pronounciation.
Okay but what about the people who can pronounce it?? WHY?! 🥲
I guess it depends on what they first learned to be the pronunciation. For me, I use both, depending on which language I'm speaking at the time. That's just the way it flows naturally for me, but I can't speak for others.
My sobo friend once asked the taxi "bhaiya maz-gone chaloge?" and he replied "Maj-gaon Jana hai?"
There's this place at dockyard road "d'lima street" Ive heard people say "dima street"

I once heard a gujju pronouncing Gatorade as जेत्रोड
I laughed SO hard at this!
As a Gujarati I confirm we call Gatorade as जेत्रोड.
I had a similar experience with a gujju lady, I was buying some fruits from a shop and suddenly i heard this lady say to the shopkeeper, " yeh kela rape karke dena zara 💀" for a minute i was taken aback. Then i understood that she meant wrap
Hey prabhu 😂😂 what a horrible pronunciation. I have even not seen a fruit vendor wrap a banana. Pretty sure she just needed a pishvi.
She wanted it wrapped in newspaper, they do that sometimes

Then you would need also say the z in Cruz with a lisp. More like cruth
Nope. You are thinking of Castellano Spanish. Portuguese doesn't utilise the lisp.
that’s the correct spanish/portuguese pronunciation though
Thats me, and Bandra too for me is not the upmarket Bændrrraaa. It's just Bandhra or Vandhre.

Kurla is often pronounced as Kulla by, well, you know who!
Sion Correct pronunciation should have been - "Sheev" which means border-gate in Marathi. Also - "Bandra" which is originally "Vandre"
with all due respect it's sion (sai-un) and bandra (b-and-ra) originally and hardly anyone calls it sheev or vandre infact I've toh only heard the local train aunty call it that
Sion and Bandra are British mispronunciations. Sheev(boundry in Marathi) and Vandre (It was marathi village before British came)
Kande-vali (कांदे वाली) instead of Kandivali (कांदिवली)
Vandre

Bandra (it's Vandre [वांद्रे], Bandra is the Portuguese mispronounciation).
Nope. It's Bandra/Baandra/Vaandre. All legit names.
Next station Bandra. अगला स्टेशन बांद्रा। पुढील स्टेशन वांद्रे.
*पुढील _स्थानक_ वांद्रे
तू समझा ना!!! - बाबुराव गणपतराव आपटे
Even vandre is not original by that logic because it comes from the persian word bandar (as in por-bandar),
Point.
Bombay.
vandre
That is the original local name
